I've figured it out! This is a "Retro" Retro Handheld. It's a throwback to the days when handhelds couldn't handle SNES. What a wonderful trip down memory lane!
Sure, it's his opinion of course and some things I'd weigh probably as overly harsh and other things, there's no question, are spot on correct. Though if my faceplate came bent, it wouldn't be a good start to the day or couple weeks either. Stuff like the dpad is easily fixed with a tape mod but things like the usbc-headphone only outputting mono for me or small battery, those are concerning issues. Software wise, either having to go in and select an older SNES 2005 retroarch core for lower CPU settings or clock the CPU higher to 1.34Ghz with a small battery and not great heat dissipation, that's also a problem. Most likely that can be solved with custom firmware but why spend the time tinkering when for a few dollars more it's possible to get a solid device, ready to go out of the box. Time is also money and even doing the tape mod fix or replacing the battery isn't necessarily worth the effort. That said, I don't think it's complete garbage but it's definitely an alpha build. Which is odd because Miyoo could've gone with the SigmaStar chipset in previous devices. That option would have custom firmware out of the gate and they'd at least have an okay device for certain fans. Having to wait for others to fix software is never a good business model.
Miyoo needs to look at where they position themselfes in a grueling Handheld Market. The A30 doesn't have a solid customer base. It's the Niche of the Niche.
@@wizzel22 Yeah, we are in middle of device fatigue with Anbernic, Miyoo and Aya Neo all potentially selling a similar product. Which doesn't include all the similar products from the past. Kind of wish one of them would've taken the SF2000 SNES controller form factor instead to offer an additional option to the RG353. The danger of these meh products even if they're passable with custom firmware, is getting lost in the shuffle especially if the overall narrative is negative. If someone has $50-$60 USD for a budget unless they really care about size, getting a slightly larger device is night and day. Though I, and maybe others, have a standing in line at theme park or public transit use case for a micro handheld which I'm not worried if it gets lost or stolen.
I think what made the original myoo so popular was their size and then onion os. Also if it wasn't miyoo behind this device it wouldn't have gotten the smoke it did
I still take a30 while I already take rg28xx first, but i agree with you, rg28xx with the chipset, dpad, battery life, stereo earphone jack port, knulli cfw and ready stock is much much better🎉
Miyoo has had other good Handhelds in the past. The Pocket Go is a good Handheld they've released that instantly comes to mind. I honestly think they should release the Pocket Go with a 3:2 screen and a more powerful Chipset.
I said it in a community post before, here it goes again: I have the suspicion Miyoo only got popular because Onion OS and some reviewers, but this company did output questionable hardware before, and it looks they still do.
Between this debacle and Anbernic beating them to market with a flip, I think Miyoo’s future is in jeopardy. They’re small and can’t afford to mess up like this twice in a row.

The RG35xx SP took my attention away Miyoo better come out with something better. The landscape of retro handhelds have changed significantly after their release of the minis.
1 - hire more staff to qa 2 - hire onion os team 3 - find better screen And then miyoo can probably still survive the competition with anbernic. Very disappointed. The device looked so good when they first revealed it.
Sounds like they rushed it out to try and stop Anbernic from grabbing their sales. It's the RGB20SX all over again. (Ironically, they didn't even have enough Miyoos to meet demand.)
I wonder if they just thought they could get more out of the CPU than they could. Probably ordered tons of inventory and had to push it out regardless of difficulty getting it running well.
Update to Spruce OS and everything runs wayyy better. I have also gifted at least a half dozen of these and have never had any issues with controls so it sounds like you got a bad unit. SNES, N64, and PS1 all run well on Spruce OS as well.
I only discovered your channel a few days ago, but this is the most brutal review I've seen from you. Considering it's a Miyoo device, it should've been an easy slam dunk for them.
Honestly, I avoid Miyoo products after Miyoo Mini Plus that I had for a brief moment. Relatively low production quality was apparent back when I had it: you could wobble screen with two fingers, speaker was complete junk and PWM noise was annoying (compared to other models in that price range, because they all have it). Anbernic consoles that I had after that (35xx and 353PS) just felt more well thought and better built, and seemingly had better PCB\circuit designs too. edit: but the biggest killer for me is that "1-2 hour" of battery life tbh. No matter how good console is, that is already the reason for a hard skip.
Performance issues aside, this device has the worst d-pad I've ever used. Apotris (Tetris) is literally unplayable on it due to the false diagonals dropping blocks when you move left or right. I opened it up to try and fix the d-pad to see that it's incredibly cheaply made. The entire device is held together with 4 screws from the rear case to the front case with all the extra bits just friction fit in place. The screen is completely exposed, no glass or plastic cover so it is super fragile. I broke my LCD while taking it apart and can't order a new one so I just tossed it out. Good riddance.

Hey Joey, I purchase one of these and I've not reviewed it yet, I've been too busy with other stuff. First thing I checked was the faceplate issue since I'd see others mention it and strangely mine is well stuck on. Which surprised me as I expected the worst. However mine shipped with a stock 64gb card and no Super mario games included, well no SNES at least. It did come with some Dreamcast ones that crash soon after starting play. Question, where did you get the stock rom set from as I'd like to give that a test too.
I just bought one off AliExpress for $35. I'm guessing that Miyoo took notes from your review and made improvements, because the one I received is pretty good. It handles SNES, PS1, and arcade games well, and Dreamcast is playable too, which surprised me. So hopefully, we can get an update from you down the line.
It's really starting to sound like the Miyoo Mini & Miyoo Mini Plus were a bit of a fluke. They're carried by OnionOS, so that's fine and good, but it's a shame Miyoo couldn't play ball w/ Anbernic. I'm not a fan of this form factor. I'm apprehensive about the MM Flip; the loud buttons on the RG35XX SP are a bit concerning unfortunately.

Yes, it sucks that you pretty much _have_ to install different firmware to make it do what you want, but at least now I don't feel like I flushed away $50. UPDATE: Turns out you can set your default core in Spruce by just hitting the X button on any game select menu. Why they even _have_ any older, crappier cores set as default is anyone's guess, but oh well. At least now _Chrono Trigger_ doesn't have horribly fuzzed-out music. Saturn doesn't appear to recognize any games at all, but I'll let that slide since the Saturn kind of blew anyway.
A “death by software” ranking is fair. The idea behind the device and the physical execution of it is great! But the display, performance, operating system and battery life are pillars that make a great handheld and this device fails to even be a good device IMO
Great review! I've been considering the Miyoo Mini Plus, but I think I would prefer the horizontal form factor. I'm not interested in SNES so that's not a problem for me. I'm looking to play Atari games, specifically 400/800 and 7800 games which usually don't require much processing power. Heck, I don't even know if the controller arrangement would work for me. But at least the price is right. I've got plenty of options for playing these games at home, but I'm still waiting for a decent handheld portable so I can play these games on the go. I guess I'm still waiting. Thank you so much for this well considered and reasonably detailed review!
One more bug I experience and could be reproduced every time is when you exit a game with start+select instead of the miyoo menu. It bugs the software and nothing works. You have to rebuild the SD card. I got 2 and they'll be staying in the drawer until software gets better. I hope it does cause I like the feel in the hands but the state of release in inexcusable.
I don't really think I would like either new micro devices. For me the rg35xxh is plenty small and I like the firmware better than the miyoo mini plus, even with onion on it.
It's also nice to remember that at the 50$ price range you can buy the trimui smart pro that has a great stock os and is capable of playing psp. I think that we might see these things more often since odin 2 and the retroid pocket 4 pro already dominate this market, so what's left is some weird ass bullshit like that.
i think the face plate designs for this device are terrible so if it comes off so easy i would advise people to pull it off and just get some paint pens and do your own design :)
There seems to be a modified version of the stock firmware that fixes many of the performance issues, adds apps and overlays. It's called BTN (Better Than Nothing) for the Miyoo A30
I hope they release a version with a larger screen and in Miyoo mini plus colors soon. For me, 2.8' is too small a screen. There is rg35xx H and I really like it, but I don’t understand why there is a second stick. This console does not normally play games that require it.

Some notes: - The snes emulation speed can be fixed by changing some settings. Focusing on that will probably pull attention away from deeper issues. - The OSes are usually this bad... it's just more noticeable here because there's no community OS yet. - Bad software is unfortunately the status quo in this market, and devices aren't expected to really function until they've been reflashed with custom firmware. It's messed up and shameful and makes volunteers do the work on behalf of unethical corporations, but it's standard practice and probably will be until/unless someone multilingual with local connections goes to heroic lengths to fix it. Put some pressure on the manufacturers to release source code as required by the open-source licenses... and to cooperate with the community.
If this had either the same internals as the mini V4 (so the higher res screen and onionOS) it would have been a home run. As it is it’s trash. If this had the H700 in it instead it would have also been decent
My Miyoo Mini Plus is very finicky when it comes to retro achievements. If the battery is below 50%, or if I'm too far from my router, it will see the router and sometimes connect but won't log into retro achievements. Try connecting to power and being in the same room as your router, and see if you can get it to work. That will let you start narrowing down the core issues.
Wow a turkey and a lemon all in one! I'm pretty much done with the cheap end of these emulation handhelds. There's always at least one thing wrong with the hardware and these companies are really lazy with the software they provide. At this point I wouldn't buy one unless I knew for a fact someone had done a custom firmware for it, even then I'd probably save the cash for something better.
Wow that's disappointing the same company that brought us the Miyoo mini & plus did this with the A30 I had such high hopes for it really Miyoo it doesn't play Super Nintendo what's this 2019 with the Pocket Go they really dropped the ball big time glad I went with the RG28XX this time around sure it's small but at least it's functional.
In my opinion, Miyoo has been overrated because of the succes of Miyoo Mini / Miyoo Mini Plus. But in my experience, I find that although it's a great handheld and has amazing OS (especially Onion OS) ...it had some quality issues that I found to be very annoying. I stopped using my Miyoo mini plus, because of annoying creaking sound made by the plastic on the back of the device (the battery cover) and also the Blue/Green tinted screen, which has bad color accuracy. Even the cheaper and more powerful R36S has a better screen (altough it has battery discharge issues and unconfortable buttons) ... but yeah... most handhelds are made with imperfections and I'm starting to believe they do it on purpose to make you want to buy the next "upgraded" version that also has a different hidden flaw...
AS far as I know super nes emulation needs some shader / effect / filter to be turned off to make it work properly. For some reason the unit comes with those enabled and it messes up the gameplay
So sounds like it's a software issue which is at least fixable after release. Still no excuse for a well respected emulation handheld company though. If I were them, I would have shipped units extra early to OnionOS developers and paid them some money to have it be ready in time for the device's release.
After the miyoo mini and mini+ hype train I was thinking this would be awesome but man this thing just seems like a massive miss. Even with custom firmware I just think this thing is lame
Miyoo was overhyped from day one, only because of OnionOS - which is great! But their devices are notoriously underpowered. Every Anbernic Device is better nowadays. And yes, i owned the Mini and the Plus, sold both.
It has to be the software, people are running GBC on calculators nowadays and there are devices that literally cost 6-7$ that can play arcade and nes. With as much competition as there is nowadays, F-ing things up like that is unacceptable. OR probably Miyoo are not spending on software they wait for CFW team to fix their device 😅
Good God.. my $25 dollar FC3000 V2 works better than this and I still play the damn thing mainly for GB/GBC & GG. I was really hyped for the A30 but held off buying it on the suspicion that it might arrive half-baked. Hopefully they'll eventually push out a better hardware revision (and a better firmware too) that addresses all the mounting issues several reviewers on the internet are pointing out. I have a RP2s and its great for PSP but I never take it to public places for fear of losing it, having it stolen or accidentally breaking it, I had initially hoped the A30 would be a cheaper alternative for playing PS1, N64 & GBA on the go but it seems those hopes are dashed for now. Tis a shame, I really like the physical design aesthetic of it. The original MM was cool but it cramped my hands too often when playing it, this would've been great had it been done right, maybe they'll fix it next year lmao.

I always use my own roms and BIOS, so didn't come from the device.

Tbh, I feel like Miyoo is just a one hit wonder. I LOVE my Miyoo Mini, onion OS is amazing, but any device without onion just can't compare.
I feel like you may have a defective battery. That would explain some of the sluggishness, quick heat-up of the device, and horrible battery life.
I'd think it was my device too, but spoke with others who are seeing the same issues.

5:56 you didn't show us the actual gameplay. For me if it runs 10 fps on the title screen but ran 60 fps on gameplay then it's fine.

The face plate looks so cheap and tacky that ripping it off is almost an improvement.
i had this issue with miyoo mini plus and it seems that the wifi module was defective and cause the heat and instability and power consumption

You have to rebuild the SD card. I got 2 and they'll be staying in the drawer until software gets better. I hope it does cause I like the feel in the hands but the state of release in inexcusable.
I don't really think I would like either new micro devices. For me the rg35xxh is plenty small and I like the firmware better than the miyoo mini plus, even with onion on it.
It's also nice to remember that at the 50$ price range you can buy the trimui smart pro that has a great stock os and is capable of playing psp. I think that we might see these things more often since odin 2 and the retroid pocket 4 pro already dominate this market, so what's left is some weird ass bullshit like that.
i think the face plate designs for this device are terrible so if it comes off so easy i would advise people to pull it off and just get some paint pens and do your own design :)

There seems to be a modified version of the stock firmware that fixes many of the performance issues, adds apps and overlays.

There is rg35xx H and I really like it, but I don’t understand why there is a second stick. This console does not normally play games that require it.

Some notes:
- The snes emulation speed can be fixed by changing some settings. Focusing on that will probably pull attention away from deeper issues.
- The OSes are usually this bad... it's just more noticeable here because there's no community OS yet.
- Bad software is unfortunately the status quo in this market, and devices aren't expected to really function until they've been reflashed with custom firmware. It's messed up and shameful and makes volunteers do the work on behalf of unethical corporations, but it's standard practice and probably will be until/unless someone multilingual with local connections goes to heroic lengths to fix it. Put some pressure on the manufacturers to release source code as required by the open-source licenses... and to cooperate with the community.

If this had either the same internals as the mini V4 (so the higher res screen and onionOS) it would have been a home run. As it is it’s trash. If this had the H700 in it instead it would have also been decent
Ayaneo is coming out with Advanced Pocket Micro. It's apparently looking better than this thing and better quality than miyoo.
My Miyoo Mini Plus is very finicky when it comes to retro achievements. If the battery is below 50%, or if I'm too far from my router, it will see the router and sometimes connect but won't log into retro achievements. Try connecting to power and being in the same room as your router, and see if you can get it to work. That will let you start narrowing down the core issues.
Something in the software blocking it, it's not a range issue like I experience on the Plus as well although this does have that too.

Wow a turkey and a lemon all in one! I'm pretty much done with the cheap end of these emulation handhelds. There's always at least one thing wrong with the hardware and these companies are really lazy with the software they provide. At this point I wouldn't buy one unless I knew for a fact someone had done a custom firmware for it, even then I'd probably save the cash for something better.
I got mine with spruce os and works perfectly. Small, portable, ideal for nesting to gba games
ANBERNIC has literally taken over and they are always a few steps ahead of Miyoo.
Wow that's disappointing the same company that brought us the Miyoo mini & plus did this with the A30 I had such high hopes for it really Miyoo it doesn't play Super Nintendo what's this 2019 with the Pocket Go they really dropped the ball big time glad I went with the RG28XX this time around sure it's small but at least it's functional.
Glad I avoided these new "micro" handhelds from miyoo and anbernic. They both ended up being stinkers

In my opinion, Miyoo has been overrated because of the succes of Miyoo Mini / Miyoo Mini Plus. But in my experience, I find that although it's a great handheld and has amazing OS (especially Onion OS) ...it had some quality issues that I found to be very annoying. I stopped using my Miyoo mini plus, because of annoying creaking sound made by the plastic on the back of the device (the battery cover) and also the Blue/Green tinted screen, which has bad color accuracy. Even the cheaper and more powerful R36S has a better screen (altough it has battery discharge issues and unconfortable buttons) ... but yeah... most handhelds are made with imperfections and I'm starting to believe they do it on purpose to make you want to buy the next "upgraded" version that also has a different hidden flaw...
AS far as I know super nes emulation needs some shader / effect / filter to be turned off to make it work properly. For some reason the unit comes with those enabled and it messes up the gameplay

So sounds like it's a software issue which is at least fixable after release. Still no excuse for a well respected emulation handheld company though. If I were them, I would have shipped units extra early to OnionOS developers and paid them some money to have it be ready in time for the device's release.
This form factor should have been the rg28xx.

Miyoo team just messed up with this one. MM+ is much better than this low quality plastic crap.
Miyoo was overhyped from day one, only because of OnionOS - which is great! But their devices are notoriously underpowered. Every Anbernic Device is better nowadays. And yes, i owned the Mini and the Plus, sold both.

It has to be the software, people are running GBC on calculators nowadays and there are devices that literally cost 6-7$ that can play arcade and nes. With as much competition as there is nowadays, F-ing things up like that is unacceptable. OR probably Miyoo are not spending on software they wait for CFW team to fix their device 😅

Good God.. my $25 dollar FC3000 V2 works better than this and I still play the damn thing mainly for GB/GBC & GG. I was really hyped for the A30 but held off buying it on the suspicion that it might arrive half-baked. Hopefully they'll eventually push out a better hardware revision (and a better firmware too) that addresses all the mounting issues several reviewers on the internet are pointing out.
I have a RP2s and its great for PSP but I never take it to public places for fear of losing it, having it stolen or accidentally breaking it, I had initially hoped the A30 would be a cheaper alternative for playing PS1, N64 & GBA on the go but it seems those hopes are dashed for now. Tis a shame, I really like the physical design aesthetic of it. The original MM was cool but it cramped my hands too often when playing it, this would've been great had it been done right, maybe they'll fix it next year lmao.
