    I can confirm that 150 ppm concentration. My distilled water measured as expected at 0ppm. At one quarter level teaspoon in a gallon of distilled water the tds meter read 150ppm. Next time I will use that meter to mix up smaller batches. I only have a few CP in a twelve inch Panterra bowl. This will be my first time fertilizing these plants. I have been growing these successfully for six years.

      Thanks for confirming this. I only have a few plants so only need a small amount of solution. I was trying to mix up a 500mL batch and it was difficult even with a jewelry scale. Ended up just pinching tiny amounts and bumping up the TDS until I hit 150-200...settled at 160ppm which is close enough for me.

    I've seen great results using MaxSea. Just to offer my experience, I use the same 1/4 teaspoon per gallon formula, but I spray once a week rather than once a month. I haven't seen any ill effects. I spray it liberally on all my carnivorous plant species, including butterworts. In fact, I found that my P. moctezumaes were constantly flowering and shrinking in size until I began spraying them weekly, which immediately made them stop flowering and start growing large again.

    • @NDRAMSMOOTH
      @NDRAMSMOOTH 5 років тому

      Preston... Yep, I'm at 1/4 teaspoon a gallon once per week also, I have a twice per week study/test area set up and if I like the results that will be my new program. Either that or I'll have room for some new plants. LOL

    Thank goodness some one else uses folia feeding. I use Powerfeed by Seasol and just the Seasol version, 1ml per litre of each into a sprayer. Although, I could use just the Powerfeed. Works great on my seedlings and pitcher plants. New sub for folia fertilising :)

    this was very helpful Brad. i'm new to the hobby and trying to understand what is possible. do you ever notice the Drosera losing dew in the days following feeding? in my early tests it almost seemed to "burn out" the tentacles to were they didn't produce dew. but it is also possible i did not have enough humidity at that time too.

    I found your channel yesterday and subscribed because I liked what I saw. In addition to my bonsais and lemon trees, I have just bought a Venus Fly Trap hence my interest with what you do. I know nothing really except a little about moistness and planting. I repotted the plant in sphagnum moss and I think it is off to a reasonable start. I have constantly read and heard that they are not to be fertilised. I am correct? Any other links to maintaining the plant would be fab. Thanks...Tim

    • @NDRAMSMOOTH
      @NDRAMSMOOTH 5 років тому

      +Tim Marshall...Correct no fertilizers, only distilled water, reverse osmosis water, or rain water, only tap water with very low PPM mineral content which in my understanding isn't common. MaxSea is great foliar feed (way less than recommended on product for regular plants though so careful careful) as Stated here if insects aren't available, also rehydrated blood worms are used for insect replacement and tiny beta fish food can be given to tiny fly traps after rehydration with end of tooth pick, but with Fly trap the trap must be stimulated after trap closes on non living food in order to mimic struggling insect otherwise digestive fluids normally released within the trap will not be released and trap will open without digesting and or die from whatever was introduced rotting.This entails very gently gripping the trap with tweezers repeatedly or between fingers with large mature traps. Lots of fly trap care tp be found though. hope this helps.

    • @timmarshall4881
      @timmarshall4881 5 років тому

      NDRAMSMOOTH Thank you. That is a big help. I did know about the watering as I watch Nigel Saunders channel with his bonsai and only use rainwater. Interesting to know about the Max Sea product. Have you any knowledge of using that with lemon trees and Ficus Retusa? As said, this is my first venture into the fly Trap and It’s real fun to learn and hopefully raise a successful plant or two. I live in the north of England in Yorkshire where the typical temperatures in winter are just below freezing to around 6 centigrade. I have removed the plant to an unheated greenhouse. It was bought from a nursery. Hoping that I have done the correct thing in replanting in sphagnum moss. Anyway, I appreciate your help greatly. Tim

    • @NDRAMSMOOTH
      @NDRAMSMOOTH 5 років тому

      @@timmarshall4881+++I learned from others that one part sphagnum one part perlite and one part sand like for pool filters not sand for sand box or regular like for mixing cement though , and I haven't heard of any plants in my travels that don't enjoy Maxsea, only quarter tea spoon for carnivorous as you've seen here but regular dose I'd say for everything else. Their website could give more insight than me though. I live in Ohio and have yet to leave any of my Carnivorous plants outside as of yet, I'm just not brave enough, it falls below freezing to often and for to long so I would really have to insulate with crazy thick mulch and tarp. And if your Bog garden is above ground here It would need bails of hay around perimeter in hope of keeping it from freezing solid. I place my flytraps in my refrigerator for their dormancy period and then bring them out after winter. And the sphagnum by itself is fine for now but don't let your plant freeze out in the Garage.

I’m more than willing to pay and would love to. Does this work on fly traps? They seem to be the most complicated mine are growing well outdoors but I'm just winging it. The more I learn the more I realize how little I know and no one has any videos on fly traps not any really good growers like you anyways I'm using 20 grit pool sand in a 50/50 mix half pool sand half peat moss with about a inch of sphagnum moss in the bottoms of the pots I use rain water I collect which has a tds of around 12 depending. They are in full sun I have some really strong growers that have many many traps more than 30 per plant then I have some smaller ones that wont grow at all and they are slightly pale kind of a light lime green and I fertilize with diseaseEX by Scott's it's a yard anti fungal but I heard it boosts growth and it does but would this also help my fly traps grow I'm trying to get 2 inch traps but no luck my DC XL are 1.8 inches and my JAWS are 1.3 inches but all my other plants are just under an inch except my small ungrowing ones that are half an inch idk what in doing wrong.

      Get a THS meter and add tiny amounts into distilled water and stir. Titrate up to 150ppm. If you over shoot, add some water to bring it down. Don't obsess over it. Just get it close enough. The THS meter an be used to test the water and verify that it is indeed distilled or soft enough to be safe. They are not expensive and are a very useful tool for gardeners and CP enthusiasts.
