I love the way John plays the guitar during the verses in this song. Seriously, Hillel was a genius on guitar and it's a shame his skill and creativity couldn't develop because he coulda been the next hendrix or zappa. Straight up.

The people who say they "murdered" this Dylan song probably haven't heard the studio version (from Uplift Mofo Party Plan). Chili Peppers ahead of their time. Dylan is the master, and they are just paying their respect. The Chili Peppers paid respect to other artists too, and did it pretty well 🤓

Sunil Davé I agree. I approve of this song. I mean, I obviously like Bob Dylan's version better, but this is definitely an interesting take. I don't know why anyone would be bent out of shape over someone covering a Dylan song - it just reinforces the perception that would cause people to think that way - that Bob Dylan is the greatest artist/songwriter/lyricist/etc of all time. It's crazy how many times either his song was covered or borrowed in whole or part, etc by another band, often fairly popular/successful in their own right. Without doing any research, off the top of my head, I'm thinking Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower, Please Crawl Out Your Window; Guns N' Roses - Knockin' on Heavens Door; The Wallflowers (His son Jakob Dylan) - One Headlight; and I like a couple lesser known covers of "It's all over now, baby blue" by Eric Burden (The Animals), Echo and the Bunnymen, and probably my favorite cover of any song ever - the version by "Them" (Van Morrison/Rolling Stones).
Dylan's version sucks, it's too slow, it puts you to sleep.

This is barely a cover. Some of the lyrics are the same that's it. But I love both versions! It's just awesome to me how rhcp can take songs like this or Havana affair and completely put their stamp on it. That's how a cover is supposed to be. Not playing a song note for note.

Actually I thought that this was the coolest cover ever, these guys re created an awesome song and made is relevant to a new generation all over again.

I've written music for Primetime TV and toured Europe and the US, and I believe that anybody's opinion on why they like or dislike a tune is just as valid as mine (as long as they can express what they like or don't like about it in a sensible way). That's just me though.
