On this episode, I will show you how to remove your outer tail lights and install new ones. Many tail lights will swap between GS and Aristo models. Be sure to cross reference first, but generally speaking GS300 (98-04), GS400 (98-00) and GS430 (00-04 only) will swap across models. The Aristo models of like-years should also swap over.
I found used GS430 tail lights for $100 shipped from a fellow enthusiast who upgraded to LED versions. Keep an eye out and you can score a deal too!
TOOLS NEEDED
Flathead screwdriver
Phillips screwdriver
10mm socket
Drill or ratchet for socket

Yes, they absolutely look great! Watching this video just made me realize my 98' gs400 already has these tail lights, I purchased my car 7 yrs. ago & you just made me realize this, thanks again!!
Wow, those GS430 lights really freshen up the rear end of the GS400. Also a very well detailed installation video, keep them coming. 👍
Nice Gs!
where did you get your garage flooring?
A place out of Colorado called Garage Flooring LLC. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to put plywood down to jack up the car.
I love these on my gs430.
Great edit!
Messing around with you I ordered the tails lol, that is a good look!
I like the older style light but thanks for showing on the video how to do this swap!
YW. Yes, we all have our tastes and that’s the great thing about customization: run what YOU like. 👍
Just did the same replacement on my gs300, found a set of gs430 tail lights already ready to go at a junk yard and had to grab them 😮💨🔥
Congrats on 1k subs
Good job 👍🏽 very clean 😎
Awesome video but for me I like the original
style
Nice video! We did this on my dads GS4 as well, same Cinnabar Red too. The GS4 tails look ancient compared to the 430s.
Keep up the great videos. I'm kind of divided on doing this to my 98 300. 430 style taillights look cleaner but I kind of want to retrofit my 98 taillights, as the configuration pays tribute to the age of the car.
The thumbnail shows a trunk light erm delete? One can swap the 7443 bulbs in the trunk taillight to 7440's. This allows it to function as brake light only, as 7443s have a filament for both taillight & brake lights.
I thought 7443s only had lower power than 7440s
I really like the newer tail lights. The old ones with amber in the middle ...
Clean!
Can you do one and explain the fog lights situation? Xenon vs Non-Xenon or HID - pretty damn confused about those! ! As a fellow 430 owner the lights really look great!
Noted! Thx! 😎
Not really sure if I'm in the minority but I much prefer the original taillight design (if they aren't in bad shape).
Hey that’s cool. Car guys never like the same stuff. I’m good with that.
@@ForwardMomentum Agreed. I just like the 90s form of them. I have a 2000 GS400 Platinum Edition w/89k miles. Millennium Silver over black. They just had upgraded leather and bird's eye maple wood with unique wheels. Manufactured June 2000 right before the July 2000 shift to GS430.
So nice!! I want to get my hands on some of these updated taillights, just been waiting until I get lucky at a junkyard. Are your headlights from eBay or restored? I've been looking at the crystal clear ones on eBay and they're a nice price, I'm just unsure about quality. Thanks!
Thanks! Restored headlights. Meguiars kit. 👍
Hey is there no third brake light in your spoiler? I have it in my Aristo. Nice video! And nice channel!
Correct. It wasn’t working so I removed it. Good eye!
I don’t really like the way the led red/white eBay Amazon ones look I’m gonna go with these thank you for making this video
Have you noticed/ever worried about the slight gap just above the top of the tails? I
just replaced My OEM GS430 tails with some aftermarket LED ones and noticed that they leave a very slight gap near the top which could let rain get in. Tried looking around to see if anyone makes rubber gaskets, but no luck
I just checked my 430 tails and I see the gap, but I know there’s a moisture channel in there that routes any water that happens to get in down to just above the bumper and out from there.
These are late 2000/2001 facelift tail lights for all models. Don't know about the earlier ones but the facelift reversing lights are rubbish. Had to go LED on the reversing Bulbs. But check the length before ordering, there isn't much clearance inside the tail unit.
you're ripped!
I wish! LOL
Hi guys, I did this on my '99 GS but now I have lights on the dash, the brake/rear light orange light and the handbrake light (always) stay on, how do I get around this? All the lights on the facelight taillights are working well
Go back over the wiring again. Something incorrect was done.
I acquired a pair of GS430 tail lights free but they don't come with the harness, when I went to install I did notice that 1 of the plugs were different... so I couldn't install but would like to splice the correct connector in its place
where can I get the plug/connectors? a link would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like you can get it at auto supply stores for $25. I did a quick Google search and found this: Dorman Tail Light Socket 923-015. Please verify it’s correct before buying.
What kinda wire hardness for the tail lights ? Sorry first time owning a car still learning some parts lol
You need the harness from the newer tail lights (i.e. GS430) or you’ll need to modify your existing harness to work on the newer tails. Getting the newer harness just makes it plug and play.
@@ForwardMomentum do you know by anychance any websites that sells them I couldn’t find any on ebay
Typically FB marketplace, forums, CL are your best bet.
Yo what’s poppin bro, I want to change my lights on the gs300 with led lights any advice where to look ?
Hey - are you on IG? If so, hit me up. I can try to connect you with some guys that are experts.
Forward Momentum what’s your insta ?

The taillight upgrade looks great! Nice work and stellar video as always. While you're in there, might as well gut the trunk and ditch that pesky spare tire/tool set :)
Now you have GS430 ;) It's look great
You should attempt to do a "red clear red" mod with the old taillights by opening them and taking out the amber piece.
I like how you think.
I have two sets of older lights...that's the next move then they'll go straight to eBay😁
I was just thinking about grabbing some from the junkyard to make "candy cane" taillights
I noticed the when you installed the new tail lights that you didn't rewire the black wire for the new tail lights.
Good eye! No need with the new harness. Thanks for the comment.
Are these the stock gs430 lights or are they led
Stock.
Any idea where/how to find that harness/adapter? 1998 owner who was ready to upgrade until I remembered that piece of advice - make sure they included that harness!
I think junkyards and online are your best bet. There also seems to be a couple aftermarket options as well. I think Rockauto may have had an option.
@@ForwardMomentum thanks, is this a part that was included in 430's from factory? What exactly is the name of part I should be searching
The tails I installed were OEM GS430 tails, so I guess the taillight harnesses for the lights?
@@ForwardMomentum yes that's correct, looking for this harness. I imagine the 430 light clip isn't compatible with the existing connection under the trunk liner of 98s, 99s?
Sorry I don’t have more answers. My knowledge is pretty limited on this topic to what’s shown in the vid.
My center taillights are kind of yellow when they’re on. Any way to get them all red again?
Aftermarket replacements are pretty cheap. That’s the route I went.
I’m thinking about putting 3gs430 wheels on my 2gs430, did you notice any handling or performance gains on the newer gs wheels?
Handling improved drastically, especially with my General GMAX AS05 tires. Acceleration dropped a little. I had lightweight 16’s with snow tires and they weighed about half as much as these. In the end the benefits of the 18’s outweigh the minor negatives.
Forward Momentum I wonder what the weight differs would be for me, my car has the heavy chrome 17s. I have the 18s ready to be painted.
Great question. LMK!
Forward Momentum will do, I’m thinking on getting an apexi neo. Did you notice any gains with the tune?
Absolutely. I felt it in the midrange especially. A dyno session is on the list, but I have a few other mods to do first. I have seen guys get 25whp and 40tq with NEO and headers. I estimate I gained 10whp and 15tq with just the NEO.
Hows that tuner working?
Sinister_gs400 all good!

After viewing the Old vs New rear lights display I wasn't swayed...I won't Spend a Cent on this conversion😆...it's Nice..but not a.. Must do ..IMHO
Well the purpose of my videos is also to help people make informed decisions to mod or not to mod their vehicle to their liking. If it helped you come to this conclusion then I’m good with that.
@@ForwardMomentum If i had the skill. .😭..I will do what you are doing...but I won't pay to get it done if the Old ones are working perfectly ..that goes for the Nakamichi audio too...my CD is broken but the CD adapter is even Better...gives me Hands Free phone plus access to my playlist ...But keep up the good work...when your UA-cam peers start NameChecking you..it means your vids are appreciated 👍
ummmm you could've just primed it and wet sanded it lol. Then painted it lol.
Tail lights? No thanks.
@@ForwardMomentum what? No I’m talking about the lip.
@@okistash3075 it shows you commented on the taillight episode. (?)
@@ForwardMomentum the 1st thing you talked about was fixing your lip lol. At like 0:22
Oh weird. I forget after making this many episodes. No big deal. A few ways to skin a cat.
Don't do it!
Don’t do what?
@@ForwardMomentum Sorry, I thought you wanted to remove the inner lamps. Good job! The newer lamps look much better :) Sorry for my English.
No prob! Thx. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something stupid, LOL!
