A lot of what he said is obviously true (although you would expect these things to be said from a fan of rival club not their own manager) BUT you could sense from the last few mins of that press conference that his intention is nothing other than to protect his image and his reputation as a manager. When he says things like you can keep changing the managers but nothing will change and I've seen the managers they've had on the bench etc.. He's just afraid his reputation is going to be affected by this and that's why he can't hide it anymore. That's just my opinion though

I'd not say that's failure, yes people are judged on trophies at the top end but Poch still did really well with Spurs. Levy seems so desperate to get a trophy to appease the fans he is hiring short term proven winners like Conte/Jose when he should probably just try and do what they did with Poch, get a young hungry coach in who may need time but will actually develop the players who are there.

It’s the fact that this seems like it’s too protect his own reputation, not to help Tottenham. His assessment of the attitude of the players is absolutely correct and I’m glad he said it as a a spurs fan despite conte obviously having his own shortcomings as well. Too many players coast along at spurs and the level we want to get to doesn’t allow that. Conte’s words had to be said

    • @dddgtsd

true but ultimately the buck stops with him, his job is literally to develop and motivate the players. It's not easy with the overpaid prima donnas these days and the deep rooted cultural issues at the club but that's why he was hired and paid huge amounts. If he is suggesting the players aren't motivated then ultimately he has failed a this job. If he's saying look I got a squad here who are busting a gut but we're just not good enough and lacking in talent, then it falls to Levy.

Spot on, as always. He can be right (which in many ways he is) but also be at fault. You can’t speak out publicly like that and expect respect from the players. Clearly an action of self-preservation, especially with the reports that he’s met with the board and told them his words were directed solely at the players. The players are not good enough, but he has failed to show any willingness to adapt. It’s difficult to commit to a manager (particularly one who demands such unique player profiles and general setup) without commitment from the manager himself.

  • @jkif98

Speaking as a non Spurs fan agreed. He's also been backed with signings and has a DoF who has worked with him in the past.
It's one thing to say the financial constraints enforced by Levy has led to a squad that's not good enough. (Although not good enough to beat the opponents they've had in the cups is debatable.)
It's another to say it's led to a squad that are mentally deficient. Romero a world cup winner. Why didn't he veto signings like Bentancur, Kulusevski, bring in an attacker he trusts the mentality of instead of splashing 60mil on Richarlison.
It seems all done to absolve himself of blame. It also implies the rest of the season doesn't really matter. Seen many say that Pocchetino had no success as he didn't win a trophy.
Many may agree with that. But if you are working under a manager who doesn't rate your mentality, your ability and shows no desire to improve it unless he signs a new contract are you really going to be as motivated as clubs scrapping for Europe (who value European football) or clubs fighting to stay in the PL?

I think Conte has a point about the mentality of some players and perhaps the ownership of the club - apparently those high up at the club are genuinely confused at the hostility from the fans and think that just competing for european football is good enough, but at the same time, 100% agree with James that Conte has been in inflexible this season, completely mismanaging Son, and is obviously not creating the right environment for the players. It's been an open secret since January that he wants to leave at the end of the season, and his squad rotation has been a joke. The stuff with Spence not playing was weird, Danjuma, quality player, hasn't seen the pitch since he came in (fucking Lucas has played ahead of him) and Richarlison is obviously confused and frustrated at his lack of game time from his quotes last week. He may have a point about the culture of the club, but he's made so many perplexing decisions. I want him gone TONIGHT!

It's all too clear that Conte wants to get sacked now, but should we do him that favour? It'll cost us, but on the other hand not qualifying for Europe will also cost us. He's very clever that way, also refusing to take his own part of the blame even though everybody can see that we never had the players to fit into his system. It''ll take years and sh*tloads of money before we do, and even then we'll still just be 4th or 5th favourite to win the league. So why give in to his demands? It's silly.

    @prazzolwagle9143 Рік тому +5

As a Spurs fan, I have not been that much of fan of his football but I am tired of seeing the same players throwing managers under the bus. Going managers after managers and being rigid to fulfill their demands when you have opportunities every window to refresh is just baffling. Non of the managers before or after Poch wanted huge money to make required changes to fix certain gaps (biggest one being the back-line). However, here at Spurs, we are about to give Eric Dier a contract extension for 3 more years when we are not even sure who the next manager is going to be. The problem is bigger than the tactics, James. The culture is the main factor right now. A lot of players who are here for more than 9 years now are running the show. They're too comfortable. I hate to say it but look what Arteta have done. He's gotten rid of the deadwood even for a loss. But Levy just hands extension when it's clear managers don't want players like Dier, Davies, Lloris, Sanchez, Sessegnon, etc. These players have let us down on numerous occasions year after year. Even going by the tactics, it's clear that Conte doesn't trust his players in the back so he plays deep defense whilst the formation demands to press teams a bit higher when being defensive. One through ball whilst playing a high-line and you're done (example the first goal scored by Saints). 23 years, 1 trophy, and 15 managers onto the 16th, I think it's high high time to look elsewhere to identify problems than just managers. Mourinho - When a player plays injured to help his team to recover from two bad defeats, this can happen. A man, team player
Poch - He is a fantastic professional and boy. Only I can praise him because his position wasn't easy from the beginning, but he kept fighting, always waiting for his opportunity to play. It’s cheaper to maintain a top 4 finish than push for the league each year, or build a full squad when you can scrape a decent first eleven. Conte isn’t blameless and the football is horrendous, the two in midfield doesn’t work and the wing backs are so sub-par (Porro is showing promise, Perisic should be used as a Winger, and don't even get me started on Sessegnon). Under conte there is no ride just hoping that we that we play some good football which doesn't happen. You have question why dier davies sanchez lloris are still at the club because they have proved to be unreliable. Then they have added more unreliable players to the squad this season with lenglet sessegnon perisic. We have known for 3 season that defence isn't good enough. I have never seen son and kane look so bad. Even the players don't look like they are enjoying their football. I agree with you about poch he has been the most successful manager under ENIC. We are a club built on attacking football and being brave . Conte jose nuno are the oppersite of that. It doesn't surprise me it hasn't worked under those managers. You can't go away from what you are. Major changes needed and Poch or Luis Enrique would be perfect. We have to say good bye to some of the players that have been here a long time and do nothing. I actually somewhat disagree with all the hate Conte has got for simply being honest (Spurs fan). He's a winner and he wants to change the narrative of Tottenham being "spursy" - and has been slowly trying to do that since joining. He's been upset and wanting more previously and he got a bit of a response from it. But with recent results he wants to rip the plaster off and say enough is enough of this. And doing it publicly, yes it is bold but I honestly think he was right to do it. Because it's bigger than 1 game - our recent results have left us trophy-less for yet another season. Whether Conte leaves or not (and I think he likely will), at this point in time he thinks the best way he can help the club is by giving the players and the public a reality check. Doing it the hard way is the only way to break our habits. And yes Conte himself holds some responsibility, the football hasn't been great, but it is bigger than that. Conte's tactics aside, the line-up against Sheffield Utd was eeeasily good enough to win the game and it's similar with the Southampton game - the players need to step up and take responsibility on the pitch more. I do understand the points that others will/have made on all this, but Conte is still an elite level manager and I trust and agree with his thoughts. He definitely shouldn't be getting sacked based off of this in my opinion. Although I'm not against the idea of him leaving after the season ends.
So I personally disagree however still a great video James!

It's all very "do it perfectly now or fuck off because i'm a winner and we have to win", without wanting to put the work in to actually create a winning environment.

Yet he was the one who decided to drop Harry Kane in the FA Cup. He was responsible for bringing on defensive players when we needed a goal against Milan. Yes the players are at fault but he has to take more accountability for his actions. He never comes out and says I was wrong or maybe we should change things. Maybe Levy isn't a great owner, who knows what he promised behind the scenes and didn't deliver but regardless that team should beat Southampton and they were 3-1 up and threw it away. The result comes down to Conte and the players, seemed random to just start bringing up things we already know about Spurs in a general sense. He's a passionate guy with no filter and the game needs more of that but I'm just not sure what his point was here. If a) he is digging out Levy and the board, go the full whack, tell us why? What has Levy done wrong? If he lied and said he'd give him more money then say that cos if not, Conte knew the situation and is taking 13m a year to manage the club based on those resources b) he's calling out the players then sadly it comes down to him at the end of the day.
As an NUFC fan it reminds me a little bit of Rafa, I loved him but he would use pressers to moan a lot and take subliminal digs. I disliked Ashley so I didn't mind it too much but he would remain dignified and professional, not throwing players under the bus. Conte has surely lost the players and the owner here, not sure how he can stay on.

As a spurs fan feel like all these “winner” managers just give up on us after signing a short deal, failing and then just leaving, restarting the cycle again

Glad to see there’s a consensus among the comments that while Conte is mostly correct about the state of modern football, Tottenham’s owners, and accountability of players, he only has himself to blame for the rancid football.

It's very simple: If he's lost the dressing room then he has to go in the next few days. Ryan Mason will have a better chance, no matter how much worse of a manager he may be, so long as he has players. However, if there's a chance conte hasnt lost the players then it would be preferable to stick it with a world class manager who should have the ability to compete for fourth.

    Where's the fallout video?
Good video, agree he needs to go & Poch is the obvious candidate to replace him. He just seems like a good fit for the club. Also given Spurs' crisis it's all the more reason for Kane & Son to move in the summer.

This was the same atmosphere that was rampant under José so Spurs really need to stay away from pragmatic managers. Unpopular opinion but Southgate's personality would be perfect for a team like Spurs because he's a great leader and positive. Son seems like a shadow of himself under Conte this season. The tactics aren't working for the attacking quality that they do have.

Tottenham fan here - He needs to go but it will likely be best to wait until his contract runs out, ONLY bc we know Conte always bakes in a clause in his contracts that if he's sacked the club needs to pay an extortionist amount of money to him (see the Chelsea sacking debacle). And no truly good manager will want to come in and finish the last 10 games to have it on them if we don't make 4th. There really isn't a huge benefit to sacking him. The squad already disregard him entirely, just look at how much better they played when Conte wasn't in the dugout. Let the little shit ride out his contract and have a more stable environment in which to bring in a better manager in the summer

Partly due to frailty in other teams, he pulled them up to 4th at the end last season, and the team have been up there pretty much since then. He can see that that's starting to fall apart and wants sacking while they're still 4th. (Also Spurs have finished in the top 4 most of the recent seasons, and Conte talks like they were a mid table club prior to his arrival).

I suppose you can say that Conte also wasn't very "professional" with that outburst.
But if I had to choose one mode of unprofessionalism over the other, it'd be the one where I passionately drop truth bombs - rather than lacking: the balls to engage in duels; enough focus to adequately control a ball (as a professional footballer) the determination to defend my goal & backing a struggling teammate, etc.
Anyway, winners prove their critics wrong, losers prove their critics' right.
I wonder what our mentality midgets will do? 🤔

Not signing a new contract doens't make his actions a contradiction. If he's laid all this out to the owners and players already, and enough time has passed with no progress or trust in his philosophy, what does Conte do? I wouldn't sign a new deal myself until i see something that shows potential for change. If Conte signs a new deal and nothing changes, who's the fool in this situation? Conte is, and he's no fool.

Tottenham need someone raising the expectations, Conte's that. Levy brought Conte in to win things, as that's missing from his tenure as owner. The players shouldn't be able to be okay with mediocrity, and average performances. The only thing missing is his contract. If he had a longer contract, players would also be more committed and perform better I think. But, as Tottenham do you commit to him, with his 15-20m per year salary. I think it's the only way to keep Kane for an extra year or new deal. The players they are bringing in are getting really good. Porro this January. One more top CB like a Kim-Min-Jae, and a fresh goalie, maybe a creative midfielder, and this team can challenge for the title honestly.

Tottenham already been through the youth-optimism cycle with Poch. This is the Winner Spurs need. Spurs can't win with mediocrity, they need to perform with pressure like he's saying. He's putting it on the players.

He’s a walking contradiction. Lot of what he said is probably accurate but it’s clearly just a move when you say it to the press but don’t say any of it to the players after the game. I can’t see how the players can play for him again but I expect he’ll be here until the end of the season. I personally wouldn’t have Poch back, I just don’t think we’ve really grown since he left and I’m not sure he has either and I just can’t see it being a success.
