  • Episode#26 Custom Virtual Pinball Cabinet Build
    In this video I will be showing you how to test all of your addressable led strips and led matrixes before you start cutting them up and installing them into your pinball cabinet. Whoops! The leds won't light up? Was it my soldering, Was it my install? Is it my DOF set up? You won't know unless you test them first! Plus if it's bad, you can return them for a full refund. This will also be used to test the full string of leds going into the entire cabinet once all of them are installed in the cabinet. Just change the number of leds in the sketch to the total number in your cabinet and upload! Neat!
    I will show you how to solder up your Teensyduino and your octo shield together, how to wire up your test lead from a rj45 cat 6 cable and a jst connector, how to download and install the required Arduino software, install the teensy loader program, and how to set up/adjust/upload the sketch to test your leds strips/matrixes. This stuff seems crazy hard but is actually pretty simple once you have a walkthrough like this. Fear not! I got you!

I have done all that you teached me, all the leds works fine, but but but I have done every thing that is explaned on the net and it didn't work on vpx. Information is messy everywhere, several links doesnt work, files are old, to many versions... I'm really lost.

    Another great video - really enjoyed the lesson on how to validate the LEDs. Glad you were able to determine the issue with the one strip. I thought it looked like a lot more than 60 and wondered if that was the issue. I think it is really great you show these "real encounters" as that is the most helpful way for others (and for me) to learn. That's awesome! Before you had figured out what the issue was with the LEDs, my first thought when I saw them unlit was, "I bet he accidentally entered the wrong number into the computer for the number of LEDs." I just figured you mighta hit a 3 where the 6 was supposed to be or something along those lines, but it turns out your strip had more lights than you thought. Too funny. Either way you were able to give a great example of what could go wrong and what to do to fix it, plus you didnt drive yourself nuts by working through the strip of LEDs just to later find out what the actual issues was. Whew! Super interesting. I have no plans on getting myself into this type of project as I have plenty of others I am busy with, but your content is so informative I figured there is plenty I could learn and apply to other future projects of mine, or just know things to know things, because I do that too lol. Just a trick about the dead LED strip. Before cutting anything one can try to bridge the DO pad of the last working LED to the DI of the next one in the strip. You can use some flying leads and needles so you do not damage the strip (in case you want to return it to the seller) 🙂

    Good information once again! I'm getting ahead of you, but you mentioned that if you want to do strips individually -- ? Wondering why you may want to do that. -- because I might. I don't wan't the matrix, I only want the side strips so I'm not sure if you'd hook them up as separate like you mentioned or if you do it normally and then set DOF to not have a matrix etc. I'll be patient and wait for the next one, but I was intrigued by that addition of separate strips. Thanks Roland! I am going to use a 60 amp power supply, it's in the power supply video at the end. I haven't nailed it down for sure but you have options. You can daisy chain all of the strips together and do power injection every 180 leds or so. Or you can keep each section or even strips separate so you can control the power for easy setup/less wiring/easier fuse calculation but requires a few more channels to be wired up to the octo board. I'm leaning towards the latter but I will talk about both. Keep posted!

      @@wayofthewrench Thanks for your reply. Your videos are my No.1 Vpin 101, I really love the series.
      I read in a LED Guide, each LED need 0.06A to make it shine bright withe. But in use there need 50%, because not every LED is shine bright withe and they don't shine all on the same time.
      I have a 5V 30A power supply and I'm not sure if I can use it. I'd like to use 792 LEDs (256+64+64 back + 2x 144 left/right + 2x 60 undercab). 792 LEDs need 47,52A for all shining bright withe -> 50% = 23,76A in real. So the power supply still has some reserves.
      I'm not an electrician, so I can't properly estimate.
      What do you think, should I buy a bigger power supply?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому

      @@rolandhehl4289 its really hard to say because technically its not big enough but guessing that it is only using 50%, it might be ok. The issue is the guess. I'm going to be in a similar situation as I'm going to have closer to 1100 leds and I have a 60 amp. Technically I'm over too but like you said, its not full white and not on 100% of the time. You could always start with some sections and see how it goes and add another and see if you have any issues. It is better to have more power than not enough. Good luck on your build Roland!

    Love the video! If I have to mention some tiny things is that the soldering isn't that great. Dont use solder as welding. Put the cables togheter then "paste" solder to make them stay that way. Don't do dry soldering as on the top of the teensy. It might loose after some time (probably a very long time since it's only for a very low current connection for the teensy) thanks to the current. Better do it the right way (as you did on the bottom). 5 volt won't do I thing. You won't feel it. Your body resistance is at least 25000 Ohms wich makes your body get like 0.000somerhing amps. You need at least 0.00somerhing to feel anything. I=e/r aka 5 volt/25000 Ohms = 0,0002 amp. Not trying to be a prick or anything just trying to teach people to 😊

    Great video as always! I'm making the first cuts on my cabinet this weekend. Is there anything you wish you would have done differently up to this point?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Joshua! That's exciting dude! Yes one thing I wish I did was raise my backbox up off the main cabinet even more for my design, like another 3/8" or even more so that when the back box swings down towards the playfield, it would lay flat. It's not the end of the world, I just have to make sure I make a well padded angled block/wedge to spread out the force so nothing gets damaged. I do also kinda wish I painted and put vinyl on my cab right after building it because I will soon have to tear down and do that. However, there has been lots of learning/designing/fixing while I build this cab and it would have sucked to mess up the paint and vinyl. I think if I make an exact duplicate I would be ok with painting first. Thanks for the watch!

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому

      Nope but depending on length or amount of leds, you might want to have power on both ends to prevent voltage drops. Thanks for the watch!

    Teensy 4.1 is now available. It appears 3.2 is no longer available. Will the 4.1 fit the Octo Board and will all the firmware/software be compatible as you have demonstrated? I'm hoping that is the case since you provide clear and concise information.

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому +2

      As far as I know the teensy 4.0 and 4.1 are the same (more powerful) just a longer board so you have to buy some sockets and longer pins to solder them into the octo board so they can clear the board. They are like .70 cents on the pjrc.com website. Thanks for the watch!

    I'am so sorry but i have too more questions 😭so, i have one left and one right led strip and a matrix on the back of the playfield like in your system. So, what i have to do that all are working together? Can I just connect them together or does each stripe and matrix need their own teensy? And how do I program the whole thing in the arduino Software? SORRY

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому

      No worries. I think you need to watch the next 4 videos as all of the info is there and in a better format than a message here. You can put them together or keep them seperate, you just have to make your cabinet.xml file to match. Cheers!

    is there any benefit to the teensy/octohat vs the all in one LEDWiz?

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому

      As far as I know the ledwiz cannot process the info the aleds need for dof led lighting control. A teensy has a microprocessor that can send the power and signal to the aleds to get them to work. The octo board allows for way more leds to be controlled that the teensy can control alone. That's why they are combined together in most builds. I do plan on adding a ledwiz to my cabinet in the future for dof controlled basic lighting of the front panel buttons and flipper/magnasave buttons. Thanks for the watch!

    Hi Emil is there a way to fix the led matrix if one of the little copper pads came off the back? Was moving it too much

    • @wayofthewrench
      @wayofthewrench  Рік тому

      You could gently scrape back past the copper pad to gain access to the trace and solder there too. Just be gentle and if it works, I would add some glue gun to make some strain relief so it doesn't pull off again. Cheers!
