BUILDING A VILLAIN - God of War Ragnarok's Odin

  • The best villains should have complex personalities that demand attention from the audience when they are on screen, and their dialogues and motives should also make some sense despite how twisted or malicious they might be.
    And that’s something the character of Odin excels at, creating a believable personality that doesn’t fail to surprise us throughout the entirety of Ragnarok. And this is a trait that the best villains in all of the entertainment share, be it Vaas from Far Cry 3 or The Joker from Batman: Arkham or Dutch from Red Dead Redemption 2, just to name a few.

    I don't see what people are complaining about. This portrayal fits more with mythological portrayal of Odin as a wise old trickster-like sorcerer. People seem to just want a Zeus clone with no complexity. It's a shame. Odin was great in this game.

      Richard Siff's portrayal of Odin here, got me into speech patterns that give off charisma. When he speaks, he holds your attention, you want to believe he's a good guy, you want to trust him. Even knowing that he's the main villain, watching spoiler videos online, I still fucking doubted it while playing because he was so good at coming off as someone you wanted to like. He deserves an award for this 🤣

    I believe Odin is a "Pure Evil" villain who only PRETENDS to be complex. He wants knowledge and power for the SAKE of knowledge and power, his motivations of "stopping ragnarok" and "save Asgard" are just lies he uses to trick people into helping him. Everything was always about himself, for himself and by himself. Even if he achieved all his goals, acquired the power of the mask and stopped Ragnarok, he would just make up another excuse to keep opressing and using people to get even more power. He would never "sit down and enjoy the sun set on a grateful universe", he said himself at the end: he would never stop.

    Sad that they didn't put Thor's goats in the final fight with the wolves and Odin's horse in the final fight and him dying by Fenrir/Garm/Horodviltnir in the end, just like the original mythology where Odin's destiny is to be killed by the giant Wolf,Just like the Wolf being killed by the son of Odin Vidar the God of revenge and Tyr in Ragnarok being killed by the Wolf Garm, where they both kill each other It's a shame it didn't happen and they changed everything,I missed more Valkyries in the game and others Aesir Gods Odin's childrens and grandchildrens protecting Asgard, for example:
    Hermod,Bragi,Idunn,Forseti,Ullr,Meili and finally Vali and Vidar and Odin's brothers Vili and Vê Together with This Hodr would no longer be possible since he is a blind archer and he dies at the hands of his own brother Vali who kills him avenging Baldur's death And the return of the dead gods since in the original Norse Mythology they live and save Asgard and become the new Gods who will take care of the new worlds, especially Baldur who returns and becomes A new king of rebuilt Asgard protecting the 9 kingdoms and being the Savior/holy Messiah and protector of Asgard and Valhalla And it would be much better if Odin won the final war and adopted Atreus To become the as Loki and trained him to be the main villain in a sequel alongside the others gods. How great it would be If it were like that
    How I wanted these gods in the game,it's a shame they didn't put them... Who knows, maybe in a DLC or next game, let's hope And pray it happens... 🥺🤧 Like and Bye!

    • @cokechang
      @cokechang Рік тому +1

      @@jeremyallen5974 to me, the fact that he can one shot Thor(even a weaken one)just raises more inconsistency question than it answers, If he has that kind of raw power at disposal and had he combined with his ability to shapeshift into anyone, he could easily get close to any unsuspecting ally of kratos and one shot them. That possibility never seem to cross the minds of any of our protagonists and not even Odin himself. Through out much of the game I thought odin’s powers was maybe limited and thus couldn’t use his full skill set, but apparently that wasn’t the case.
      Writing smart and powerful villain who is believable is extremely hard to pull off cuz you always run the risk of him easily wiping out the protagonists if you make him too smart. So most of the time, it just looks like our smart and all powerful antagonist is being destroy by plot rather than any brilliant strategic move from our protagonists.

      You said that Odin one shotting Thor was inconsistent
      Although Odin is the All-Father and King of the Aesir you asked why not just kill the protagonists while being disguised as Tyr
      My friend, Odin could’ve never one-shotted or kill anyone in Sindri’s Cabin because of a very important reason he needed Atreus to finish his mask
      Tyr refused to do it so he got locked away and what good would another person who is locked in a cage or dead help with his mask… Odin disguised as Tyr he never planned to kill or lift a finger because he didn’t need to for the most part he just wanted intel….
      While the thought of killing anyone of them might’ve have crossed his mind it wouldn’t take long for everyone to suspect Tyr if he had or be aware of Odin’s presence…and you saw what happened when his cover was blown….
      If he had killed or attempted to kill Kratos the only other person besides Tyr that being Atreus wouldn’t have helped him and bam his prize treasure is most likely lost forever

Him killing Brok was only to villainism him and to more the story forward. It made no sense. If you say he wanted the mask 1 he could have easily gotten it many other ways, and he even told Loki at the end how it wasn't meant for him, and he couldn't use it. In fact odin is quite justified in the murder because of what they did to heimdall. I cant see odin as an evil guy because i never got to see any of it. With zeus, we saw many of his evil things like the genocide of a lot of innocent sparta residents. With heimdall, we saw how he tormented people around him. With odin, all i see is him being polite and quite rude to thor (which is the only time i actually felt he was a little bit terrible) and although he lies a lot, his desire to help atreus know everything felt so genuine. Because of how odin was presented by the stories, i actually do not believe everything freya and mimir says about him. If you want the gamers to hate odin, then SHOW US HIS TERRIBLE DEEDS even through flashbacks. This one shot crap style of god of war ruins its storytelling.
