- You Need a Website and Email List, you can't rely on social media algorithms or policies can change. So you need to build a website or blog and start email marketing and growing an email list to keep access to your audience. Don't rely on social media. Rely on yourself.
Email Marketing and Website Building are not something most social media influences and content creators want to do, because social media is free and comes with traffic. But you never know when you will lose access to your audience and that is why you need your own website and email list to keep that access to the audience you built long term.

True, the email servers are also owned by the giants. But you’re one degree closer to the consumer. To get a text number/physical address or anything that avoids the tech giants all together, you have to get to the email inbox first and build the relationships so they are your people and not the property of the giants.

Unbelievable. I recently left social media as a creator and this is exactly the video I needed.
Creators think they absolutely need to be on social media in order to grow but the downsides of social media exceed the benefits.
Direct contact with your audience is definitely the way forward. Because the audience that cares about you, will find you no matter what.

I swear I have been screaming this from the mountain top to so many people for so long. This is such sage advice. We have to own these relationships. And you cannot get mad at an algorithm of a social network you aren’t paying for.

This is the best advice I have heard this year by far. I know the younger generation will just ignore it, because they don't want to make the extra effort and for them it is enough to live in social media world. When I had asked a young person to read a blog, she just looked at me and said: "I'm not 70 years old." I guess older people will listen to this advice and will benefit from it. Please keep us older folks in mind when you create these videos. I think it is time that older people start a comeback on the internet. Thanks for creating this video. If you know a way how to convince younger people to buy a domain name, please let me know.

This is facts. Pretending like you have full control with the relationship concerning customers on social media can be a huge issue.
I figured that out over a year ago. Social media is in control of your audience and they can effect your audience more than people realize. People told me I was crazy for maintaining a website with social media.
it's crazy to me that people don't want their own website. I've had my own website since 1998. Just going through a major overhaul right now (switched hosting service... renewal costs at these places are insane! cheaper to switch every 3 years. haha.) I feel like redesigning my website is something I do about once a year and it's a good way to get excited about my own work again.

Just started building my email list April last year. Super important but if our government came close to banning TikTok. There’s no telling about the other platforms. Email list is direct access and a powerful sales tool

i understand that these platforms such as insta, twitter, facebook etc. can be swept from underneath us BUT these platforms are so major now that i believe that we will be warned first before they attempt to take it away from us, and that should give us enough time to build a website to continue reaching out to our audience, but it is also good to make a website now just in case, and also have other backup plans!

The rules are continuously changing. And also one day they can decide to close their web, or your profile as they did for US president.

You have to control your audience. If you think about it, imagine you have an email newsletter with 50,000 subscribers. Then you can direct them anywhere cutting out the middleman (UA-cam).

I don’t use social media and any business where social media is their main or even worse, only means of communication is off my radar. I won’t bend to that mode. It’s like I’m living in a forgot dimension. It is far more peaceful here in the quiet zone though. I like to have personal, precise communications with a business. A website with well laid out visual and text based information and email support is what I want.
Am I a dying dinosaur breed? I keep waiting for social media to eat it’s own head and disappear. I know it won’t disappear. It will never be the same.
Can we meet halfway, somewhere post social media? Some dimension more refined and humane than this current meat grinder that mangles body, mind and soul?

Truth! I've always heard you should never build your business on someone else's platform because they could choose to change an algorithm, toss you or go kaput overnight and your business is done. I have the use of 40 acres in the mountains-- I want to host techno- sabbaticals there. I love getting away from the internet and phones for days at a stretch. I got rid of tv 10 years ago and it has been transformative.
I remember reading something that stuck with me. I don't recall the exact wording but, essentially, it was this: "If something's not being sold to you, YOU are the product."
A good thing to keep in mind when dealing with "free" platforms, I think.

The YT growers don’t talk about email list building enough. Compare that with the author communities which talk about it all the time.
I have a list with over 450 subscribers. Email magnet, landing pages on my site, auto responder, the works.

I just went back and forth with a client because he wants to invest in his social media instead of his website. He is also planning to give product away for free just to people who follows and signs up for his company’s mailing list then keeps asking other people to look at my work to get their approval. I gave up, I’m done trying to convince him and show him that is a bad idea because his company will not see a profit if he gives away product to someone because they follow you and sign up for your email list. Today I have realized that not every dollar is worth the headache.
Your video is very timely once again Roberto. I am myself just getting started on this journey of owning my own traffic, it seems daunting, but it’s what we must do.
Likewise. We thought we were crazy doing this with our label. Now I don't feel so. The way I looked at it is, I have had social media for so long and forget the burden of having to learn them all and format content to suit each (4x the work) they bought me no progress and added little value to my life or business. When social media sites started growing in popularity, I kept telling my clients that they didn't NEED social media to promote their businesses. They should mostly run ads and drive people to their websites THEN use social media as an extra.
Algorithms are the worst thing to happen to social media. The fact that they ‘think’ they know what we like and now all we see is just one category of things
Yes, building an email list is improtant. Actually, it always was important, no matter what media you use to get them. And website is not needed (not a typical website), you just need an high converting landing page, where you connect autoresponder for follow ups. Its less expensive than a website that web developer would make. In fact, that type of website is hurting business, rather than helping it.
That’s what I want a landing page just to take in emails and about me section. A lot of people Iv notice keep dm me on IG with questions or collab and I just need to capture and further those relationships

I got completely lost in social media. People see my post less and less, people comment and comments dissapear as well as likes (on Instagram). On Facebook I had lives and the actually recording with a lot of views, but a while after they dropped the number of views on that. I want to remind you that I work with human rights. Social media ruined me, major people and partners still look for social media numbers.

To answer your question, I’ve gone back and forth with using social media as a hobby (mostly) and building a business, but now (even before today’s events) I find myself no longer interested in using it. Now I’m creating a new business and my desire is to build my business by having my own website and email list and by using things like UA-cam, podcasts, teaching platforms, and e-commerce. Roberto, I agree with you. Creating a website and email list can save your lives and interaction with customers if your channel or account is blocked. Sometimes, it happens and this is a contingency plan.
