    I don't understand why you don't have 500k subs Barry your content is top shelf. I remember when UA-cam started recommending videos to me from a guy named Rick Beato he was mainly doing music theory and had about 10k subs and he's doing really well now so maybe that's a good sign of things to come for you. :- )

    Most people who have learned from the beginning on a DAW are accustomed to the idea of only changing one level -- fading one fader -- at a time. With a surface, as with an actual console, you can ride more than one thing at a time. That's the way I HAVE to mix, and why I have to have a control surface. That one thing makes the rest of the discussion moot.

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  2 роки тому +3

      I agree if that is your workflow. My guess is the majority of surface buyers have not likely ever really worked with real faders.
      There are some people like you that should absolutely use a control surface, yet other others that can work very well without one.

      using a control surface seems to speed things up. Presonus Studio One is already indie for their fast drag and drop work flow but the Faderport 8 helps me move around even faster esp with the transport control buttons, scrolling rotor and mixing as a hands on approach.

    I love my Faderport 8 for essential functions:
    the faders.... selecting,muting,soloing and arming tracks, the scroll wheel and transport functions (rec/play/pause/reset)...the rest I do with my LogicKeyboard and mouse

    Years ago I was in the process of building a 24ch 8 buss control surface. That faded away as my workflow changed. Presently, I have an Avid Artist Control that I would only implement for the purpose of buss control. It has the famed screen issue as to why it’s not already in use, but in any case your points are directly with my current line of though. Great info.

    I love my Faderport single fader controller. Its not as sexy as controllers with oodles of faders but it is inexpensive and it fits great on the left of my keyboard. I love closing my eyes and using the single fader to set levels, thats one of the few things I can say where it really beats using a mouse. The transport controls on it are really handy also.

    You pretty much nailed it - it’s the idea of it more than the actually having to use it part. I very much like the idea of getting a control surface and pushing real faders around, and theoretically doing 90% or more of the things I currently do in Logic with it instead of a keyboard and mouse. But I’ve only ever truly learned and practiced music production in a DAW, using a keyboard and mouse. When I ask myself should I get a controller, and if I’d actually want to take the time to literally re-learn my whole workflow, and accept that it’s actually going to slow me down until I’m really well familiarized with it… well, I just don’t know the answer, and that kind of tells me that I probably shouldn’t get one 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I loved using the D-Command back in the day. As someone who works with both Media Composer and Pro Tools I found many facilities that employ post editors care most about speed and efficiency using keyboard shortcuts. Control surfaces impress clients and there are valid reasons for a facility to have an S4 or S6, but for the self employed engineer focus on speed and quality so you're not economically upside down.

    Touchscreen monitor is the most practical control surface for me. Very little extra to learn and you still get away from the mouse. You don't need a touchscreen designed for DAWs. I use a standard DELL with Studio One and there is very little I can't do with it. Fine tuning of the faders and automation is still easier with the mouse.

    I have the Presonus Faderport single fader and what I use it for is when I'm recording drum tracks on a project. When I make mistakes, the transport buttons along with the undo button are my friends. I can stop the track, hit undo and then hit record again as I have it set up right next to me on a table. No getting up and down or reaching for the mouse and keyboard. I'm debating of moving to the 8 or 16 channel Faderport (or possibly the Behinger Touch) because I do miss the old days with my Mackie mixer and being able to mix a bit with the faders. Granted that was not a controller but just an audio mixer with 1/4" plugs for the in and out. Now that I have settled on Logic as my DAW of choice, I would really like to try using faders along with the automation. I think if I created some busses for the main parts (vocals, drums, gtr, etc), I could use them for automation. I would like to move away from using the mouse and as sometimes my wrist gets a bit aggravated with one hand and finger doing all of the work. If I could utilize both hands and learn to be more efficient, I feel like it could be a time saving thing as well.

    I found it necessary to move into a control surface and DAW after having purchased a Tascam SD32 which is in my songwriting studio. Having jumping into Softtube's console one and the 10 channel fader console I am happy at about a 7 from 1 to 10. I've been learning both keyboard shortcuts (studioone keyoard) as well as the controls on the surfaces. It does take practice and I'd rather go through the painful process of learning the buttons to get to 2nd nature hits and turns then use the mouse and keys. I also have a touch screen a rarely even touch it. I don't have the need of for it unless I start to fumble with a mouse grab or something intermittently fails. The thing with Softube is that it takes over the DAW so you need to set the DAW faders at -1.5 (my liking) while the controller actually writes the automation. I don't use latch.

    Love the Bling! I currently have 3 Avid S1's and a Protools Dock on one desk each paired with 12.9 inch iPad Pros. I choose not to use Pro Tools. I sketch and do most work in Logic but mix real jobs in Nuendo. The ability to switch between our Logic Workstation and our Nuendo Workstation, on the fly, is remarkable! Eucon over ethernet makes this possible and is fantastic, (when it works.) Eucon is highly temperamental.
    You mentioned "The Great Mixers Of Today" not using control surfaces. I don't know of any (A-List Film Mixers) working without a surface. Alan Meyerson 130 films for Hans Zimmer alone. Dennis Sands every Marvel film as well as 300 other titles. They both use the Avid S6 with a trackball. Junkie XL may be the exception.
    Finally, you also mentioned The SSL UF8 Control Surface.... I'm sure you're aware that the UF8 pairs perfectly with that SSL UC1 you are currently demoing. Are you also demoing the plugin?

      Thank you for watching! Great setup by the way….as far as my comment on mixing, yes, you are right, I did not take into consideration the amazing work that people like yourself do with video, I can easily see why a control surface is excellent for that workflow.
      Yes, I actually got the plug-in demo which compelled me to look at the UC1. The plugins are very, very good! When you compare the price of both the channel strip and buss compressor, the surface is a no brained to me, it’s only a few hundred dollars more than just buying both plugins.

    I am a hobbyist but I wanted the "bling" you mentioned, o r a little bit of it. I got a Behringer X Touch One. For me, who has no experience, seemed a nice bit of hardware. However, I was able to map a similar functionality and more on an old tablet running Lemur, so I sent back the unit. I think I'm not at a place where I "need" even one physical fader. I still can do a lot with the tablet, mouse, and a Stream Deck for shortcuts. For me, the physical control surface is still in the "nice to have" category.

    Just like you I prefer to draw volumes etc. with the keyboard and mouse instead of with faders.
    But I did like controlling my compressors and Eq’s with real knobs.
    So currently I’m looking into a Avid Dock to control all my plugins, but as I own a lot of Softube plugins and the SSL plugins, so I’m also having my eyes on the Control 1 and the UC1. With either I have choose to kind of go with their platform. With the Avid Dock I should be able to control all my plugins.

    Would you still recommend a Pro Control today with today's computer hardware and OSs? I have always been impressed with the way they looked and now that I just started using Protools, the Pro Control would look amazing if I could get one for an affordable price. Also, is there any other addition special pieces of hardware I would need in order to make a Pro Control work (special PCI cards, network cards, external USB hardware, etc)?
    BTW, I do not have Protools Ultimate. I have the propectual license.

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  2 роки тому +1

      I have a lot of experience with the pro control, I had a 24 channel before I bought my D-command.
      If you want to use it with ProTools as it was meant to be used, you need to be on a TDM HD system. Today you can get TDM cards very cheap, as well as 192 I/O’s. One thing you have to consider, is you’re investing in really old technology, so you have to understand that whatever money you spend on it today, is money that you are not likely to get back at a later point.
      Neyrinck Audio makes drivers for the pro control, were you can use it with other digital audio workstation‘s, as well as Protools native, but keep in mind it’s emulating the HUI Protocol. This isn’t A problem for most digital audio workstation is, however it’s quite limiting within Protools.
      The only hardware you need to get it working, it’s a simple ethernet hub, as it connects via ethernet to your computer.

    • @kvmoore1
      @kvmoore1 2 роки тому

      @@BarryJohns Oh, I see. Yeah, I have Protools Native 2021 with the latest features running on a brand new Dell XPS Windows 10 desktop with an 8 core i7 and 64GB of RAM. I have two MOTU 24AI's as my interface. Connected to one of those is a Behringer ADA8200 which gives me 8 additional analog input channels via ADAT as well as output channels that I send to my monitors. I'm thinking about upgrading from the Behringer to higher quality ADAT converters (probably an additional MOTU) at some point. The 8 channel preamps can get noisy if I increase the gain on them too much.
      I doubt I would want to buy old TDM hardware. Therefore, it is great to know there are drivers available where I could still use a Pro Control with my current system. So, I'll definitely keep that in mind and the Pro Control as a possible option to consider. Hmmm...HUI Protocol is limiting, within Protools? I'm gonna have to do more research on that since it is not something I have ever tried to use. The Pro Control certainly is sweet looking though (like the cockpit of a spaceship from a sci-fi movie). I'm also not sure how expensive it is today because I haven't checked prices on the used market yet. So whether I would be able to afford it or not is questionable.
      I used to have a Tascam DM4800 console (which also looked sweet) before I upgraded to my current system. However, I had to sell it unfortunately. Your D-Command definitely reminds me of the DM4800.

    Good video Barry.. The problem with most Control Surfaces is the implementation.
    1) Who are the targeted audience?
    2) Most Control surfaces workflows are not straightforward for the average engineer.
    3) Looks way too complicated
    4) Some are way too expensive for an item that does not pass audio in or out.
    The Yamaha-Nuage is the most straightforward yet powerful Control surface on the market in my opinion.
    Having said the above, I'm and others are pressuring the Digital ( live) mixer manufacturers to "complete the circle of their product. The modern digital mixer is way more
    straight forward than most DAW control surfaces. Pro of using the Digital Mixer in the studio:
    1) Good Mic Pres
    2) Nice Head Room
    3) Nice summing
    4) Programmable routing
    5) Good Fx
    6) Powerful.
    That's the future..

      If anybody does eventually make a surface like that, and I agree it would be compelling, probably expensive for the average user though, they should do the conversion like Metric Halo, where you can just upgrade the converters as technology advances. I prefer faders and a transport control in my workflow as I use the Faderport port8 in my Hybrid mixing setup. Much of the recording industry doesn't mix on a large format analog console anymore as everyone has moved to digital Hybrid mixing in the box with analog outboard eliminating the Mixer in their setup all together. You see a lot of Argosy Console and Sterling Modular desks these days in professional control rooms and mixing rooms that are replacing the bigger foot print analog consoles. CLA is part of the minority group that still mixes on an analog console.

    Please could you elaborate on why you said "If your working with Pro Tools Only use Avid Control Surfaces" For a while I was considering jumping for a few Avid Artist Mix controllers, but before I could get the money up they became Discontinued and disappeared. The Avid S3 for £4500+ and 16 Channels is ridiculous and not financially Viable, as I was hoping to get around 32 channels and cannot justify £9000+ for that. But recently I've had my eye on the SSL UF8 & SSL UC1, was thinking about Getting 4 UF8's to Give me 32 channels of hands on control and 1 UC1 for deeper plugin control and all this comes to £3900. As you can Imagine this is far more attractive than Spending £9000 on two Avid S3's, so is there a reason why non Avid Surfaces are a Bad idea when using Pro Tools? Does it Cause problems?

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  2 роки тому

      All non avid control surfaces have to use HUI emulation which is not well integrated in PT as other DAW’s.

    I'm still waiting for someone to release a control surface thats the mother load of control surfaces, top quality with plenty of exceptional faders with expandability, and built like a dream car, one that works with every DAW and has plenty more that blows the doors on anything else on the market... I would sacrifice desk space all day for it al day. I have UAD compatible Softube Console 1 mixing system MK2 , faderport 16, and single FP V2, running Studio One 6 and LUNA , via apollo... they work and they're great products but absolutely not perfect.

    My tough is if you get a controller it needs to have motorised fader end endless encoders or you going to spend to much time setting the knobs and faders to match the setting on screen, eventually your back at just using your mouse. same with keyboards with faders and knobs after a week you will not use them again because it's wasting time

    • @BarryJohns

  • @NikolausBrocke

    True thoughts. I have exactly the same experience. I had the first mackie controls (three units, I was the marketing director of Emagic :-) They were sitting in my studio for some years. I did not use them, because I was faster with the mouse and I didn't want to spend the time to get used to it. But I still dream of the perfect controllers. Instead I kept my analog soundcraft ghost with 56 inline channels. I use it as a big "patchbay" for my analog gear and amp microphones which are placed with the cabs. Thus I can record and monitor without latency. A big plus! Especially when you put a big load on you cpu with all the digital goodies. The mixing and editing I do entirely in the box.
    Honestly, I don't want to miss all the innovative plugins I am using. And you can not operate them with an "old fashioned" controller. Today the EQs are multiband, offer different curves, can be switched to dynamic eqs, offer saturation and m/s functionality. How do you operate this kind of modern standard EQs with a controller?

    I cut my teeth on large consoles and tape machines. I really miss the immediacy of a real console, but I have found that in reality I am happy with one control surface fader. More is cool, but it is not worth the extra money. I realised that when I was mixing on a real console, I would only ever automate one fader at a time anyway.
    What really doesn't cut it for me though, is "turning" pretend knobs on a screen with a mouse.
    They look beautiful these days, but it is so unnatural that it disconnects my ears a bit.
    Turning actual knobs with my fingers seems to switch my ears on somehow.
    But the resolution has to be right, otherwise it's worse.

      Going back amd forth between Logic and PT, I too have to be fast with a mouse as my control surface doesn’t work with Logic. As far as plugins go, that’s where mybD-Command shines, it’s so easy and you can map the plug-in parameters to custom knobs if you want if you don’t want to have to control every parameter of the plug-in.
      Avid just have that ability to their S-1 controllers, I’ve got a video/rant coming out about that soon too.
