Thing is actually not an old Teisco but really early Hoshino made Ibanez made in the Tama plant. This probably would’ve been an 800 or 900 series Ibanez. The mother of toilet seat that’s used as a decorative ornament on the pick ups is actually the same material they used to wrap Tama drums in which is most likely remnants of that same material that was simply too small to use on the drum kit.

@@60CycleHumcast One you showed in link looked very similar to a model Johnny Ramone had in early days of the Ramones before using a used more a Jazzmaster after first two albums. He had a new neck for it from an old other cheap guitar put on also had open style tuner as neck was less chunky, like a Gibson Less Paul style neck/headstock but in short scale. Only thing is he had it panted properly so paint would not peel in a red color right after getting it and had switches not wired in circuit/switches removed with a piece of metal in place, kind of sunk in.

@@60CycleHumcast I checked and I believe this is actually an 883 Ibanez. It looks quite similar to a jazz master/JaguarIbanez at this time was trying to copy a lot of the Burns guitars that were coming out of London if you look at some of the 900 series instruments. The pick guard on these guitars were notorious for shrink king and the pick guards were even more delicateCompared to an original fender from the same period.

You should be able to revive the switches without taking them apart. Look in from the side and you will see copper colored contact points. Use a cleaner like CAIG DeoxIT D5, and operate the switch many times while still wet. If needed, you can reach into there with a micro Q-tip wet with the DeoxIT and clean dirt from between contacts.

    • @flipberkheimer2558

That isnt the usual problem. My own Teiscos (i have a few) problem is that the 2 piece copper contact saddles have widened too far apart and no longer hold the switch in position with tension. It is a PITA to take these things apart and fix with drills and epoxy and such. Mine all have clear tape holding the switches in my favored positions. There are tutorial video's, but I found the juice is not worth the squeeze.

Ryan, hi. For such a bridge, you can use a hexagon socket. I repaired several guitars that were produced in Czechoslovakia in the 1970s, there is the same problem - bridge supports interfere with playing. New screws with an internal hexagon are bought, they are sawed off so as not to interfere with the game, but to have enough stroke to adjust - and voila)

This thing would of been awesome for a professional restoration (stripped down to the wood). My friend's dad had an offset that was very similar, and I loved the thing. It was an actual Crown/Teisco, but I have yet to find the exact model he had. It was covered in chrome, and had similar switches of course. I borrowed it for several months in the 80s and offered to buy it, but my friend claimed his dad wanted it back (I was pretty sure that it was my friend that wanted it back, and his dad didn't even notice it gone). I'm going to that friend's place for a party soon, and will have to go on a mission to find out if he was full of it all those decades ago.

I'm getting major nostalgia remembering the Teisco del Rey l got for thirty bucks from Tom Turner's bargain table back in 1985. It was a sibling to the one you have here. Would NOT stay in tune, would NOT stay intonated. It was, indeed, as the writer of Guitar Player magazine who went by the nom de plume Teisco del Rey put it, an instrument of torture, not a musical instrument. But it had vibe for days and those pickups had a delivery like a brick through a plate glass window. The guy l finally gave it to was moved to tears, and got it set up to play gigs with. So it found a good home.

I felt really guilty putting hard paper shim on customers Squier Affinity tele, but today I saw you use normal white paper as shim on vintage 60s guitar so you make me feel better. When I need something with bigger angle I use piece of wood from ice cream hande and hammer it with two hammers to be thin and solid. That works great too, but hels only when you need bigger angle increase, not some delicate adjustment. This guitar you have was inspired with Italian EKo guitars, they have similar pockguard with metal plate design. The switches could be repaired, I rebuild lot of different styles, but not really economical to ship it to me, I’m in central europe 😂

Ok, I'd still go with the 500k pots. Go over the trem, you may be able to just oil or grease it. Keep it as stock as you can, its cool. Can't tell from here, but adjust the height on the pickups if its possible. Bring em up and get what you can. If they're just trash go ahead and swap em out or rewind em and build em right. Burns tri-sonics look a lot like those, that would give it an interesting sound. Hmm, that metal plate is interesting. If you closed the gaps with foil it'd be shielded really well. Put a real shim in that neck so you can get the action down where its comfy. I wouldn't do anything else to it, I wouldn't want to start adding buttons and switches and such, might just be me.

I have a 1967 Fandel Jet, supposedly made by Aria, since I was in high school.. Kept it clean and in good nick and still plays well today. I heard a story years ago that 1960s Japanese guitars had no decent volume or depth. This individual claimed the factories used substandard solder applied with soldering guns rather than soldering irons that severely affected the sound output. Once good solder and proper soldering techniques were applied, the issues vanished and these guitars really cranked. True? Maybe yes, maybe no. But at least the argument is out there. I’ve been looking into repairing those vintage rocker switches on my own Teisco (a Del Rey model, same as Jon Spencer in the Blues Explosion). You can rebuild them with a lot of drilling and fiddly work. On mine, I hit the rockers way too easily (you often see them taped down on stage!) when playing so I’m going to use one of the volume knob spots to do a three-way rotary switch instead so it still looks original.

That would have originally had a Zero Fret, which are actually quite ingenious. I had a Teisco Tulip with the Jazzmaster style pickups, Ryan, you should look for a guitar with a set of those. Stock wiring of two switches both on gave series pickups. It sounded like a monster. Because of the complicated pickup/wiring situation on this green machine of yours, I'd say set the loaded pickguard aside and load up a custom pickguard with a Tele bridge, Jaguar middle, and a Jazzmaster neck pickup.

The backplate/pickup mount is likely inductively coupled and acting as a really big pickup cover and you're getting eddy current losses decreasing output and acting as a low pass. More passive metal in the pickups as opposed to more turns of copper wire is a cheap way to make a pickup darker, a lot of older Japanese guitars do this, humbucker cases with a single coil bobbin inside and a stack of steel is a common design choice in lawsuit era les Paul copies.
You don't have to have high output for high resistance pots, you actually get more signal with a higher resistance pot as wide open the resistance is all between ground and hot. The correlation is because output increases with inductance and cut-off frequency decreases proportionally. The high resistance pushes the cut-off frequency higher and increases the resonant spike before cutoff and it can get really icepicky with strat style pickups.
Note that the volume pot resistance is in parallel with a thereabout matching input impedance in the first amplifier or buffer in the circuit, and that's usually 500k but can be 100k or lower in a fuzz and 1M or more in some amps and pedals.

Lacquer thinner will usually take off enamel pretty quick. If you are lucky and the wrong enamel was used it will even bubble off, just don't let it sit longer then a min.. Age of the new paint makes it a little unpredictable but wouldn't hesitate to try under the pickguard

Looks like my old Ibanez that's badged under the Crown 882 name. Mine only has two pickups. Two nobs and three switches.

The bridge screws are a big issue. The first guitar i had access to was a kay model e-100 made by valco, and the bridge screws stuck up about 3/8 of an inch past the bridge. Palm mutes were nearly impossible on that guitar, as you risked the screws tearing a chunk out of your hand.

This was my first guitar, however, it was under the telestar name, I wish that the pick guard didn't disintegrate, I'd still play it, after I moved out of my parents house they threw away the body, the neck and all the electronics unfortunately

Can you run the strings under the tailpiece instead of over to get a bit better break angle as a stop gap?

I recently picked up a Guyatone at a thrift store that also has 100k pots, as was the style of the day. I need to replace them, they work, as long as you don't turn them. The spots they were stored in is the only spot that works. I can only find pots sized for pedals. I may just try to rebuild the existing ones (DeoxIt hasn't helped) because it's got a real nasty tone.

The only "Teisco made" instrument I have ever been happy with is my St. George NB-4 short scale bass that I bought from a studio bassist that is also a luthier and mainly specialized on basses. He refret the neck, installed a new nut, redid the whole wiring with new pots & jack and it sounds amazing, but you gotta take in consideration all the work that was done, they do have potential.👍 But most anything you will find on "Reverb" or "ebay" will play worse than a First Act Target/Walmart guitar haha.

And yet, at very least, these old Japanese guitars will still hold some value even if unplayable. I doubt the same can be said for a First Act.

@@seanmckelvey6618 I get your point, but we can't assume that just yet. If we look back in history, Teisco/Silvertone instruments were sold at Sears and other department stores, I've even read that some Teisco models were sold at drug stores like Thiftys and at local hardware stores back in the 60s. Just taking that in consideration, it is very possible that those entry level guitars and basses sold at Target/Walmart/Best Buy will have some collector value 40-50years from now lol
