Elio was just discovering his sexuality and to push him to this side of the pendulum is wrong. He could have ended up with Marzia and have a lovely family. But he is now stuck with this obsession for Oliver, lonely and sad even 20 years after that fateful summer. All the while, Oliver is happily married, has a caring family and a settled life. Elio was guided wrong, intentionally misguided by his father specially and the universe was just unkind to him. The way events unfolded were not at all productive for him.
