    This is the best video I’ve found so far on how to actually dial in the delay pedal. Sooo many demo videos that supposedly show you everything a delay pedal can do. But they never show how to get any of the iconic sounds. Thanks for posting this.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  5 років тому +2

      Hi, Xagainst the flowx, the boss dd7 is more advanced respect to the dd3 I've used the video so you can follow the exact procedure that I've used with the dd3 but also you can use the analogue or the modulated delay to achieve a different sonic characteristic. The dd3 also has tap tempo that is a great feature that can help you to have a dotted eight delay without too many difficulties. The real trick is to listen and stick to the tempo of the metronome; the main mistake I make is to "follow" the delay and sync to it and lose the main tempo. Listen to the beat and identify the dotted eight, then start to work on the delay.

      1) Set it to the 800ms setting.
      2) Tap quarter notes using the onboard tap or an external tap-in pedal
      3) Play quarter (or 8th or whatever notes correspond to the time signature if you get me)
      4) It happens like magic
      In other words, the 800ms setting on the DD7 is the dotted 8 subdivision setting. It's automatic, the pedal does it for you. It should be in the manual. The DD7 is wonderful and has a few hidden features.

    • @JulianDoe

      @@Lowered_Gadh Ok it should be even easier to get the dotted eight. Having access to the tap tempo (I think that you have to hold the on/off switch for few seconds) you can tap the dotted eight. Once you've established the main tempo of the tune, you can subdivide it into sixteen notes (1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a) and you have to tap on the 1, on the first a, on the second +, and on the third e. So if I change to the previous subdivision the tap it would be " TAP e + TAP 2 e TAP a 3 TAP + a 4 e + a " I usually do not tap more than four times cause it can be confusing cause the fifth tap is on the 4 and the sixth tap is on the "a" of the 4 so basically it's the same pattern of the first beat. I would use the modulate setting cause it's great. Let me know everything is clear.

    I don't understand music theory much.
    What does 1e a2 mean?

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  20 днів тому +1

      It's basically a way to count the subdivision of a measure.
      Here's an example:
      Let's say that a piece of music is in 4/4.
      This means that there are 4 beats in each measure. A measure is a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats.
      Inside this measure you can subdivide the time in several ways:
      A whole note will represet the entire measure. So to count it you will say just " 1 "
      A Half note will represent half measure. So to count it you will say "1, 2"
      A quarter note will be a quarter of the measure or a half of the half note. To count it you will say "1, 2, 3, 4"
      A eight note is half of the quarter and can be counted as " 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and"
      A sixteen note is half of the eight note and divide the measure into four equal parts, we use "e" and "a" to count the subdivisions."1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a"
      In the video I'm using the "dotted eight". A dot after a note increases its duration by half of its original value. Half of an eighth note is a sixteenth note, therefore, a dotted eighth note equals an eighth note + a sixteenth note.
      In 4/4 time, if you're counting sixteenth notes (1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a 4 e and a ...), a dotted eighth note takes up the space of "1 e &". The "a" is the next sixteenth note.
      Since a dotted eighth equals an eighth plus a sixteenth, it's the same as three sixteenth notes played in a row. This can be helpful for visualizing the rhythm.
      To practice use a metronome and begin at a slow tempo. This will help you internalize the rhythm.
      I hope this helps

    So can you provide a couple DD3 settings for U2 with 800ms? Actually looking for " In God's Country? Thanks!

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  3 роки тому +1

      mainly the edge works with dotted eight. depending on the tempo of the song you can use this video to replicate the same procedure for other songs that requires dotted eight delay. if I'm right in god's country is 127 bpm so a dotted eight delay is 354 ms. so set the dd3 mode knob to 800 and raise the time until you reach the 354. you have to use your ears. every knob is different so the "position" of my knobs is irrelevant. adjust the feeback to have 3 or 4 repeats and the level to taste. for this song you should use a stereo system but if you don't have it you can use a slow tremolo after the delay with a low mix to simulate the stereo panning. hope this is helpful

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Matt, as you can hear in the video I use a metronome to make the process clear but you can use whatever you want (i.e.: tap the foot, snap the fingers) to achieve the same result. 1 e + a is a common way to call the sixteenth: you have 1 (first sixteenth) e (second) + (third) a (fourth). As you should see, the "a" is where you want the first repeat to play. Yes, thank goodness many delays have subdivisions and makes life easier but some delay just don't and that's what this video is for. thanks for commenting and have a great day

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  5 років тому

      Hi Grizz, Thanks for the comment. Actually, in the video, I've played the riff by ear and I don't know if it's the right tempo. lol btw the Boss DD3 is set to 800 but you will reach the 800ms only when the Time knob is all the way to the right. Basically, the mode knob sets the range of the time knob; in this case, it goes from 200ms to 800ms. That's why I had to go by ears. Bad it's a little more complicated: it's a double delay: 1/8 dotted and a slapback. If your delay has the possibility to set the milliseconds you have to do some maths. Bpm is beats for a minute so to transform a minute in milliseconds: 1 min = 60sec = 60000ms. As far as I remember Bad is around 100bpm so you have to do 60000/bpm to find the ms per beat. So we have 60000/100 = 600ms per beat that means that our 1/4 is at 600ms. and we can easily calculate that 1/8 is 300bpm and 1/16 is 150bmp. The dotted eight is basically 3/16 so you have to do 150bpm x 3 = 450bpm. For the slapback you can go by ear but if you want you can think about it like a 1/16 dotted = 1/16+1/32 = 150+75 = 225bpm. When the streets have no name has a similar approach with one delay at 3/16 (dotted eight) and 9/32 (dotted eight + dotted sixteen) I don't remember the exact tempo of the song but I think it's around 120bpm. You do the math now. lol. Pride instead has only one delay 3/16 but you can add a 1/4 delay with 4 repeats and a darker tone to have an extra texture. I think Pride is 110bpm. Let me know if it's all clear.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  3 роки тому

      @@fert9825 with analog units you can't set a precise number of milliseconds. You have to use your ears. Don't think about the record think about your band. They will react to your playing no matter the number of milliseconds you're on. It is your duty to stay in time with yourself and your delay setting during the entire song without pushing or pulling. The band will (and has to) follow your time, in situations like this. 4 repeats means that the delayed note repeats 4 times. Some delay calls it repeats, other feedback, regeneration, sustain. I had an old russian delay that calls it return. 1/4 is the subdivision that it's generally part of the time configuration. It depends on the bpm of the song.
      for your consideration:
      1 BPM = 60 seconds = 60,000 milliseconds
      this means that
      60,000/BPM = 1 beat (measured in milliseconds)
      so you can go back and forth calculating the time based on both bpm and milliseconds.
      As a reference:
      At 120 BPM
      1/4 = 500ms
      1/8 dotted = 3/4 = 375ms
      1/8 = 250ms
      1/16 = 125ms

    Great tutorial, im new to delays, what exactly does the mode do?

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  4 роки тому +2

      The mode knob/selector affects the range of Time knob. The Mode selector has 4 modes: S.50ms, M.200ms, L.800ms and Hold. The delay time changes from 12.5ms to 50ms when the mode selector is in the S.50ms position, from 50ms to 200ms when the mode selector is in the M.200ms position, from 200ms to 800ms 50ms when the mode selector is in the L.800ms position. In Hold mode, the D.Time knob controls the repetition time of the hold sound from 200ms to 800ms. Let me know if everything is clear or if you need more help. Have a great day and stay safe!

      @@JulianDoe i see, so the mode basically adjusts the range of the time knob? Thanks! I was just curious because i ordered a dd8 for my birthday which doesn't have time intervals under the mode, instead it has different effects. Thanks very much for the reply!

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  4 роки тому

      @@sledge2742 the dd8 is slightly different. The Mode knob changes the type of delay (analog, tape, etc). Every mode has a range 20ms - 800ms except reverse (300-500) shim (200-800) glt (10-400) and the loop (40s mono / 20s stereo) you can also double the length of the delays if you plug your guitar in the input A and you plug your amplifier only in the output B (nothing plugged in input B and Output A). Happy Birthday!

    Step 2- set to dotted 8th mode

      @@JulianDoe yeah... The strymon is an amazing unit, But on my pedalboard real estate comes at a premium. Anything i need is either on the flashback, or i can toneprint it. So as much as i like the timeline, it would be a wasted on my board.itd be like needing a forklift but buying a crane, you know.like i said my knowlage of delays is not as strong as id like, and dialing a decent sounding echo is something ive learned how to do in the last maybe 4 years or so.before that i just "played" the delays id hear.honestly if i were to purchase anything by strymon itd be the reverb. I have an hof 2 but as cool as it is, its finicky about half of the presets are identical to the others. And how is reverse reverb not included on it?

      @@earlycuyler2295 absolutely. when planning a pedalboard you should consider how big it will be, its weight, and how the pedals interact with each other and with your style of playing. Flashback (normal and mini) are great sounding and, honestly, I don't see much difference between the two in terms of sound. Personally, I prefer something with more imperfections but that's a matter of taste. In my intentions, this video is meant to be a chapter in "understanding the delay" and going beyond the presets and analyze the process. About the reverb, the blue sky and the big sky are incredible, but if your problem is the real estate I can suggest you the earthquaker dispatch master (delay and reverb in an mxr stlyle pedal) or the boss rv (I have the 2 and I love it but the 5 is also very good). Well, if you would like to subscribe it would be awesome. It's a small channel about me, and my music and where I try to do my best to share the things I learn or to demonstrate the things I've got. Right now I'm testing some software but in the next weeks, I would like to post a quick demo of all my pedals and some tips, tricks, how to use it and some experiment.

      Absolutely. For live shows it's better to use digital devices that can allow you to easily and quickly dial in the sound.

  • @capgage1

    Way overthinking this. Use your ear. Like Edge did. Like we did 35 years ago if we were trying to play that stuff. Those who never got it then, will never get it now, even with the full analysis. The thing most people are mystified by, is how you get the modulation with delay, and slight bending, and create that chorus effect and "tone" that Edge got. Just play with a delay a while for God's sake! And try a Memory Man if you cant figure out how to modulate your notes. If you have to do math and engineering to figure this out, then you are done already. Don't even start.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  3 роки тому +3

      I think you're taking this the wrong way. Yes, "use your ears" is always great advice (in fact is what this video is all about - using analog devices means that you have to use your ear to achieve the sound and not rely on presets or a numerical display) because it opens your perception and allows you to explore new sounds. But when you have to translate your achievement in a recording situation and when you have to achieve the same exact sound in every gig that's when settings and "do the math" comes handy. Especially when the delay is the main part of the rhythm and the tempo of the song (so that your entire band depends on it) you have to set it up in the fastest way it's possible. So, what I'm showing here it's a way to reverse-engineering the dotted eight sound to help people to spend less time figuring out "how to do it" and more making music. And I believe it's a good thing. I hope that the people who look at my video feel inspired to pick up their instrument and play. I'm trying to help and encourage my audience to make music. There's too much negativity all around and I know that some guys, especially beginners, can be thrown off by people that say to give up, that they're "done already" and "don't even start". I've been there. Not only when I was a beginner but also when the CTS stroke me, severely affecting my playing. That negativity hurts and can deeply affect the life of a person. I believe that more experienced musician have moral obligations to stay positive and try to find the best way to help people to make music.
