    Fabulous! This tutorial could not have been better - literally. I replaced my OLED’s successfully, and by watching this video in advance I was prepared with the Japanese Philips screwdrivers, the special tape, and all the other tools. I opted not to grind down a socket, but I got the pot retaining nuts off and back on with a needle nose pliers. Just as you say, a bit of caution, no rushing, and all was well. Thanks a ton for this video!

    What a brilliant instructional video, with those instructions anyone with a bit of care and patience could do it. That is the best instructional video I have seen. Brilliant work, how it should be done. Yes, keep to your long videos, if anyone wants it to be faster, or shorter a video, they can speed it up under [UA-cam] settings to 1.5 times speed, still very watchable at that speed.
    That video was very entertaining for me, thank-you :-))
    EDIT: Typo!

    I just finished watching your superb instructional video. The new OLEDs are in and my FTDX5000 is now back to life. I cannot thank you enough.

    A million thanks to you for making this video and guiding us on the led replacement!! It was super informative and straightforward. My FT5000 was sitting in limbo for nearly 5 yrs with non functioning LED and I was too shy to ship it to CA or try it myself until today. Any novice can do this if you follow the video to the code. Thanks so much again!! 73

    Thank you for this excellent tutorial. Despite your detailed instructions, when first powering up the rig, all the OLEDs were dark and all the right side buttons were dead. Fortunately, the problem was that I had missed connecting one of the panel ribbon connectors and now all is well. 73 and many thanks. Bob W4ZY

    The spare displays, I got from Yaesu, when the rig was still under warranty, are waiting for years to be installed. Today I found the Oleds on my rig to be totally dead. It seems to be time to get the job done now.
    Thanks for your great instruction video.

      Just finished the work and the displays are bright and shiny again. I hope they will last longer, than the original ones. Thanks again for your detailed video, which came in the right time for me.

      @@thorstenschmidt9070 I am pleased it helped you out. Sadly it seems these have about a 5 to 7 year life span. OLed tech just isn't ready for prime time. The sets I fixed 5 or 6 years ago are ready to be replaced again. Enjoy them while they last, but buy a spare set now to be ready down the road. Who knows how long they will support these parts.

    Excellent video and very thorough. I have one of the first 5000 radios and the main VFO knob had only one very tiight setscrew. I had to order a set of Bondhur T-handle wrenches to get it out without damaging it. I also made the same mistake of leaving the three screws out and had to take the top board out again in order to replace them. I also put the ribon cable nearest the top board in before the board which gave me more room and made it easier to plug in. If I ever do another one, I'll also remove the meter cable from the meter side because it will be easier to reinstall there than on the recessed board socket during reassembly. Also learned about the JIS screwdrivers and bought a nice set of them - K0DG :-)

      Can complain a video is too long.....until you need to fix one. For others there is the speedup 1.25 to 2x. I'd rather have someone be in depth.

    This is what ive been waiting for. Someone making longer videos repairing amateur eqipment. The rest of the ones on youtube found greener grass on the other side. Keep them coming. If a video isnt at least an hour long, i dont like it..

    I DID remember the three screws on the metal sub-chassis. I noticed them sitting on the table just before I mounted the last board. This is a SUPER set of instructions. My only comment is that the little 2-pin connector for the cable from the body of the rig to the face does not show well in the video and I almost pulled apart a wrong connector (the one next to the MIC connector). Otherwise the video makes it pretty straightforward. Thanks & 73 - Don, K2DC

    This was one outstanding video. Thank you for taking the time to narrate as you went along. The video was well photographed with no shaky hand-held camera. I appreciate that your camera angle generally remained the same. I am legally blind and feel that I could complete this task. My only concern would be the ribbon cable installation on the OLed displays them selves. Can you purchase the displays already mounted on the board? de N1PVX

    OLED displays were not ready for prime time when this radio was designed. I'm not even sure if they're ready for prime time now. They're nice and bright when they work but I've seen way too many of them failing in the field. I've even seen on display OLED televisions with screen burn in displaying random images from a DVR. It was an LG set. It cost twice to three times as much as a standard television with the backlit LED screen.

    Hi Vern, I like BOTH of your videos and this one will save folks from learning some of the steps the hard way, like I did (for example, always removing the microphone ring until I accidentally forgot to do so once and realized all was still good). I wouldn't DARE do a 5000 OLED replacement without referring to your videos. I also color code everything and organize the hardware into logical containers so I don't get the best of myself (which somehow, I often do anyway). I have made just about every mistake doing these repairs...and it is a bummer when you put someone else's radio back, together and it does not work, or you forgot some of the cables. Fortunately, thanks to your efforts, I have never failed to do a correct repair, eventually!! 73, Jim WX3B

    Great video, hopefully I will not have to replace these in my lifetime. Do you think the OLED's would last longer if you keep the DIM control on minimum brightness while you operate the radio?

    • @theradiomechanic9625
      @theradiomechanic9625  2 роки тому

      Hi Jim, I don't own one so I can only give a guess.
      But I suspect that keeping them dim will extend the life of them. In "normal" use they seem to have a limited life of about 5 years. Sets I have repaired 5 years ago are again having issues.

    Thank you for such a well-thought-out instructional video, I've purchased a second-hand fdtx 5000mp it's one of the last made limited edition will this have the same issues? If so, I will order 3 OLED for the future. Thank you, this video is in my saved favourites for future reference, hopefully, won't need it for some time.

    Nevermind, I found it. I dropped the face and found a small ribbon cable to the upper encoder board that I either missed or didn't seat properly. I was hoping it was something stupid (me). All is right with the world.

    I noticed my display filter has some scratches on the outside of the panel, is that difficult to replace while the radio is apart like this?

  • @iantoleo
    @iantoleo 2 роки тому

    this is a very serious problem: the oleds must be replaced every 7/8 years. It is no small job because it takes time and money. This is a real flaw that must be taken into account if you intend to buy the Yaesu Ftdx5000.
