Scrapped one yesterday; so bad it was driving me to melt down. Couldn't even get my own eye colour right. This vid will realy help with the next attempt.
Perfect video. You did everything right with this video, you talked through the steps, you kept the video a great length and just the right amount of information. Huge thanks!!
Wow! Thank you so much! Attempted my first portraits this week and you have shown me precisely where I went wrong & how I can improve. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your talent and your knowledge.
I've only done one portrait (beginner), so it was very informative for me to see you mix the three different skin tones and your process of layering. Great video and lovely portrait. Thanks for the tips! I love your channel.
omg! THANK YOU for the reference to the "ugly face"! i wont say how much paper of the ugly people ive tossed in the bin only to go back to boring landscapes and color squiggles on paper. I had a great sketch, composition, and inspiration only to be failed by a wtf moment. i thought i should just go on but not knowing that there were brighter moments ahead i just gave up. Thanks again.
well, I loved this tutorial and have watched it many times. I attempted her and think that she looks like her but maybe a few years older. LOL. Thank you for sharing this tutorial. This was my first attempt at a watercolor portrait and yours seem the easiest to follow so thank you! I have learned so much!
Absolutely staggering artistic talent. Portraits is the highest level of art to me, and sadly I can't do it. I do paint from vintage / antique Christmas cards, using the grid method of drawing out, so scale up larger, sometimes poster size. Also draw and paint same way on recreating old American comic covers from the 40s to 70s eras. My neighbour has a 2 year old son, and she keeps asking if I could paint his portrait. I said no, as it's just too complex and way off my usual theme. I did paint one of my guitar heroes Johnny Ramone (of the RAMONES punk band), from a black and white photo, and added colour to my painting. Thing is, you can only see a small part of Johnny's face!! I use Designers Gouache on 300gsm paper. I could use I suppose, a photo altered into a sketch, in a photo editing programme I have, so to pick out black outline edges of a real face on a photo.
Thanks for the great tips. I would love to see an even more in depth portrait painting as well as fabrics of any type. Would love to see something where it feels like movement and how a background would help to give that feeling.
Hello Sarah, I enjoy finding the gems that Artists have in their UA-cam library. I hope you continue to get views from this wonderful video. I guess that when you use “Best” or “top 5/10” watercolor techniques can be so advantageous for those searching for content on UA-cam! I love the mix up enough paint tip! I use larger sized papers for many of my landscapes, I like to use white porcelain plates to mix up plenty of paint, especially for my sky’s! I love that watercolor paints will revive by adding water once you get the color right! Thank you for sharing your wonderful tips with your viewers! Please take care and be safe over there.
You captured the likeness beautifully, when I paint portraits in the shadow areas in paint the local skin colour first then when dry i place the shadow on top.
Hi! This video was very helpful. I would love to see more examples of painting clothing. All the folds and colour changes.... that would be great. Thank you!
i have just stumbled across your channel and learned so much from this video! Thank you for sharing your valuable process with patience and clarity, and your voice is a pleasure to listen to...so soothing and gentle. Clicking subscribe : )
Sarah you have done a beautiful job on this! I actually had the same reference and tried doing a coloured pencil version.. Lordy, that did not go well 😂 excellent work 💜
Thank you for the great video, it was very clear and helpful. One thing that I struggle with in painting young children in watercolors is getting them to look their age. Mine always tend to look a few years older, and I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. If you have my tips for that I’d really appreciate seeing them.
Not simping but I could listen to your voice all day I have a question...can you use flat brushes make a perfect portrait cause thats the only brushes I got
Really great video and loved all the tips, especially the last one where you learn more from finishing your project than from giving up! So obvious but often hard when faced with a difficult phase of any painting. Thank you.
W O W !!!!!!! Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with us . You are an inspiration to be sure... I am now going to attempt a portrait .. Love and Peace, Catherine
Thank you so much! I have big pressure to do a portrait of two grandkids and want to use watercolors. I'm very new to it. You were a huge help. Thank you so much! Subscribed and liked!
Great video, just about to embark on my adventure with watercolour, have only ever done pencil drawings. I know it will be trial and error. So will be interesting to see want my first picture looks like.
It's Awesome.. And Very useful tips.. thanks a lot.. I liked, done comment and subscribed.. Keep doing.! Keep motivating us.. Thank you.. Love from INDIA..
Hi! I usually use Scotch magic tape around the outside of the paper to create a nice white border and then secure it with painters tape (frog tape) to a board. Hope this helps 😊
You're really good. I love your technique. I didn't comment before but I'm subscribed for qute a long time now. Watercolor is my main interest, so this is really instructive. I never did a portret before.
Hello Sarah, thank you so much for this video. Could you tell me how you transfer the outline to the watercolor paper? You have a nice light outline so I don't think you're using transfer paper, but maybe you are. Or maybe you're using a light box? I also use the grid method and was glad that you mentioned that you use it too (I feel guilty for not drawing freehand sometimes, haha).
Hi Carla! I use the grid method on cheap printer paper first to make sure the general proportions are right and then use the reverse transfer method to transfer the outline onto my watercolour paper. I add in any extra details (like in the eyes and so on) freehand. Then I use a kneadable eraser to lighten the outline so its just visible and doesn't show up on the finished painting. Hope this helps 😊
Scrapped one yesterday; so bad it was driving me to melt down. Couldn't even get my own eye colour right. This vid will realy help with the next attempt.
Hi David! Panic not, it happens to every artist! Sometimes best to have a break and try again another day- that's what I do! Hope the video helps. 😊
Yes, I’m painting my grand son with a blue shirt!
Great Angie! Have fun! 😊💕
Perfect video. You did everything right with this video, you talked through the steps, you kept the video a great length and just the right amount of information. Huge thanks!!

So good! I’m attempting to paint my first portrait and hope I can translate what you taught me to my project. Thank you so much!
Thank you! Good luck with your portrait 😊
Terrific tutorial well explained.
What a lovely young lady you painted! I am loving how it turned out!
Stunning, the portrait is only complete because you have the eyes nailed.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you! 😊
This was so so helpful I’ve been scrolling for hours trying to find videos that explained skin tones, yours was by far the best . Thank you
Thank you, I'm so glad you found it helpful! 😊

Thank you! So many of my paintings go through this phase and it's often tempting to bin them- but sometimes they turn out ok so don't give up! 😊

What a terrific painting. Just what I needed since I've never done a portrait before. Thanks!

Can I share with you my portrait artwork! Which really helpful to me for my guidance!!
I really like this portrait but I'm not sure if a darker background might have been a nicer contrast to the skin than the white of the paper.
Thank you Mathilda! I like the idea of a darker background.. maybe next time! Take care 😊
