The sound effects definitely spot on lol
John Woodworth : Word!
Can I upload my own sound effects
i'm taking nite classes on sound bites-I'm not doing well in class
Richard Holdener the sounds effects are spot on for imports mr 😎
@@richardholdener1727 does not sound like a 557 BBF! Maybe a little deeper from the gut LOL
This BBC guy is jealous of the factory 385 series Ford block , two nice engine builds 👍
I'm not going to get caught up in the Ford/Chevy battle. Thank god for any badass V8
@Steve Gregg The older I get the more I am liking all v8's. Don't know anything about the AMC v8, were they any good?
Rich would love to see a 390 mid block Ford built on the other guys series. Keep it up I love it all.
what i just saw was speed master has a big stroker crank for FEs too, it would be a match made in heaven!
It's actually not a mid-block, it's a bona fide big block, with unfortunately small bores (usually 4.0 to 4.05), except for the 428 (4.13) and 427 (4.23, if I remember right). The only "mid block" Fords are the 351M (an unholy 400 block with a 351 crank) and 400. They're really just tall deck, 2V Clevelands.
@@Cuttyman9 I've seen several 434-ish FEs on tv, You Tube, magazines, etc. That's a darned good size. A 427 block with 428 crank makes a 454, but good luck finding a 427 block (for under 2 grand). Beyond 434, finding big enough heads would be an issue, but that's what boost is for, lol.
Donell Muniz compared to a 385 series it’s a mid block. Windsor’s can get to 418 on a stock block.
The 385 series can be brought all the way out to 555 without an aftermarket block so 434 isn’t anything special but due to its large architecture it’s not really small but it’s also not really big.
Build ANY FE combo.
Blair Patrick won old iron class at engine masters.
360/390 block
428 crank. 410 combo!
Thanks Richard! Love seeing the 385 series represented. Keep em coming!
Man...I wish had a job like this, testing motors all day, listening to that sweet symphony of all those motors. Love this channel🤘😎
Thank you very much!
@@richardholdener1727, someone suggested the Torker 2 intake on an SR-71 headed 557. Isn't this old technology, or is it a good intake? I cant find anything on it anywhere. Can you compare it against other intakes like the Victor and Air-Gap?
Now let's see what this can do with the twin eBay turbo setup from the 454.
Let’s see a 557 with twin turbos. Could it hit 1500hp or more? Would an FMCC or aftermarket block be needed?
With boost that's 2,000 hp worth of motor. I would be surprised if the 2 bolt mains could handle that.
The fords love big cam. Bigger cam and more rpm you can go 1025ish for sure.
You should ask brule what he would really like to see and do. He has seen and done more then we can imagine. He pry has some crazy combination in his head that he would like to try
Love your work Richard, so easy to watch and understand.
I'm a ford guy but never really was a 460 but after seeing these results might actually think about building one
I wish you had gone for the Torque Monster version in the middle of the series. The 600hp mods + 557 cubes + and RPM Air Gap intake.
That might have been the ultimate Ford Mud Truck engine.
Great Job.
I have other 557 combos
@@richardholdener1727 Do any of them have Boost????
Please share more of the 557 combos!!!!
You basically built my motor Richard ...the only difference was, i installed 4 bolt main caps...Now i dont need to dyno it...lol I feel the minimal Gain with the tunnel Ram was a Testament to just how "Good" the Trickflow Single 4 barrel was..i enjoyed this..
That would be cool in a Galaxy or Torino.
Hey great video, great build. Used to drive stock truck with this engine mostly for towing. Always thought it would be a great base to build up from. I appreciate your hard work, special sound effects, and using what ya have available to get videos posted for us to learn from and enjoy.
Richard you should throw one of these engines in a car an hit the track one time 👍🏻🤘🏻
I'm more of a fan of a screaming SBF but I do love me a big thumper like this BBF. Great video, sir.
Jeremy Murphy : me too. Fords best engine was the 460 IMHO.
@@dj4monie. Ever heard of the 351 Windsor?
Chris Tuttle - 351 Windsor was a truck engine that Ford stuck us (US) with when they stopped the Cleveland. While companies have developed parts that make the Windsor work, the 351 Cleveland was a VASTLY superior engine. Just look at what the Aussies have done with the Cleveland. They have 351 Cleveland based engines making over 900 HP NA on pump gas!
@@danmyers9372 the 351w was introduced before the 351c...
big screaming 460 would be cooler
Killer motor, it’s amazing the potential, I would have liked to see an intermediate step with the 557 bottom end with the Ported heads and cam from the first video
That would have required pistons. A460 heads require a specific piston due to the valve angles.
@@meteor5452 I think he meant the ported factory iron heads, not the A460s.
Really love you're videos man keep up the great work
As they say, it doesn't matter what is written on the valve covers. Great build. Now I need to scrounge up another dominator because Richard says every big block needs a tunnel ram and every tunnel ram needs a pair of dominators ;-)
the best things come in pairs!
Awesome Awesome vid !!! I'm a FORD guy for life . I've built numerous builds . I started out bulidin and draggin the foxbodys , notchbacks . They've always been my favorite . Then later in life I jumped into the BB scene . I bought my first 460 block and punched it out to a 557 just like you did . Had all the goodies Super Cobra Jet heads ( the revised ones by Kasse ) but ended up trading it for a blown GT with all the goodies . Had a Vortec V2 . It wuz definitely a powerhouse . I really loved your vid . Thanks much .
By the way love the videos. Love seeing all the different combos. Too many channels focus on GMC and nothing against them but it is nice to see someone making awesome power from something other than just LS LS LS. Kind of like ice cream vanilla is great but everyone once in a while you need to throw in some seven layer bar Ben and Jerry's just to remember life is full of possibilities.
Then there are the 'equal' comparisons where the Ford has a flat tappet cam, the Chevy has a roller cam with even more lift and a bigger carb, lol...
With the iron heads. such a great boat motor. run all day, open loop cooling to keep the heads cool at 5500RPM
Too bad not more iron 429CJ heads around to test with. They were awesome when ported on my 490 (460), along with tunnel ram, etc. in the 1970's jet boat. I know not serious unless a Vdrive!
Only problem with BB boat power, the fuel consumption, especially with twins. The speed is nice, but the cruising distance takes a hit. 300gal of fuel would get us about 225mi with a pair of 454s in V-drives.
Do you have a Chevron Platinum Card, or your own oil well? 😄
Just one incredibly stout block, and with 2 bolt mains no less! Nice job Ford engineers.
That is really cool plus I learned something new which I did not know so thank you R.H.
Hey Richard,
You are a part of my morning routine (since this virus garbage started) and while I know that every engine is more or less the same, I’d love seeing the small block magnum and 440 tests especially with boost. No one is doing what you are doing on UA-cam and most certainly not anything mopar. Have a great day and keep em coming!
440 IS COMING UP
Tom McTernan's Pro Gas Mustang
He raced Pro Gas 8.90 index at Sacramento Raceway back in the early 80's.
The engine was a 460 with iron 429 Cobra jet heads.
He copied what was being done to some 351 Clevland heads and machined off the exhaust ports then raised the exhaust ports with an aluminum plate.
His Mustang was on the front cover of many car magazines.
The headlines were something like "it runs 8.90's on a single 4 barrel."
He ran a Lenco transmission. On the Ford 460 forum he said he thought it could turn an 8.50.
Great test they are great motors ran them for years
"even awesomer" that is the perfect description. Call Merriam Webster for a new entry. Thanks for the Vids, Richard.
I need to do a shirt
Man Richard got that secret sauce!!!! Lol
Rickybobby 03 Creatine for days!!!!
Love this Engine Combination.
Would have liked 2 see 👀 a pair of Jon Kasse heads on this Combination....
SR 71 heads or the Kasse Boss Hemi Head
Xcellent Richard .
Thx 4 the Build .
Real sweet 😋
Not a Ford guy, but I am totally Impressed. Keep up the great videos and the engine noises are kool.
Thanks 👍
Great video .....like to see more cam in this combo.
it could use more
@@richardholdener1727 Man, you guys live in a different universe than I do, when .800 lift and 274@050 ain't big enough! Wow!
Good evening, Richard, all the way from West Wales, UK. I like your videos, with the accurate info and dyno results. The Ford 400M was so enlightening, because I had a 400M ( ex Lincoln ) in my 71 Mustang, which we used to do a 6 day blast through Europe, going south to Nice, Monaco, ( for the vintage Grand Prix ) and then onto the Normandy Beaches, including Juno. That is one tough engine. It was an organised run with many prizes, we got the cup for the most petrol ( gas ) used. about $1800 in 6 days !! PS, Have you ever heard of the Schlumph collection ?? We visited there for a day. Amazing.
My absolute favorite engine
Keep 'em coming Richard! I loved the sound effects! I want to see you make 1000 hp on a Mopar 273 Commando LOL!!!!
I like the first version with the factory heads ported. Cheap power that noone can see! Basically a stock motor with cam and head improvement! Great combo for an old F150!
I Love the 429-460 FORD Engines. Gotta 1986 Mustang I've since 1994 was an original 5.0 LX, Has seen a few different Engine Combos. First up was a Mild Build Up of a 1969 351 Windsor, went High 12,s Then i built a 1972 351 Cleveland, still on the Mild Side, Hyd. Cam, Ported Australian Heads, went Mid to High 11,s Now it has a 521 Stroked 460, Going Low to Mid Nines, N/A through a 1000 cfm Carburetor, Mild Solid Roller, Out of the Box Trickflow Street/Strip Heads on 275/60 Drag Radials. Engine was built about 10 years ago. I Love the Low End Torque the Big Block FORD Produces. My Car will Always be BBF Powered, Don't want to Buy another set of Headers, Last set for the Big Block were little over $1,100, Kooks Stainless Steel, the Fit of the Big Block is Very Good in the Fox Body Mustangs. Actually fits Better than the Cleveland. And actually Lost just over 100 lbs. Over the Cleveland Swap, Cleveland had Iron Heads. When i did the Big Block Swap, Also upgraded the Front and Rear Suspension with UPR Chromemoly Rear Adjustable Control Arms, Rear Anti-Roll Bar, Front Tubular K-Member, Control Arms, Coil Over Shocks. And the Big Block has Aluminum Heads, the Cleveland had Iron Heads. Like i said the Big Block has Incredible Torque. I'm also a Big Cleveland Fan, i do miss the High Winding, High RPM, Cleveland. Also the 429-460 Engines have an Incredibly Strong Foundation to start with. One thing is for certain, You will Never see a LS, Small, or Big Block Chevy Under the Hood of my Mustang. Had it since 1994, and Don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. You can make a Big Block FORD compete against any Big Block Chevy anytime, might just have to Spend a Little More Money to do so, but it's Well worth it. I'm Loving my 521 Stroked 460. Shifting it at 7,000 RPM With my Built C-4. Like i said I'm a Big FORD Guy. The Only thing that's gonna upset me is that I'm on the Verge of putting a Powerglide in it. The 2-Speed is gonna help me getting off the Line with the Drag Radials, and also the Powerglide can be built to handle a Bunch more Power. Been thinking about doing a Large Single Turbo for a Few Years now, when Funds Become Available. I'm really liking the Garrett GTX5533R in the 94mm or 98mm Size. Or the Garrett GTX5544R in 102mm or 106mm. Most likely be going 102mm or 106mm. But that will be in the Future. How About strapping a Big Single Turbo on this 557 c.i. Beast that you Built Up in this Video ???
nice combos
@@richardholdener1727 Thanks. Enjoying your Videos, Keep em coming.
Great video on the motor i wanted to see!
Loved this test.
ABOUT TIME SOME BBF STUFF GOOD BUILD
Love it.....I once mud raced against a guy with a bronco ll that had a 385 series with tunnel ram. All 4 tires actually became airborne when it launched off the line lol. It would hop all 4 44" swampers off the ground then take off like a bat out of hell when dude let off the trans break.
I have a 870 hp pump gas 582 BBC Chev with AFR heads but boy Ford BB’s make some serious power. They appear to do it with less cubes and intake port volume/ valve size.
Quarantine Richard is still beastin
That was awesome!
Whaaaaaaaaa…!!!
Man thats Awesome!!
Hats off to you! Like to see a 118 lca same lift and duration. Love my 460 and 455 Buick’s
I LOVE tunnel rams! I have taken two bolt blocks and made them 4 bolt splayed. There are cap kits just for that...for Chevies anyway. I had to do a little machining and honeing, but it took really good power.
Appreciate all the 460 stuff lately! My friend is building his (70s ford f250 ranger). Hopefully he uses this info rather than build it wrong for his needs/want 🤣
Very nice. Love live the bbf
How bout a turbo on a 460?! That's the im wanting to build
Devin Berry check out maverick with 460 turbo.
But the block wouldn't have survived!
@@terryanderson9936 I seen it about three years ago
@@LukeSportsman 460 blocks are pretty rugged, I'm told. 1000 hp shouldn't be a problem. Just dont hit the button too soon, lol.
That's a recipe for broken transmissions. Do it!
Big block Buick 430 455 would be awesome to see for the other guys if you could find one. love the show never miss an episode thank you.
Nice job on the big block Ford I am a big block Ford guy myself and done a lot of testing also talked to all the big block Ford Guru guys and they all say the tunnel Ram is worth 30 to 60 horsepower depending on camshaft so you are pretty much in the range
Test was good thanks for showing telling, maybe I’ll make my 460 around in the 600hp be good for me. Well see ya next time see ya bye bye.
Please continue to make more BBF videos!!!
Rich, you do such a fantastic job at everything! Thank you for all of your grueling work at all of this.
You are careful to be very polite and do lots of Chevy stuff. So, I laughed out when you contributed to the soreness between the factions with the Chevy headers crack.
I noticed the various crossover points at the various levels 350 factory, 437, 550, and 735 ish at 5250.
I know rpm is a great way to increase torque. However, what could be done with boost to push a stock manifold to create Earth shredding torque to 5250? What if horsepower was great but no mods would be done unless it also added torque from the basement? Maybe that’s a subject of focus in the future?
Thanks man.
Really awesome ! Wish you would have tried the 557 with the stock or ported 460 heads and a more street table cam ! Great job. Please try a 390 and 429 some time
1000 or nuthin. 1108hp Kaase 557 is the highest I've seen on youtube.
I would love to see a mild 557 built for pump gas with a flat tappet hydraulic cam that will work with a 3000 stall converter.
I like it. I have a mild built 460 in my f150. People try to talk so bad about the 460. All that hp and tq with stock block and mains no problem.
Love the Ford content, more please! How about revisit the 351C and compare mild street builds starting with 2V heads. I just so happen to know somebody that owns one lol!
Would love more bbf content! Twin gt45's!!!!
Great video, as always!
I have a request; I would love to hear the sound of the engines before the dyno pulls (lopey idles, and throwing an unloaded Rev)
Who doesn't love the sound of a lumpy Cam and a high revving engine singing unloaded...lol
Thanks Richard;)
Pulls up the first dyno graph, dosen't say anything about the damn near 500 ft lbs at 2500 rpm, dude, that is nutz. Richard, I still have a MMFF issue with your Silver State flying brick blower mustang in my closet. Keep doing what you do, it's an awesome resource, everyone loves it. The only way is up, my brother! WAAAAAAAA!
Love the engine sounds hahaha!
Had an 85 Fox late 80s with the 460/C6 combo. Biggest problem was keeping it cool and header gaskets..forget it. Quick car though. Had to sell it due to "test only' ca smog.
The Chevy guys are in trouble because in the tunnel rams rule video that was actually the Ford run you posted! LMAO
I love N/A!
The chevy header design on a ford head is brilliant, makes it easier to install bbf in a gm car.
Most ford guys in boats run BBC headers with an adapter already . I wonder if this is why they do this ? Still cool to see .
@@steveelco114 far better selection of bbc headers especially for bigger inch motors
I like your thinking...
This is awesome... 😈 now add boost! Really want to see the 557 in a gasser. Or the FMT... 😎
nice combo, great effects, I have never owned a big block, but I want my first one to be one of those 632's i see in the magazines, seems like a good deal for a big engine then boost it.
Making the same fair build the 460 Ford will put out more hp and torque than a 454 c every time. Remember the torque numbers are the real power numbers.
Right on
i like seeing the stroker 385 series as i will be doing the same for my wifes truck 4x4 f250, but probably more budget/less flow on the top end so it makes a big torque number at a low rpm
Chevy headers stopped you from going over 900 with single 4v ! Great video! No more engine sounds from you please!
waaaaaaa!
Nice test although I also was surprised that the tunnel ram didn’t pick up more. No way the extra cost (manifold, extra carb, fuel lines, linkage) plus tuning would justify such a small gain. If I spent the $ to perform this upgrade and only picked up ~30 HP I would not be a happy camper.
Really cool!
I wanna see a old school Flathead or Y-block build
Both. Maybe bring in Mike Hermann (H&H Flatheads), and John Mummert or Ted Eaton (the Y-block experts).
Maybe the difference between the hp curves comparing the two tunnel rammed setups was the cam difference and the Wilson work on chevy manifold ?
Probably be fun ( and expensive ) to try a cam grind on the ford to match the chevy and send the tunnel ram ( and heads if they don't have that head data) and then see if they are much closer in power curves. I was really surprised the tunnel ram didn't make more difference from 4500 to 6k.
Great work as usual- always pick up something.
Wish i could pick your brain on the q16 since you used it on the chevy, also wondering if you used it with the Ford.
We tried at test & tune without nearly as good of luck.
Very cool. I’m thinking another point or point and a half compression and 10 degrees more duration on the cam would’ve yielded that 4 digit power n/a. I’d love to see more big hp n/a sbf and bbf combos.
Awesome content, would be great to see some small inch motors like a Buick 215ci and Henry's side valve v8.
Good job Richard, lots of power.
It would be cool to see some head comparison, sr71, C, Boss 9, AFR. And bigger cam.
I think they all require different valve reliefs
@@richardholdener1727 true.. it would be a lot of work
Hello Richard , would have been interesting fitting a 1150cfm or 1280 on the 4 barrel combination , see if there was 12hp gain bigger 4 barrel carb other wise nice piece . Heads great 460cfm
Richard, you really need to build a 2000 hp big block :)
Ford 460. The biggest big block (that actually works, looking at you Cadillac)
I believe the 385 series engine would have been a legend if Ford would have dumped the FE about 1962 and brought the 385 engine back then!
If you had put a 1.8 ratio rocker on the exhaust on the 557 it would have made around 910hp with the single carb. Comp came suck with their backwards lift split
Richard, have you thought about throwing a large ProCharger on this Ford big block as you mentioned before boost is always better, curious to see the numbers vs the nitrous fed.
Imagine that thing with a giant single turbo....my God.
One of these would be such a cool motor to put in a hard top Lincoln Continental with an intake and carb or intake and 4150 style TB to fit under the hood. Certainly not a max effort high HP style build but built for low end HP and cruising power.
It needed more cam, but impressive like Richard said ( 2 bolt mains) !
It’s be nice if you had a parts list and specs in the description. What do you do with these engines when you are done testing, I’d love to have this in my jet boat!!!
Might be a cool test to see how the Kaase boss heads would perform. But, that's a big chunk of change "just to see". Another cool test would be that mild 460 you built plus boost via turbo and see how high you can get the hp numbers with such a low buck mild combo.
what we need to know how to increase the power for low rpm RV motor
Would be interesting if you posted the over lay for this Ford 557 vs the Chevy 565 to see how the 2 differ. Ford has smaller bore but longer stroke 4.40x4.50 vs Chevy 4.60x4.25 Seems like they both peeked hp around the same rpm - same as the torque.
Would you be doing a horsepower receipe series on hemis in the future?
I curious what power you'd get from a 429 blower engine? 🤔.....thats what I am putting in my 78 zephyr...good info Rich!!
Take the 2x4 carb lid off the tunnel ram and make a solid flat one for it. Then cut a hole in the front and bolt on a throttle body. Then add an F3 progharger!
Awesome I didn’t think 460 would hold up as in breaking the block
Stock 2 bolt 460 blocks have been proven up to 1000 HP NA by racers for years.
Hey, Rich, I know ya like the big numbers, but I wonder if you could revisit this 557 as a low-end torque motor for a 4x4, tow truck, motorhome, Lincoln Mk V, etc. I'd like to see an iron headed 557 make about 700 lb ft, at around 2500 rpm!
BMW made a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine that put out 1400hp back in the early 80's for F1 racing. The block was from a regular car engine back in 1961 the M10.
S Wylie yeah I think he prefaced the one liter engine also being NA. as I recall the bmw and Honda 1.5s were twin turbo making like 4 bar in qualifying trim.
yep-very familiar with F1 turbo era
Wow didn't know this
