    Car buying isn't often a logic driven decision. It's often an emotional choice, and even used as a status symbol for the owner. Sometimes the badge on the front of the car is more important than how well it actually drives, and if the Kia Stinger isn't a total success, that's exactly what's to blame.
    The Kia Stinger GT is powered by a 3.3L twin turbo V6 engine producing 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft, with the option of RWD or AWD. The base model offers a 2.0L twin-scroll turbo I4 engine producing 255 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. I was able to drive the GT2 in both AWD and RWD, and it's a spectacular GT car. Plenty of power, predictable handling, a clean interior, and surprising practicality. But will your ego hold you back from a Kia badge?

    I genuinely want to see someone de-bagde one of these, re-badge it with Bmw badges and film the reaction when they drive their friends around with them thinking its a Bmw, then they say its actually a Kia.

      Ah ha, clearly someone has not been on an inside of a modern BMW. The quality inside of this KIA is low compare to that of a BMW and it is evident on the quality of its shell as well.
      Now driving wise, the M6 has it beat anyways.
      Now the price comparison... I would get myself a golf gti and save more money and corner better.

      I don't know how it is in the US but the problem here with "exotic" car brands (wich in Germany is about everything other than Mercedes, Audi, BMW, VW, Skoda, Seat, Volvo and the high class manufacturers like Jaguar and so on....) is that they are not as much cheaper to buy than they lose you money when you sell them...I had a 35k€ Peugeot once- got 7k for it when I sold it- a VW would have been around 15k..

      I got an opportunity to drive a Stinger GT (the V6 TT AWD) for roughly an hour on my own, and I was thoroughly impressed. For me, I would seriously consider this, regardless of the Kia badging. I could argue that their Optimas in the SX trim and Stingers in the base trim can compete with your top of the line midsize sedans from Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda.

    After viewing several UA-cam videos about the KIA Stinger, I had to test drive this car for myself. I test drove the GT Limited trim model. As I was adjusting my mirrors, I couldn't believe the limited visibility in the rear window. The visibility looks like the small brick was removed from a jail cell! Even when this vehicle has the blind spot monitoring system, it's challenging to shoulder check blind spots with the wide roof pillars.
    Every video I've seen talks about the same things such as acceleration, speed, sound system, brakes, etc. YOU are the ONLY one on UA-cam that mentioned the poor rear visibility on this vehicle!
    Great thorough review by the way.

    • @EngineeringExplained

    • @SwizzButt
      @SwizzButt 6 років тому +1

      I completely agree about the rear view mirror - very poor visibility, but that's my main complaint about getting the car. The side mirrors provide a large amount of visibility to make up for it, though. I don't have much of a blind spot at all when driving it just looking out the side mirrors. It's a fun and smooth drive, and I never thought I'd be happy driving a Kia, but I'm definitely glad I got it

    If i saw this a year ago, I would have gone for it 100000%. I think it rocks, i love the interior styling too, and that small window makes a very artistic nod to the small windows and fun back seats of 50's and 40's cars, when you are sitting in the back. I think the car is perfect. It does everything people want. Brembos, a reall sound system, two subs in complimentary locations, great sound, dynamic sensible suspension, even the tires people would put on as a replacements. really, between the stereo system and the tires, the price is -$2700 dollars. My limited 2017 brz with performance package needs tires and a sound system first year. That's a built in issue for cars such as WRX and many other sport cars when you try to compare prices of First Year ownership.

    KIA/Hyundai is doing what the Japanese did in the 1980s: shake up the car market and inject badly needed competition into a stagnant ossified boring market. Sure, I can buy a BMW for $20k more for the same specs, but why would I want to?

      Alejandro Bello I agree. The car would have sold a lot better without the Kia badging all over it.
      Hence why they used the “Special K” for the Forte Koupe. Or Genesis became its own brand. All to disassociate themes from Kia/Hyundai.
      Still call it the Kia stinger. But don’t put a single Kia badge on it. But some kind of cool fancy “S” badge. And it would sell better.
      That and add 100hp and drop the price by about $10,000 and NOW your competitive

      I remember when they came out as well. I worked for a Kia dealer as a tech. Everybody was hyping them up (especially our salesmen). Got to test drive one. They feel larger then they actually are. They have the same issue as the Genesis sedans have (worked for a Hyundai dealer for years prior to working for kia), while fast, they don’t feel fast. The stinger handles like a slightly smaller Genesis G80 on sport mode. I wasn’t impressed whatsoever. Then I saw the sticker price and realized that nobody in their right mind is going to pay $50-$60k for a kia. Well I was wrong. We sold them left and right for about 2 months, then sales slipped and now they are lucky if they sell 3 a month. On top of that, certain colors have adhesion issues and their resale value dropped like a rock. Why buy a new one at $55k when you can pick up a 1-2 year old one for $30k.

      C43 amg coupe, E92 M3, bmw 640i, Jaguar XJL 5.0, Acura TLX, TSX, RDX, Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE (Which is 40k smh) been inside of every bmw, been in rolls royces, genesis, mustangs, dodges, camaros, corvettes. It's the steering in that stinger that blew me away, just buttery smooth the quality of the drive, the feel of the interior and drive is that of a 6 figure car so yes it is easily justified to be the best for the money since it is pulling off qualities of a car that are over double the price and thats what value is defined as getting more for your money then what you paid

My point is you are saying "its the best car for under $50k" when in reality, its the best car for YOU for under $50k, since it is your money. Cars is all about preference and what the buyer is looking for in a car, I'm just sick of people always saying which car is the "best". This Kia isn't doing anything different than what any other car can do, its just the fact that its coming from a Kia is what got everyone talking.

    Can you do some interior video please of the interior? It's mostly the same 3 shots all the time while you drive on an average road. It's useful up to a point then it's time to move on and show us more detail of the car inside. What are the seats like, adjustment, features, dash, the usual things. So that we can see if this is a car we would like.
    How tall are you, can you fit in the front and adjust the seat exactly to your size, steering wheel position, rear seat comfort, space and roof height. Those things that might matter.
    Thanks though. It's a good video but I'd just like to see more info.

    Obviously here in Australia, we are a country that doesn't have the " Badge Snobbery " that is so evident in America and Europe.Kia's and Hyndai's are popular over here because Aussies take a car at " face value " and not the badge it wears.If a car is reliable, you get ' bang for your buck ', good warranty and aftercare support that's what most people are after.Instead you see comments time after time knocking the badge .Well for the uneducated you can change the badges and modify the look if you find the need.

Limited slip differential, napa leather, all led lights, advanced electronics, weighs less than the AWD, is faster than the AWD, handles corners better than the AWD, looks awesome, drives great, beats comparable BMWs and Mercs and Audis hands down. Hey Jason, jumped ship from an Audi A5 to a Sunset Yellow Stinger GT. Phenomenal car. Needs transmission tweaks, though. I don't really noticed much turbo lag, I know it's there, but the engine hides it well. My Sunset Yellow came with AWD, 19 inch wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. I miss my Audi, but I don't miss the maintenance costs. I am concerned about the brake pads and rotors, pads 300 bucks per each and rotors are about 110 each. It would be a 1600 dollar job to do all four corners just in parts. Got those quoted from the Kia service department.

    I think your car guy ego point is accurate. That stated, the brand association that comes with some of the other Marques comes from decades of delivering solid performance - in other words BMW and Mercedes earned their street cred. I think Kia should stick with it and they will build a performance following of their own. What gets tough, is that you could buy a one year old German sports sedan for the same money.... I would have trouble spending $40k+ on a Kia...

      @waynerm002 6 років тому +10

      Strunz0 Cars Curious, you don’t think they can make great products that should be priced over $40k? They already do! People hear the brand and think of cars from 20 years ago. Honda had the same issue when it first came to the US. I went for BMW some years back to KIA and have not had issues with their products. They are confident in their products to offer a long warranty, if they weren’t good all the repairs would bankrupt them. Value doesn’t mean cheap, but when you stack up what you get for the price, it typically is more than what you get from the competition. Folks that haven’t driven a KIA product need to go and check them out to get first hand experience instead of regurgitating things they hear from others with no experience of their own.
      As a car enthusiasts we should be open to appreciating a great car and the Stinger GT is such a car at a price point below it’s competition with similar performance. Remember, Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW M cars tuned this car, do you think he would make a bad driving car? For those that haven’t driven one go take one out and post your experience.

    • @danielallocca7770
      @danielallocca7770 6 років тому +4

      waynerm002 I think you’re misunderstanding my sentiment. I am not suggesting this is a bad car, I’ve never even driven one. I’m simply stating that for my hard earned dollar, I would more likely buy a one year used competitor. Right or wrong, I suspect the market place will agree with me and you will see these cars severely discounted in the future. For example, I drive a two year old Jaguar XF 5.0 supercharged with 470hp that I paid $34k for. I am not saying one car is better or more reliable than the other.... but for me, it would be crazy to pay over $40k for this car. Brands matter.... and at the end of the day, this car is associated with a brand that sells $15k economy cars so it’s going to be an uphill battle. I am surprised/confused by what Kia/Hyundai are doing. This would have been better off as a Genesis model.

    Let me tell you why this fine driving machine will fail. In Canada, KIA is asking 60k on the road (~$1000 per month lease for 36 mo with zero down). As a comparison, in Canada, Audi S5 Sport back with driver package is around 70k on the road (~$1030 per month lease for 36 mo with zero down). BMW 440i also has similar lease payment. Why get a KIA then?

      Accurate. I drive a kia and i love it, but it's about bang for the buck. A good car at a great price. I aspire to one day get a great car at a good price. Kia has to offer something at least 20% cheaper than BMW Audi to be able to sell. Based on the pricing listed now it's only 10% or less difference. If the 340 BMW is at 60k specced, the Kia needs to be 48k for me to even bother.

    • @CoreyBroadstock
      @CoreyBroadstock 6 років тому

      I understand that alot of cars sold now are automatic, because of technology advances etc. But this is a performance aimed car that dose not have the OPTION for a manual. Even atleast a dual-clutch automatic would be better,

      Corey Broadstock as someone who grew up driving manuals and love manuals, I understand where you’re coming from. But it’s costing a lot of money to design/develop manual transmissions which hardly sell, so for the sake of profits they’re sticking to automatics.

      We can't get over how big the space is back there. From outside it looks like it has no trunk. From the back seat there is so much room you'd think there is no space for a trunk and then open it up and it blows your mind. I can store luggage for two and it barely makes a dent. I can't get over how fantastic the design is - love it.

    Great review, Jason. As always, I learned some things that I did not know from watching it. Because of your thoughts I may decide to put it on the list for my next car. My hope would be that some software optimizations could improve the transmission logic and behavior but otherwise I like nearly everything else about the Stinger GT.

  • @substringzero1807
    @substringzero1807 6 років тому +28

    KIA hired the Designer of BMW's M Series to develop the Stinger, that's why the car is so performance-oriented. The downside about the Stinger is that it resembles too much of the other KIA sedans, especially the front end. It will be much better if KIA came up with a distinctive look for the Stinger.

      substring zero. Im pretty sure they decided to make a performance car for other reasons than what the stylist came up with. I dare say it was Kia that decided to make a performance car and it was that decision that led to the sporty styling.

    • @substringzero1807

      I like the direction that Hyundai/KIA is heading, contrary to their Japanese counterparts. My biggest concern are the transmission, suspension and cornering capability. This video shows the transmission has slight issue on sports mode, which is not a good thing. Traditionally, their suspension tended to be on the soft side, but I prefer stiff suspension. And so far, I have not seen any review on the Stinger's cornering capability. Usually when nobody wants to talk about it, it is probably not a strength.
      I am in the market for a new car in the next 2, 3 months, and the Stinger is on my list. But right now, the WRX STi is higher on my list than the Stinger. I will need to test drive the Stinger to get more information. By the way, when I do test drive, I usually warn the salesman on what's coming. :)

    I had a guy, who owns an Audi RS6 ride in my car and drive my car and my car at the time was tuned and running 420 whp and 450 torque so it was very similar in performance to his 4.2L turbo V8. When he had a chance to experience the car and forget it was a Kia and listen to the sound, feel the seats, feel the responsiveness of the car overall, there was a lot of respect gained. Get pass the emblem folks. it means nothing bad here. How many car manufacturers today engineer and build their transmission in house with the lead of Albert Biermann who was the lead engineer for BMW M Division? Folks, this car shifts as smooth as butter. Make no mistake, this car will be a classic someday.

    Why would you buy this if you cen get cadillac ats or cts v-sport for pretty much the same money or german competition. Price between kia and caddys is compariable here in europe but Im not sure how it is in USA though.

    • @metaleggman18
      @metaleggman18 6 років тому +3

      ICECUBE682 you could get the ats, but it wouldn't be as powerful afaik. The cts v sport starts at like 62 grand lol

    • @papa_pt
      @papa_pt 6 років тому

      Not that close in US. Only one of those you'd be able to consider for around 40k is the ats 2.0

    • @ICECUBE682
      @ICECUBE682 6 років тому

      thats interesting, the top end KIA Stinger in Europe costs 60k which is the same as the cts v-sport and the cheapest Stinger 2.2 liter diesel or 2.0 liter turbo costs 49k and cadillac base model ats costs 45k (not to mention it has better platform, I like the transmission better + you can get a manual trans, 2.0 t engine is more powerful, interior and equpement is way better and so is design language- basicly caddy ats is pretty much better in every category). And there you have german sedans in the same price range but with aditional better quality than cadillac and even more so than a kia. Not to mention better dealer coverage and so on... I almost forgot about dodge charger or a bit more performance oriented camaro or mustang, maybe even Lexus but I personaly don't like them.

    • @papa_pt
      @papa_pt 6 років тому

      damn well that's a HUGE difference. a base 2.0 stinger here in the US is 32k. 38.5 gets you the TT V6! And at that price (under 40k) I think it's very hard to beat with that engine and amount of car you get. I read that the G70 is supposed to get a stick so it'll be interesting to see how that drives...the CTS V-Sport is an awesome car, plus they have their own hot-vee engine now

    • @ICECUBE682
      @ICECUBE682 6 років тому +1

      Yeah the difference is huge becouse german cars are cheap becouse they can be, cadillacs are cheap becouse GM is trying to attract new buyers and KIA Stinger the top of the range model is 60k becouse its taxed to hell becouse its a V6 another important fact is that people in Europe don't like big price gaps from base model to top model thats why all car company acknowledge that, even cadillac(ats here starts at 45k and gose to low 55k, in America there are huge gaps in price from base to top model) thats the reason even base model Stinger costs 49k so price difference from base to top of the line model is smaller (10k). Yeah the new cadillac engine is amazing but 4.2 v8 hot-vee engine is going in brand new cadillac ct6, cts-v is going out of production next year. CTS and ATS are going to be replaced with the all new ct5. I hope in a few year I will be able to buy a new cadillac and cruise with it on beautifull euro roads.

    Jason, I say there's Hardly any turbo lag.. Sometimes drivers forget, when you push the pedal half way or more to get a good downshift and go, you're only feeling the pause to downshift or that pause that all automatics make (turbo or not) before it gets going, ... normal for all cars.... in direct turbo lag question, the least of any verhicle I've driven, which is no where near what you have done, but I am certain it's hardly any from driving one myself everyday.. Nothing wrong with getting something within one's budget, my friends think I am cool cause I don't waste money trying to impress people. I would say a rear 180 cam would be nice to supplement the visibility issue of that back window, with a display above the windshield and also maybe a rear wiper. Do the headlights turn or does it have side lights, I loved those side light on my old Oldsmobile, turning a corner and nicely lit up, why cause where I am it's dark a lot and snows, and that extra visibility from that extra light is so helpful.
