My mom managed this mall in the early 80's. Spent everyday after elementary school hanging out here. The arcade "TIME OUT" was awesome and many quarters were spent there. I remember the dark theme with parquet flooring and the French Quarter. Great memories were had and sad to see it go the way of most other malls.

That's the Tanglewood I remember. I would always stop by Time Out and the Leatherhouse in the French Quarter. My mother worked at Dana's for a number of years as well. The parking lot would be completely full during the Christmas season and most of it would be closed on Sunday's due to the blue laws.

Reminded me of the S&W Cafeteria we used to have in Richmond, Va., and also the PIccadilly Cafeteria. PIccadilly would alternately be pretty good, then too salty, then pretty good again. Their bourbon chicken was originally seriously good and then deteriorated from the use of inferior ingredients. The one we had in Richmond, out on West Broad Street, had a cafeteria line, from which you chose what you wanted, and then at the end of the line you paid the register. After sitting down, there was waitstaff that would get you coffee and refills, napkins & the like. Because of the way this was organized, I never knew how much to tip, or if the server was actually getting paid more than the $2.13/hr minimum for waitstaff.

I noticed (from what I could see) that the K&W looked well-kept. I didn't see any crumbling booth seat covers, e.g. There's one Aunt Sarah's in Richmond, Va., that desperately needs some recovering of bench seats, but I think they were hanging on by a thread even before the coronavirus situation. The food there was standard pancake & comfort food, at reasonable prices for what you ordered, and the food that I had was tasty and edible. Of course, with that kind of food you really get a lot of salt, so you do need to moderate the fare.

Wow, what a sad day. I moved to Roanoke in 1986 in 4th grade. This mall was the epitome of a great 80's mall. Actually, Chick Fil A opened up one of it's first locations in this mall in the early 80s!! Most people don't believe me but it is true!! Anyway, Roanoke was a bustling little town with great middle class jobs and then came the 2000's, and with that the jobs left as did the wonderful era ole Tanglewood. Thanks for the great memories of my youth!!

Matty J Man, my condolences to you all living in the Salem/Roanoke area. That place has TRULY become a collapsed, former manufacturing town. There is an ENORMOUS amount of decay in that area from the number of street lights which either don’t work or the city doesn’t have enough money to keep them in operation, to the crumbling sidewalks and potholes that litter, virtually that entire area. When I was trapped there in a snowstorm about a year ago, the city only cleared 1 1/2 of the 2 lanes on Hwy 11, making driving through that area even more dangerous than the snow itself! I really hope you guys who live in that area start to wake up and realize that you are TRULY being screwed due to the systemic nature of the economic system that we live in. I travel through quite a few places in the south and Roanoke/Salem has got to be one of the worst places that I’ve been around and through quite extensively.

To illustrate how different Roanoke is vs 30 years ago….back in the 80s and 90s the high end jewelers Finks had a shop on the lower level next to Leggetts. This store had every Rolex watch made at the time as well as Tag, Omega, etc…. People spent big money in that mall. Starting with the nice friendly lady at the front to the great atmosphere and the fine foods. Everything in my area is now fast food. Every business in my area is a discount store. All the others were trying to make a profit so they didn't advertise discounts and promise free refunds so they are closed. It was sure good to see a thriving business. 😄👍

It’s a beautiful building. I still like to walk inside though with AC Moore closing I won’t have much reason to go to the mall proper. Roanoke is a beautiful city in the spring and summer, lots of outdoorsy things to do!

It was a really good mall, until Valley View Mall was built on the other side of town. Then it started losing businesses, and steadily declined. Ive heard from some who still work there, that supposedly new shops are coming in. I certainly hope so. It's a nice mall on a good part of town, very convenient too.

great mall for social distancing .... I live here (not in the mall) but grew up going here all the time. It used to be a GREAT mall with toy stores, chess king, merry-g0-round clothing (SP), Radioshack, tons of food options, brendles, A PET STORE with Dogs, Orange Julius, Magic, and all sorts of shops.... The crowds were huge back in the 90s... Now is is a dead man's land where you can ear echos in every corner. Rumor is they are putting a medical facility in part of the mall (Carillion)

I used to go to this mall every now and then when I used to live at least 45 minutes away from Roanoke. I do remember on a regular day or even on a Saturday, that mall didn't have a lot of people going through it. But, it would get a bit busy on Black Friday. For me, it's different to see how that mall looks now compared to how it looked since the last time I went there several years ago.

I'm from Virginia and I used to go to the mall a lot with my mother when I was younger. It used to have a few stores that I liked. And they used to have a big Christmas display and my mom would take me to see Santa' there sometimes. But Valley View was the mall my mother and I went to a lot more and we still do. It has all the stores that I liked and is always busy. Tanglewood always seams empty to me now. I felt kinda sad when we would walk around and see hardly anything. My mom liked going into AC Moore and they used to have a comic book store at one point that I liked. Other than that, I don't really remember any store there that i really liked. I do wish that they could do a remodeling and bring in new stores to the mall. I'd love to see them bring it back someway.

In 1985 to compete against the opening of Valley View Mall, Tanglewood did a complete renovation removing the iconic fountains and replaced them with new fountains. The sole surviving fountain is the one in the middle but in 1985, the colors were blue, green, neon, and had a Mediterranean look about it throughout the whole mall.

  • @mattgillis329

I remember the Tanglewood Mall well, even though I only stopped in there twice, impressive in its day. Big Lots had also maintained a store there in part of the old Woolco for several years, until they consolidated with its store near Valley View Mall some years ago. And of note, AC Moore (the arts and crafts store) filed bankruptcy and may be either shutting or revamping to Michaels, not sure yet. And K&W (next to the old Kroger) is a decent place to eat, actually, it's a chain based in Winston-Salem, NC, my old hometown, and locations throughout the Carolinas and Virginias. If you're back in the area, Ace, might also check out the old Crosstown Mall (not far from Valley View) and Valley View Mall, both up the road by the Roanoke Airport, since they've both been going thru some serious changes over the years.

I was wondering when someone was going to talk about it. If you get a chance you should go to Aviation Mall in Queensbury NY too. That place is horrible. They can't keep stores in there.
