First of all, to lead out with the statement that Big Lick was so named because of salt “outcroppings” while showing a large rock crystal, presumably of salt, is a total mischaracterization of what the Licks were - Big lick, Long Lick, Mud Lick, etc. Do you think the salt was sticking out of the surrounding hills? These geological features were ephemeral pools where the groundwater collected in low-lying depressions which contained salt and other mineral deposits over top of thick impervious clay. They were marshy, swampy, mud bogs that left a salt/mineral residue as the water evaporated. They were most definitely NOT rock salt outcroppings! From that erroneous beginning, everything else is contorted, misconstrued, and absolutely confused!
Learning my family tree. Found out my grandfather and his parents were from Roanoke. They ran a ferry boat business there. He and my grandmother ended up coming to Philadelphia!!! Where we have been since. Thank you for this video. So happy to learn more about my heritage. They farmed , ran an ice house business.

I grew up in Roanoke during the 1950's. I spotted my father's Mountain Avenue medical office in Old Southwest on this map. It was one of the oldest houses in the city, constructed in 1886 (only four years after Big Lick changed its name}. It was easy to find, as it was the only house on its block in 1891.
A note on IRo lm and the smelters in Roanoke. Dozens of Iron mines were around the Valley. The Blue Ridge Parkway even travels over several in the mountains around ROANOKE. The West End area around thirteenth street had at least six mines in operation. It is now in the center of Roanoke Today.

I learned a lot about my town... thank you for doing this research! If it makes you feel any better the hotel next to the jail is no longer a hotel. Lol 😊 The jail is still an active jail though. Interesting all the railroads that were here but it’s just Norfolk and Western now. A lot of the manufacturing places are still here though. The Foundry is where my grandparents met and a large portion of my family worked....also still active. The town looked much nicer back then though 😊
Ginger L it hasn’t been Norfolk and Western since the early 80’s. It’s been Norfolk and Southern... hence the big freakin NS on the side of the big shop building.
This place was good too me (except county school system) growing up but, thing's change. My old neighborhood (boxley hill's) used too be middle class. It's unrecognizable nowadays. I raised my child outside of bloanoke. It was like roanoke used to be. You never met a stranger. The next door neighbor's would greet you and were very good people. I mistakenly sold my roanoke book to the book store ondy corner of 419 right after you cross into Salem. Across the street from lakeside Park. It was old and went back to its development
Not far from Roanoke.. just a 15 minute drive east on 460 the historical town of Bonsack which had train depot there but also 2 brothers built 1 blanket mill . yes they hand crafter and made blankets. They started selling the blankets to settlers in Roanoke and the business was booming so they built another blanket mill . At some point they were attacked by the patriots and one of the mills was set on fire because they were thriving off of the blanket sales to the Roanoke railroad settlers and travelers. They were warned to abolish any future sales or they would then burn the second blanket mill down. The loss of first milks left many of the town unemployed and those folks moved into Roanoke to work or went elsewhere. The town grew small and sales of the blankets were all but diminished due to the attacks . Then the civil war came and the 2md blanket mill was lost due to the civil war and today there is a small smokestack still standing but that's all and the town of Bonsack VA was unpopulated and gone. When you referenced the blanket mill on the map I believe that was either the 460 one in Bonsack or maybe they were building a 3rd blanket mill in Roanoke due to the economic growth of the company but was never carried out due to the acts of war and attack from the patriots. The store is in Google under Bonsack. VA. Wikipedia
Enjoyable!!! I'd hope to find info - maps and especially photos of the "Catawba Branch" rail line that N&W acquired from The Catawba Rail and Mining Company back in 1908. This 9.5 mile stretch of railroad originated in Salem, VA and extended towards Catawba Mountain via Mason's Cove / Creek valley. It was also instrumental in getting the Catawba Sanatorium built and also transporting patients to and fro..The rail was dismantled in 1943 and the scrap iron of the tracks was recycled for the WWII effort. Any info will be greatly appreciated! (especially photos! :)

The Steel Works would become the Roanoke Bridge & Iron Works located in the original swamp area that the Big Lick name refered too. The Company over more than a hundred years would produce steel girders and the special multi armed uprights that went into the Golden Gate Bridge, the Verzanno Narrows Bridge in NYC, several other New York Bridges (the I-95 George Washington Bridge was the first major build and where it became famous for it's Special uorights) the World Trade Center NYC, Oakland Bridge CA, tens of dozens USA skyscrapers and several hundred Long Bridges across the USA and hundreds overseas. (Even the Hoover Dam used it's output) The more complicated the heavy and large piece of steel the fewer firms that could produce it. Roanoke Bridge was King in it's niche only Germany was it's equal. Only in the 1990s as the US Steel industry hit it's low point did it close. Then it became a trash transfer station owned by the City and the garbage carried 20 miles to a landfill by the first purpose built Garbage railroad train. The railroad cars were designed and built in the East End shops showed on the map it produced coal cars until 2015 when construction was moved to Mexico several hundred thousand rail cars were made and several thousand Railroad steam engines designed and built including the 611 engine that pulled the 112 mile per hour Pocahontas and Powhatan passenger trains.

HaysiKing2 That would be really neat to see! I’m from Sw Virginia and have been working on my Genealogy of my family. Some of them live in Grundy and Clintwood areas. I’ve found census records showing some of them lived in Russell county before part of it became Dickenson. And also some old newspaper articles that are interesting.
TWDL RG Just happened upon your comment. Some of my family lived in Grundy last name Burleson and Ratcliff but my Mom moved to Roanoke. I visited Grundy a few times before they pushed the people out. It would be interesting to see history map on Grundy.
Roanoke, VA is the worst place to live in Virginia , let alone the USA. The people are unfriendly as well as Hotel Roanoke. I would not let my dog sleep there! Roanoke should be a ghost town!!

I believe the brewery was on Wise Avenue because my aunt lives over there and I heard something about that. They tore it down though.
