    I'm 76. Lost the love of my life of 40 years in 2017. We met New Years Eve 1977. I was 32, he was 25. I treasure every year we were together. He was so much a part of me . To have had this kind of love was truly a gift from God. It IS possible !

    Gay. 76. Extremely happily in love with 60-year-old husband of 30 years!!! He works; I'm retired! He's Southern; I'm Latino. He's OCD; I like clutter! He's ginger; I'm silver! He's tall; I'm short! OPPOSITES!!! We DO attract!!! The thing that made us CLICK - he's hairy (I love that); I'm Central American Indian SMOOTH - no hair (except in strategic places!) The past 30 years together we have made so many wonderful friends and we really appreciate them all. If we went on a gay cruise, my hubby would get upset if ANYONE were to make eyes at me (I told him THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE!); but he does protect me!!! I guess, for him, I'm still cute; like I was when we met!!! LOL LOL And to answer one of the people who commented; YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE RICH TO HAVE A GREAT SENIOR LIFE; YOU JUST HAVE TO BE RICH IN LOVE AND SPIRIT!

    I still haven't found anyone, I'm 53 now. Feel sad sometimes but then life goes on. People say one day that one will come my way. It's hard to believe that. I feel really lonely and isolated in some occasions. Guess I wasted too much time not accepting myself the way I was in my younger years. Now I am paying the price. Having said that we never know...life is so full of surprises.

    • @jamesgreg5542
      @jamesgreg5542 3 роки тому +1

      I'm sorry that you feel "lonely and isolated", especially at 53! Honestly? For me when at the age of 53 I was and felt SO vital. Now at nearly 68 and having lost my Husband 2+ years ago, life is much more of a struggle. Basically because of being without the support I enjoyed and depended on for 32 years but I recently required heart surgery (that was a surprise!!) and now with a young 3 yo dog that relies on me for love and care, the house, the yard, car, bills and groceries, cooking, you name it all falling on one person it has "tested me". But you know what?? When I feel lost, down, pressed, stressed and tried I'm never really "down". The reason is I found out that I CAN do it. Even if I have to manage it alone and even after enjoying the constant love and support that I no longer have and the somewhat "ill health" I now live... I live. I go on because I want to and need to. You just DO. You CAN! You will. I still look and am still (somewhat) hopeful that one day a gorgeous soul of a man will notice me and my ability to remain pertinent but if and until that ever happens, it's gotta be ME who digs the trenches and traverses them to get to where I'm destined to be. God Bless you for moving forward but please don't ever feel you've "paid a price" for your younger years. We are who we are and working toward a better you is all it takes to wake up and see the gorgeous light of day. May it fill your heart with sunshine!

      "Someday your prince will come" is one of worst delusions we tell each other. I wonder how long a person can blindly hope for a thing before they accept reality. I looked for 15 years before I realized my energies were better directed at more fulfilling exploits. I haven't looked back.

      NO!!! If two people meet and have great chemistry the "wealth" you build together makes you richer than a billionaire. My husband and I are not RICH; but we're comfortable because we met while we were both still working. And our idea was to build together for our respective retirements. We own a house; two cars and have enough insurance to choke a horse; but all that aside, we are rich in our mutual respect for each other.

    The morning of my 50th birthday (6+ years ago now) I woke up and it was almost as if some switch was thrown. Suddenly my new mantra was 'fuck it'. I'm continuing to learn and grow as a person in every single way. I haven't found 'the one' just yet, although I thought I had in late 2019. Being single and heading toward 60 leaves me anything but sad or dejected. I'm vital, I have good health and the ability to enjoy life through friendships and keeping myself active. Twice I've received an interesting fortune cookies (laugh as you will!) that said I would marry late in life. So I guess I'm going to find out what that means....until then, I'm just going to keep moving my life forward.

    I'm 52. I moved to another state 2 years ago. I've been remodeling a home. I've decided to return to school to begin a second career. I have two dogs and two cats. I enjoy working in the yard and hope to begin some new raised vegetable beds next spring. I've been working on the landscaping since I moved here. Planning a scouting vacation to the ocean in August to look for some land. When I'm finished with school I may build a home there. Not sure if it will be a second or primary home. Hopefully I will be able to put a cheap camper on it for weekends for now.
    My point is...I'm over 50 and just happily going about life. I've lost to many people to waste my life. I'm alive and appreciate the opportunity to live! I'm in a relationship, 11 years and going strong. The relationship isn't what makes me happy, me being happy and positive is what makes the relationship work.
    Get out there guys, work hard, play hard.

    So many fortunate and lucky men who were able to find true love and compatibility with a life partner.
    All I know of romantic love is how to live without it, was never lucky or fortunate to find it or it discovering me. I’m in my mid 60s now and living alone isn’t so bad as I never learnt the language of love, that language that only lovers speak or can understand. I see them walking, holding hands, sitting close on a park bench or smiling at each other as they sit together on the grass on a warm summer evening immersed in each other. They make me smile, even if I don’t have romance in my life it’s always nice to see lovers in the world.

    Humm. My man and I are together since 1999, so that's 21 years now. I am 62, he is 53. We travel a lot, but we wouldn't be caught dead on a cruise, let alone a gay one. Are we unhappy? No, not really. We have enough friends in the town where we live. No, not in Amsterdam, Sydney or Rio. They live a few blocks away, which we really do prefer.
    Yes, it's right - you have to make contacts to keep your relationship fresh and stable. But not necessarily on a cruise or in the streets.

    I'm dissimilar to him in many ways. I'm Vietnamese, 25. And yet, I feel his advice at the end has helped me with moving on over the issue of sexual racism. Not that it isn't salient anymore or I will give up on rectifying it. But I've got to move on with my life, too, and with a mindset which is positive and constructive for me.
    So, if some guys don't like me because I'm Asian, it's not about me, and it's their huge loss. :)

    • @befuddled2010
      @befuddled2010 5 років тому +2

      It is so sad that many members of the gay community judge others mostly by what they look like. My husband of 30 years, also Vietnamese, experienced the same at your age. In that respect is seems the gay community in America has learned little since the 80's. I would encourage you to continue on your chosen path. If the preconceived ideas people derail their appreciation of your worth as a person then that is their loss. Besides, you don't need folks like that in your life anyway. Best to you!!!

      As I write this, I see it's been 3 years since your post. I say to you, "Bravo! Stick to your beliefs." I'm an old white guy and when I first came out some45 years ago, I thought I was finally entering a world where people didn't sound like George Wallace. Once, I went to a Diana Ross concert with a guy and we were coming home, we were going through Chinatown a nd approaching a stop light and he said, "Whatch this." He waited for an elderly Asian person passed the car when he acted as if he was starting his car. He startled the old man and then screamed, "CHINKS!" I thought to myself, I may not be in Kansas anymore, but I might be in Mississippi in 1963. But I guess what it amounts to is that we all have our jerks. Nevertheless, I move on with personal happiness. I have lived in a Latino neighborhood for almost 23 years. My roommate is Asian-American. My closest friend is also Asian-American. Why is he my "closest" friend? Well, for one, he was at my bedisde in the hospital when I had a heart attack. He eggs me on to go to the gym even when I'm tired but he knows I need to go to the gym. He has a better education (Harvard) than me (Western Michigan), yet we both have our moments of intellectual stimulation. It's not that I don't have white friends, I do, but I have been a blessed person because my life is wrapped around a Rainbow flag. So, again, BRAVO!.

      @@williamsnyder5616 It has been 3 long years and much has changed. Thank you for taking the time to share with me your experience and encouragement. I very much appreciate that. 45 years ago - you are brave! And I’m happy to hear that you have had an amazing life worthy of such character. ;) I pray you will manage your health well and keep us young peeps in good company.
      Regarding the “sexual racism”. I have gotten a lot thicker skin now. And I think I have also come to accept, with sympathy, that we all exist upon this world like raindrops condensing around a cloud seed, meaning that deep within us exists the germ of our often conflictual existence - a selfish and dark impulse to sustain it all, at costs. And so I have come to understand that choosing a partner is a very intimate and personal act. And therefore, discrimination - the process of differentiation, selection and rejection for the benefit of the self- must prevail. In that, I am no better than the guy next to me. Well, maybe just a bit better because I wouldn’t utter certain silly ideas haha. Of course, I had wished that discrimination would be based on sounder reason and be expressed in more pleasant terms, but after all, words don’t have to hurt us if we don’t allow them, too. And developing an understanding and a thick skin is much more feasible personally and politically than imposing a world view on other people. :) So yeah, I just moved on and focused on building my life and supporting others’ lives. Because in the end, service is what matters and attracts. Why would a British ship make a vow not to sail in the Pacific Ocean, why would a Persian lavender make a point of not growing under an American sun, right? Hehe. ;)

    He's confusing two distinct issues....sexual interest and social interest... Sure gay men socialize with other gay men of different ages, but that's not the issue. It's the loss of sexual interest and absence of a partner that older gay men fear. There will always be parties for them to attend, but if they're looking for more than parties, you may be disappointed as you age.

      This is true. And if you are not already in a relationship going into your 50s the fear and trepidation is stronger. Too many people have the attitude that if you are over 40 or 50 then you are past it. Sadly, you also have to meet certain physical and look standards to be considered. There are a lot of lonely gay men out there in this predicament.

    Great stories from you, Richard! You are very fortunate to have had a life partner, like most of my gay friends seem to have had! My life has been a series of short relationships (tacky little affairs, my friends called them!). I am quite fortunate to be on very good terms with my former partner of 1968-1969, and we are the closest of friends almost 50 years later, though he lives in Los Angeles and I live in the Southeast. Regarding the fear of being invisible, when he says, “If they are into young men, they aren’t into me, if they are into black men, they aren’t into me.”, that almost seems to be indicating that the only interest is based on sexual attraction. But there are plenty of people who are interested in people of all ages, all races, just because they see the value of true friends. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation or attraction. I’d be honored to be this man’s friend.

    The problem is that we're talking about going on gay cruises, international travel, etc. Not everyone can afford to do these things. That is sort of what I was feeling when readiing Alan Down's book a few years ago : these gay couples he wrote of were of an above average affluent lifestyle. It isn't very easy to be attractive when one is living paycheck to paycheck through no fault of one's own. Thus, it may not be age so much as socio-economic status which causes the "invisibility".

    It seems in retrospect that the 20’s are figuring out what you want in your life and the 30’s are getting a job and beginning to settle down, and from there on the age doesn’t really matter as much. I had a little dread at age 50. I was freshly out of a horrible relationship and had given up, and I went on one more date with a man that was 5 years younger then I, and it has been 22 years. I had a house and he had military benefits so we both contributed and we have a big bunch of friends that are for the most part, straight. It’s all good in my view. I have no idea where the time has gone, but there is little I am afraid of at this point in life.
