Honestly, as a resident of the USA for last 13 years (now back in India) I can very strongly say that the case where you mentioned there is no representation is wrong. Media houses such as CNN, Fox News, Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post glorify and ONLY show the atrocities and bad side of Asia primarily India. Shows such as Modern Family and Sex and the City has equated Indian food with diarrhea (You can check episode with Phil and Claire talking about Claire taking trips to South Africa and India where Phil responds with diarrhea and not too different in Sex and the City). India is STILL mentioned as a third world country casually in conversations. I know for a fact that it is not the mistake of the people of America or west but it is what they are fed and the media houses. But examples such as Coldplay's Hymn for the Weekend, Slumdog Millionaire's success are all attributed to the visibly shown expected atrocities of my country. Extremely proud that RRR and Elephant Whisperer has scored so well at Oscars but the Academy in general has a favorable attitude towards the art that shows the issues in East, Parasite is another strong example of that where issues of poor domestic help are shown and are the reasons for the story to progress. Once again, there is no harm meant but these are some facts that the West exercises nonchalantly. Always happy to see your work and sincerely appreciate your research and recognition of the work of people from my side of the world. You both are rare and we all in the east applaud you for your efforts.
I am sorry to say but this video is just as bad at showing the truth if not worse than the western media. Its trying to boast of all the 'big' stuff and show all the skylines of these cities from drone shots.Cities like Bombay have had this skyline for decades now. Its no big deal. You zoom in and you see the real problems: lack of basic infrastructure. Narrow conjested roads that become a series of potholes after one heavy rain, open drains, wires hanging perilously overhead, poor waste management, few foot paths, several places without streetlights, stray animals everywhere etc. Then there is the lack of common sense and culture among the people; they still drive with utter disregard to road and traffic rules, even when there is a trash can, people dump waste all around it, public urination etc. What's the point of all these big skyscrapers, billion dollar industries, international fast food chains and brands if these basic needs aren't addressed🤷♂️. Several years ago there was an episode of the famous British car show 'Top Gear' in India.There was a big uproar in the media on how the show depicted our country. If you watch the episode, you will see that they just showed India as it is! One scene showed a stray dog urinating right next to several tiffin boxes filled with food that were to be supplied to customers. I have seen this several times in my city. If we want to stop the west from referring to us as a third world nation, these basic things have to change. Skyscrapers do not define a developed city as there are several developed cities with no skyscrapers. Manufacturing plants and industries are important as they provide jobs but the basic infrastructure, standard of living and culture of the people have to improve in tandem with these big developments. As long as we fail to solve these problems, the west will see us like this and one cannot fault them for it.
Also our very own stupid indians at FFI want to glorify poverty and despair of india to the west and hence are submitting such kind of depressing films for the oscars. The ultra sad thing about this is there are some section of Indians who support this by giving foolish reasons like artistic and masterpiece films, etc.
That’s why many people say Indians’ biggest enemies are they themselves😢
Rick , why is it always difficult for you to believe certain positive facts about India ? If a certain percentage of people were lifted above the poverty line then it is something to applaud and not make fun of 🤷🏻♀️.

Yes India indeed progressed and it radically reduced poverty with mega transformation which is visible in just 2 decades...but eventually everything isn't perfect as same as other countries...As an Indian I think India need couple of more years to eradicate it's major problems like radical economic transformation, employment, education, health sector, judiciary and police reforms..as a young Indian blood, I want to see India for the world development and a transformed India like European or American society with Indianess where Any friendly nation like American ,European ,Australian, Japanese people loves to shift here and work unhinged...that's India we want to be a part of World development and peaceful democratic world society
It is not about low representation in western media (Indians would be perfectly OK with it) but about the fact that whenever India is shown in the west, majority of the times it is portrayed in a stereotyped manner of a backward country - not just economically, but also socially and religiously. NYT and BBC are just 2 of the several examples. So though you have seen such videos many times, these become important as whenever people want to check India out or would like to know about India, they will have no dearth of "updated" India facts since there seems to be ample "un"-updated info about the country (as Rick prefers to put it) :)

In the 70s when our prime minister indira gandhi went to USA for grains, US news paper wrote "india comes begging" . So many instances like.these. Also US refused cryogenic engine technology. We were poor because british looted us and destroyed us. We learnt our lessons and we have stocked up grains for 4 years. So we will suffer only if monsoon fails for 4 years. Extreme poverty will perhaps be only areas where our grains could not reach like himalayan peaks.
Ever since the collapse of the USSR, India has been moving closer to the US. India is in fact THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD OUTSIDE THE NATO to have signed the 4 FOUNDATIONAL AGREEMENTS WITH THE US. India and the US along with JAPAN & AUSTRALIA, are part of the MILITARY ALLIANCE, the QUAD, which is evolving like a 21st CENTURY NATO, focusing on the INDOPACIFIC & CHINA.
I don't see US as partner after 10 years , as we're getting bigger and bigger , they will not allow another country's economy to be big as china.

Indian Foreign policy & Diplomacy is very neutral and not specifically sided to any camps. India is a part of many countries and groups for economic development, peace & strategic cooperation.

Many of the "facts" that he says are not true facts. India is develping no doubt about it. But claiming that 95 % of villages look like a small town is vastly misleading.
As someone from the poorest state my village now almost look like a town, it wasn't at all like that 10 years ago

The Indian government has this concept of a "Below Poverty Line". This is based on some arbitrarily low-income level based on a minimum cost of living - mainly getting food for the family. The income level needs to be updated with inflation. So yeah, given government figures, many people are now above this "Poverty Line". Does it mean that they are not poor? Nope.
I get that the gentlemen in the video are trying to show a positive side of India, but some of the "facts" are incorrect. I have been to many villages, and they don't look like that. That is one among a handful of exceptions.
Overall, though, the video is informative and shows India's progress over the years, as long as you take it with a few grains of salt.

Just to give an example extreme poverty is like Homeless people in western terms. India is working on reducing its poverty by gov schemes like (Housing for All) and ration for less income people. Its hard for them to believe some facts about India. It goes same ways even we find hard to believe how Homeless people numbers increased in California. How scary it is to travel in metro, how mass shooting happens in developed cities. Every countries have their own problems. But how India is developing it feels good to see.

Last 25 years have seen only bad coverage about India in American media which continues.So the neutrality bit is absolutely and completely wrong.The amount of intentional misinformation about India on channels like CNN,NPR etc is beyond ridiculous.And honestly reacting on videos like this is kind of pointless because there’re are lots of missing data points.’ Ally’ is a very western term.It means prolonged agreement on almost all major issues while taking sides.Traditionally US has supported Indias enemies.So next time US sends arms to a certain neighboring country,are we supposed to accept that as an US ally? It’s not possible.Only military dependent or subjugated eastern countries can be allies to the US.India is an issues based partner to the US and vice versa.
