  • Valley View Mall is a lively mall in Roanoke Virginia, not to be confused with a similarly named mall in Wisconsin, nor the defunct one in Texas. This was a mall I wanted to hate, but ended up coming to like. Join me & see for yourself.

Its good to see a mall that looks like the 80's and 90's (of course with different retailers) as I remember malls back in the day. Parking lots so full that you had to park far from the mall along the highway. (holiday times) I have been to this mall once, and never thought one way or the other about the ceiling. So many malls, some nearly next to each other, and then the shake out began after 2000. So covering this mall is a break from the bleak looks of so many malls today. Great work Doomie.

This was the mall of my youth, it looked much different back in the early 90’s with the water fountain in the middle and it also had a movie theater built in. Once upon a time they even had a Jurassic park theme with dinosaurs all over the mall. Haven’t been back to the Noke’ since 2014. Thanks for the much awaited update 👍

@flywrightdrones I drove the jurassic park train in 1995! I also worked at The Record Bar when it transitioned over to Blockbuster Music 1996-97. 😅

And to think this was the “new” mall! Many Roanokers can still remember Crossroads, The Roanoke Salem Plaza, Towers Mall, and later (in the modern 70’s) Tanglewood.

Because there is really nothing out there to fill them with. Maybe Primark but I doubt they would come to Roanoke.

@Doomie Grunt Although aesthetically UNPLEASING (and appearing filthy) the open warehouse ceiling in the main corridor of the mall would GREATLY assist in the maintenance of the flat roof! There is nothing more vile and disgusting than seeing soiled or my favorite DRIPPING ceiling tiles. Flat roofs (like those in commercial areas) have almost no length of life to them.

I 100% agree with you on the warehouse-style ceiling. I hate that look, makes me feel like I'm shopping in a Sam's Club, not a mall. My first impression with this mall was that it was an ugly attempt to mimic Rouse.

You should have seen this mall in the 80s and early 90s. Trees and fountains everywhere, the place was beautiful. I was a mall rat in the late 90s and worked in at least 7 stores there, bunch don’t exist anymore unfortunately.

I honestly think your initial impression was right. It's a pretty bland looking ball, but not hideous. Which would be better in some ways: a really hideous mall would at least be memorable, whereas this just has me saying "yep, that sure was a mall."

Don’t know how young you are but this mall was great years ago. As with most malls now, a lot of stores have left, went out of business, or changed locations inside. Lots of nice outparcels were present too

i was on a deep dive of dead malls, and i thought "surely not valley view, not MY childhood mall" ...bruh... what do teenagers do now??? this is all we did as kids was hang out at this mall... people from SWVA would drive hours to come to this mall just for something to do... like... ?? literally my entire graduating class worked here... lol the times have really changed. it's crazy to see just how fast malls came and went. i'm 32 so i'm glad i got to live in the good days of the mall era.

This is my hometown. I am *just* old enough that I can joke about remembering when it was all farm land. I remember going to that mall in the inaugural year, I was seven. I'm glad the creator came to appreciate the interior of the mall. It has gone through small revamps over the years. What doesn't quite come out in the video is how much light is present. With human eyes, the utilitarian ceiling isn't quite as noticeable as all the natural light bouncing off the surfaces of everything. I also miss the fountains. The main circle in the mall had one that seemed like it was two stories tall when I was a kid. Y'know... maybe it was.

Nice video! Yeah my first impression of this mall(like you, lol) is that I thought I'd dislike it, but thought it wasn't as bad aesthetically as I worried at first it'd be like. And thankfully not on the bland side, though small parts of that mall look slightly bland(i.e. the wing of the mall by Buffalo Wild Wings). That said at least it isn't as bad as a Hull mall, that's for sure.
And yes, I'd TOTALLY support you moving up in the timeline, when you upload and debut your Tanglewood video.

I've been to this mall before and it's pretty nice. I think the food court could use a couple more restaurants considering there barely one but your right about the ceiling. Looks like your walking through a Walmart.

I haven't been to this mall in over a year. Used to frequent it in my younger days. Saw many a movies when the there was a theater in the mall. Beavis and Butthead. South Park. Speed. Die Hard 3. Many more. Went just about every weekend. There was once a carousel and a big clock in the mall Don't think there were any water fountains. I worked at the Walmart there in the late 90's. I remember on the weekend before Christmas the traffic was backup up all around the mall.
Tanglewood I need to revisit and document. Have not been to it in over 2 years and I have seen it it deader than ever. May do it when I am recovering from a upcoming surgery and need to get out and walk

  • @Dana-kb5mk

I felt like you did at first upon entering. Looks very bland, vanilla. But after hearing the history & seeing some of the plant, sign and other classic Gruenesque elements (no fountains tho dammit), I came to see the charm and appeal. Also there's a Penney's. Gotta have a Penney's.
Thanks again for the great vids. Keep up the fantastic work my friend 😘♥️🖖

At first I thought all the paneled ceiling lights were skylights, but it looks like all the angled ones are actually fluorescent lighting. Surprisingly convincing as "natural" light but strangely retro futuristic alien space ship like when you realize it isn't. Weird. Additionally, the color temperature of the lamps seems remarkably well matched to natural daylight and they don't seem to have allowed a single dead bulb to remain unreplaced. Very weird.

    • @Daniel_s444
      @Daniel_s444 2 роки тому

If they are what you think they are, they would be led panels. Which could be tunable and dimmable LEDs allowing for them to change color temperature during the day! (mimicking the actual sky) WOW!!! THAT would be bas assed!!!!

Maybe Im old fashioned but I prefer ceilings with skylights, bright tiles and FOUNTAINS. That being said I think the bright floor tiles save the mall from looking like a warehouse- I actually ended up liking this one in spite of the more modern look.

I am wondering if you went early, late, or the middle of the day. Also, you went kind of fast so it was hard to see all of the stores. It's 2022 now so I am wondering how the stores are holding up. Every mall is changing and I don't like seeing them close. I thought it looked like a pretty good mall but no shoppers. I am wondering how the stores can order clothing when no one is buying. I don't like, at all, the outdoor type malls. The mall used to be a place you could spend a very happy day and lots of money!

My mother was an activist in the 80s who went around to people's houses with petitions trying to prevent the takeover in the farm land next to the airport. Her father was Morris V Randolph, a pilot at the Roanoke airport who tested planes and did other things. She attended an elementary school in the area which they also torn down which seems to be a habit of Roanoke Virginia to destroy historic monuments and buildings. Very disturbing that I saw none of the bench statues or even the wishing well, in this video. We would always explore as teenagers and meet our mother back at the wishing well full of pennies. I always wanted to scoop all the pennies out, it seemed like such a waste and I was such a poor kid. I always hated this mall anyway. It was always full of people and caused extreme anxiety. I can't wait for the day it IS derelict and abandoned. It deserves to rot in my opinion for taking people's farm land and turning it into this garbage concrete jungle....
