In addition to that, the reason why the film was black and white was due to the fact of the green screens. A lot of visual shots weren’t completed so most scenes will there with the bright green screen and set up lights reflecting on them. So it was easier on the eyes to watch the daily’s in BW.
Yes and no. I agree because that´s what Zack said himself. But this doesn´t mean that he saw a clip or a scene from that version. But the phrase: "I turned it in black and white in some sort of visual protest" makes you think otherwise. May be Snyder was talking about the time the Josstice League was released, and meant that he didn´t saw the movie (the whole movie?) when he was supposed to watch it, ie in the promotion of the movie. I think that he should have seen it, for a couple of reasons: 1. The pictues Snyder shared on Vero. I don´t think it is a coincidence that every picture he shared wasn´t in the Theatrical Cut. It´s like he has telling us, you haven´t seen this, or this... 2. When he said his movie wasn´t going to be cheesy, he said it thinking in the Josstice League. 3. That the Snyder Cut intentionally changed some scenes, in order to distantiate it from the Justice League 2017, like the color of Diana´s dress in the epilogue (when she enters Wayne´s Manor with Bruce and Alfred), that Superman does a superhero landing instead of landing on his feet when he visits Alfred. Or that Clark Kent in the final scene still has the Black and White suit, instead of the blue suit, makes me think Snyder saw the Theatrical Cut before the release of his Cut. Or maybe it was his team or producers that took that decision. PS Yes it is possible that WB/Whedon changed Dianas black dress to red. 4. The VFX team talked about how they worked on the Snyder Cut, to make it different from the Whedon Cut, all this involved Snyder, so he must have seen it, or at least parts of it in order to discuss the postproduction with the VFX team, among other changes he made to the movie. Like for example the blood, originally the Snyder Cut didn´t have blood, wasn´t R-rated, but after the Josstice League, someone thought of how to best separate Snyder´s version from the theatrical version. Along the way they decided that adding blood would make to movie R-rated and better differentiate both versions. These are just some examples that makes me personally think that Snyder at least KNOWS the theatrical cut, even if he hasn´t seen the (whole) movie.
I didn't know how much work went into this. I like the Justice is Gray version. It's not my personal preferred version but it's one I'll still watch every now and then. It looks gorgeous
Justice League Gray is absolutely gorgeous. The snow flakes at the beginning and during the football game pop more and well it gives this amazing movie a different look which I found exciting.
Agreed with you on how the monochrome version of this film gave a new experience to and as in Zack's words feel cathartic. One thing that is also worth noting is that when this film was in production back in 2016, Zack said that Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai was an influence for this film, so seeing it in black and white with that knowledge gave me a better appreciation for this version of the film as a whole.
I already loved the precise composition, mise en scene and camera movement, and the B+W amplified all of those to another level. So many moments were made even more impactful. What stood out the most were smaller moments, Aquaman walking along the pier in long shot, the kids playing football in the street, Bruce Wayne and Barry Allen driving off with the 'You Are not Alone' billboard, Victor watching Linda Reed finding the money in her account, Lois pulling the cape out of the box, - I could go on. For a director casually dismissed as shallow, flashy and bombastic, Snyder has made something crammed full of beautiful and yes, subtle ART. Suffice to say, a very special film has been made even more special.
At the risk of sounding highly pretentious, the Justice is Gray version is by far my favorite version of the movie. And you're right, it really makes you pay more attention to detail. It adds a layer of richness that the colored version (while it still looks fantastic) didn't quite have. It also looks clearer and higher quality. Although, if someone is watching the movie for the first time, I recommend watching the colored first. Because the first shot of the movie has kryptonite and a first time viewer might not realize they're looking at kryptonite with the Justice is Gray version. Same with the scene where Lois holds Superman's torn cape. But nonetheless, I agree with everything you said here. Great editing, by the way.
Yup, preferred version. Fav bw shots: All close up shots, Lois opening scene, steppenwolf, flash scenes, shots of apocalypse, so much cool unique stuff in here.
I've selected various screenshots from the B+W version and shown them to people, asking 'Is this from a European art film from the 1960's? Or from a 2010's mega-budget Hollywood comic book sci-fi action blockbuster?" A lot of people answer the former. The B+W version truly becomes a different film, an even better one.
@@naodamdetsyon6929 No, it’s because of the color scheme. If you show anybody a screenshot of Justice is Gray and ask them that question, they’ll automatically know that it’s a modern film because of the high quality and resolution. The only reason they’ll answer with the former choice is because of the color scheme being similar to art films from the 60’s.
Huh. You’ve convinced me. I don’t like black and white movies usually-I find it difficult to see what’s going on and it feels so much less realistic to me. At least, that’s how I’ve felt in the past. But when I do finally get to watch this (I don’t have HBO or 4 hours right now but in the summer I will definitely make the time for it) I will watch it in black and white. Because the clips you showed actually did look better to me.
George Miller didn't just turn down the saturation to make the Black & Chrome edition, he put a lot of work into because he always wanted to make a black and white Mad Max movie.
Thanks! I love b/w film noir movies. I'm going to watch this version tonight. After watching your video I thought to myself, Watchmen" and 300" sure would look beautiful in b/w, and then i realized, they're both Zack Snyder flix! Other modern b/w flicks i loved were Sin City" and Frank Millers The Spirit". Beautifully done!
Love your videos man. Earned a sub. What i appreciate about making a B&W version of the film, one good argue, is that it DOES look more like a comic book movie, by representing those gorgeous black and white panels we grew up reading. Can't wait to check it out.
B&W version felt more immersive, the only lacking part was distinguishing details in some, if not most action parts. Everything else is spot on. Still prefer Justice is Gray version though for the immersion into Zack's world as he wanted it. Just class.
Watching the Justice is grey edition feels like an old movie from pre 1960's especially being in 4:3 aspect ratio. Good version just the color is easier to watch for me.
This version of the movie make me notice the acting way more. So it makes all the drama way better, trust me on that, whoever reads this and thinking on rewatching it, do it, you will want to see it atleast one time if you are a fan.
I really wish that there was a version of ZSJL were there’s colour in some places and left black and white just imagine the scene where Batman is standing on the gargoyle with lightning in the background what if the lightning was red, paying homage to Batman the animated series things like that would look amazing
I honestly didn't think Zack Snyder could devise a way to make Justice League more of a slog, but here we are reviewing a black and white version of the film. Nothing wrong with black and white films, of course. I watch quite a few. But I'm not sure I see the point here. When I think of comic book superheroes, I don't think of them being drained of all color. Unless, of course, it's something a supervillain did to them.
Its not better for the significance of stuff for example like the black suit and the lanterns. But more personal as the way Zack Snyder watched it for years. Also it just looks nice. It’s better if you enjoy it and enjoy black and white but color better for the actual film’s storytelling overall. I love justice is grey a hair more because it feels like the straight up vero images come to life we saw for years. Also yeah it has more of the grounded look in a way for the vfx shots.
The black and white version I think suits Snyder's aesthetic. It actually makes the more arguably more gorgeous. Especially that shot of when we first see Steppenwolf after dropping from the Boomtube inside the Amazon vault. The brightness and contrast of that shot looks SO good!
I love Justice League so much, and I love watching it in black and white as well. Not only does it feel like I'm watching a classic film, and who doesn't love those? But I feel that the tonal effects of black and white give the film an added depth of noir ambiguity and dark atmosphere that I typically associate with DC
Recently went on a justice league binge,it's fascinating for me to see the different versions and what I like and dislike about the two versions and what's different, and instead of just watching the Snyder cut and then the theatrical cut I also went to the "justice is gray" version which made me go on an analyze fest of the two Snyder versions. For me I always found the lack of saturation to be a negative but the shading and shine to be so much better compared to the theatrical cut, and the black and white really emphasizes that part of the movie, also the screen format just works better with the black and white. Only negative is that if you were to just watch the "justice is gray" you would know it was a different suit based off the symbol but you wouldn't know the suit itself was black and white which would have you miss the "why" he changed suits, which tbf I feel people could miss the why on the colored version as well. Overall I feel I would return to the justice is gray version now given it is just works better for the format and emphasizes Snyder's shade and shining during this film.
I agree, when I watch Zack Snyder´s Justice League in colour I find it soo difficult to forget the Theatrical Cut of 2017, and am constantly comparing both versions in my head. I also thought I wouldn´t like the black and white version of the Snyder Cut -but I was wrong! It makes it easier to distantiate your thoughts from the "Wheddon Cut" and it also gives the movie a more serious and darker tone. And yes the CGI/VFX looks better in the black and white version. The funny thing is that I was trying to make my own version (fan cut) of Justice Leauge in black and white (based on the Justice League 2017), this was of course before Snyder announced the release of his version.
I totally understand his feelings on Justice is Gray. I enjoyed it too. Every time I watch The Crow, I always turn the color off. I know it’s not the same as color grading it for black and white but it’s the best way to watch it, in my opinion.
The only two things that you end up missing in this version is Green Lantern's green and to notice that Superman is wearing a different suit. Besides that, it is completely worth watching this version. It even fits so well with the 4:3 aspect ratio. Also, I find it very hypocritical that not many complaint about Mad Max and Logan having a cheap B&W version but since this is Snyder they called it pretentious.
I attempted once, well actually twice.. Made it half way through and was extreamly tired from watching the colored version the night before. Also it was morning, so I'm watching it again in Gray this time with the lights out.
The reason this Black & White version is better to other recent re-releases is that those other re-releases are generally for films that already made very strong use of color. Fury Road needs those intense oranges, it's part of the atmosphere of the film. Parasite makes extremely poignant and thematic use of green. loosing that is loosing part of the story. But looking at how Snyder used color in his last few films and...he's really not focused on color at all. Honestly I think the color version of JL looks pretty ugly, where the B&W cut is beautiful to look at. It makes the textures pop, I find myself more focused on the performances, it makes the film better
Yeah, my comment is late (sorry).:I just got HBO MAX for this week so I could watch DUNE the week it came out (movie theaters aren’t an option for me and I’ll be damned if I was going to miss seeing DUNE it’s opening week!)…anyway, my only option for Justice League on HBO is the B&W version so I’ve only ever seen the entirety of Snyder’s black & white film. I really liked it a lot. I’ve seen a fair few clips from the theatrical release and the coloured Snyder Cut though and I have to say the B&W wins hands down for me. In the B&W none of the CGI stood out as “bad”. It all kind of stayed in the background and I think the movie flowed very nicely. I got sucked into the story and didn’t feel my brain being overloaded with too many colors and effects and cinematography etc happening on the screen…if that makes sense?!? I’m really glad Snyder went through and regraded the entire film, frame by frame, so it was an actual black & white film (versus being just a colour film someone slapped a black & white filter on). I thought it was great 🤷
I love how the Snyder Cut (Specially Justice in Gray) is literally a square, unlike the other movies, this one is just a square of i would say 500x500, it looks better that way.
To be honest it did feel very comicbooky to me but in the way manga is black and white. If that makes sense. More like. Manga style. Obviously not Japanese but that style of drawings. I love manga for the black and white honestly. It’s so cool.
On a scale of 1 to 10 of color I can understand bring it down to 2 to make a point but to make it totally devoid of color is not necessary. I'm already getting annoyed watching it.
Newcomers should watch the colored version first. Afterwards, have fun with any other versions. It'd be silly if the characters were talking about "blue" and the viewer couldn't see it. The characters are seeing color so we should too.
Correction, Zack never saw the theatrical release because his wife and Nolan wouldn't allow him, they said it would break his heart.
@Micolash Even if it was a Marvel film it would've been trash.
In addition to that, the reason why the film was black and white was due to the fact of the green screens. A lot of visual shots weren’t completed so most scenes will there with the bright green screen and set up lights reflecting on them. So it was easier on the eyes to watch the daily’s in BW.

Great video
But he never saw Josstice League
Zack didn't turn the theatrical version of the film into Black and White. He turned his version. Zack NEVER watched 2017 JL
Zack Snyder is the greatest!

I really hate how the Snyder cut is in a 4X3 aspect ratio.
