Add an item to your “necessity” list….a wetsuit, mask, fins, weight belt and snorkel. You can save a lot of “dicking around” and conjecturing by jumping in, check prop, leg and keel in 5 mins, done. Then you know it is either engine, tranny, or leg. Grey/ milky oil means water….as you know….heard yesterday from a Gemini owner here that the Stilette (sp?) parts guy’s name is Gary…but you likely already have him on speed dial! Fun vid…..get ready for cat ownership though ( I have a 40’er), there is always something and being scared or emotional gets in the way of clear thinking! Enjoyed, wondering where you are now. Thanks, Andrew
We have definitely considering getting some wetsuits and other gear! 😁 Yes we are unfortunately very familiar with the Sillette Drive Leg spare parts guy at this point 😅 Nice! I hope your boat is doing better than ours is at the moment! Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching! We are still working on this repair, trying to stay positive. Hopefully we'll be back moving again soon!
The benefit of being just a touch behind! Patrick always waits on his favorite TV shows until the whole season is out so he can watch it all at once 😂 Harder to do with a weekly vlog though! Thanks for watching! 🎉⛵
So sorry for your problem, I hope everything is sorted out and it is an easy fix. Wishing you both the best and able to continue your travels south very soon.
Still with you guys! Just life getting the better of my free time! Sad to see things breaking, but I guess that's just a natural hazard of boating life. A key thing to eventually realise is that life will always throw curveballs at you at various times. It's how you handle them that will impact on your life onboard. I bet in a couple more years you'll end up with something supposedly traumatic and you'll be able to deal with it like it's just another day. I'll catch up to the other videos in a bit but I hope that one thing you've done is complete fluids and filters changes all across Thalia whilst you were fixing this issue. It's not necessarily a massive expense and can often prevent hugely expensive repair bills later on.
Thanks! We really appreciate you sticking through us during the good times and bad! It is definitely all a learning curve and I think only makes us more confident/comfortable in dealing with unfamiliar situations while also keeping us humble to the fact that things can always take a turn. That’s why we have to enjoy life while we can! Thanks for watching! ❤️
The Transmission is the next place to check after the drive leg, but we are starting with what seems most likely. Knowing there was water in the oil makes it seem likely that there was a lubrication failure that could lead to a broken tooth on a gear or spline. The drive leg needs to be fixed either way before we get going again. Thanks so much for the advice, it's where we will look next if this doesnt turn out 🙂⛵🎉
Good to know, but seems like a lot of the spots up the cape fear river are still kind of a trek! Trying not to get hit with large tow bills if we don't have to, because towboatus only covers a certain amount per "incident".
Hope everything worked out well for both of you…and costs (if any) were minimal! Let THIS be you ONLY problems down to the Bahamas. Happy New Year from 🇨🇦! 🥰
It certainly wasn’t the way we wanted to start the new year but we are working through it. Happy New Year to you too! We hope to be in the Bahamas shortly ⛵️🤙
You know if Americans would switch to the metric system you'd be pretty happy with 28 degree weather. Here in Canada we call that a nice summer day. lol. One thing you should probably get is a waterproof camera, monitor, and extendable pole. (like they use for window washing) You want just a normal video camera rather than a go-pro so you can see what you're doing on the monitor as you're moving the camera around. (look up fishing cameras) this lets you check stuff like your hulls, anchor, and with a mount for the pole would let you monitor water depth and watch for coral heads in shallow water while slowly motoring. A camera on a stick is the next best thing to an underwater drone which would cost MUCH more. Another option would be to get a good cold water scuba wetsuit, mask, boots and fins. It's not really a fun option, but it'll keep you warm in pretty cold water for 20 to 30 minutes while you check below the water line. Those are usually a 2 piece where the bottoms come up to your armpits and the jacket covers your crotch. In warmer water you can wear just the jacket so it's not useless even in tropical waters. One other thing you might want to consider is having a mount fabricated so you could use your dingy outboard in an emergency. It wouldn't be a great solution, but better than being stuck with NO engine at all.
Yeah there you go! Just believe its 28 C and we will be feeling fine 😂 That fishing camera idea seems really good! Would be awesome to be able to see better underwater just to check what is going on, especially like you said with the coral heads. Some wet suits are certainly in our future, just have to figure out what and when lol I think we could reasonably hip tie our dinghy and use the 15 hp engine to move her, but to be honest that engine has not been running the best either. Also on the project list to fix 😐 Thank you so much for taking the time for all of the advice, we really appreciate you being here with us for our journey! 🎉⛵
While the Celsius scale is commonly used in countries which use the Metric system, hating on the U.S. “freedom unit” is a separate and distinct issue and Celsius does not directly equate to a metric system. That said, you are correct, metric and Celsius are superior. I find it interesting that sailors use “knots” and thereby avoid the whole mile vs. kilometer equation. I’m always a bit internally embarrassed when I have to take a mental pause and multiply a distance by .6, but that is not the first time the U.S. public school system let down.
@@randalltowers2097 I remember being in 4th or 5th grade back in 1978, we told that the US would be on the Metric System by 1980, so we better learn it... hahahaha

@ good luck with the boat BTW. I feel your coldness. While the family and house are in Swansboro, I live on a small cabin cruiser in northern Va on the Potomac weekdays.
So, the ICW _claims_ boats with a mast height of 65 ft should be okay, but I think when you are that close you are very affected by tides, so you must be very aware of the normal tides, along with any kind of abnormal tides, like certain wind directions that over a few days will raise the water level of an area. There are often boards that show the current water level, but sometimes those wear down and people will post on facebook that now it is very hard to tell what the water level is. Definitely don't hold us to it because I would hate for you to lose your instruments on a bridge, but I believe 65 ft is usually the rule of "maximum mast height". Hope that helps!
Sounds like youve had a drive shaft or prop shaft bearing with a seal on it break up.. the cage on the bearings probably chewed up that will be the bumping .. a ball or roller may have fallen out. ...they usually have water and oil seals on them if its moving it will leak water into the oil first going grey then Mayo 😬 ... Your going to have to find the culprit ...hopefully its just the last outer one behind the prop.
Yeah, seems very likely! after digging into it there are only a few seals it could be, but I am guessing the lack of lubrication caused failure somewhere else, so we are going to have a bigger problem on our hands. Luckily we are working towards a fix now! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to lend us some knowledge and advice! 🎉⛵

Definitely agree. After spending most of the summer between Beaufort, SC and Brunswick, GA, we crossed to the Bahamas and found out a few days later we needed a new prop hub on our 40’ cat. What would have been an easy, quick job on the east coast ended up taking over a month and quite a bit extra due to VAT and fees in Marsh Harbor!
