I started my channel three years ago, not for going viral or accumulating subscribers, but to follow a dream and teach myself cinematography: pre-production, production, and post - learning how to tell a story, film it, edit it, and publish. As for gear, I learned that cameras don’t matter. Everything I did I filmed with an Akaso (an action cam similar to a GoPro). The only gear I found that matters is investing in a solid sound recorder that will serve for years and then learning how to capture good sound out of it. When I’m brainstorming my scenes, the first thing I ask myself is: what should this scene sound like? That gives me more insight as to what I should plan to film than thinking of the scene as a silent movie with post-p sound added on top. Golly I love your channel! Great topic. As for UA-cam, I hope I can get back into it again soon. Life threw a few curveballs at me and I had to take a break. One of the things I would love to know more about are the rules for hiring actors, models, etc; I would like to hire reenactors to help tell some of my historical narratives. Don’t know if hiring actors is within your field of expertise; but it sounds like it might be. Anyway, take care!

Your advice in this video is great! But I have one question that I have not yet seen an answer for: What do you do to back up your data?
Aside from applying the basic 3-2-1 practice and choosing a reliable tool, I have questions like:
    - How long do you keep them?
    - What do you include? The original files from the camera? The final edit? The Final Cut Pro project? (Do you even use Time Machine for that?)
    - If you make off-site backups to a cloud provider, how do you coordinate your Internet usage?
Here's one of my video capture tricks: I use a spherical camera to simulate multiple cameras. This can useful, for example, for unboxing videos where I want to capture my face and my tabletop at the same time. For workshop videos, I can set the camera up in some central location and it will capture myself working on multiple tools without having to set up a new shot whenever I move. For round table discussions, there's nothing better than to put the camera in the center of the table: It disappears but still it's in front of every participant. There are several ways one can reorient and edit the spherical video into a traditional video. These give outtakes new value because whatever distraction breaks the subject out of character is also captured.
As a cameraman, these make me lazy. But on the other hand, I have no interest in photography per se and they give me more time to spend on the subject matter.

I do agree lot of bullet points because I forget stuff... but that's when I do a talking about stuff video. If I'm doing a tutorial car repair type thing I don't. Usually get my intro points and actions in my head but still flexible with whatever happens... and a lot does. Music, i am a musician so I use mine or my bands music or instrumental version of them during high speed sections of a video I'm making. The best thing I do is get the video subject decided and Usually a thumbnail. When working on old cars to make videos, I've learned to keep it flexible and go with what happens. Cheers from Junk's Automotive Great video. Thanks.

    Hi Kevin,
I’m thoroughly enjoying your channel. It’s really helping me think things through.
I have two questions (for the moment!):
1: I have an iPhone that I’ll be using to film. I plan to film indoors at fairly close range, probably within I’m guessing around 4 feet. Just me sitting across from the camera and talking. Will the inbuilt phone mic work well, would using my AirPods provide a better mic, or should I look at getting an inexpensive wireless mic?
2: Is it better to start a new channel from scratch or pick back up a long dormant channel that has a very few subscribers (fewer than 50; no idea how many are friends and family) already? Any benefit to either one, or extra challenges?
    Thanks!

One thing that drives me nuts, is when people use the forward facing csmera, and any text that shows up on their clothing or in the background is reversed. Is there a way to fix that when editing? Υοu cant imangine what i faced today, about sound library of you tube studio! As im always puting music to all my videos , so i tried in my yestardays one! As i lowered the sound of music so it wont cover my voice, i waited. As i do. Then after getting it ready i pressed to check and guess what MUSIC WAS SO LOUD that covered all my words even if i "saved " the settings!! THEY GOT A SERIOUS problem , thats what "we needed" right now, and no matter how low you make your music IT TURNS BACK as it was , as if you had done nothing! I made it all over 4 times till i erased it ,from my new one! WHAT IS TO DO ABOUT THIS? THEY GOT ISSUE and torture us too! Take a look there plz and tell me what you see or hear!

Alls, filming Im 4k sometimes is too much info for some computers as all the colors and lighting are too intense. I had to go back and fix all the levels of color and light… editing can take a looooooooong time…. So don’t think it will be 15 minutes…. Free i[ minimally 2 hours per edit, conservatively….. but it is fun Im my opinion…. It’s the second most creative part of the whole process…

Can one use # on one’s playlist so that more people see it? Are there any rules about that? Does it even matter if people “use” ones playlist? does it “count” in any positive way for ones channel? I would like to make actual video’s - I’m just not very knowledgeable in anything technical.
And all the rules on UA-cam actual puts me of. Its hard to be creative in any way I feel. Can’t use the music one wants. Cant say this or that. Right now it feels impossible to get started with or to be happy about because one has to live in fear of getting strikes or one day the channel is canceled/deleted. - And they just do it “out of blue”. Thats respectless for all the work many put in. Strange that people put up with it.
    Thank you☺️

To be fair you can't always just use your phone to record a video. For instance I plan to make miniature painting videos and my phone camera doesn't have the quality to show the details of a miniature.

Hi Kevin😊. I’m going to use pro video on my Samsung phone, it doesn’t have the 4K option, but it does have sizes 8K, UHD, and FD with the FPS at 60, 30 and 24. Which should I choose to record that doesn’t take up to much space and will make my recordings look decent? Thanks

I have made a conscious decison not to use any music in my recordings. Why? Because I don't like most of the music UA-camrs use in their videos - very off-putting - much prefer no music!

As hard as it may be, try not to compare. "Quality" is really up to the viewer and many times doesn't play any part in the success of a video or channel. Be you and just create. 😁

Yes, bullet points are good.im pretty good with just talking. But if you get camera shy and one can stumble over words. I feel a prompter is going all the way….lol. Kevin, you have a lot of careers experience, I think for the average inexperienced creator needs isnt as savvy as you are. Even the way you speak, it’s so
“Screen ready…” lol…. But love this video… very helpful.
