I just saved a bunny from my cousin who was going to give them to her boyfriend for hunting practice so my mom kind of “stole” the rabbit from them to keep it from being hunting. And if they did use the rabbit for hunting the rabbit wouldnt run away or act like a wild rabbit because it’s tame and actually very nice and calm

I have done many of these mistakes when I adopted my rabbit. I bought a cage, water bottle, hay feeder, all wrong.
Two days later, I couldn't support to see her in a cage. Something in myself told me it was wrong. So the next day, i decided to go to a supermarket, bought plank with the right dimensions, shealth, box, to bunny proof my home,... Then, I let her out. She was 3 months old so she was peing everywhere on the bed, and even if i thought I was going to be crazy at the time, I never thought again about putting her in her cage.
Now she has a little tent, a proper litter box with a lot of hay, many toys, she's happy and I'm so happy she is!
I regret I was so naive and had no proper knowledge about rabbit at the time, but I don't regret to have her with me. Even if I did made these mistakes, i was able to learn and understand what was better for her.
I wish everyone could understand that like I did.

(for example, under the bed, put some wooden planks so she can't go, same under the sofa....)
For the rest, be with him, be attentive about what she does, does she eat something you forgot? You will make some mistake for sure (the number of cable for my phone I lost ahah) but you'll learn and finally you'll be able to free home her everyday !

Our bunnies and young children get along well BUT we take lots of precautions. They're not allowed together unsupervised, rough play is not allowed, the bunnies' space is off-limits to the kids, etc. Our kids are young enough that they will likely still be home when these rabbits pass, but they're still the adults' responsibility and that's how it ought to be for now.

Yeah! I get sad when I see people say bunnies aren't for households with kids. Sure, young kids shouldn't be responsible for their care and there should be supervision but it can work so well. Our kids are 5, 4, and 18mo, and even the 18mo is exceptionally gentle with our buns. Teach boundaries, teach proper bun care/handling, have safe areas for your buns, and there's no reason you can't have both young kids and buns.

And my mom is the technical legal owner. I think it’s OK to have a rabbit as a family pet rather than a pet that’s only belongs to one person. A child should not be 100% responsible for the bunny. Yeah teaching a child about rabbit care and proper handling of rabbits and any animal can be very beneficial.

Magpine great comment! My son has rabbits, he’s 8, but I am the one who takes care of them. Because they are his rabbits has to help feed them & each week he helps to clean their pens. I also make sure he spends time playing with them each week. He still has certain responsibilities but the main care is left to me. This is how it should be. Rabbits require special care & should not be the sole responsibility of a young child. I don’t like to put an age limit because people mature at different rates. Some are mature enough at 13 & others are not. I think a rabbit makes a great family pet if the parent helps take the responsibility & everyone understands the care required.

"Be the one who rescues and they will rescue you". This is so true. I rescued my bunny from a family that bought him for their kid and he didn't want to take care of him so I took him. I suffer from depressions but with him around it's easier to live because whenever I feel like crap he comes to me and cuddles to me and licks my tears away and then everything seems better. I thought I was the one that saved him in the beggining but actually he is saving me every day. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be here anymore. He keeps me going. Try to keep an eye on the cats while they're around the bunnies though (if the bunnies are still young that is. When they're older it shouldn't be a problem). I think it's good for bunnies being around other animals, hearing different sounds etc since they won't be as easily scared.

DaDinoDancer :p just so you know when you first bring your bunny home they will need a pen or an enclosure until they are litter trained, bond with you & get adjusted. It’s too stressful for a bunny to free roam on the first day & they will make a big mess if not potty trained first. I have some videos on bring a bunny home & xpen setup. 🐰❤️ congratulations on your new bunny!

DaDinoDancer :p that’s great & will definitely make the transition easier. Just the act of switching environments can be very stressful on a bunny. I still suggest having a pen setup for when you first bring her home. For example my daughter brought one of our bunnies to her dads house. She got very stressed. She stopped using her litter box & started biting my daughter which she never did before. This is just a suggestion based on my experience from the many bunnies I have rescued & brought into my home. Congratulations on your new bunny! Being a bunny parent is the best! 🐰❤️

    Hey everylenny,
I recently adopted a 3yr old bun who wasn’t wanted by their owners anymore. For the first two days all he wanted from me was cuddles. However his old owners never gave him any greens and the moment he tried a piece of Romanian lettuce that’s all he ever wanted from me. In the first day he sat with me for hours on end letting me pat him and he would chase after me asking for more pats. But now if I don’t have any food he’ll just leave. Maybe this is normal but I really miss the old Apollo.

My bunny lives outside happy and healthy. We have an pen ofc so he can move whenever he wants to and ofc play things so he doesn’t get bored. And I don’t think he’s lonely either because he seems to like the company of the birds around! Sometimes when I look out my window or go outside I see him hanging out with a few small birds! And that’s nice to see so I know he isn’t lonely when I’m not always there. I check on him every day give him some food and fresh water and ofc pets ✨ and when it’s cold we put him under the ‘loft’ I think is the word? That we have made in our backyard. It keeps wind out and keeps warmth in. Ofc giving him lots of hay to settle into and when it get really cold we also tend to put a blanket over his home for the same reason as the loft. For summer we give him cold things to make sure his body temperature doesn’t get to high. We also make the floor wet so his feet don’t get hot. We also give him an cold blanket but he doesn’t really use it. It’s easy to see he likes summer a lot more then winter because in the summer he gets a lot more attention.

In Germany having a bunny as a pet is really a common thing and you can go to any vet. Many people keep them outdoors too (a friend of mine also kept them outdoor during winter season as they had a special cage construction for it). In summer my bunny was allowed to move freely in the garden and he was quite an adventurer.

I'd recommend using eBay kleinanzeigen instead of a pet shop at least. Here in Germany you can easily find rabbits there and these private sellers usually care way better about there buns than pet store breeders.. Also you can usally see where they were born and how they lived and see the parents of the rabbits.

I am pro cage as long as the cage is acceptable, also I do agree with the scruff thing, but not the same way you do, I disagree with it simply because they can kick and get injured. I also agree with the water bottles, they cannot get hydrated enough, they can also leak too. ONE THING IS I highly disagree with keeping bunnies only indoors, personally, and I know you and others have opinions too. I personally find that it is OK to keep bunnies outside as long as they are housed properly. As long as they have enough space, shelter from the weather, and such, they are good. A buddy of mine rescues bunnies, she has all of her outside in a barn and they are in tip-top shape 24/7 some of the healthiest rabbits I've seen outdoors and some of them even healthier than the ones I have seen from people taking care of indoors in small cages. In my personal opinion too, I would rather have someone keep their bunny outdoors in the correct conditions and if they still get enough attention, rather than indoors. Because outdoor air is much better for their health. I have no means of trying to offend you, but I feel people like you guys overdo it with animal care sometimes, they do not need to be treated equally to humans, but they also do not need to be abused either. Many people go overboard and think there is only one way of taking care of an animal which there is not. There are hundreds of different ways to keep rabbits and other animals different than the most recommended by overdoing animal owners. Al I have to say is, animals are not humans, they do not need to be treated like them, but they don't need to be abused. I feel that the animal community can get too brutal to those who do it slightly different than a majority of those who act like they know what's best.
