Celebrating Christmas on the 24th is actually pretty common in Latin American cultures (^^) I'm Mexican and pretty much all of our festivities are for the 24th and the 25th is only really for going to church and to wear off the hangover if you got too drunk last night.
It's also a thing in some European traditions! I'm Polish, and we traditionally had a lot of family over for food and presents on Christmas Eve (Wigilia)
Salvadoran here, and same! We always celebrated on the 24th, had pan con pavo, opened presents at midnight, and then the 25th was just for hanging out/church 😁

I actually loved celebrating Christmas in Japan when I was an exchange studenr during high school. Honestly, at first I thought I would be lonely cause I wouldn't spend it with my family. But it turned out really great. First, I was lucky Christmas Eve was on a Sunday. So, no school during the day. Secondly, my host mum said I could invite some friends over and have an okonomiyaki party, which was so fun. After that my host sister made a christmas cake which was so delicious! And lastly, we took a walk an went looking at the christmas light decorations that was put up around the city. It was simple but cozy and I was so happy. Last year, I actually gave sort of back the nice gesture by inviting a Japanese friend from uni over to celebrate Christmas with my family. She got to experience a very traditional Finnish Christmas Eve with the food, presents and all. We even baked a lot of ginger breads and all so she could get the full Christmas spirit 🥰 She was really happy and we where so glad she liked it.
Ooh, I've been meaning to ask to be an exchange student. Luckily, here there's a lot of transfer students, so there must be some sort of program. If you don't mind me asking, which prefecture did you go to?

Hey Emirichu! I am from Germany and I could already tell from your Christmas Market Videos that this is not a real Christmas market. I mean maybe they interpret them a little different in Japan but in Germany there is much more then just stands with the same food. The Christmas Markets here are way better I could already tell from the videos. There are much more stands with different foods, stands with jewelry, stands with games, stands with hot drinks, Ferris wheels and much more! You should definitely come here in winter and go to the “Kassel Weinachtsmarkt” if you want to visit a real one. I think that is the most christmassy Christmas Market ever here in Germany. There is also a Santa Clause which flies over the market in his sleigh and tells a story. The atmosphere is also much more different. I would be thrilled to see your reaction to a German Christmas market someday. I hope you are doing well!

I was impatiently waiting for an unavoidable Miku tangent in the video, even as small as a mention. But a whole unboxing of the most gorgeous figure ever is the best (late) christmas present ever ! We Stan Miku
13:12 Now we all know why it took until February for Emily to release her Christmas video. Got repeated distracted by her Hatsune Miku 15th anniversary figurine.
The whole Christmas on the 24th is actually also how it is here in Germany too and probably where Japan got it from. Difference being that while the main church ceremony and getting the presents happen on the 24th, the 25th is still technically Christmas Day. For us it was a day where you eat a kinda big breakfast with your family and spend the time inside chilling doing nothing. When i was a kid that was the day i got to finally try out the toys i got. The thing is we actually also have a second Christmas Day, literally called "second Christmas Day", which is probably supposed to give you more time in form of a federal holiday. For us it was always 24th with close family, 25th evening with Grandparents Nr.1, then 26th with Grandparents Nr2.
I remember the miku concert video, and how you preordered the figure at the end. And my god, was the wait worth it. *The detail* , I'm so happy for you Emily.
Waw, as a Pinoy, waaw This is a big culture shock for me since September all the way to January we still have our Christmas decors on Our December is always filled with parties, so this is interesting to learn in Japan
I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO “WHITE NIGHT” THIS WHOLE WEEK, WHEN 0:52 I WAS LIKE WHERE TF IS THE MUSIC COMING FROM I AM NOT PLAYING IT RN 😭😭 I THOUGHT I LISTENED TO IT TOO MUCH
idk if it's just me, but as a latin-american, i grew up also treating christmas eve as the big day. that's when we'd party, eat, and open gifts at midnight. christmas day was just the rest day (esp for those who drank a lot LOL) since most businesses close that day here in america. i never knew how opposite it was here until i grew up and would hear my other american friends mention it. the latinos i knew, though, treated christmas the same way i did. my mother would say it was always celebrated on christmas eve in her home country rather than on the 25th, too. it's interesting how many ppl and countries have different ways of celebrating it.
This is such a great video, Emily! I love how other countries and cultures celebrate Christmas (or how they don't) so hearing that Japan treats it as a romantic holiday and saves most of the celebration for Christmas Eve is fascinating to me. I'd love to know how and why that happened. Also, we have Christmas markets in the UK - the best ones tend to be in the cities, but you can find them in most market towns. Obviously, nothing compares to the German Christmas markets xDD
I wanna know the story behind the marketing campaign that started it. Thinking of it reminds me of how a bacon seller decided to visit a fuckton of medics, start conversations with them and ask them if eggs with bacon could be a good way to start your day due to the energy and protein they provide, and apparently all of them decided to publish that and suggest it to their clients to that at the same time. Fucking marketing can start cultural traditions in the weirdest ways possible.
@@juanrodriguez9971 Long story short: it's based on the American Thanksgiving/Christmas tradition of eating a turkey dinner for the holidays. Some Japanese marketing guy was like "Well what if we did that.. but with fried chicken? That seems pretty American to me." And so it was. Def a fun little history/culture story to look into
Re: Christmas Eve, that's actually the same in Denmark! The normal day to celebrate is on the 24th, and we took the "eve" of Christmas eve to just mean evening, so it'øs basically just the day/evening where you eat good food with your family, and even exchange presents!
I grew up in Shanghai and I remember how uniquely warm and festive it was, not because everywhere else was festive, but because the house was warm, the outside cold, and the house was full of pretty lights
Christmas 2023 was a rather somber yet nostalgic one. We suffered a loss a week before Christmas and throughout the holiday, I felt not like myself. But seeing this video made my day and made me realize that though we lost someone to us, our family was still together no matter what, and that's what Christmas should feel like. P.S. If you can, go to Germany sometime and experience the magic of Christmas in Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Munich, and so many others!
To me it’s not a surprise at all. Japan’s like 2% Christian. They got their own traditions. I do wonder what Christmas in Korea would be like considering it has a much higher Christian population, about a 1/4th.
@@ac1455The thing is that traditionally Christian countries also have their own traditions. Here in Poland unlike other countries we don't eat meat for example.
It's fine to be a bit late about Christmas. We still haven't had our family Christmas dinner since someone has been travelling all the time, but we will have it soon, it's perfectly fine to have a Christmas dinner in the middle of Februari.
For me, Christmas markets are the sole reason why my winterdepression didn't go more downhill. Especially the medieval ones are super fun! Watching ppl take a dip in a bathtub in the public, throwing some axes and doing some archery while you are drunk from drinking too much of delicious Glühwein. Daaa besttt Hope that encouraged you more to visit them in Germany! :)
My filipino heart over the jollibee chicken preference! aaaahhh i love you! also, i think youll like christmas here because ours has the longest celebration haha. and thats a georgeous miku statue!
Azabu Juban has a Christmas market annually, from what I remember, it's pretty legit...and really expensive. But we have hot Christmases in Australia so it's not really a great indicator. Though it was definitely better looking than the Coldplay concert you went to lol. Ebisu Gardens is also pretty Christmasy. They usually put up a giant tree at the square there and it's more romantic for couples.
can't stop smiling watching you fangirling on Miku, strawberries and her details, that's makes me so happy, also thank you for sharing this experience with us 🥺💕💕💕💕 love how cute you draw sydsnap 😍💕💕💕💕

God Created us, we sinned (lying, stealing, adultery, and hate) and deserve hell because God punishes sin. But God, in his love sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and whoever turns from sin and believes in Jesus will not perish but have life after death.
Broke: Kentucky Fried Chicken
Woke: Korean Fried Chicken
Honestly, this is the video I needed to keep my Christmas spirits high for the next 323 days, so thank you. :D
“Less Jesus and more fried chicken” I’m rolling on the floor 😂😂😂😂
"Its more like a second valentines day"
"I thought that was white day?"
"Ok a THIRD valentines day"
That exchange got me.
@@marval2094 yes 😂
Emily: Wouldn't you say Christmas deserves to be relevant year round?
Me: ... No, cause your not taking Halloween from me Emily.
Halloween gang for lifeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
I remember the miku concert video, and how you preordered the figure at the end. And my god, was the wait worth it. *The detail* , I'm so happy for you Emily.
Great vid! I loved the Syndey cameo throughout, she's such a good VA. Also that Miku figure is 🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
emily spending the last few minutes fanning over the miku figure is so real
CONGRATS ON YOUR MIKU FIGURE!!!!
I am laughing because my inner monologue opening this video was what you introed with LMAO
0:59 It's been 8 months since Penacony released... Time files, huh...
Waw, as a Pinoy, waaw
This is a big culture shock for me since September all the way to January we still have our Christmas decors on
Our December is always filled with parties, so this is interesting to learn in Japan
11:27 THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR PRONOUNCING MACARON CORRECTLY 😭😭😭
I’VE BEEN LISTENING TO “WHITE NIGHT” THIS WHOLE WEEK, WHEN 0:52 I WAS LIKE WHERE TF IS THE MUSIC COMING FROM I AM NOT PLAYING IT RN 😭😭 I THOUGHT I LISTENED TO IT TOO MUCH
Loll so true
SAME I WAS LIKE: Wait… is this what I think it is?
idk if it's just me, but as a latin-american, i grew up also treating christmas eve as the big day. that's when we'd party, eat, and open gifts at midnight. christmas day was just the rest day (esp for those who drank a lot LOL) since most businesses close that day here in america. i never knew how opposite it was here until i grew up and would hear my other american friends mention it. the latinos i knew, though, treated christmas the same way i did. my mother would say it was always celebrated on christmas eve in her home country rather than on the 25th, too. it's interesting how many ppl and countries have different ways of celebrating it.
It's the same where I live (Northern Europe)! The 24th is the actual celebration, 25th is leftover day lol
It is Christmas Day this year and I am watching this right now. Thanks for making this video! Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
This video in a nutshell
Part 1: late release
Part 2: warning
Part 3: relaxation
Part 4: shopping
Part 5: why she hates KFC
Part 6: M I K U ! ! !
Seeing the bucket of KFC in the thumbnail, I still cannot believe this is actually a thing they do for Christmas in Japan xD
Def a fun little history/culture story to look into
Chrismass is like your shadow. Always in the corner waiting to appear in front of you when you don't expect
Re: Christmas Eve, that's actually the same in Denmark! The normal day to celebrate is on the 24th, and we took the "eve" of Christmas eve to just mean evening, so it'øs basically just the day/evening where you eat good food with your family, and even exchange presents!
Who’s here after the new sick video?
Me!
Yeah, now we know why this video is late.
I just came here to see if anyone had said anything :o
Mee
Me
emily's gallery has to be so full of food and art you might be able to scroll for a hour
8:02 AHH LOID AND YOR ON A DATE (and then Anya and Bond too) so adorable❤️
Love the Forger Family illustrations! Great job Emily!!
Also Emily you have created another Hatsune Miku fan!!
I knew Christmas in Japan was different but man that's surprising. But happy to hear you guys had a good Christmas.
This was truly her first Christmas in Japan.
It's fine to be a bit late about Christmas. We still haven't had our family Christmas dinner since someone has been travelling all the time, but we will have it soon, it's perfectly fine to have a Christmas dinner in the middle of Februari.
I wouldnt have noticed that christmas was a month ago if you wouldnt have reminded me that
I've been listening to Christmas music for almost 2 years all year round. and that's the only evidence of how much i love christmas 😄🤫
The Kaguya references at 9:09 made my day!
Happy early Christmas Everyone 🎉
Dam. This is early asf-
Thank you. Happy early Christmas as well.
Cant fit Chrismas in february yet...
We had chinese new year as well as valentine next these month..
Merry Christmas
0:29 EMILY NO THATS TOO MUCH
For me, Christmas markets are the sole reason why my winterdepression didn't go more downhill. Especially the medieval ones are super fun! Watching ppl take a dip in a bathtub in the public, throwing some axes and doing some archery while you are drunk from drinking too much of delicious Glühwein. Daaa besttt
Hope that encouraged you more to visit them in Germany!
10:16 an ad played and I thought the vid ended with you laughing manically
Same
Emily showing us all the food she ate while I’m out here eating a ham sandwich
Omg wait that thumbnail is beautiful, the artist did an amazing job!!
If you really love Christmas, come visit the Philippines you'll start to see Christmas decorations and events popping up around September
Emily: having a Christmas video on the month of february
Filipinos: ah yes, another one of our people
13:35 she is actually so beautiful. Soooooooo much detail. I ain’t even in this fandom and I want one purely just to look at it
