  • This is Long’s earlier and less frequently reissued version of “Shanty Town,” which he would record twice for the Decca label during the 1940s. It became his signature tune and reappeared in a new and somewhat brighter-sounding remake six years later (listen here: • 1946 HITS ARCHIVE: In ... ).
Transferred from the original 78rpm: Decca 3409 - In A Shanty In Old Shanty Town (Little-Siras-Young) by Johnny Long & his Orchestra, with vocal ensemble, recorded September 12, 1940
    Ref: fallout .

Definitely the best song on Appalachia radio because unlike how they play the other songs 18 freaking times this song hardly ever comes on so its always nice to hear it

Yeah I really wish they looked after the music playlist. If the game is supposed to be supported for years forward, then they should at least shake up the radio soundtrack a bit each year.

My dad and his brother used to sit down at the piano and sing this song together. It was a hit at all the family gatherings!! They added their own little last line...."without a shirt"....not sure where that came from. Dad lived to 100. Love him and miss him every single day. Thanks so much for posting!!!

There's a shanty in the town on a little plot of ground
With the green grass growing all around, all around
The roof's so worn, so badly torn
Til it tumbles to the ground
Just a tumbledown shack and it's built way back
About twenty-five feet from the railroad track
Lingers on my mind most all the time
Keeps calling me back to my little old shack
I'd be just as sassy as Haile Selassie
If I were a king it wouldn't mean a thing
Put my boots on tall, read the writing on the wall
And it wouldn't mean a thing, not a doggone thing
There's a queen waiting there in a rocking chair
Just blowing her top on (Gaither's?) beer
Looking all around and I'm trucking on down
'cause I'm glad to get back to my shanty town

I don't have the 45, but if it's on Decca with matrix 73341 it's Long's 1946 remake, which has been the commonly reissued version: ua-cam.com/video/-Nm6BbEFgkg/v-deo.html

Actually they don't. Please read the written description of this post, which is Long's first recording of the song. Secondhand Songs lists only his commonly-reissued and better-known 1946 remake (which is also posted here on the channel: ua-cam.com/video/-Nm6BbEFgkg/v-deo.html ).

The 1946 version is definitely better. The vocals aren't as clear in this version. The 1946 version is the one I grew up with. I was born in 1995. If you're wondering how I was introduced to this song, it was on a cassette tape that my grandparents had that was subsequently given to me. I think it was the same tape. Or it was a new tape of the same compilation.

The Ink Spots had broken up by the time they did it. A group by Charlie Fuque one of the OG members redid it for TV, which is what you hear. But I guess you're too far isolated to appreciate swing or orchestras, or anything apart from the original version you hear.
I get solace from knowing Fallouter's musical biases like the back of my hand, and knowing that eventually in a few years time you'll come around and realize that a vocal quartet accompanied by guitar & piano using the exact same formula for most songs until it becomes tired and directly leads to their collapse isn't God Tier by default.
