Phase Off: Block vs Script MXR Phase 100

- Upon researching the differences between the block- and script-logo MXR Phase 100, I realized that unlike its more popular and well-known sibling, the Phase 90, there were no video comparisons of the different versions of the Phase 100. Based on what I learned (and heard) regarding the differences between the script and block Phase 90s, I opted for the script Phase 100 and couldn't be happier. Thanks to my friend Alex Chod of The Vorticists (who loaned me his block logo-era Phase 100 after borrowing my script logo-era Phase 100 to record with), I was able to make this video comparing the two. I used a 1965 Gibson ES-330 through a 1971 Fender Princeton with a 12" AlNiCo Oxford speaker. I put new Energizer batteries in each pedal before recording this demo. Believe it or not, this was recorded and filmed with an iPhone 4S (no additional processing whatsoever). I hope this helps you in your decision whether to buy a block-logo Phase 100 or a script-logo.
thanks man...nice vid helped me a lot,but still not sure which one i want!!..
had one of these in the late 70's and just started looking at them again, playing more now ...and man can't believe what they are getting for the old ones...wish i didn't lose it!! also had the 90..great fun pedals back then..oh and great picture!!
Not sure about this..... The only reason I wonder is because each of these do not have true bypass switches and I think there may have been some tone coloring since they were hooked together and not separately looped. That said - I've had both script and block. I am presently using the block. Thanks for taking the time to post!
The Script seems to have a more subtle, thinner sound, the Block seems to be more full on and bassy. I think both would have their uses and it's matter of preference.
Nice! I just purchased a Script Phase 100 (yet to be delivered), but I was curious to know what the "differences" would be.
The script definitely has a lot more top-end clarity, where as the block has a lot more mid-range boost. I do like the warmth of the block, but I'm weary of losing too much top-end effect. You can always pre-boost the mid-range on a script unit to gain some "warmth" if needed. :)
block is richer, as the script is a thinner higher tone, I LIKE THE BLOCK
Script is nicer; keeps the top end, which you can roll off in other ways, if you want to. Ditto, if you want to boost the mids, like the block, does a bit
Are these phasers yellow or orange. Were the Phase 100s orange in the70s??
I wish they would recreate the script phase 100 in a modern true bypass pedal, but obviously they just don't sell enough as everyone seems to sleep on the best phaser of the mxr lineup. Nice demo.
Thanks for this review! I personally prefer the less dramatic effect of the script. Cheers!
I prefer block versions on bass because they're more pronounced in the band mix.
Please don't forget Tony used a Boss chorus together with the phaser (at least on his Hammonmd T-102 organ (and later with the Prophet 10 organ patch, the repmlacement for the Hammond) so the two need to sound good together. He used another MXR Phaser (which model?) with his RMI piano sometimes when in sustain "organ mode" up until 1977 (think the opening ot "In The Cage".
This is spot on!
If i'm not mistaken Tony always stayed with Phase 100's. And the organ was a mix of this pedal and a Boss CE1.
The RMI was used with Phase 100 aswell.
very cool! and disappointing that i can't afford a script version haha
I think the script signal is probably being degraded since it is passing through the block signal chain. Neither of these panels have a true bypass switch
Killer demo, the block had a little more MOJO for me. Also, seemed a bit noisier?
The tall narrow sounds good on both pedals but everything else the script is much more smoother and less pitch variation detuning
Neither has the red LED light
They are old and the circuit values drift over time, plus you can adjust the internal trim pot to taste.
Put one through a polymoog 280a on preset number 1, vox humana, turn up the rate full and hey, you have the beginning of "cars" by gary numan
That song is the be all, end all of Phase 100 use. It's on pretty much everything.
The blocker is the better one at slower speeds
the block sounds crunchier in tone! the script is cleaner sounding.!
Maybe they could put a script button
just like the phase 90 block script. the feedback resistor added to the block makes the effect more pronounced. i prefer the script for this as well. the block logos are decent and have applications but i prefer script.
Now, if you play keys and are looking to get that Genesis sound, especially the sounds off "A Trick of the Tail," 100 all the way.
This is something almost everyone kind if misses and i don't know why. the Phase 100. Tony's organ sound from Wind and Wuthering onwards is so characteristic because of the Phase 100. I became obsessed with the pedal myself, bought a newer one early this year, and just today i got an old script one. I'm in love
It seems like the block lacks in the high frequencies and the script in the low frequencies. Both there is not much difference.
The vintage script sounds a little better,...G.C. has them for three ties the price,........there is a huge difference between the block phase 90 and the hand wired phase 90,....but the hand wired one is only like $50 more
I have owned both. I think the script sounds a little better. Pepsi vs Coke. The only difference is the script is you can pretty much put it anyplace in the chain and it sounds the same. The Block has a specific spot. However, that spot will sound like a classic vibe. It's amazing. To put it this way......When the lights are out it all feels and sounds the same so why pay more?
I actually prefer the block logo's phasing sound better on phase 100
I cant hear any difference at all, the reissue dunlop does sound different though
Script always sounds night and day better to me, the script has the sound of real classic records, the block sounds chunky and less transparent
Damn you! You ruined Block logo for me XD
That's an odd comparison. The output of the script is interfering with the block. Be better to isolate both.
Hey the circuit boards in both these are identical, hence they sound the same
Right...board may be the same, but, this video is pretty irrefutable that at similar settings there's a huge difference in tone. What would you attribute that too?
Script is the best.
Usually, people don't turn the speed all the way up like that. Have you noticed they both sound like shit in that setting? It's a waste of time demoing that. Also, don't just guess on what's the difference in the circuit board. Do some research. Or, leave that to someone who actually knows what the fuck they're talking about.
What's obvious is that people need to tune their guitars before making demo videos. Hard to listen for differences when you are cringing from out of tune playing. Arghhh its all over you tube in these demos.
