Unfortunately this wasn't the best idea the MTA had. The cars deteriorated much faster than expected underwater and most have since collapsed. Partly I think it's because of how many were dumped in the same place at once. They fell on top of each other and couldn't support the weight once the structure began to deteriorate.

Well, that's part of the reason why they're throwing them into the ocean in the first place.
Because they can deteriorate and therefore not cause any long term harm to the planet

As of May of 2011 the mta has ended reefing subway cars because the R62-R160s have more plastics parts so it will cost them alot more to reef and they are not suitable for it so they have ended reefing subway cars the remaining R32s and R42s will get reefed and that will be it.About time no more dumping subway cars into the ocean.

These specific cars are used because they can no longer be mended for human use. A lot of them are very old and have already been fixed up many times. They're pure steel, so eventually they start rusting. Once they begin rusting, they're not safe enough for human use anymore. It would cost more to ship these to a junkyard than they would make off of the scrap metal, so instead, the cars are cleaned and dumped into the ocean so reefs can grow. (cont..)

Eventually, the steel disintegrates, so all that is left is natural reef and fish. Also, this is actually a boost for the economy because MILLIONS of dollars each year go into aquatic tourism activities, and more reefs like these will attract more tourists. Also, more jobs will be needed to accommodate those tourists, AND we'll be saving money by not having to ship these to junk yards for scrap metal. I understand you didn't know all of this, but get your facts straight before you get so angry.

It’s a big waste of money after all these groups of cars were into great overhaul programs of rebuilds as of graffiti free goes on, they have a life time, the cost of overhaul per car are over $100,000 to $300,000! 20 other Redbird subway cars could been saved for emergency uses for the 2 and 5 trains and other IRT lines too!
