Thanks for the video dude, in a time of panic after my headphones died and weren't sure what to get yet I saw these few headphones be highly rated on multiple sites. I can't thank you enough for describing everything as if you were just making this video for me, this was superb so thank you.
I have the closed pair BUT modded the proprietary socket. Took the side apart and removed the silver sleeve and the oem socket and put a normal male /female adapter in and glued it. This allows far better cables which will pull off as they are not locked saving the cable etc.
It'll not be very detailed and loud, and the bass will be average. Try it with your Mac. If you like the sound, great, and if you don't, then buy a fiio e10k USB amp/dac. It costs 100 bucks, and will greatly enhance the sound quality
One thing I forgot to talk about here is the built in mic quality on the cables that have them: They are sub-par, nothing special and not worth looking into too much, often times the who ever I am calling having a hard time hearing me
They should fit, however I was able to find a comfy high quality pair of third-party generic earpads off eBay for about $5-$8. Also is where I found a top pad replacement as all the padding I had was fully worn out.
I own the beige 598 and HD 569 (Same headphone as the 598 CS) and maybe my hearing sucks but I don't hear much of a difference from the two minus a little bit stronger bass on the closed backs.
I have the HD 598 SE, ordered a replacement cable online. The only cable I could find was for HD 598. I assumed would be the same cable to fit all but the cable that arrived doesn't fit the headphones. Where to get replacement cables
I've got the HD 599 (open back - kind of one step up from the older HD 598) and HD 598 Cs along with a pair of the 6ft version of the same replacement braided cables from Amazon (I totally agree that those cables are great). The 599 have nicer sound but when I need sound isolation (to tune out the rest of the household) or just want the super comfy padding, the 598 Cs are terrific. Those earpads are superb. The mic on the default 598 Cs cable is nothing special but it is adequate for my needs (Discord and such - it sounds clear but a little flat) and paired with a 3ft splitter cable (another Amazon cable), the length is sufficient (my PC sits on the floor, not my desk). My motherboard has an integrated DAC and built-in amplification so along with suitable software amplification, that probably helps the mic shine better than it did for you. I would suggest using EqualizerAPO and the Peace plug in if you are using them on a PC to tweak the output. I grabbed some suggested EQ settings from another UA-camr (metal571) who's really into headphone audio and holy cow, it totally smoothed out the harsher edges on the 598 Cs sound making them very neutral. I can crank up music very comfortably with them now. Great video, btw!
That's awesome, My cs has been collecting dust for a long while now, I will give that a try at some point with the EQ As for the HD599 I may just end up getting that as well, I feel like I have been do for an upgrade or side-grade for a while now Thanks for the feedback!
@@LifeKommando The EQ settings I lifted from metal571's review were: HD 598 Cs EQ: Preamp: -3 dB 30 Hz, Q 0.8, +2 dB 300 Hz, Q 1.41, +2.5 dB 1000 Hz, Q 1.41, -3 dB 3500 Hz, Q 3.0, -6 dB These are copy-pasted and he deserves all the credit. I punched in the numbers and it boosts the relatively weak low-mids and tones down the overly bright upper mids that can get a little grating. At first I thought it sounded muted and then I tried upping the volume. Uncomfortable without the EQ and very pleasing with. I don't know if he has a profile suggested for the open backed HD 598 models (he does for the HD 599) but he does have a video that goes in depth into using the EQ and the how to get a neutral sounding profile. The InnerFidelity website has tons of detailed frequency response graphs for many different models (including the 598 open back) so with a little math, you should be able to tweak them too. The UA-cam video called "Finding Flat: How to Interpret Headphone Measurements" from the AXPONA conference on UA-cam offers a much deeper dive by the InnerFidelity testing guy into the subject but it's pretty technical (and wonderfully geeky in an audio geek way). Anyway, sorry if I sound like I'm plugging other creators on your channel. They were just useful tools for me and I suspect that having them in my viewing history is what made your video show up as suggested viewing. I really appreciated your explanation of what the differences in all the open-back models was. That info isn't that clearly available since most reviews just discuss the stock HD 598 and the Cs model.
@@LifeKommando As for the 599, it's probably a modest upgrade from the 598 but I suspect it almost comes down to personal preference. The 599 is supposed to have noticeably good bass for an open-back but otherwise, they are close cousins. They get very good reviews generally. There's a SE version of the 599 if you want them in black instead of the default beige colour. Costs a little more but they look sharp. Of course, if you want to upgrade, the HD 600 or 650 are kind of a gold standard but they aren't the cheapest purchase.
@@paranoidrodent Nah man that's awesome, I love this kind of stuff and this is a community so sharing is caring haha I will have to find time to sit down and really dabble with it, really interested in seeing what I can pull out of my CS, I personally don't like closed back and the fact the audio sounds meh, had asking my self why i got it since it's been collecting dust for years now. @@LifeKommando Try the EQ setting and toss on some Tool or something else with a good mix of bass, mid and treble. They aren't open backs, no, but they might surprise you.
I've actually been looking for a comparison between the HD 569 and the HD 598 CS. The price of the CS is almost double but the specs and as far as I have found the drivers are the same between both models, leaving it a cosmetic choice for an extra110$. I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing...why sennheiser feels the HD 598 CS should be priced so high. I'm all for upgrading sound quality but from what people say they don't sound any different from the HD 569 and I need the isolation so can't go with an open back model.
Thanks a lot for the video, I am really considering the open back model as I am tired of my M50Xs. Can you please tell me the main differences between the SE & the SR model, other than the physical changes you mentioned? (SE = $280, SR = $171) Also, can you recommend some other dac/amp combos (Audioengine D1) if the E10K are out of stock or way too overpriced? Thanks for the feedback, never knew purchasing something can be this hard.
The SR has the new/improved headpad and deeper earpads, lower power required to run them which won't make that much of a difference, audio wise they both pretty much sound the exact same. Optoma NuForce might be my next choice for a dac, or a mayflower objective 2 Hope this helps :)
Life Kommando Thanks for such a prompt reply, So the SR is a improved version of the SE? Also, should I connect my external stereo speakers (Edifier Luna HD225) via RCA, Optical or 3.5mm?
Pretty much just improved in comfort, the only complaint I had was that I found the earpads to have a different feel to the original HD598s which I did not like much and personally would probably kept them if I had not already owned a pair of 598s, it could just need to be broken in before they start to feel natural :) which with my current headphone that happened long ago, you will appreciate the amazing amount of room the SRs provide your ears specially if you come from an M50X :) What ever your speakers support, mine support RCA and comes with an RCA to 3.5mm cable that I use, if you have optical then try that first if not then either RCA or 3.5mm are both fine
Life Kommando I just ordered the 598SRs, got a great deal on them. My question about the speakers were whether RCA is better than digital optical? My speakers has RCA, Optical as well as standard 3.5mm
Nice, optical is best since it does not pick up on any noise like wires do, if it's just a 2.0 / 2.1 setup then RCA/3.5mm will work just fine no need really for optical unless you have a larger set up like a 5.1 or if you are getting noise for some reason and it is because of the wire
What's up, my man? How good these are when we use with iPhones and/or iPADs? I have the IPP 10.5 and need to know if the volume can be compared to the EARPODS (or Airpods). Thanks
Thank you a lot for the video! It came out just in time :) I have been looking at these headphones for a while now. I want to get the HD 598 SR to use them for listening to music as well as gaming. I am also looking to get myself a DAC/AMP. Was thinking of getting the Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi HD. Would you personally suggest it, or do you think that I need something else to drive these headphones? Thank you!
Oh and before that I was thinking of getting the Cloud 2 headphones, but so many people are suggesting to get Sennheiser that I simply couldn't ignore them :)
I should make more videos about headphones, cloud 2s I have mixed feelings about them, good headset for the price, if you just want to game with a good mic, I just find the USB controller/dac to produce sharp audio that hurts my ears, so I got the fiio e10k dac then found out the long and hard way that combined 3.5mm cables with mics are very very prone to interference where you will end up with noise on either the mic or the earcups, which is when I got my HD598 and a modmic, then left the modmic for an AT2035 Creative one I cannot say much about it, even though it is cheaper I read it is prone to interference and its a bit too big and hard to position where you want it At least how I do it with my Fiio E10K is having it sit beside my keyboard on the left side where my headphone cable is, which there I can easily control the volume with my left hand quickly Hope this helps

Yes it'll deal just fine. Most people wouldn't tell the difference. Just plug em in with the short cable that comes with the headphones. I have an S9. Sounds great.
There's a 6ft and a 9ft version of those cables on Amazon too. I own two of the 6ft versions. Great cables. Seems to be a Chinese brand named New Fantasia. You can find them on Ebay too.
The cs would provide a better comparison to the m50's being that they would both be closed-back. The sr's are open back and allow sound leakage which isnt always great for gaming depending on your situation. If you're playing alone and don't mind any sound escaping or coming in, then open back all day no question. But if you are looking to isolate your personal sound closed back is the way to go. I am using jbl c100si and xiaomi in ear headphones pro hd whose impedance is 32 ohms fr music via headphone jack in g7. The audio quality I am getting is very bad even on turning on dac (I am connecting directly to headphone jack). My redmi note 3 sounds better with this earphones. Plz help me i buyed juz becoz all reviewers r saying it's audio quality is awesome. (lg g7 full volume 75 is equal to redmi note 3 40% volume. This is wat iam getting )
You spent more time on the DAC and cable...
Headphone is tank (0_0) ?! How?! Armored or Heavy?!
Doesn't break easily, they're all made from plastic which is really light
FYI - HD598SEs are going for $500-$600 nowadays online....where you can even find them. I bought them on Amazon new for $129.99 years ago. I've never been happier with a purchase before....especially after seeing they are highly sought after, and more than tripled in price.
is this better than ath-m50x
Yes, they are
More comfortable
M50x are the most overrated headphones ever. Shitty headphones.
it's a very helpful video, but you're talking too fast. i barely can understand anything when video in normal speed. Well.. English is not my native language but i hope it can taken into consideration.
Thank you for the video anyway, i really need info abou these headphones.
I would change the playback speed
💗💗💗👍
I AM WATCHING THIS WITH 598 cs LOL
Your original hd598 is a fake one. The proof is the headband is smaller and less padding than the true one. So you got scammed
I can tell you this is a real one, quality is all up to par, got all the packaging and cables, the headband has been worn out over the years to the point where it has cracked in the middle
If it was a fake it would have broken down to pieces 3 years ago
Life Kommando It's strange on how you're hd598 has a small padded headband. Cause it should have the same padding as the se. But if it works as the same as a hd598 it works
hey, i noticed the same!! O_O the padding looks really tiny on his headphones :o I compared it with the ones Linus Tech Tips has
Oh no, i think it was the angle of the shot. I see the padding normal now
Cloudy Clips it's definitely not fake you have mistaken, the fake one can be easily identifiable.
velvet much
You talk way too fast.
dude slow down lol. You talk to fast
