Use A Bike Chain Tool With A Shimano Connecting Pin

  • Any single-speed or standard derailer chain can be connected with a chain tool. Narrow 9, 10 or '11 speed' chains have plates that are too thin to make this a reliable process and connect with special links that are supplied with them. Some chains - for example Shimano - have to be broken and reconnected with a special pin. Others with a trick link that can be dismantled by hand.

    00:06 Step 1 - Place
    To reconnect the chain thread it back onto the bike(link) and hold it in place with a wire bent into a ‘C’ shape; a dead spoke with the head cut off is ideal.
    00:16 Step 2 - Direction Of Travel
    Make sure the replacement pin will be in the leading hole of the outer link in chain’s direction of travel. The replacement link should be in the forward hole in the outer link, in the chain’s direction of travel.
    00:23 Step 3 - Prepare
    Line up the holes and push the rounded end of the replacement pin into the link.
    00:34 Step 4 - Put The Chain In The Chain Tool
    Put the chain in the chain tool in the position furthest from the driving punch.
    00:43 Step 5 - Connect
    Drive the pin into the chain by screwing in the punch on the chain tool. Push it until the connecting pin is aligned with the outer link surface from the side that the pin is inserted.
    01:01 Step 6 - Check
    Remove the chain tool. Check the head of the pin is flush with the plate by touch.
    01:21 Step 7 - Break
    Break off the excess part with a pair of pliers.

      If you make sure you buy a original Shimano chain, it will have instructions.

      @@bengtmowitz5012- no they don’t. all it concentrates on is the proper orientation of the chain absolutely nothing about the pin or how to break it, etc..

      They used to come with full instructions but now you have to look on the Web. To be fair to Shimano they do have all the workshop manuals online for all their products.

    Where did you find your chain breaker? These pins really need the open receiving part. Most breakers I find (all really) have an enclosed "bottom" part where the removed pin goes into a hole or thru the center of a bolt. Can be done that way (pull the drive pin/bolt out, drop the pin in and they the chain into the hole, replace drive bolt. Tedious).

    "Put the pin in the leading hole of the alpha link in the chains direction of the travel."
    And hope to god your chain does not fail at a critical traffic moment like mine did. Buy a quick link and be safe. (Sram or KMC)

    Why do you have to make sure the replacement pin will be in the leading hole of the outer link in chain’s direction of travel?

      Because when putting the chain on the bike your tool will not fit between the inside of the chain and the wheel. Therefore you want to press it in from the outside of the chain

      @@rubbersidedown4804 Nonsense, it's still possible to install on the leading or trailing hole with the tool outside of the bike. I believe it's a mental relic from when old fashion joining links were installed with he two points trailing, like a sputnik flying through space!

      @@patrickhoyle8357 if you have the wheel on the bike and use a normal chain tool it would be very difficult to press it in from the non drive side

    I agree totally with Gen Porkchop! Any pin YOU push in can be pushed out under normal use. The pins in manufacture of chain are blunted at both ends and cannot slide out until you force them to break with breaker tool. Use a quick link and carry a spare for other breaks when ride. Quicklinks cant fail as i have one that connect the large double roller chain on my cars timing chain and if that were to fail, expensive engine dame would result in most cases depending on valve to head clearance. Also whats with all the fancy hyper expensive "special" greases that cost 10 times what a wheel bearing costs? I have used car bearing greases and have never worn or had to take up a bearing ever and about "drag" wheel wheel goes around smooth and free and if its good enough for a ton and a half of a car, its good enough for the bike wheels surely. Proof is that bike wheel works and bearing is perfectly ok over long term. I sure quality chains are better than cheap chinese but with steel it usually about the quality and hardening and perhaps design- same with car wheel bearings. Still a chinese chain costs $10 and name brand can cost $30+ so a good cheap chain you get 3 for each "top" chain. Maybe good economy and save money. If you lube a chain regularly it should last long time for normal road use. IMO but i avoid "money traps" and seem to repair all my stuff with "regular" products and never have a failure however there are times when special tools for bikes and cars are needed to avoid damaging the parts being repaired and other times you can make a tool that works just as well but not always.

    Shimano chains are a nightmare. I bought one with the quick link supplied but couldn't get it to connect. Just flip the bike and thread the chain thru the mechs once it's cut to size. Use a broom handle to wedge the crank and use Clarks quick links to join the chain by hand. They work well with Shimano.

    Thanks for this tutorial. My question is, should this be redone each time the chain is opened to be serviced? Do I need to use a new pin each time or can it be reinserted and reused?

      I advise servicing your chain without taking it off, less hassle, same effect. After each unexpected rainfall, that results a lot of mud, sand and all other nasty goo getting into the bike chain of my road bike, I just degrease it with whitespirit usign a brush and give it a soap wash with a rug righ after, finishing it with applying new lube as soon as its dry. Never had a problem with doing it this way and saved a lot of time.

    Thanks again for another excellent demonstration. ( Shimano's instructions on this and in almost everything they produce is way below par in IMO ). Do you have an opinion on the chains themselves as they are almost double the price of some of the Chinese variety which on paper at least, have better specification and what do you think about reverting to the quick connect link instead of pin ?

      Dedicated Shimano chains on Shimano gears will work a lot better when it comes to shifting gears. It's best to get yourself a chain compatible with the type of gears you have.

      @@roniswtf I think "A lot better" is relative. I've used SRAM chains on my shimano gears with 0 issues. I won't deny that the shimano chain feels a bit smoother to change but you really need to be shifting under load to notice and even then it's barely noticeable for me. It might be more apparent on the high end drivetrains but honestly I think as long as you're using the correct chain for your number of gears KMC, Shimano, and SRAM will all work fine.

    Good video. However, the fit of the pin I have (8 speed) is a devil to push through. Either I have the wrong pin (the dia looks similar and are labeled 8 speed), or it's something else. I actually broke a connecting pin tool trying to drive the connecting pin through and it doesn't seem out should be that hard. I had another feels whose done this job before on another chain and he tried, too, no bueno. So, odd situation over here.

    This bike was really easy to assemble ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    Thanks for the excellent video.
    I just watched one from Park Tool ua-cam.com/video/VdUQKVMPF5I/v-deo.html and they had a great argument for driving the pin from the wheel side out. By doing it this way, the bur created from breaking the pin won't rub against your cassette cogs.

    dont buy this chain, unless youre a daily biker whos got all these tools needed for this stuff dont buy the pin tech. Buy the quick link.
