The flavour of this card is amazing: He's a professor who cares about students without many magical talents. If they fail, he will help them get back up and get another chance. He will always help them improve. He will help them overcome obstacles on their way to reach their goal.
I kind of like that if they gain abilities through anthems or something he smiles and says, "Good job, you no longer need my help" while the player is just like "No! Please! Keep helping!"
For the record, some cards read "Creatures may [do blah] as though they had [ability]" - this does not actually give them the ability, and just lets them act as though they did, but they stay vanilla. So these sorts of anthems are free to go in this deck!

In any deck relying on keeping your commander alive I would include some hexproof/shroud equipment. Wouldn't want to swing out then get your damage nerfed by a single removal spell. Obviously also substantial ramp to get ahead of the board wipes.

I was gonna say bearly... But that's not true. There should be enough for a starting deck. And if he wants to upgrade it later on it's pretty easy to do if he's willing to sacrifice some bears.
Agreed on Overrun type effects. That said, when your commander is down, they can still help you finish the game. I'd probably put one or two inside the deck.
I'd love to see an honest deck tech on Ruxa at some point. Knowing that my vanilla creatures can finally see some use is actually amazing news to both me and my wallet.
Ruxa and Ironroot Warlord, Warlord creates 1/1 green/white tokens and gains power for each creature Ruxa+Warlord+token = 4/4, 3/5, 2/2 There's no opportunity for trample in this deck, Ruxa lets creatures assign damage all or none
I'm so excited you did this video! When it got revealed, I knew you'd have to make a video! I'm really excited to have fun with this! My first thought of cards to include for political reasons were Nullhide Ferox. It has abilities, but if someone pays the 2, Ruxa loves the 6/6 body! Lignify is another funny card to include as it's so on-theme as a way to hit your opponents! Finally, Mycoloth would love this deck for a vanilla token theme!
Morph creatures do work under Ruxa's command. Vanilla to bash in anthem pumped damage and then morph for effects like destroy artifact or enchantment from nantuko vigilante or get tokens when you flip your blocking nantuko broodhatch.
Oh, that's actually really cool! You made me curious and I had to look it up because I assumed the morphs had an ability on them that referenced their ability to morph, but the rules don't see that, since the ability is considered part of the "morphable" card and not the version of it that exists as a 2/2! Now I wanna try doing some things with this!
Kenrith's transformation and Lignify are on-theme for this deck, but don't have any special synergy. Nullhide Ferox can turn into vanilla at will, so that's interesting. However, there are some 'sprinkles' anthems that don't technically give any abilities to the creatures, like Dense Foliage effectively giving Shroud but not actually giving abilities, Bower Passage giving evasion without giving abilities, convoke spells making your creatures sort of tap for mana without abilities, Dolmen Gate combined with Ruxa makes them truly unblockable, Quest for Renewal gives virtual vigilance, Great Henge gives virtual ETBs, and I'm sure I missed a couple more
I recently made a vanilla tribal deck before this was announced, and I use Johan as the commander. Due to the wording of Johan, only he gets his ability, not your other creatures.
Eh Ruxa would better suit Rys the redeemed, any G/B tokens deck, any selesnya deck running vanilla tokens, Tolsimir Wolfblood(voja is a 6/6 unblockable with both Tolsimir and Ruxa out), anything G/W that runs enough high white-devotion with vanilla creatures to slap down a springjack shepherd(those vanilla 0/1 goats arent as much of a joke when you slap down 10 of the sods and they're all unblockable 2/3's), or functioning as a commander himself. Ruxa "works" in an Ayula deck, but he's there for flavour above function tbh.
I think that Triumph of the Hordes is still a great finisher ^^ (2 generic 2 green sorcery and grants all your creatures +1/+1, trample and infect until end of turn)
Potentially, but the problem is that if you've been using Ruxa's redirection ability a lot, the opponent's likely to have lots of blockers piled up, and Trample and Infect would turn off Ruxa, meaning they'd be able to block again.
I feel like Ruxa is a perfect commander for new players or players who want to dabble in Commander rom standard or just finding a use for cards that don’t get much play. It has so much versatility and I love it
Another great card would be Sandwurn Convergence as it will help protect the deck from fliers which they’d otherwise be open to. Additionally, the production of a vanilla 5/5 token every turn is really good for deck synergy.
How does the damage assign if the creature is blocked? Does the attacking creature still take damage but the blocker doesn't since it is redirected to the player?
Hearing that word of warning about adding keywords to creatures made me go and check my Slimefoot deck to see if I can safely buff my saprolings with Muraganda Pentoglyphs
For the record, some cards read "Creatures may [do blah] as though they had [ability]" - this does not actually give them the ability, and just lets them act as though they did, but they stay vanilla.
I think knowing when to play your commander in this deck is very key. Without it you just have some beefy boys easily chump blocked, but once you get out your commander out your board now looks much scarier.
It's not quite the most thematically proper include, but I think Ruxa works in a Rin and Seri go wide build. Maybe add some more pumping synergies and mass protection like heroic intervention
Intervention does temporarily turn Ruxa off, but I think that's a great include, since all he gives on the defense is the +1/+1 and I'd gladly trade one point of power toughness for hexproof and indestructible until end of turn.
This would work well in my Ayula deck. Since most bears are vanilla, and the deck is bear tribal, Ruxa would give me another outlet to buff my bears with. I also have a lot of ways to manufacture vanilla bear tokens, which Ruxa would also buff.
Keywords make things non-vanilla, so most bears arent vanilla. You've got the 7 grizzly bear re-prints, token generators and some other outliers. I'd more put this into a golgari zombie tokens deck, or perhaps slimefoot could use it. Turn all those saproling tokens into 2/2 attackers, that ping if they're killed
I'm putting this in my Ayula. I play 6 or 7 bear token generators, plus the 7 Grizzly bear reprints, so Ruxas is working with 14 cards. That, plus being another Bear to trigger Ayula, makes it worth it for me.
So how would this work with luminous broodmoth? Does having a flying counter turn this off or does the fact that its a counter and not just giving a creature an ability mean that it still works?
I can't tell if I'm happy or sad that bears will see more play. I have to assume the budget version of this deck will still be a lot of fun, and you'll be the last alive because everyone underestimates Bear Force One.
The problem with Jolrael is that all your lands keep their abilities, and all lands have abilities. Even basics have the static ability of "tap: add one mana of the corresponding color"
How was desolation twin not mentioned in with the token makers? Sure it's non-vanilla itself, but it comes in with a 10/10 vanilla token. That's 10/10 unblockable to swing with.
Hydra’s Growth doesn’t specify “enchanted creature has…” but rather just instructs you to double the counters on the enchanted creature every upkeep - the creature remains vanilla while the enchantment goes off for some truly ugly amounts of damage if not dealt with!
