I’ve lived in West Farms my whole life and I would literally sit at my window in my bedroom and watch the trains come around that curve for hours. Man I miss those Redbirds
Am I the only one who didn’t want this to end? Lol! I was 18 that day and preparing to go to the military that day (i went in a few days later). The Redbirds were a regular part of my life using the 2,4 & 5 Trains & it’s great to relive the memories of yesterday. I love & enjoy the equipment we have now but nothing compares to the Redbirds. ❤️❤️❤️
I was born only a decade ago but, a few years ago I seen a video of multiple R33s pass by and it was beautiful! The colors made the train unique, and I really have nothing to say because it was my favorite train and it still is! The Redbirds are really beautiful and unique and the Bluebird was a scene that was my favorite.
I was 7yo at the time of this, but been a rail fan since birth, moms used to collect the subway maps for me when they updated them, I lived up the block from 174st station and just loved listening to them pass by
The Redbirds! Of the IRT's various color schemes of the cars of this era, the Gunn-red color scheme were the best IMHO. West Farms Sq-E Tremont Av was my place to get off back then. (2) and (5) with Bronx Thru Express bypassing. (Yeah, I didn't mind if the 5 switched express at the last minute. Being Deaf, it's hard to catch the last minute announcement 🤣 Didn't mind getting off at E 180 and going back one stop 😆)
I use to live in the Bronx not far from the Baychester station on the 5 line back then in the 1980s the Trains were white and then my favorite Redbirds came along I miss these Trains but they were pretty old they had to retire and now we got the silver trains out.
It’s been a lot of years of these old cars that has been into great overhaul programs as these cars repainted in special washable paint of dark Tuscan Robin Red and nick nicknamed Redbirds, All car groups of R26/28/29/33/36s that received their rebuilds must last a lifetime!
I can believe it's been 20 years since the redbirds retired Sadly, I didn't get a chance to ride on one of those records when I was a kid. Or maybe my mom could actually give me a lot of details on what happened 20 years ago. Update: In 2003 I took the 4 train redbird for 125th and Lexington to Borough Hall & Joralemon st in Brooklyn since my mom had an appointment to go to then I saw a r62 (4) r142 (4) redbird (5) Borough Hall Station (2) (3) (4) (5) (M) (N) (R) (W)

What a waste of money shipping off these Redbird cars to be dumped in the ocean of reefing including other car groups been repainted, should have been saved too!
By 1999 to 2003 unfortunately this retirement of replacement of Redbirds with high tech train car groups of R142/&142A cars which they have been having issues and it’s still not 100% acceptable, 20 sets of red bird subway cars could have been saved for emergency uses for the 2,& 5 trains including the 4, 6& 7 trains too, there has no extended yard built in yet at all! There’s future solutions of changes soon too!

5:31 Thats a vignelli 1978 Route sign on that 5 train notice the 5 bullet is gray!!!
