On my 1986 starter, 68,000 mile car, the black paint looks like it was dipped, with a line crossing over onto the aluminum housing. I think rebuilt units the black paint is only on the steel parts, not the strange dipped overlap look.... So this may be a Bosch rebuilt from back in the day. The oilite bushings in the unit can be re oiled in place if you have a vacuum chamber large enough to submerge them in oil, pull a vacuum for an hour or so, thenet sit overnight submerged, atmospheric pressure forces them full of oil again.

Interesting. I wonder if these were dipped by the same folks that dipped Fuchs wheels...

I did mine last month, and I found your video. The title is misleading. It is not a rebuilt. If your solenoid was sticking you probably damaged the pinion gear and the crown gear that is bolted thru the clutch pressure plate. In order to do it properly you have to take the engine out if you see excessive damage to the crown gear thru the hole for the starter mounting location. Both my pinion and crown gear were damaged, so I replaced them. I found a pinion gear on ebay for $40. But when I tried to remove it from the rotor shaft I could not. I searched the internet for 4 hrs including your video but to no avail. The pinion gear is held by ten 3 mil ball bearings that fit each of them in the spline groove of the pinion shaft. You need to pull the small housing ring that keep the balls together and when you do, by pulling the shaft in the opposite direction each ball lift up through the ten holes at the end of the shaft, then, 2 things happen. the pinion gear is free from the rotor shaft, and all the freaking balls come out and bounce all over the garage floor. You will be on your knees with a flash light for a good hour,. I managed to find 9 out of ten. Good enough for me. Lesson learned. My advice always replace the solenoid with a new one, and replace the pinion gear if chipped or worn out teeth are found. The only thing new about your starter is the paint.

You forgot the grease! The grease is definitely new!
