  • Hi all, My name is stanley,
My call sign is KQ4LPW, I hold a general license.
The reason i started this channel is because i dont see
    normal people with normal stations,
my station isnt 1000's of dollars. just a few hundred.
I have nothing against the large ham radio channels on youtube, but lets
face it, 90 percent of us dont have stations that look like that.
with my setup, what you see is what you get, Nothing fancy, but it works
    just fine,

At 58 I got interested in Ham radio and now at 60 I am studying for the tests, I purchased a Yaesu FT-60 last month and have programmed a few local repeaters into it. I bought it because though I am not against anyone purchasing from China, I try hard not to.

Loved this, it's great to see someone talk about how to make this hobby more accessible vs just trying to sell us on the most expensive radios possible! Thanks for this video.

Thanks!!! and there are lots of channels that talk about high priced radios, but you dont need a high dollar radio to get on the air and have fun!!! this hobby is for everyone, not just the ones with big bank accounts..

I have two Baofengs that my now ex-wife got me but to me they are toys. I also have a Radioddity GD-77 she got in a second-hand Mormon store here in Utah. It's a DMR radio and can also be used for analog but programming it is a nightmare because you have to fill out a "codeplug" for it and then download that to the radio. I've never used it due to the pain in the rump it presents. The Chinese radios like Baofengs and the dozens of similar brands have poor single conversion receivers and on transmit they often transmit dirty harmonics. I only use the big brand and well known Japanese rigs and will not transmit with any Baofengs or the like. I have 2 Yaesu's and a Kenwood and Icom. They are real radios. I compared my Chinese radios on receive to my Japanese radios and the interference and overload rejection on the Japanese radios is far superior. I'd rather use my ancient Radio Shack HTX-202 than any Chinese radio. Better to pay for one moderately expensive Japanese radio than 20 Chinese ones for the same price. Trust me.

i always say the best radio is the one you have, its all about getting on the air. the cheap radios will do just that. for the most part people cant tell when your using one, they are lower tier for sure. that said, i do own 2 Yaesu radios and they are top notch!! you get what you pay for sure. my goal here is to get people interested in Ham radio. thats what fun about radio tho, you can spend as much or as little as you like, it just depends on what direction you want to go in i guess. 73'S

The same reason I bought my first Baofang. I have several. now, to some extent for the charging stands, but the radios are good, cheap and reliable ( usually, that is why I have more than a few))

I also bought a Wouxun KG-UV2D years ago. LOVE IT!!! It has the same issue with the memory. But I figured out the 3 settings that I needed to change to “bring the memory” back to the front (it doesn’t really lose it). Now the display has a poor solder joint somewhere and is blank. Just need to open her up and “get-r-dun”. Bring this bad boy back to 100%.

Ive recently become interested in ham radio and am studying for my tech.
I used to play with cb radios and built several quad beam antennas which were awesome back in the early '90's so look forward to doing more antenna builds.
Def new to ham and find the "q" lingo hard to figure out much less how to find a repeater!😂
Wish me luck but insights into the hobby are great!

I got my Tech ticket a couple years ago but I am struggling with memory to pass the General . I had a bad reaction to a COVID vaccine and my memory is not the same. At least I got the Tech . I go nuts on my Qyt and my uv21r . The big brother to my uv5r .

I had a similar issue with Covid in general. Long Covid they call it. Coulda been the vaccine. Who knows. And sorry to hear that. Be persistent and you will get that general. So what if you have to test many many times. Sooner or later you will pass it :) and the Qht is a fine radio. And as for the uv5r. I have nothing bad to say about it. Carry one with me daily,,

The QSO is a great name. Talking about radio is what goes on here. I've been meaning to get my license since the early nineties. Just recently started to get back into it. Since the test is online now, and the bands are opening up, i'm gonna get the ticket. I thought you was close by with the K4 call sign, but then I heard you mention Lexington. Hello from Pike county.

i can get into the repeater up there, not all the time tho.black mountain and the other one, i live in montgomery co, its a pretty go distance for me, but once i get the beam on the tower, i should have no issues getting into all the repeaters up there. and get that ticket!!! all it takes is a little study :)

Hi, I'm a mom of 2 college students that live over 100 miles away on campus. What is the best radio to buy that would work in case a solar flare knocks out cell towers? Do we all need to get certified in ham radio. Rapid Radio sell ones that are peer to peer but run on cell towers. Would a solar flare render all of them unuseable?

    • @HamRadioQso
      @HamRadioQso  Місяць тому +1

Ham radio will be the way to go. But not every repeater is protected from such events if that was to happen. A lot of radio will be dead also. Some will still work fine. Almost all run on battery backup. And the ones that use the internet or cell signals to run a mode would probably be useless. 2 meter radio would work if everyone lived within a shortish distance of the same repeater. To use that band you would need a technician license. An HF radio with HF bands would be ideal. But need a general license for that. But keep in mind. If that event actually happens. It’s considered an emergency situation and a license would not be needed. Also the bands would be full of official emergency traffic. That’s a hard question to answer because there are so many what if in that scenario

If you have had your license for less than six months. You can get a free radio from giga parts. They bundle it with a few things. I paid like $7 dollars for shipping. Here is the link. www.gigaparts.com/qrzjumpstart so if they haven’t changed it much you can get a decent radio fairly cheap. Good luck
