I think the idea for a road course goes way, WAY back - Carl Fisher’s original design included plans for a sweeping infield road course. You can see it on some old drawings of the track plans. I think some purists were not thrilled about the idea of an infield road course, but it is kind of cool that it was just bringing Fisher’s original vision to fruition almost a century later.
