Thinking Outside the Box: Turning Metal on a Drill Press

- In this video, I’ll show you a possible alternative to a metal lathe. I show turning metal on a drill press, an interesting way of thinking outside the box! I challenge my viewers to keep an eye out for making the most out of the tooling they already have.

Word of warning. Never file against metal on a rotational tool without a file handle. When your pulling the tang of the file out of your wrist because physics happened you'll understand why I said that. The handles are cheap and about 5 bucks for them and can mean the difference between a good day and a bad day.
The school of hard knocks is a better teacher than you.....
So glad I could fast forward and get to the point.
Been doing that for years. I learned about gloves and sleeves the hard way!
I have more than one drill press but my harbour freight drill press is my go to for most work, believe it or not, it has served me well for over 30 years 👍
NO WAY I would ever wear a glove operating ANY machine tool. 45 years experience and I still have all ten fingers! Same goes for jewelry, watches, even necklace. Only takes once...
Good point, I worked with someone that hot the finger of his 'safety' gloves caugnt while using a large drill which reslted in pulling the skin off his index finger, very nasty
Love the name of your channel. God Bless. Nice work
Thanks brother God bless you too
Good words use what you got. Thanks for the video Roy!!!
I threw that box away years ago. Couldn't think inside it if I wanted too. Might just have to use that "lathe" trick myself. Keep sowing, Keep Defining Your Legacy, and God bless!!
Warped Legacy thank you for the great comment and God bless you too
Thank you for the video and demo.
Dude, I really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
4ever Learning thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
perfect for when you need an egg shaped piece of scrap
I've done this before with fiberglass tubes, I had to make a mandrel to mount the tube on, and a dead center that bolts to the table. Now I have a piece of 1/2" bar stock I want to get to a nice tight tolerance to make a semi-precision tool holder.... I was envisioning this method, but with the file in the vise, that way you can file off the high spots of the stock and make the work actually round instead of just skinnier and more shiny.
as always grear video , lots of great video.
Happy Easter and Blessings from my family to yours.
sincerely, Martin Moldovan
Shan Moldovan thanks Martin God bless you and your family as well this Easter
sorry mate but what a load of waffle, all you did was clean up a bit of round bar .....wheres the turnin g in that!!!!
Agreed, clamp some toolsteel in the vice and at least take tiny cuts
@@regbraddy845 but i think filing is also important to get it to the size you want with a caliper or micro but i do agree a tool bit can remove material faster
@@woozhi9218 I did my apprenticeship in the dankest of machine shops haha but that's where I learned the right and wrong ways
the method of connection between the chuck to the spindle isnt deigned to take that force ... how ever i would still try your suggestion. easy way to get toolsteel old burnt up drillbits are still tool steel and the back end of them is easy enough to grind to shape
well check old 1930..1950s popular mechanics and popular science there were items you could add on and machine using a drill press..even thread .just sold an old geometric die head made to be used on drill press..todays generatiom.would survive if it isnt a push button and control..i have to take care of a kid know how to program but zilch manual machineing or using hands
I had thought about trying this.. good to know that it works.
Curious question: why the green tape on your hammer and tongs and other tools?
Shop tour please.... especially your forges with details.
Thanks for the video...
shadowcastre thanks for commenting. the green tape is for when I demonstrate at blacksmith meetings and teach. so I can easily find my tools for clean up after :-) thanks for watching

I'm subbed...
shadowcastre awesome so glad to hear that and have you as a subscriber!
God bless
shadowcastre also I will try and get a shop tour video up soon!
you really need to be careful side loading a drill press because the chuck is only press fit onto a taper and that is all that is holding it on, unless you know that the chuck is retained on a drawbar (in which case it's more than likely a mill) or the chuck has some kind of retention (not likely but they do exist) I would only ever use this if it was absolutely necessary because trust me a chuck flying off at you while it's spinning is not a fun time.
Contrary to believe files do work on the pull stroke and contrary to even more believe it doesn’t dull them.
Very nice to think of that buddy thank you
Your welcome
Oh my goodness Roy please be carefull..I'm not criticising you because I've done this kind of risky stuff all my life to improvise ( And still do ).. But please use Longer tools and take of your gloves and roll shirt sleeves. Yeah you made me nervouse. I've been caught up in machines before and it happens in the blink of an eye. I'm very lucky to still have all my fingers but if you lose yours how will you do your work, pay your bills and feed your family? Just concerned Ok
Always have a handle on the file. If it grabs the pointy end may very well end up embedded in your hand!
I plan on doing this with a hand drill...while I have nerve damage from a broken spine...
And if you think Im being sarcastic, you dont know what its like being poor and just not caring anymore lol
All that talk for just a simple, obvious cleanup job?
You did not turn your drill press into a lathe. W T F?
Looks pretty scary I think I would pressed the file from the front so if something happened I could let it go I don't want to coming at me
Huh. Harbor Freight tools don’t last?!
You got to pick what you buy- the harbor freight stuff I’ve got is lasting ok... that drill press will probably go a very long time.
Does a quick polish on a steel pin and dares to call it metal turning..Go ahead and take 150 thousandths of an inch off of that while I wait..🤧
like the fact that you praise god and thanking god for what you have
NICE
you shouldn't be wearing gloves work with a rotating tool!!
School of hard knocks is a better teacher than you....
Who or what is behind you safety Nazis lately? I notice it's mainly Britts-I say you've had too much nanny.
File and measure fie and measure be as precise as a metal lathe
thats cleaning metal not turning and you can do that with any drill. Never mind keep trying
ya know i think maybe a little in the box wouldn't be that bad. Just sayin...
I hope that you have medical insurance while your thinking outside the box.
Don’t use gloves on drills…ask me how I know.
don't use gloves near machinery!
Very risky business that Roy. How ever, if you are going to do this guys, slide your file in and out so to speak, otherwise you are just wearing out a couple of teeth on one small area of your file rather a lot of teeth over a large area of your file
why are you wearing gloves at drill? you should never have gloves, long floppy sleeves or any kind of that at rotary tools with such power! lathe, mill, drill press!!! they can catch you and really badly injure you! better to be cut with piece of steel, than be catched with machine!
Cut the talking and go to work
