  • Featured in the 1932 film "Crooner," this was one of the year's most popular song hits. Years later, the tune would become permanently associated with the band of Johnny Long, who recorded it for Decca Records in both 1940 and 1946.
Transfer and digital restoration by Bob Moke from the original 78rpm: Victor 24050 - In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town (Young-Little-Siras) by Ted Black & His Orchestra, vocal by Chick Bullock, recorded June 22, 1932

It's only a shanty in Old Shanty Town
The roof is so slanty it touches the ground.
    But my tumbled down shack
    By an old railroad track,
    Like a millionaire's mansion,
    Is calling me back.
I'd give up a palace if I were a king.
It's more than a palace, it's my everything.
    There's a queen waiting there
    With a silvery crown
In a shanty in Old Shanty Town.
I'm up in the world but I'd give the world
To be where I used to be.
c heavenly nest where I rest the best
Means more than the world to me.
So, give me that shanty in Old Shanty Town
The roof is so slanty it touches the ground.
    My tumbled down shack
    By an old railroad track,
    Like a millionaire's mansion,
    Is calling me back.
I'd give up a palace if I were a king.
It's more than a palace, it's my everything.
    There's a queen waiting there
    With a silvery crown
    In a shanty in Old...
    c shanty in Old...
c shanty in Old Shanty Town.

It is much better than Johnny Long's version which was the only one I knew until now.
