- Animation requires a special kind of Foley sound: more heightened, and less bound by realism. Plus, when working on cartoons, Foley artists start from scratch with no production sound to match, which opens up a world of creative possibilities. Foley artists Sanaa Kelley and Monique Reymond showed us how they created cartoony sounds for “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Rugrats,” “Invader Zim,” “Teen Titans Go!,” “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness,” and more.
Sanaa Kelley is the owner of Reel Foley Sound in Costa Mesa, California. She has worked on cartoons like “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,” “Scooby-Doo,” “Lilo & Stitch: The Series,” “The Wild Thornberrys,” “¡Mucha Lucha!,” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog.”
Monique Reymond is a Foley artist based in Los Angeles. She has worked on animated films and TV shows like “SpongeBob,” “Eight Crazy Nights” (2002), “Lady and the Tramp” (2019), “Penguins of Madagascar” (2014), “Avengers Assemble,” “Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight.”

How Cartoon Sounds Are Made For Movies & TV Shows | Movies Insider | Insider - Навчання та стиль
i love how they have to think about how the character is shaped, and even getting creative with materials. i'm always intrigued by sound in general so seeing how they exaggerate it for animated shows is cool lol
Yea, those are the things that are missing from fanmade animations online. They don't really think everything through and it's especially obvious in their sound design. They'd just randomly slap some SFX of other piece of fiction like anime and such
they exaggerate it on live action too, especially on action scenes
@@VegaFic These are shows with...budget and a fixed production pipeline?
Fananimations are hobbyist, college students and even high schoolers with way more limited recording tools, cuf them some slack.
@@VegaFic I'm seeing more stuff use foaly these days that one Dragonball fan film for instance
@@dissonanceparadiddle well, those are strictly passion projects that actually took years to make.
it is kinda sad how much focus we put on the actors and actresses when so many people doing different things that make a movie great are behind it.
The crews are really underrated but it is only logical. Actors are the faces that are in the bright spotlight, the rest is more in the background people don't think about. And if people don't think about it, they did a good job.
It's in the job description.
Sound design, animation, script writing, promotion, there is a lot
I get why. Crew members aren't usually on the camera. So people easily ignore them. But it's also a blessing in disguise cause we don't get the spotlight. Ergo no paparazzi or stalkers
I'm sure she makes a great living..but ur right we don't pay enough attention to them
Mr. Crabs walking is just a classic, I love that sound

I like how the first question is "do you recognize this sound?" And the example is wasaaaayyy different from the actual sound
Probably because the digital edits weren't made to the sound yet
@@ghostofthemoon no it's because they used woodblocks for mr. krabs. this is a different artist recreating the sound (incorrectly)
It sounded a lot like him
Nah it was pretty recognizable
Actually if you look up Joshua Weissman and Mr. Krabs. They actually use king crab legs.
They actually used hollow king crab legs to make the Mr crabs sound. The amount of effort pit into the marine biology is really deeper than I'd ever paid attention to.
I doubt it, pretty sure they use a xylophone for Mr krabs. UA-cam videos of ppl playing the xylophone to recreate the sound
i'm pretty sure they used a percussion instrument called woodblocks to make the Mr Krabs sound.
@@criticalhealthmusic finally the correct answer
They use a stock sound effect for Mr. Krab's walk. I don't know the track name of the sound since it long and descriptive but I think it's wooden blocks
Cool
Foley art is as important as any other element of TV and film production. Love that they use Avatar The Last Airbender, one of the best shows ever!
I'm 26 and I'm not afraid to say that I still watch SpongeBob and it's one of my favorite show of all time.
It's meant for all ages. You're 😎
well, Spongebob is an adult-focused animation show TBH.
I'd rather not say my age but I'm an adult too and my favorite shows are Scaredy Squirrel, Peep and the big wide world, Lily's driftwood bay, and SpongeBob. I grew up watching kids shows and never stopped (I also have bad trauma too, so the kids shows make me feel comfort)
I'm in my 30s and I have 2 small kids and I still watch SpongeBob! My kids aren't allowed to though bc it's too erratic for their little minds lol
Age recommendations are just that, recommendations, not something to say “you are to old for me”, I am 15 and people laugh at me when they see my profile pic or just hear about the games i play or movies/shows I watch. I really wish we didn’t put so much focus on age
Massive respect for these people they add so much depth to shows and movies
Thank you !
They have probably created all sounds for the shows we used to watch as a kid thats crazy
Bruh did you watch the video? They create ALL the sounds from scratch

They’re job looks soo simple because they got all this everyday crap surrounding their work space. But they’re definitely artists in their own class
@Nonaya Bidness considering ASMR community is calling asmr UA-camr as "asmrtist" from 2 words of "asmr + artist", hmm I begging to object.
@Nonaya Bidness it's not like artist is a hard title to obtain do anything creative and you could be considered an artist
@Nonaya Bidness are we gatekeeping the word "artist" now? it's what they are lmao. just because it's not your definition doesn't mean it isn't the dictionary's
@Nonaya Bidness if it's so pointless, why did you comment on it so aggressively? lmao calm down and go outside
There is an extreme amount of creativity needed to look at one's surroundings and trying to macguyver a sound using it to sound like something else entirely. Or figuring out what you need to buy to best replicate a certain sound that is your goal.
That whole process of filling a plunger up with paper towels and sealing with duct tape was honestly a really impressive solution
This is really helpful for an idea of how I’m gonna make sound effects for a 3D movie I’m working on!! I’ll definitely come back to this in the future whenever I start making sfx :D
Splice has millions of foley samples, too. I've had that subscription for over half-a-decade for songwriting. Worth every penny. You don’t have to record everything yourself.
Oh good luck bro 😎
@@badfaithnomination Thanks for the resource. Splice looks AMAZING!!!
I've made a few student films, and I cannot over emphasize the use of environment natural sound/room tone, even just a silence and wind/air-conditioning. It makes a huge difference. I like to record different environments on my phone sometimes, mostly crowd sounds and nature (for example I have several from restaurants, the sound of cicadas by a highway, rainstorms, even a ren faire I went to a couple years ago)
You don't have to record those yourself of course. Lol but just remembering to add it helps so much.
@@Amy_Dunn thank you so much!! This’ll help me alot :))
I love how this makes them happy they love their job
Actually, Mr. Krabs' walking sound comes from a stock sound effects library called Cartoon Trax Volume 1.
i was always so curious on how they made sounds that aren't common or normals sounds that you hear. like mr krabs' walk, it's definitely not a normal sound you hear often. im glad i could learn how. very interesting to me :)
I love foley artistry!!
I've done my own fictional creature sounds and horror ambience before. It's so fun!!
There's a lot of times where I've sped up or slow down my recordings
I remember learning of this in middle school and thinking how much fun it would be… almost 30 years later… it still “sounds” like a fun job!
Ba dum tis

Holy.....
Crabs can do backflips?
This is definitely a dream job of mine, if only I knew how to get into this entertainment portion for sound engineering
Mine too.
Definitely look into it love! Who knows how small this industry is, we’re gonna need new folley artists soon !! 😫
Same and I have no idea. I perform, so I have no idea how to get into this part.
Got into sound design for my animations and let me tell you....This alone is an art that can be displayed in a museum.
So much respect for sound design in shows and film. I never noticed how much it matters until I saw a higher budget show with poor sound design and it killed the whole thing. That show "Casual" is just so weird because there are zero sound effects of ambient noise, so it's like the audio equivalent of the uncanny Valley.
Imagine doing the sounds for ATLA, must be soo cool❤️
But why are they making these sounds now when they were already made over 20 years ago
@@CarlosAlvarezli just showing how they used to do it, like a demo. They're also still making new episodes and even more movies for SpongeBob.
@@CarlosAlvarezli 20 years!? Dude ATLA came out in 2005 lol!
@@qxiror5701 that'll be 20 years 3 years from now

Sound designing is surprisingly fun! I'm a solo game developer, and making foley is one of my favorite things to do because it's always a matter of improvisation and using everyday objects in creative ways to make the sound effects for my games. I remember when I was doing the coin collecting sounds for Deathly Descent, I tapped on a glass with a metal chop stick a bunch of times and then mixed the sounds that made together in a bunch of different ways to get slightly different but similar sounds for that.
Video editing too 😅
The lady in the purplely trousers is stunning.
Drop-dead gorgeous, really.
This is REMARKABLE. I’ve been watching animation for almost all of my life and I’ve barely considered the importance of the sound effects. May they be blessed in their work ❤!
They should give her credit for the Mr. Krabs walk type beat🤣
As much as we can talk about how impressive sound production is, can we talk about those classic TV sets? I miss them!
Making sound effects must be the funniest job ever 😁
4:30 Ooh La la, THATS was beautiful
I love all the work they put into this, sound effects are so important in cartoons and video games. For example, in zelda ocarina of time, I love the sounds link makes when he's walking, makes the game all the more satisfying.
Foley has always been the coolest thing to me, the amount of cool stuff you can do and how much life you can give a movie or a show just through foley alone is really cool.
Every time I learn something new about movie magic, my mind explodes. I’m just in awe.
I was down baaad, since when Sanaa was on screen I was barely listening and I kept saying “damn…” whenever she came back on screen.
As a voice actor and someone who works with sound from time to time, this is fascinating
Wow. I never knew so much work went into making the background sounds to build all the audio elements of animations.
Yo when she started putting her fingers in her mouth at the end I lost it!🤣😭😭
This is why I love media and content creation. The possibilities are endless.
Foley Studios are honestly as cool as the sound creation itself. They have open areas, different terrain etc
Man, what a superbly creative, passionate, and hard work foley artists have! I definitely love it. I enjoyed so much to learn to do it back in film school... I wish I could experience it at leat once again. P.S. That foley artist is so fit and beautiful!
Thanks for posting their social contacts too, quite fascinating on how they work
it’s more fun than it looks it’s one of my favourite parts of making Stop Motions especially if it’s ice cream is splattering on the floor
Folly is such a cool thing to do I've got to do it a few times and I've enjoyed it a lot
Mr. Krabs Walking sound is always a Classic. Love watching SpongeBob SquarePants, one of my favorite cartoons.
I loved the times I went to live audio book performances they always had a foley artist doing the sounds. He also had an extra camera so that you could always see what he did on an extra screen. Absolutely captivating
They're there with their work to bring animations like our childhoods to life. Gotta love it ❤
The camera man is the real MVP 🤤😂
On god 🙏🏼🥵
It's like.....all in your face. I think Monique knows what she's doing
Let's talk real here about swords making "shhink" sounds for no reason. It's out of the scabbard it's not hitting any other weapon- someone's showing it into frame? SHHINK
How else would you know it's sharp?
She would be so much fun to work with and learn more from, especially since she helped many of us enjoy Rugrats when we were kids so much 🥰
I always wondered how sounds like these were done in various media. Its interesting seeing how much work goes into this stuff
Probably the most beautiful sound artist in the industry 😊
"do u recognize THIS sounds?"
proceeds to play a sound nothing like mr krabs walking
This is hard work. Its these people that brings us joy to the sweet sounds of folly.
Foley artists are truly something special and I learned a lot about them in school. 😊❤❤
Its crazy how much work goes into these sound effects, yet you rarely see them get any credit.
Mad respect for these people dude.
I just love this. Always cool finding out how different sounds are made. First time I ever heard of Foley was when I was playing a game called starwars republic commando. As you played the game more and more extras were unlocked for you going through the creation of the game from concept art to game testing and it was all very cool, yet of those things I was the Foley art section that always stood out to me as the most interesting part about it.
I always loved how Mr.Krabs walks and runs. I think she did very well givin him spaciel effects good job 👍 keep up the amezing work.
Omg, XD This is great Appa's sounds will never be the same. I'll laugh and be amazed at the same time. Hahaha! This is awesome. Oh man! Thank you for adding these sounds. Loved the sounds for the fight scenes always. Very creative!
GIR AND ZIM GET THE RECOGNITION THEY DESERVE
About time!
It amazes me how much cloth ruffling/footstep/grabbing sounds are put into Half Life Alyx for the characters. You don't even hear it in the game since there's dialogue over it, but they still put in the effort to add the sounds.
this was super cool to see........ but what shook me the most was watching a crab combat roll, ngl..... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey, how are you
@@martiner.patrick7911 this isn't Tinder, dear.
my brain is so happy listening to these sounds
Yeah theyre so satisfying.
My brain was happy watching Sanaa making those sounds
I like how these people made unique sound effects while thinking outside of the box.
Foley artists are so cool. I remember my first look into their work was the special features in Star Wars Republic Commando.
That’s really cool, I’m glad that they appear to enjoy their jobs. I’m sure there are tons of elements in shows that people don’t think too much about behind the scenes.
Now parents may have to think when thier kids experiment and being "annoying" may become a career! I love it🥰
I always hope that stuff like this makes more kids interested in these sorts of things.
If I could turn back the clock 30+ years I would be a foley artist. It’s seems like such a fun and challenging profession.
Foley artists and film scorers always baffle me. Such a cool job and requires some very outside of the box thoughts
This seems like a dream job for people full of dream, imagination & creativity.
I am almost 29 and I grew up loving these cartoons. It’s really cool how in animation the sound effects are made. And I still like to watch old cartoons. I love Avatar the Last Airbender! My brother loved SpongeBob! I also really enjoy Jackie Chan Adventures😊
Recently took a class to better understand sound in motion pictures and it’s no joke. You gotta get very creative with what you use. It usually starts with just hitting things, hitting with other things and the experimentation goes on until you find the right sound
It's so amazing how these were custom made as opposed to being drawn and assembled from a sound library, which I had assumed was Nickelodeon's path. This is amazing. I LOVE all these cartoons and this totally is part of them that I never appreciated!!!!!
0:04 casually two distinctly different sounds
Hats off to you guys! So much creativity and agility! 👏🏾
thank you!
Foley artistry seems to be very fun work, but often difficult job to do. I like how it requires abstract thinking as well as considering the character shape and it’s features. My favorite film sound is the one with the slide whistle!
Start with nothing, and end up creating ages of entertainment and inspiration. Invader Zim was a favorite of mine. GIR was just amazing! Thank you for what you do!

SANAA AND MONIQUE ARE GREAT AT MAKING SOUND!
I loved Avatar: The Last Airbender! Such a good show!💯❤️
I love VAs but Foley artists probably have the most fun job ever! Just playing with random junk to find the right sound, that is so cool.
Dude, this was awesome. What a great way to start my day.
Everytime I see this job, it seems so fun yet so tedious it's crazy
Very interesting!!, I was hoping that they would show how the sounds are made for all the plankton robots in sponge bob !!
Thank you for this, this will help a ton!!
What a beautiful and creative person. I envy this job it seems like a lot of fun!
I thought Mr Krabs walking sound was from the wood block instrument?
4:30 Thank you Editor
Making sounds for animated shows and movies looks like a surprisingly fun, and even dangerous job
Quite interesting indeed. The soundtrack in the avatar was outstanding.
She has a face for radio and a voice for Foley art.
Which one? You know there are more than one woman here, right?
Bless the cameraman who filmed this video.
Lmao and I see why.
The kettle NEXT TO the cable feet - for the Zim character - for potential resonance was NEXT LEVEL!!
I don't even know what to say...
I paused to type my comment after that Invader Zim one, then hit play and the Appa feet were next...
And it just gets better after THAT?!
one of my graphic design degree professors told us this one time that sound design is 50% of what makes an animation/movie fun to watch, and that when we make something for animated media we should put half of our effort into making sure the sound design is done well.
Sanaa is so pretty. AND creative.
