Hey Nick: I have the Yaesu FTDX5000 MP Limited with the station monitor. As a ham, it's fantastic. As an SWL it is also nothing to sneeze at either. I also have the ICOM R9500 for many years. It's losing the OLEDs, but still readable. What I can receive with only an HOA vertical and an indoor discone is truly amazing. I also have the Expert Electronics MB1 SDR transceiver. Helluva radio and no slouch on SWL either. The EiBi built in is more than handy! Was worth the 6 grand I paid for it. Wishing you a happy healthy holiday season!
Too much porn in that room, the kid in me doesn't understand anything anymore, I love the style and quality of the RTX FTDX5000, I prefer it to many new ones, don't spend the same money for a modern, Icom kenwood or Yaesu like the YAESU FTDX101D, it's a personal choice i love radios like all the scanners you show.
I hear you about Yaesu shutting off some controls on AM. On my Yaesu FT DX 1200 I can use the contour and notch on AM but the IF shift and bandwidth control are both non functional on AM. You can only change the bandwidth from 6k to 9k, narrow and wide. Nothing else. Unlike on sideband and CW. You can change the bandwidth from 4k down to 50hz. But not AM or FM.
It would be interesting to see how yaesu have as you say ‘crippled’ AM for shortwave listening. A comparison between your 101 and… take your pick would be good.
Ian, I have done many videos with the 101 even though it was not the radio in the title. I usually use it for the scope. The 101 is limited to AM with 9khz filter and AM-N with 6khz, (which means you have to go through a multiple step process just to access these 2 bandwidths) along with DNR which usually adds too much “syntheticness”. I bought the radio after reading all the tools it has and then realized when I unboxed it that they were deactivated on AM. I am very unhappy with this radio other than the scope, which is amazing. I admit to maybe being a little too “over the top” in my scolding of the 101 but you should be able to tell that with these BW and a DNR designed for SSB and CW this will not compare to other premium receivers. It is hard to get motivated to do a video on this. This is a hobby, I do videos on radios I like! Thank you for your comments.

@@ianwilliams5915 if you want a radio for swl with a scope, get an Icom 705, awesome radio, small, battery operated, beautiful scope. Icom 8600 is awesome too but since it is a desk top size I don’t like it because everything is menu driven. It is still a great radio though. If you are in Europe you might be able to get a Reuter, I can’t get them in the US. The Kenwood 890 is nice but a lot of the controls are “Ham driven” meaning it is designed mostly for Hams and sacrifices a few things to us SWL’s. Still an great radio though. If price is not a concern then get an Icom 9500. I have videos on all of these radios for you to see. If you can stand running a laptop to run your radio, you can’t beat an RSPDX
@@ianwilliams5915 i should also add, but I don’t own one, the Icom 7610 sounds like your radio. Since it is an Icom it operates like a 705, 7300, or 8600. Full filter control and full tools on AM plus a beautiful scope. I wish I had got this instead of the 101. Similar size and price of the 101. I would gladly trade both my 101 and my 890 for a 7610 even up.
Hey Nick as Im going over the last few months of your uploads I have another suggestion for you. I see you narrow the bandwidth on the 5000 with the WIDTH knob but it stops at the narrowest position of 500Hz. I think you have to hit the NAR button (left of vfo knob) to go further narrow. I think is capable of down to 50Hz!! Give it a try, you might be surprised ;) Diego
You said it right. When you accidentaly pushed some hieroglyphic buttons, the 5000 showed it's capabilities. in my personal opinion even at 0.341 MHz the 5000 sounded better. Why did you bother setting up both receivers on the 5000? Only for both speakers to be active? Regards from Greece. Happy 2024.
Thank you for your comments. I use both receivers on the 5000 for the ability to use 2 different antennas, Bandwidths, or any other DSP features all at the same time. Plus the audio sounds better coming from the SMU kind of like stereo.

Ron, hopefully you actually watched the video you just chose to insult me on, and see the irony in your comments. The Yaesu 5000 is a great receiver (in all modes) inside a transceiver. Yaesu elected to neuter the 101 in AM but failed to mention it in their advertising. Your comprehension is also quite suspect, as I actually say in the video that the 101 is possibly the best Ham radio available. Apparently you only hear what you want to hear.
Ronald,, OH, the Sherwood list of radios... Nick is correct about the AM filters and the 101.. And the dozens of items that still remain not fixed on the 101 with no fixes coming from Yaesu, Ever,,... A FTDX 101MP has been on eBay for $3500 for now 3 weeks, not sold?? Folks have lost interest in the 101, especially if they do their research... Then we have the new K4, wait list is 6 plus months, and a lot of software issues.. One reason I went with my Flex 6600M radio 2 years ago, great software updates and many new features added... Yes, if you are out on Field Day with other hams all those specifications that Rob Sherwood measures can be critical, but I use my Flex, Kenwood 890S, IC-R8600, Icom IC-9700, Yaesu FT991 radio for different reasons,,, Along with many Boat Anchors for AM, and when you must have Great Synchronous operation, I fire up my Drake R8B or Sony V21 radio.. I LOVE the way that Nick evaluates radios,,, let the Human Ear do the evaluation, real life, not some signal generator... Yes pure testing is critical, but in the end it is what you HEAR not what you measure.. Keep up the GREAT WORK Nick,,, Looks like Yaesu QC may be an issue plus other things with the FTdx -101 radio!! For the money you would think that icom could produce a radio that had a low noise floor. My point was these yaesu radio were not made to be good shortwave am listeners that's all. To refer to them as garbage is a bit unfair. Don't you think. Yes when I want to listen to shortwave I will employ drakes sync with passband tuning . I don't think you can get much better. I think you will find that most CW operators prefer the WJ as it's tone is better on CW.
