I love my Supercharged egg with two sunroofs. I saved mine from the crusher. It wouldn't pass Cali's emissions and it was off to the crusher. I saved it and got it to pass emissions for a $180 EGR valve.
I have a 94 Altrac but it’s not supercharged. It still is peppy but gets gapped by literally everything that floors it. I need to redo the paint on mine and also wtf is up with the trunk door never working? My trunk door literally never works except when I’ve locked my keys in the car 😂. I also hit a cattle guard with my previa so it’s got a gross dent on the side
My parents test drove the previa with me when they were new, I'll always remember that yellow egg and how the salesman said they were sitting on the engine
The Previa AWD, especially the 94 or older ones they had better differential gearing and it does way better off-road than the Sienna could. There’s also a company that makes a lift kit for it. And then with a good set of all terrains you can go on quite a bit of basic trails with a previa and it also tows well with the 4.3 rear end. It can very much tow the 3500 pound towing capacity.
Which van would you take? Also should I do more of these new/old comparisons? What would you like to see? And yes my scoring system is mostly a joke. Should I could come up with a better scoring system or stick with "the rules are made up and the points don't matter"? 😀
Ethan, All scoring systems for this channel should be considered through heavily rose tinted glasses. An AWD LE Sienna would be fantastic. Decent traction, 3,500 lbs tow capacity and about 44 miles to the Canadian gallon are hard to beat.
Your scoring system is not a joke. Just say plus or minus 20 percent as a qualifier if you want. Ballpark estimates, when they're subjective, are great. No one will sue you. This could easily become a case of analysis paralysis; if you spend more time on a more accurate rating system, it will be too cumbersome and waste too much of your time and we'll get fewer videos. Perfect as is (for this usage)!
Stick with points don't matter. A lot of what people love about cars - styling, interior materials, and even driving feel - is very subjective. Certainly some things will be less subjective (cargo space, practicality, fuel efficiency etc) but not as much as stat geeks would think. That said, looking at the Sienna's grill is painful.
In college I bought my Dad's Previa. I sold it a year later and have regretted it ever since. With 237,000 miles it was running like a top. No ABS and it wasn't an All-Trac, but it was a beast and I miss it. Loved the video man, it hit me hard with nostalgia.
Thanks for taking the time to do it; I really enjoyed the comparison. I am a fan of the original Previa they are so flexible: a people mover one minute and a builder accessory the next carrying sheets of 8x4 plaserboards in its stride, an 8x6 shed, a 6 metres long double lengths ladder sticking most of it out of the back (makong it looks like a giant lollipop from the side), university runs for the kids, camper etc. I like them so much that I'm currently on my second and can't imagine ever parting with it.
I can see that, now that you mention it. When I drove a Previa daily, it had the smallest turning radius of all my friends’ Soccer-mom rigs (Caravans, Jeep Cherokees.... )
Great vid! Next to the Previa, the Sienna looks... overly complicated and horrendous, IMO. I had a '95 Previa S/C, loved it! I also had a '91 VW Vanagon Carat, the last of the rear-engine, RWD minivans. You should do a comparison on a Previa v. Vanagon, but choose the waterboxer, the water-cooled version, for a more relevant comparison.
Previas with a middle bench seat are more practical than those with the swivel seats. The bench has release tabs, much like the rear bench, and just lifts right out. It's awkward and you need two people, but it's convenient and gives you a fully open cargo bay. The other advantage to the middle bench, is that it folds flat in conjunction with the rear to make an improvised bed. As cool as the swivel seats are, I kinda prefer the bench instead because it's just more usable. The Previa actually was a shared platform as well, it wasn't as "experimental" as you think. In the 80s Toyota built a mid engine van chassis that was used for some of the Japanese spec vans, but also came to the US in the form of the Toyota Van (yes, just Van). The platform's last hurrah was the Previa before it was retired and replaced with the 1st generation Sienna. Also, as an owner of both a rwd supercharged and a 4wd supercharged Previa, the 4wd has a lot of drivetrain loss lol.
That Toyota Van was actually called the Town-Ace internationally. From Japan, to India/Pakistan, to south America all had the Town Ace. Had a few in my family back home abroad as well. Very cool cars but prone to overheating especially in hot climates
We bought our '91 Previa LE new and loved it for 12 years before it got wrecked. (213K miles) We looked at the early Sienna to replace it and decided to buy a '93 Previa instead. While the Sienna did have a 6cyl engine, they were cramped and much smaller. Another option not often mentioned on the Previa was the "refrigerator" in the front that ran off the A/C. (We didn't have that.) Loved that van. Not crazy about the city gas mileage, but we got 25 mpg on the highway. I miss all the family trips we took in it.
That’s the only reason it was outsold. It was essentially a Lexus type vehicle, while the Plymouth Voyagers etc., were at least $10,000.00 less. However, 20 years later, Previas still sold for thousands more than their contemporaries; hence worth every penny.
I personally prefer older cars. Nothing new really interests me. I love the rwd layout for the previa as well, the interior and the simple design. But the previa also failed the crash tests horribly. Definitely do not want to get into an accident with one.
Confession: i am 68 years old. I just bought a new Sienna. Apparently trying to re-live my glory days as a 1990’s soccer mom. Have been driving other Toyota hybrids since 2007 (Camry, Avalon). Only have 12 miles on the Sienna so far,. It’ll take a while to see how lovable it is.
@@jodiheatherington4577 Thanks:) I drive a 2001 Previa and it's slowly getting old. Aaand I have 4 kids and live in Europe, where they don't sell family vans anymore:(
'95 supercharged Previa was actually the quickest minivan that year. Ours gave great service fro 17 years, and we had many offers when we finally put it on Craigslist. Thinking about a 2006 Hybrid Estima now. Way ahead of the same year Sienna. (Big grills are directly related to marketing for China. Very popular there.)
Yeah I've had a few people offer to buy my 93 all Trac supercharged edition just stopping at gas stations or and stuff. I just laugh and say you don't see a for sale sign do you? Almost 300,000 and still running womderful
I remember when that Previa came out (as the mighty Tarago here in Oz). It was seen as something of an utter spaceship when it hit, as the model or replaced was just a commercial van with seats.
Completely unnecessary, but lots of fun and nostalgia. I had a Previa back in the late 90s and I miss it! It was an LE AWD S/C. Would go anywhere in the snow.
That Previa looks a lot smaller than I remember, when it first came out it was a premium looking vehicle. Those swivel seats are pretty cool. My dad had the dustbuster, it was terrible and the interior was even worse. My dad bought it because we lived in small town and GM dealer was family friend.
Nice video. I am kinda thinking of a Previa. My daily driver is currently a JDM Isuzu Elf motor home haha so I need something else to drive to work everyday. I landed on your page after watching you 1st gen Tacoma video and still thinking one of those might be best! Thanks for the content subscribed and looking forward to more videos.
One issue I believe is that consumerism is worse now than it was in the 90s. So no longer can you buy a vehicle simply because it fits your needs but it has to look " cool". We bought a 2013 Grand caravan brand new. And although it may not be cool it's certainly has a million uses. Although I do have a pickup truck, the van can definitely be used as one with the stow and go and just flip the seats down. Have five kids no problem. Bring the dog too. Small trailer under 4,000 lbs hook it up. Sadly at 151,000 mi it developed transmission issues, and we'll be getting another one. Transmission that is. Oil analysis show that the engine is still in good shape everything else is held up amazingly. Here's to another 151,000. Really enjoyed this review!
He forgot to mention in the Previs, you can fully recline the middle seats flat if you remove the head rest and push them forward. This gives you all the back two rows as a flat bed.
Since you now sold your 85 Galant, it would be cool to see a later one on the channel. The 93-97 Galant „e50“ generation is so rare these days, it would be so cool to see one here. They are even rarer then the previous generation.
Over in fl they everywhere tbh all of them rusted asf and are either red or blue but you got your few green or tan ones, black ones are pretty “rare” but yeah man check Florida, fr they everywhere my boi has a 97’ and my neighbor has another one that looks sleeker with a less aggressive body style. Idk it could be a 93-99’ it looks similar to the 97’...long story short if u want one look over in Florida lol.
The 1995 Honda Odyssey was technically the first 4 door minivan. The rear doors were conventional and not sliding doors, but it had 4 doors nonetheless. And it was considered a minivan and not a wagon. The Caravan would have been the first minivan to have 2 sliding doors in the rear and I believe that was in 1996. Also, I love your channel and keep up the great work. I would have your car collection if I could.
I have a supercharge Previa, besides it is super reliable, it is fast enough for a van. This Previa never got me stranded for all the decades I have owned it. I do take it for maintenance and there were many parts that were replaced because it is old and most of the time I opted to wait for another month to save further money. This hardly breakdown. I love this van.
We get the new Estima (previa) here. Comes in a 2.4l 4cylinder or 3.5l V6. The 2.4 hybrid AWD gets approx 42mpg in your lingo. Plus it’s a nice looking ride.
Yeah no one is ever going to stop look at a sienna and say hey that thing is cool happens to me in the previa everyday😂the sienna just isn't cool cuz everyone and there grandma drives one😂
And, you're not Doug DeMuro (thank god), so don't worry about a logical score system. I like these old vs new. I'm trying to think of one you could do with your current stable. Maybe modern mustang vs your Probe (which the 1st gen was supposed to replace the 'stang.
I thought the stupid grill was the worst part of the new Sienna, but that "Bridge" is AWFUL. Big plus of minivans is the ability to move unimpeded from front to back inside the van, the "Bridge" ruins that flexibility. I'll take 10 Previas instead, please.
Hi can you post a video and do an epic showdown that nobody else has done on the previa versus the sienna Toyota I've been looking all over the internet for comparison of the both can you please post one for me thank you A loyal subscriber
I’ll be renting a minivan on Wednesday to move a mattress. I’m actually thinking of giving the Toyota sienna a go , I was thinking of the Honda odyssey
The Previa has an undeniable Syd Mead retro-futuristic quality to it that would look ideal in any cyberpunk film along with many 80s cars and the late 90's Isuzu VX.
I always liked the Previa. It always looked good in the full-page ads on the back cover of National Geographic Magizine. The mid-engine design was cool but, I did not like the poor accessibility of the engine placement below the floor and rear wheel drive on a mini-van was a negative, if you did not have all-wheel drive. The low center of gravity was good. Last week, I purchased a used 2006 Toyota Sienna XLE, with low miles, to replace our 2001 Honda Odyssey EX, with high miles.
*sees your bit on asking for cars to film at the end* If you're ever up in Washington, I'll get you cars to film. I'll go mobster to get them if I have to. :D
How comfortable are the back seats on the Sienna? Do they recline fully like in the Previa? I'll have a carful of totally sleeping family all reclined on car trips in the Previa.
I don't like how they tried to make the new Sienna look like a crossover instead of a minivan. The last gen SE with the dark rims and smoked lights was the best looking one. And with the 3.5L 301hp V6 it was a monster.
EV is the perfect architecture to bring back the Previa! You're right, it looks better than the current Sienna. Sure the details are dated but modernized, it would be a fantastic ID Buzz competitor!
Unnecessary? I am comparing these right now! I have a 1997 AWD Previa that I know can't last forever, and I'm trying to find a new minivan I'll like. Can't test drive because no dealers have any where I live. My previa has 340K miles. Still love it, family wants me to get another car.
I have a ‘93 Previa with 275K miles. Glad to know that it can go at least another 50 K or maybe more. It still runs good on its original engine. The body is still great with no rust at all.
Regarding the scoring, he could have easily substituted "DougScore" with "Whose Line is it Anyway?" in terms of being arbitrary and useless. That said, I'd trust Ethan's scoring over a Doug Score anyday.
Quite biased... haha... but great video. I love vans. Our Odyssey is perfect for our larger than average fam. Impresses the 'cool' couples when they get in the captains chairs in the "back".
You'd probably like my JDM Estima Spec G, way more options than your US Previa, moon roof, supercharged, independent rear suspension, power curtains, factory reverse camera ( in a 98 model car) its a cool van
I loved this totally necessary comparison. The Previa does look newer, and gorgeous. In fact, it deserved to win by several more points,as some more impressive features went uncredited. 1)There is a 30 year difference in the production of these vehicles, (since you could buy your first Previa in 1990&1/2) That should add extra points, since it shows even more advanced innovation than the 25 years mistakenly quoted in the video. 2) the trim lines are not equivalent : a 30-year old base line model v. brand-new, top of the line extravaganza. More points ought to be allotted to the Previa for its fancier LE package, which was available, though not present on the comparison car. 3) Re: durability, Most of the Previas I have access to personally have nearer a quarter million mikes on their odometers, rather than the paltry 180- something on the featured vehicle, so way more durable than, well, any other same age car on the road. Way more. Previa wins in a LANDSLIDE, not one point. Disclaimer: writer’s evaluation is not represented to be without bias. Previa wins any contest because, uh, well, it is unbeatable.
Do you think the Previa share Camrys headlights and tail lights of that same era? And If you come across a Lumina APV/silhouette/Transport that would be cool lol.
You should have had a "which one would you rather be in for a low-speed fender bender?" category. A 1mph bumper tap in the in the Sienna will set you back several THOUSAND dollars. The Previa? Maybe a little smudge on the black rubbery bumper. I'll take the Previa any day.

Nostalgic styling like the VW Kombi of the 60s.

The Previa AWD, especially the 94 or older ones they had better differential gearing and it does way better off-road than the Sienna could. There’s also a company that makes a lift kit for it. I love the idea of new vs old comparisons. It's cool to see where auto trends have gone in the years and decades between vehicles.
When I drove a Previa daily, it had the smallest turning radius of all my friends’ Soccer-mom rigs (Caravans, Jeep Cherokees.... )
The comparison we've all been waiting for! Finally, we know which van is the better stuffed animal hauler!
Those intro graphics were on point btw
Ethan, The Sienna's 36 mpg is a quantum leap that leaves today's other minivans choking on their exhaust fumes.

I don't like how they tried to make the new Sienna look like a crossover instead of a minivan.
The last gen SE with the dark rims and smoked lights was the best looking one. And with the 3.5L 301hp V6 it was a monster.
The base Previa had a mid-row bench that could be removed without tools. I learned how to drive in a 91.
EV is the perfect architecture to bring back the Previa! You're right, it looks better than the current Sienna. Sure the details are dated but modernized, it would be a fantastic ID Buzz competitor!
I like both of them.
i like the awd previa
The previa was the minivan directly behind the Toyota LE Van.. On that platform the engine was under the seat as well.
I like the big grills on the newer Toyotas/Lexus
Doesn't the Previa's engine location create a lower center of gravity than the Sienna and therefore better cornering?
Just got a 95 burgundy previa with the All-Trac and supercharger best investment of my life 257,122 miles and starts like no problem lol
Maybe its time for Toyota to take the old Previa design and combine it with the superior features of the Sienna!
Previas will last 400k easy. And a previa is much easyer to work on than a front wd nowadays.
Can you battle a 2021 lexus ES vs a 2001 lexus ES please N future thanks :)
I had three previa s, now I own the sienna. My only complaint against the AWD of the Previa; the wheels felt hot from friction.
love my 91 previa
I like the look of the Privia
*Hahahah🤣🤣🤣🤣*
*The descriptions you give when talking about them cars are SUPER hilarious yet smart too. 🤣🤣🤣*
Regarding the scoring, he could have easily substituted "DougScore" with "Whose Line is it Anyway?" in terms of being arbitrary and useless. That said, I'd trust Ethan's scoring over a Doug Score anyday.
I'll buy your Previa 🤷♂️ I miss mine every day and need one back in my life
Advantage Previa!
Flat back floor with no nooks an crannies for dirt to fall into.
Very good video
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I've had both vans and can happily say the Previa out does the Sienna in reliability by a country mile
Quite biased... haha... but great video. I love vans. Our Odyssey is perfect for our larger than average fam. Impresses the 'cool' couples when they get in the captains chairs in the "back".
MY mechanic has a 2012 SIENNA and a 94 Previa offered both going to pick the Previa guess I am old fashionend
I want the Previa but imported so an esteem with 5 speed manual diesel ⛽ 🤞
You should buy a (1991-1994) First generation Ford Explorer I'd love to see it on the channel!
You'd probably like my JDM Estima Spec G, way more options than your US Previa, moon roof, supercharged, independent rear suspension, power curtains, factory reverse camera ( in a 98 model car) its a cool van
Unnecessary? Maybe. But entertaining from start to finish.
I loved this totally necessary comparison.
The Previa does look newer, and gorgeous.
In fact, it deserved to win by several more points,as some more impressive features went uncredited.
1)There is a 30 year difference in the production of these vehicles, (since you could buy your first Previa in 1990&1/2)
That should add extra points, since it shows even more advanced innovation than the 25 years mistakenly quoted in the video.
I miss my previa : (
i have a sienna i thik they should replace the grill with something like the front of the lexus rz450e at least something similar
Absolutely necessary 🤣
What is price of the previa, would like to buy it. Greetings from the Netherlands
Please I've been in the market forever how much for the Previa?
Toyota's are built to last. They are very well built which is why you still see allot of old Toyota's on the road
I like the Previa
Do you think the Previa share Camrys headlights and tail lights of that same era? And If you come across a Lumina APV/silhouette/Transport that would be cool lol.
They look similar but not the same. Lumina APV would be a rad find!
You should have had a "which one would you rather be in for a low-speed fender bender?" category.
A 1mph bumper tap in the in the Sienna will set you back several THOUSAND dollars. The Previa? Maybe a little smudge on the black rubbery bumper.
I'll take the Previa any day.
Perfect!!! 10 for Previa!!!
The walk-through from the front to the back is really important. Ask Lee Iacocca, oh never mind he’s dead.
