Swades was a slow burn and only people with patience to understand the topic would appreciate it. Also the movie was ashutosh’s directorial venture right after lagaan, so maybe the expectations were sky high.

@@KrishanKumar-ec1ch lagaan wasn't the blockbuster you think it was. It was hit sure but it was released alongside Sunny deol's Gadar which was a monstrous success. The same thing with Swades, people didn't want serious Srk in a non glamorous village setting instead they went for the "real" Srk movie Veer Zaara that was still running in theaters.
And I don't know what you meant by entertainment, to me if the story holds my attention and I like spending time with the characters then that's entertainment, both Lagaan and Swades (tho very different movies) succeeded at that.

@@shrisuryarathinam97 who decides what is cinema or not ?
      What is cinema ?
Cinema is storytelling. Storytelling changes from culture to culture.
Everyone has own type of storytelling culture, these stories appeal to their own target audience.
      And
Martin scorcese only makes gangster movies and he doesn't need green screen.
That's why he may not like it coz he don't have to use it and probably doesn't even know how to properly intregate it in his film, he's an old school filmmaker, he's not adept to technology, he's not that smart (don't put him in godlike status especially when he doesn't know wtf is he talking about) he's just an old man rambling.
He still uses FILM reel camera and hates digital. Even when digital has higher quality and easier editing process.

    1. a quip about Aamirs short height?
    and/or
    2. certain physical lackings of asians (east asians for those not from North America)?
    or
    3. Some sort of quip about China India relations and Aamir Khan's popularity there being controversial.

Speaking of cult classics.. you guys need to watch Parinda (1989) starring Jackie (zatty) Shroff, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, and Anupam Kher.. and many more notable actors.
It was way ahead of its time in story telling, direction, cinematography, lighting (which is mostly dark and realistic), editing and even acting (given the era).
Some of RD Burman's finest compositions and Asha Ji's sweetest melodies.
Despite being nearly a decade older, Parinda has nearly as gripping a plot as Satya and is definitely one of the finest gangster movies from Bollywood in that era.
