Thousand bucks for the Traveling Wilburys guitar is hilarious. I saw one on reverb, not in such great shape, but only $150
The one he is demoing has real autographs on it. Only reason why it’s so expensive. Otherwise a bang average guitar.
I’d pay a G for a Wilburys guitar.
@@edgargranados8524 All the signatures combined on that are not worth $1,000 maybe when you add in the guitar.
@@popsfereal if they were real those signatures would be worth $10,000… they’re not real though, all of them had the printed on signatures
Dude, that Tiesco is too awesome! The 3rd position for sure is where the home, tone wise.
Ah the 60's... Back when guitar companies were making up new stuff, rather than following the same templates. Those were some cool guitars,
You should look up companies like Reverend guitars. There's tons of companies making brand new types of electric guitars. New shapes, new types of pickups, new features.
If you look only at big companies like fender and Gibson and ibanez, and then complain that they're only making the same stuff as always, then that's kinda on you. You've gotta look outside of the big companies, look at small independent guitar companies. The crazy whacky guitars like the ones in this video from the 60s were all from small independent guitar companies back then too. Not from companies like Fender and Gibson and ibanez. So really it's the same right now as it's always been
Hey Ryan! Would you be able to do a video going over your surfy riffs? I wouldn't know what songs to look up to find them and would a short sort of tutorial video going over your top/favourites riffs 😁
He plays lot of basic top hits. Check Shadows or Ventures Apache, Penetration by Pyramids, Walk dont run Ventures, Pipeline Chantays, Wipeout Surfaris.
Here's three i picked up from Ryan over the years!:
Pipeline - The chantays
Walk don't run - The Ventures
Baja - The Astronauts
But yeah a full on "Ryan teaching us normie guitarist how to surf on a guitar" video would be totally radical dude :) *shaka sign*
I've only seen pictures of that teisco on ebay and love that design. What a crazy switching system.
Ryan, try the Eastwood reissue of the Spectrum 5. It's very well built and somewhat more affordable. $1400 retail.
These Teisco Spectrum guitars are very rare. Nice to see you demo one in a video. It was a pleasure to watch this video Ryan.
Those Teisco del ray Spectrum guitars are getting pretty rare, they are also stereo, where the split pickups could be routed bass side to one amp, and the treble side to another.
That's pretty slick
I post videos of the guitar in stereo if you wanna hear.
Ryan, I actually bought this exact guitar (on my wedding anniversary, no less) in August 2021. Had wanting one for years but had to try one in person because of the cost...I'm the opposite of rich, but had to buy it the moment I saw it. I'm a BIG fan of the channel, so I am glad to see you tried it as well and liked it as much as I do! I play it daily and by some luck ended up finding replacements for the missing trem cover and pickguard logos. Frets are quite low, but holding off on a refret for now as I did get used to it. The switches also took a good cleaning to get to hold in place.
The switching is definitely odd, and I'm not sure if the switching on this guitar is the same across all Spectrum 5's. I really only tested it once since I bought it, as I only use the yellow, green, and green+blue positions. But from what I tried:
-Red switch cuts the low strings or high strings only (in Mono mode) depending on which input you use. I realize I haven't tried that position while using it in stereo...
-Orange is indeed out-of-phase; depending on position though it may not do anything (i.e. yellow and orange, since it is only one pickup)
-Yellow switch is the bridge only; interestingly if you select no switches you actually get this same pickup selection.
-Green is neck+bridge
-Blue appears to be all three pickups and quite dark, but great for a heavy distortion. (Blue+Green appears to be neck+middle, which is very useful).
(P.S. Speaking of Baldwin, I play it with a Baldwin Professional Deluxe much of the time. They made those amps in my home of Fayetteville, AR. A decent solid state amp, but the colored EQ switches are what really make for a great aesthetic pair with the Spectrum 5. Check them out online!)
Woah those Baldwin Professional Deluxe amps look absolutely gorgeous. I've never seen an amp that looks even remotely like that one. It's completely unique, there's literally nothing like it. I hope it sounds as good as it looks
@@duffman18 they are underrated amps (especially if you are an acoustic or keyboard player). Great tremolo; the reverb is very niche (fairly metallic and very wet). The decay is super long, so great for surf and not much else...but I love playing surf so it works for me!
The Supersound EQ makes it fairly versatile for matching with various guitars - took some dialing in but found a great clear, deep, and "round" clean with the Spectrum. A WGS G12C is a great speaker match, after trying a few options.
It's an early solid state amp so it defintely has limitations, but is miles above some of the garbage early solid state amps that soured so many - much closer to Kustom than, say, Kay, Teisco, etc. etc.. The cleanly laid-out handwired internals put the early PCB Fender solid states to shame.
“I’m playing sloppy all of a sudden…”. All of a sudden, Ryan?
lol
Did you look to see if the Wilbury's guitar has the signatures of the band? Harrison, Petty, Orbison, Lynne? 🤔
Those were a limited run and did not have signatures. I wanted one very early on when I first started learning guitar 30 yrs ago. I still want one just for kicks.
That Teisco Pickup design is incredible, noiseless split single coils. G&L uses this PUP design in their new Fullerton Deluxe models.
Ryan: Re the Teisco: (one of my faves, I make a version called “Mako”) Not sure if the switching is the same as on the Kawai MIJ reissue: if so, here it is:
Green = (Center/Pair)
Orange = (Rear / Pair)
Yellow = (Phase)
Red = (Phase)
Blue = (Front/Pair)
Without hearing that Baldwin I know I love it
That Teisco is INCREDIBLE!
I would love to get my hands on an original vintage Teisco Spectrum 5 from the 60s but a reissue would suffice for now! Great video!
I love the old burns guitars, and that teisco model is probably my favorite of the stuff they made.
The Traveling Wilburys pretty much saved Gretch . And if it was good enough for George Harrison to use on the Traveling Wilburys album .
Nuff said .
What ! It's signed and there's only 2 Wilburys left alive .
I just saw J.J. Grey in Austin TX last Friday and wondered what crazy guitar he was playing: It was a blue Teisco Spectrum. I don't remember the color buttons but the shape, pick-ups and strap placement were the same. Thanks Ryan!
there are various models out there
My buddy's mom picked up one of those Teisco's at a garage sale for 5 bucks at a garage sale. He didn't play guitar at all but he refused to sell it to me. I offered him $100, I wonder what ever happened to it?
The body shape you mentioned, the step around the body, is from old Rickenbacker 381 "German Carve" guitars.
You would love vintage italian guitars like Eko, Davoli etc, very "surfy"! ;)
You've got to buy the Teisco Spectrum! It sounds epic. "Lay Away Plan." You're going to feel bad if you don't buy it. That's one of the coolest looking and sounding guitars I've heard in a long time.
Kudos on the Wyld Stallyns shirt
Really creative guitar playing - a treat!
those Teisco Spectrums are badass. They even made a lucite reissue once. definite bucket list guitar
I love Carter’s. Me and my friend go there often even though we never have enough money to buy anything. Just a great feeling guitar shop.
That spectrum 5 is stereo that's why you're only getting the treble strings . Use 2 leads and 2 amps for even more fun
Push it real good! Thanks, that was a great idea To include that riff!
About time you went to Carters!!! (Granted you may have went before but I missed it if so).
Either way.... YAY!!!!!
I go to Carters to drool a lot.
you deserve that guitar Ryan. And I like your playing, one doesnt have to be perfect or the best.
Man, you didn‘t play the out of phase sound with the fuzz! This guitar is so freakin cool!
Eastwood makes a new cheaper(ish) version of the the Teisco Spectrum. It's about $1000 less, which is still expensive
I think the extra output on the Teisco is to split the bass and treble pickups when on the ‘red’ setting. Cool guitar!
If I thought you'd care I'd send you pics of my Burns and Burns/Baldwin collection from 1963 to present. All excellent instruments. I also have two Fender Strats with Burns Tri-sonic pickups.
You know people actually get paid to demo guiltars
i stand by that spelling now that it happened
Have you tried 60s Argentinian electric guitars? There is some very interesting models
Sick tones! I want that spectrum!
Seems to me that teisco has 2 outputs and that's why there was no low because you were not using both. Just a thought.
Best of the funky ass guitars. Should grab that Spectrum...
It's such a shame you didn't show off the coolest thing about the Teisco which is the split bass and treble outputs
Now I’m seriously on the hunt for the Wilburys guitar. Or 3 because they’re all different designs. I’m already into the Teiscos and have a real cool sunburst Tele style.
If you were to watch "Finish What You Started" video by Van Halen you just might see EVH with one in his hands
I had a Burns Bison for years. Very characterful.
Those Teisco Soectrum V guitars were reissued a while ago, want want want!
That second guitar - beautiful tone!
You need to get your hands on one of those soviet made Admiral AKs! There's a video of someone demoing one, but it's in Russian 😖
Come, Ryan. Come to the Teisco side. I have an ES-440, a slightly earlier model with 4 offset pickups. It also has a simple spring tremolo, but the weirdest thing about mine (and the one you played, I think) is the different wiring schemes. Mine has three positions for Bass, Solo, and Rhythm, which I think may change phase or just shut off the bass or treble sides of the pickups, and the four pickups are individually selectable. One of my favorite settings is 1 and 4 together in the rhythm channel, creating a super-wide humbucker. They may not be great guitars, but they are sure unique!
You should check out parker guitars out of eugene oregon. He makes guitars similar to the 3rd one in the video. Excellent vid man! Was there in April. Bought an anniversary Gibson les Paul in tv yellow. Best guitar store experience I’ve ever had. They’re so nice and friendly. Helpful and honest. They WANT your business, rather than some store that act like you don’t know anything and don’t wanna help you at all. Love Carter vintage.
I like these Teisco guitars, they look like UFOs to me
Great vid, gonna have to hunt down 1 of those spectrums to try out some day for sure.
Just wondering, is it relicing if from actual age n use or just general wear?
I just consider relicing to be a more hand worked "look", and wear seems like you're carrying more of that actual age n use to the core of the materials at hand.
Lovin the content of your work bud, keep it up, and have a great 1. :)
The Carter Newsletter is fun to get.
The Gretsch was advertised at $199.00 when new and I always wondered about them.
I love my Spectrum 5. It’s just so much fun.
one of Hubert’s favorite guitars!!
WD40 does the trick when that bridge isnt working
Have had Teiscos on my radar for quite some time. Those old low impedance shitty pickups have some real raunchy tones in them. Have an MJ-2L myself, but a Spectrum is definitely the holy grail. Cool to see this!
I think Eastwood does a recreation of the Spectrum, don’t they?
yeah but it doesnt have the correct hardware. they dont reproduce bridges and vibratos and stuff.
Dont they check this stuff out before slapping a two grand price tag on it?
Shot in the dark here but I just got a 60s Spectrum 5 and I’m realizing I have no idea how to restring it. How does the bridge system come off??
Anyone play or own a reissue version of one of these by Eastwood? Wiring and switches appears well done.
Eastwood sells some pretty cool reissues like the spectrum. Constantly tempted...
Aww, looks like love 😄
If you want to have this much fun for a fraction of the cost - pick up a Jedson, Kay, Harmony, Audition, or even a different Teisco. Any of the Made in Japan guitars are great fun to play and sound awesome, especially when playing cranked. Just make sure the whammy bar is there and working (trust me, you want one with one), and there is still some life in the frets.
I picked one up about a year back, and the frets are gone - but I love it so much that I'm probably going to have it entirely refretted. And it will be worth every penny.
Or the Eastwood reproduction
Shame the bridge pickup isn't working on the Teisco. Neck pup sounds excellent. The Gretsch is a Wall hanger nothing more. The Spectrum 5 is an awesome Swiss Army Knife of a guitar. Has 2 outputs for stereo sound.
+1 for correct use of "sympathetic vibrations"
15:27 Not a dang thing wrong with that guitar! If I had nothing but my Teisco, I could make a living with it.
It's the Van Halen Finish What You Started video guitar!!!
Skunk Baxter played a Burns Bison on the solo to Donna Summers "Hot Stuff".
Got a burns tremendous on my gretsch astrojet, stiff tremolo and a bit unreliable, looks great though
Image doing amp and pedal reviews with that Teisco Spectrum. Do it!
If you push 2 switches down at the same time on the spectrum do they both click on place??
Wondering if the EASTWOOD SPECTRUM 5 PRO sounds anything like the Teisco it copies. Any chance you might be able to review one? They are on the Eastwood guitar site listed as EASTWOOD SPECTRUM 5 PRO Regular price $1,499.00 USD
The Teisco Spectrum still amazes me. I saw it in a Teisco Del Rey catalog in 1967 but never saw one in any retail establishment at that time. Now, all of a sudden these guitars are turning up at vintage stores and I'm still wondering who was selling them 52+ years ago. Most Teisco guitars were easily found at places like EJ Korvettes back in the day but the Spectrum was NOT one of them.
Same here. I had that Teisco catalog in ‘67. I’ve never seen a Spectrum 5 in the flesh-er, wood. My first electric was a Teisco, I think-might have been a Kawai; it was branded St. George. Got it new in ‘64.
I post videos of the Teisco Spectrum 5 in stereo if you want to hear!
I have a Teisco Spectrum 5. Great guitar, but not a lot of great tones. Green is my favorite.
The Baldwin guitar was, as you know, based on a UK design made by Ormston Burns Ltd. I'd love to see what you make of the other models.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burns_London#History
7:20 At first I thought it was an Eastwood Spectrum 5 Pro (a top notch replica of the Teisco)
Yay!!! Inspector gadget!!!!
I don't think you have enough spring reverb on your surf setting.
My money is on you being able to separate the bass and treble pick ups out of each output.
Those guitars are worth a $150-200 I’d say? $2,500 for a Teisco? Ahahahaha
i think on the teisco the low strings coil in the bridge position just doesn't work. and that why the #2 position sounds "out of phase" and position #1 you can only hear the top three strings
its possible
17:20 sounds so f*cking amazing
What’s the purpose of the 2 outputs?
The last one is nice
Eastwood makes a replica of the Teisco Spectrum
Please don’t make these tiesco guitars expensive, I know these type of videos tend to do that
I always wanted a Tasco guitar they stop making them when I old enough to buy one but I think 2,000 +is too much for one I would still pay the price but it would have to in really good condition!!!!!! Easy Van Halen had one !!!!!!!
This video got me pregnant
If you walked out of that shop without that Tiesco, you are a dope.
I’m a dope.
Teisco Spectrum for presidet!!!!!!!!
I like so much of the content here but some something always felt of and now i get it. Skydaddy.
felt of skydaddy?
Eeedy Van Halen had a Tasco guitar
Had a super shitty tulip shaped, floral pickguard Teisco Del Ray over 20 years ago. Worst piece of shit I ever played. I refuse to touch those again except as kindling.
Eastwood makes a somewhat cheaper version of the Spectrum. Non-vintage, of course, but still cool.
I just had to pop on and ask, is that you on the Peloton ad?
i hope not.
🌊🎸🤙
Rude and nasty comments.
The Wilbury was $285.00 USD new. Eastwood does a Tiesco Spectrum 5 clone with the PU's and crazy colored little rocker switches etc.. It was the modeled that followed the one in the vid with an improved bride and whammy. It's $1500.00 USD and it sells really well. Check it out.
That Burns Bison is cool, but $2k is nuts (especially with one pickup dead).
You have absolutely no clue how the Teisco switching works! Here's a clue, the pickups being split might have something to do with it being a stereo output!!!
