I haven't watched the entire video yet so I don't know if you already covered it but I was wondering which one of these headphones have the largest sound stage for positional audio in games like say Counter Strike or Battlegrounds. I would like them to also have very clear natural sounding audio but from what i've seen so far that shouldn't be to difficult with most Sennheiser Headphones. My budget with the amp included can go up to just below 1500 dollars. Besides being natural sounding, having the ability to customize it to be less natural sounding but better for the specified purpose, music for example, would also be a great addition.

This is the BEST Sennheiser headphones comparison video I can find on the Internet. Thank you so much for this, it certainly helped me in making my decision to buy the Hd600! Big thumbs up!
I agree fully. I just bought HD600 and it was the only model they didn't have in the shop to demo!? But I didn't kick myself in the ass when I got home. And yes, If I had nearly 1000€... those HD 800's... *drooling sounds*

this is THE best headphone review I have ever seen! I even bought the HD 598 because of this video and your individual review, and I thank you very much for that! I am very impressed with the 598s!
I really like the straightforward nature of this video. No camera rolls, ridiculous pans, blurs, lighting, etc. Just you sitting there going through headphones and providing honest feedback on what people care about.
This is my first comment on UA-cam. I just wanted to say this is a great, great video and review. I laughed at the beginning when you compared the comfort, and I really enjoyed hearing you spill the beans on the differences and the benefits of each headphone. I was waffling on 558 and 598, and now I'm certain to get the 598. Thanks for all the work.
I bought HD 600 based on this review. Thanks man! My HD 595 (120ohm) got too loose, the crappy plastic got broken and the headband padding is pretty much shot after years of use. So I needed a new set. I compared the two and they are not that apart from each other, but it's almost like comparing 720p vs 1080p soundwise. The fit thou... HD600 wins with a mile. The sound in HD 600 has more resolution, articulation and natural warmth. Bass has much more detail and the mid-to-upper range is really spot on and not vague in soundspace like on HD595. My applications range from home recording to gaming and these HD 600's just blew me away in all situations.
I own HD598cs, HD650, HD700. In the beginning, the 700's highs were a bit much for me, but after hours of listen, i got used to it and it's definitely my favorite by a mile.
I'm surprised there aren't more comparisons like these. There are so many products that are so similar to each other yet you don't really know the key differences in between them. This review/comparison is how it's done.
matafaka, its not bad but its the best with classical music, movies, anime, games are not bad either, terrible with anything modern, the bass sounds like it stops at 50 or 60hz, shitty bass for electronic music, but for metal, rock, classical its amazing. Comfort isnt that good as the headband has the air system which means that through time the headband lets gets compressed to the point they dont inflate with air that much any longer and they are comfortable after about 2 years.
hd 800, but in general sennheiser I wouldn't say are good for competetive gaming, not enough imaging and they don't have sub bass so they dont sound fun with explosions. They are good for music (except electronic and rap), movies, anime and so on. Cloud 2 should be good at representing footsteps well though, mmm maybe try beyerdynamics or if a refund is possible for hd 650, hd 598 is very enjoyable for music, movies and anime though, rock, metal, classical and instrumental is especially great on them.
"Really really comfortable... very easy to wear." So much Pokemon reference I cannot even. Also, thinking about a pair of 518s after watching your reviews :)
Man, this was an excellent preview. Completely helped me make a purchasing decision. Definately no verbal dunnage here. Nothing but straight data. Thank you.
Excellent review! I just got the HD598's and absolutely love them. I power them with my Soundblaster E-5. I compared them without the dac/amp and it is a huge difference. Lower frequencies were thin without amplification. These headphones trick me into thinking the sounds are coming from around the room "soundstage" and not from a speaker attached to my head. Side note: my IE Hifiman Re-600's are amazing at soundstage as well.
Fantastic comparison. I spent hours on the forums and learned less than I did in this 21 minute video. I wish more folks would do reviews like this. Keep up the good work, Lance.
I own the HD800 and I have to say, they sound pretty great even with a relatively cheap mobile amp/dac like my Oppo HA-2. Just with the HD800 headphones alone the sound quality you hear will simply jump to another level compared to $300-600 HPs. They do benefit greatly from a dedicated amp and dac, but they will sound wonderful through anything worthwhile that can drive them to 75%. Still, I highly recommend not putting out 1k for HPs unless you're willing to dish out enough to give them at least 90-95% of what they deserve... Also its worthy to mention that although the HD600s and beyond need an amp, the HD800s dont only need one but are extremely picky in what amps work and what dont edit: I use them with an HDVA600 and DacMagic Plus playing hifi Tidal through an HP Pavillion PC. Works for me.
I'm sold, Sennheiser HD598 I have been looking at tons of reviews, my very first audiophile headphone ( I have Sony pulse Elites but I don't think of them as audiophile grade because to get the best sound they need to be activated and the batter life is only 5 hours) Great review like always, subscribing to you because I love your reviews!
I just spent the last 5 days researching headphones trying to decide what to buy next. After wasting money looking for something that I like. Sennheiser seemed to call out to my from my research but after your review I'm so informed and impressed with your presentation so much that after 5 days of watching you tube videos I finally commented on yours. I'm a bass person so I want the 650 but because of budget and the help of your review I'll go with the 598. Thanks again.
This is a fantastic review ....... I couldn't have done it any better. It's funny I found this after purchasing my HD-598's. But it seems we came to the same conclusions in that my favorites are the 598 and what I may eventually pick up and initially fell in love with ....... the HD-700's
Sat down 3 hours ago to buy a pair of headphones on amazon, came across your channel and you have opened a whole new realm for me . Time to make coffee and watch many more hours . I shall subscribe good sir
your reviews are the best i have found by a mile on these headphones. I went with the 518 at first and then canceled the order and bought the 598 based on your videos, its on its way! (i am damn excited lol)
Why do you not have more views? Other than the fact that most people are satisfied with Apple Ear-buds. Great detail on your reviews. This helped me make my decision as to what to get. Also, I know your videos are more on individual product reviews, but if you could do a video separately describing what and amp and dac is in detail, that would be amazing. When it comes to learning about the Audiophile world for the first time there really isn't a lot of straight forward information out there from people who know what they are truly talking about it seems.
Amazing comparison review! Coming from a Hifiman HE-400, I really wanted a more comfortable headphone. Sound wise, I am completely satisfied with the 400's, but the comfort was a glaring issue for me. Your reviews really helped me to make a selection. I've recently ordered the HD 700's and I'm excited to listen to them. Thank you!
The frequency response mentioned at 0:50 seconds under the 600 product specify 12-39Hz. While I would assume everyone who watches your channel should understand it is in kilohertz and also probably did not even notice, I just wanted you to be aware.
Glad to hear that, and thanks for the compliment! Please check out our latest review of the FiiO X5 2nd Gen as well, thanks! ua-cam.com/video/yudMk8pwPzE/v-deo.html

Everybody said that the HD600 is the best value (between 600/650) so i bought the HD600 and i didn't regret it. I was thinking that i would find them boring because of their natural sound, but instead i loved them! I'm still planning on getting an amp (O2/Odac) but even straight out of my stereo output they sound amazing. (any other amp/dac suggestions
Hi, what do you think about Sennheiser HD598SR in 2018? I mean I just got them after I've seen this review and I want to know if are still a great choise after all these years . thankss
I've been using my HD598 with an Audioquest DragonFly for over 10 years now. The pads are getting worn out and it seems you can't get them replaced anymore, so I was considering going for an upgrade with AMP. After watching this I'm not sure if it would be an actual upgrade to get a different pair of headphones haha I think I should find a shop where I can compare the HD650 and HD800S, because I'm so curious how different the sound is at almost 3 times the price tag.
Great review!!! Very detailed and informative...What would you recommend for a better soundstage and smooth easy listening I just like my music to be even all around and mellow? Not to high not to low. I just bought the 598 per your recommendation and looking for a second set as well. The 800 are out of the question but the 600, 650 and 700 are all in the running. I know you said don't pay attention to the number, but I do like how you described the 700 how detailed and refined it is. Whereas the 650 has more a darker more bass sound. I listen to all types of music from hip-hop, r&b, jazz, pop, rock, a little bit of edm, and some classical and country. Any thoughts on what my second set should be?
Hi Lance, thank you for a wonderfully helpful comparison.Your video has helped convinced me on going for the HD 700 ... (upgrading from the old HD 595). Just curious, do you know why the HD 700 drop to 150 ohm?
In your opinion, which has the best sound, bose soundtrue around ear, ath m50x or sennheiser HD 598? And for casual use, on PC and smartphone, you indicate which of the three?
Hey Lance do you think you can make a video explaining what a headphone amp/DAC does, and what is the benefit of having one. I'm new to this and I'm looking for a good pair of headphones and I have seen people talk about amps but don't really know what they do. Also what is the benefit of having a portable amp for your ipod/smartphone? Sorry for asking so many questions.
Hey! Thanks for the video... Whats your opinion on on the HD 429 S ???? Do you recommend them? I could get one of the 518, 558 o 559, but I dont like their sound leakage everybody is talking about ... Thank youuuu!
Im glad to watch this review and comparison after bought a HD589 just today, and I have a question, I was thinking to buy a portable amplifier to use with iphone, what kind do you recommend it to use with HD589? Than you and congrats
Question brother. I have been limited to my Corsair wireless headphones recently and want to make the Seinheiser leap. HD650 or HD700. I watch a lot of TV on my gaming rig and listen to my music via iTunes with my tracks imported with Apple Lossless. I will be using a Soundblaster ZXR soundcard which will act as an amp/DAC. What do you think?
You sound like you know what you're talking about when it comes to these cans. I have the hd650s. I've been pairing them with a Graham Slee Novo amp for a few years now. What is a perfect amp, in your opinion, for these headphones?
I mostly listen to drum & bass, techno (carl cox, green velvet, dj dan), classic rock, and heavy metal through my phone on pandora, soundcloud, Spotify, UA-cam and all fun stuff. Are the 598s the best headphone for me?
Could you help me choose a pair of headphones? I've watched your individual reviews on both the HD 558 and HD 598 and wondered if it would be worth spending the extra £30 to get the 598's. I listen to a lot of different music but mainly genres such as heavy metal, rock, hardstyle dance, as well as drum and bass. I would also use them for gaming and watching movies. They would be used with my iphone or computer a lot and possibly used when I'm outside too. With all that being said would you recommend either of these headphones (if so which model?) or would you recommend something like the ATH M50X?
Great review Lance, really emphasized the key elements in every model. One thing i was hoping for is if you could elaborate on the HD 700's just a little more in terms of Gaming(Arma lll , Battle Field 4...etc) and Music(Drum'N'Bass all the way back to classic's such as Frank Sinatra). Once again, really impressed with your reviews on the Sennheiser line up.
Hey lance great review as always. Was wondering if you have any experience with Bottlehead products, in particular the crack amp. As I am considering hooking it up with a pair of Hd 600s or 650s. However i did some reading and found that the 700 and even the 800s can potentially mesh well with the crack. What do you think?
Hey Lance, do you believe the 598 is "significantly" better than the 558? The 558 is 60 bucks cheaper, so I'm wondering if the price difference is justified.
First I would like to say great this is a great channel it's awesome how you describe, compare everything and give great advice; it really puts the audio world in perspective. Thanks for your video. Would you mind doing a review of the HiFiMan series of headphones particularly about the HE-400's, thanks.
Great review on each product. I've owned the HD600, HD650, and HD800 (twice). I always wanted to audition the HD700 but I was a concerned about the piercing high that hits a frequency which I can't remember that can actually damage your ears (not sure if that is true). I sold my HD800 and then repurchased because I missed the soundstage but then realized why I sold it to begin with. The highs are way to painful to my ears. I have the Bryston Bha-1 & Schiit Mjolnir & O2 and all of them make the HD800 too bright and lean. I hear tube amps are great which I used to have the Schiit Lyr which sounded better with the HD800. Anyways, I sold the HD600 while back and repurchased it again to try with my new amps/dacs. So far I love my Audeze LCD-3 the best. Darker warmer sound but still revealing and very detailed. Just a tad bit less detailed and smaller sound stage then the HD800 but better bass and fuller sound.
Damn. I love your videos and style. All the questions I asked on other videos have gone unanswered for a few months to a couple years. And you answered almost all of them in one go. haha. So if I want decent sound with slightly better bass (I'm not obsessed with bass, it doesn't have to be the best feature, but I'd like the bass to be heard) I should either get the 518, 598 or 650? I'd just be using an iPod Touch. Is the 598 the most balanced between the 518 and 650? What if I bought a portable amp for the 650 ,would that help out a bit? Or would the portable amp even help the 598's bass too? For gaming. I'll be building a new PC over the summer and I'll be using an Asus ROG Maximus VIII Impact Z170 mobo and I'm pretty sure it supports up to 600 ohms. Would the 700 be a great spot for accurate sound tracking and position recognition? I'll be playing almost exclusively FPS's that I really want to be able to hear WHERE and how far the enemy may be. Would the 700 with an SupremeFX Impact III on board sound be enough? Or should I ditch my mini ITX build for a maybe a mini ATX so I can attach a beefier amp / soundcard to properly power the 700?
Fantastic group review Lance, best one yet. Although i`d love the 650`s or 700`s I think the 598`s would be the best choice for me. I have a Yamaha amp etc but like the idea of a pair of headphones I can use across a range of devices. I have the RS170`s at the moment and love the freedom they give, being able to wonder into the kitchen and make a drink with out having to stop what i`m listening to. I know it`s different technologies but how do the 170`s and 598`s compare soundwise?
This is the best Sennheiser model number run downs I've ever heard. Nicely done
Really appreciate the great feedback and comment, thanks so much!! :D

yeah it's actually 51000 Hz or 51Khz according to sennheiser's website. en-au.sennheiser.com/dynamic-headphones-high-end-around-ear-hd-800
Rattacko 44khz

Hi, what do you think about Sennheiser HD598SR in 2018? I mean I just got them after I've seen this review and I want to know if are still a great choise after all these years . thankss
I've been using my HD598 with an Audioquest DragonFly for over 10 years now. The pads are getting worn out and it seems you can't get them replaced anymore, so I was considering going for an upgrade with AMP. After watching this I'm not sure if it would be an actual upgrade to get a different pair of headphones haha
I think I should find a shop where I can compare the HD650 and HD800S, because I'm so curious how different the sound is at almost 3 times the price tag.
Been watching headphone reviews all day and yours was most helpful.
Fantastic, detailed review. Just based on reading reviews, the HD 700s were my first choice.
Can you comment on the build quality especially for rough use?
I like electronic music (trance with bass) also listen to some classical. The 650s are the best right?
Lance what is your opinion on the HD 439's? I've seen other reviews but I like your reviews.
which one of the Sennheiser headphones would be good for jazz and blues music, 518,598,558 thanks Mike
Any thoughts on what my second set should be?
does 598 come with mic ? which cable can be used for it?
So I have that dilemma.. Should I go for the 518 for gaming and music or save up a little bit for the 558?
Lance,
Great review! I am thinking of either getting the 558, or the 598s. Is the extra money really worth it??
Thanks.
Agree with johnathan best reviewer ive seen on heaphones. Extremely clear and gives a lot of useful detail.
hey bro, what type of amp is perfect for the HD800 & where can i buy it ?
Excellent reference! Now what are you going to do with all those headphones?
You are a great reviewer of headphones You can really detail the differences!
Hi Lance, thank you for a wonderfully helpful comparison.Your video has helped convinced me on going for the HD 700 ... (upgrading from the old HD 595). Just curious, do you know why the HD 700 drop to 150 ohm?
I am wondering whether to get the HD 558 or the HD 201... It's so hard to choose...
Great video! I use HD558, before I warmed them, I have been thinking about changing them to 598, but now- the headphones are ok)
which one would you recommend for more of a classic rock kind of flow I am between 600, 650,700
Question brother.
Hello, which open back headphone, any brand, would you recommend for watching movies on a laptop, no amplifiers or anything just the laptop. thanks
How does the HD-598 and HD-800 compare to the Grado RS- 1i and PS-1000.
So 598's or HD600's? Being used from a Fiio E17 or iBasso DX90?
I am a beginner audiophile, right now I have Grado Labs Sr80i and I am caught between the hd 518 or the hd 558. What do you recommend?
Hey lance great review as always.
Was wondering if you have any experience with Bottlehead products, in particular the crack amp. As I am considering hooking it up with a pair of Hd 600s or 650s. However i did some reading and found that the 700 and even the 800s can potentially mesh well with the crack. What do you think?
are the 558's good for watching anime and movies?
Hey Lance, do you believe the 598 is "significantly" better than the 558? The 558 is 60 bucks cheaper, so I'm wondering if the price difference is justified.
This helped me a lot. Thanks for the thorough comparison.
Im looking to but some openbacked headphones. Using for gaming and Movies. And maybe some music. Should i get the hd558 or 598?
Can i use 518,558 and 598 for my smartphone or mp3 player?
Had the HD 555 for ten years. Best thing I ever bought. My guess is that it's pretty much identical to the 558
+TheSwampHumanoid Pretty much ye.
Is it HD700 for gaming good?
Have you ever get a chance to review Hifiman headphones. I was hoping you could review them.
I'm thinking of getting the hd 518, would they be a good upgrade from the hd202? thanks
