Great version, thanks for the upload. The only thing is, it's ironic when the song lyrics have it "I was always just one step behind you", whereas this bloke is simply the best front-man for a band, & absolute star, I've ever seen - and I only discovered him in the 2000s!
As to controversies, without doing my own investigation, I'll only say that I know of three other British icons who were deceitfully smeared, (Sir Cliff one of them), and further, when I was in high-school I knew of kids who would pursue their idols through any means

It's not a double standard dude!! Gary Glitter was ACTUALLY CONVICTED on MANY counts of Sexual Abuse and he even pled guilty to some of those charges!! Michael Jackson was NEVER convicted of ANY SEXUAL ABUSE OR SEX CRIMES!! There is the difference!!
Imo the song fits perfectly because he didn't have success in the 60s at all, and then finally had it with Glam rock
