- In this very rare view taken from the pedestrian overpass on August 6, 2001, we see 149th St-Grand Concourse (Mott Ave.) during a transitional period when new R142's were arriving and replacing the Redbirds on the 2 Seventh Ave line. At this time, the 2 line still operated Redbirds alongside with the new R142's that would soon replace them. The number 5 Dyre Ave line was still exclusively Redbird territory. All this would change within the next two years as new R142's from Bombardier and R142A's from Kawasaki would be added to the fleet, allowing the retirement of the aging Redbird equipment on the ramaining lines. We see new R142's of the 6300 and 6400 series as they enter and leave the station. Next, we see a number 5 Dyre Ave. train with a mixed consist of R26, 28 and 29 series of Redbirds with R26, 7783 on the lead. The 5 trains are sent down Lexington Ave when they leave 149th St through 1-A Loop track which connects with the number 4 Lexington Ave line on the upper level, that criss-crosses over the 2 and 5 lines on the lower level. The 5 train will make one final stop at 138th St-Grand Concourse, Bronx before heading into Manhattan. On it's return trip northbound, number 5 trains will go through 4-A Loop track when they leave 138th St. and turn as they enter the station.Next a southbound 2 train of R33 Redbird equipment is seen entering the station with R33, 8982 on the lead. The 2 Seventh Ave trains head into Manhattan when they leave 149th St. and they connect with the 3 Lenox Ave line before they reach 135th St.
THE STATION: Originally built by the Interborough Rapid Transit System (IRT) in 1905, it was the first subway station built in the Bronx. It was then called Mott Ave. The lower level featured a high arched ceiling, similar to the 168 and 181 St. stations on the number 1 Broadway line. A new tower built in the mid 70's replacing the original tower at the south end of the southbound platform, covers over the ceiling in the middle of the station. However, part of the original arched ceiling can still be seen at the south end of the station. The station also has an upper level of three tracks where the 4 Woodlawn-Jerome Ave lines runs. The 4 line runs down Lexington Ave in Manhattan. The Woodlawn-Jerome Ave. platform criss crosses over the station on the lower level. 149th St. Grand Concourse also had an elevator that connected to the now closed overpass and to the upper level. The station was also popular in the '70s and '80 as a meeting place for graffiti aritists, who would meet at the south end of the northbound platform at a bench dubbed the "writer's bench" to watch the trains pass with their "tags" on them. Today, there are pillars between the northbound and southbound tracks, installed during a major signal project in 2002, on the White Plains line. It now blocks the unobstructed view that was once available. The pneumatic switch machines once heard as they routed the 2 and 5 trains are now silent, replaced by electric machines during the signal project. The station is also slated for a long overdue rehab within the next year.
They should have a day every year with just the redbird trainz that would be cool
back then they look so shiney
They were new at the time
Still (kinda) are with East 180th Yard giving them a nice wash after 25 years
Ah the trains of my youth, I lived in the Bronx for the first 11 years of my life near the Burke Ave (2) train station and I used to ride the Redbirds all the time! The front window was no doubt the best. I like the R142s of today but the Redbirds, man I miss those quite a bit.
Why?
@philithegamer8265 Because he has alot of happy memories of riding on these trains.
I remember these times all too well. I lived right at the next stop heading into the BX. 3rd Avenue -149 St. Stayed at my great grandmother's house, I had a good view watching these Redbirds make their way out of the ground. Memories...
Wow, excellent video! I miss the sounds from those redbirds. Loved those airbrakes!!
The redbirds were seriously on their last legs though. They also didn't have functioning during the summer time. I know because I was there riding the 2, 4 and 5 trains daily. LOL!!!
This is when the Redbirds were running
Thank you, LexAveExp. I appreciate your comments. I will be posting more videos from 149th St. in the near future and thanks for the sub.
When I was little me and my parents took does train to Manhattan man I miss those train good time
Love this stop! The 5 makes a lot of noise leaving and entering the station via the Grand Concourse Curve whereas the 2 leaves and enters swiftly in both directions.
Great video! I remember when the first r142s came out!
Man I miss the redbirds! Those cars were awesome!
Great Vid!
Max Payne 1 vibes right there
Well the station looked pretty back then, why did they cover the dome ceiling?
Nice video, this was one of my favorite spots to watch trains. The other two were 42nd St Grand Central and 14th st Union Sq. Thanks for sharing!
Crazy I think I may have been on one of them trains back than I was always riding the rail and back in 01 I was always running on them 142
Cool!
Hey kmothersil, yes I do have some videos of the Redbirds on the Pelham line in my collection.
By 1995 before and after graduating from High School l remember seeing sets of the R26/28/29 cars from the 2 train then switch over to the 5 train even when these cars start to fall apart they didn’t put any new welding but some did and freshly repainted them, there were like that since the overhaul program began since 1985 to 1987 to be graffiti free R33M of 1986 then by 1988 to 1991 freshly rebuilt by 207 St. overhaul shop then assign to the 5 train, by 1995 most cars assigned to the 2 line, 2 sets went on the 6 line and remaining sets assigned to the 4 as well too by 2001 to 2003 all Redbird cars that had retire too soon should have been remain for another 40 more years too!
I miss the red birds got any videos of those?
man i miss these trains and i will never forget that the day i witness the newer R142A and B tech trains being tested before they went into regular service.
really takes me back to good old nyc subway days
This video was recorded three days after I was born. Pretty neat!
Redbirds! I miss them.
Back then the R142 and R142A were the train of the future now they are 20 yrs Old and are a train of the past😖😔
Great! You have provided important historical documentation. I cannot thank you enough.
Oh this is FANTASTIC!!!!! Excellent Video!!!!
Man i missed those redbird
Awesome and thanks for uploading this one by the way.
Nice!
the city nor the world would never be the same 35 days later.

Jose Javi
except for the R62/R68, Redbirds, and the R142/R188
Jose Javi hell yea
R188 better anyways
5 days before 9/11 though, sick
This is from August 2001 not September that’s a month and 5 days until 9/11
I never liked the r142s i only liked the older trains from both irt and ind/bmt
NONAME 1994 The Redbirds are always going to be my favorite subway cars even though they are not in regular service anymore.
Same. I hate the new stuff. I don't even consider the new stuff trains their just garbage computers like I can never see the 142's, 143's, 160's a and b and 179's as real trains. Only the Redbirds, R32's, R38's, R40M's, R40Slants, R42's and older trains are Real Trains to me
@@redbird1train855 amen to that
NTTs are garbage
Thank you for posting!

Question Transitviews. Did you get videos of redbirds on the Pelham Line?
Thanks, redbirdland5. Yes I do have videos of the redbirds on the Dyre line and I will be posting them.
I never rode the redbirds on the jughandle, but I'm sure the noise was unbearable, especially if the windows were open. Notice at 3:06 the rear rollsign said "Dyre Avenue" because it must have gone around the SF Loop so it was originally at the north end, and I guess the motorman had to change the sign at Eastchester on every weekend run. I noticed because they were mainlines, the internal lights stayed on because they were replaced in the 80s, but it's strange how the external lights blinked.
7 train Redbird car fleet of R36WF cars including R33S fan cars and including R36M cars by 1993 R33m cars on the 7 line of equipment duplicated from the 4 train its must been 2 sets used at that time, We need car companies redevelope in USA too!
8950-8951 are in that consist. They are part of the Redbird Museum train that is at Unionport yard. Awesome video Transitviews.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
RIP REDBIRDS
Darn, I was hoping you'd pan over so I could see where the elevators were.
The elevators would have to be on the uptown tracks. I only point that out because the main entrance would be on the SW corner of 149 St. As the original headhouse-----Mott Avenue Station, had the escalators
Now the R142s have roughly 20 years until retirement
2 years and 5 months before I was born. And also 36 days before the twin towers fell apart
Now those r142’s are so dirty
i miss those cars. oh what a memories. they are truly the best cars.
Damn that was just about one month before 9/11. The world was so different then...
True
R.I.P forgoten overpass
fidgeter
This vid was in 2012
I wish you would of filmed it directly with the rollsigns and people boarding and exiting the train and without editing the video😑
I have a question what year did the R142 came out
2000
@@NYer8301 thank you hope you and your family are safe from the corona viruse
@@jacobcrespo1508 you're welcome! I hope for the same
R142 2 train
Thanks for your comments, DJKosmonaut. Yes, 149th St. is unique among all the NYCT subway stations and I was glad to get the opportunity to film it from the overpass. I got the video that day because there were workers doing work on the overpass and the gate was open for them, so I went up there and captured that moment in time.
Cool!!
R142 Cars 6301-7180 Came Out Since 1999-2003
Great video. That's one of the most interesting and at the same time most terrifying subway station of the NYCTA. The sound of Number 5 screeching up and down those curves is intense. How did you get up to the overpass? They closes that off back in the mid 80s. Anyway, thanks a million for that. Great it has the old Red Birds with the R142s.
Thanks!!
my hears are ringing
20 other sets of Redbird subway cars could have been saved for emergency uses for the the 2 and 5 trains other lines too!
The Redbirds need retirement because THE BRAKES ARE FUCKING LOUD. Why would people miss such crappy trains that have freaking loud brakes, too much squeak on tracks and the rusty red exterior. THIS IS WHY THE REDBIRDS NEEDED RETIREMENT!!
Garcia B Stephan F you
True BUT NEED THE FUCKING REDBIRDS BACK BECAUSE I CANT STAND NEW TECH TRAINS
