This video was edited with Final Cut Pro X
Music in this video was created using the following DAWs:
Reason 12, Cubase Pro 12, MPC Keys 61, MPC One+, MPC Live, MPC Live 2, MPC Live II, MPC Live 2 Retro, MPC X, MPC X Special Edition, MPC Software 2.12.2, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 11, Serato Studio, Fl Studio 21, RC-505 Loop Station, Roland MV-1
I love the fact I can drag and drop my samples from tracklib, or wherever, instead of messing with the thumb drive back n forth. Faster workflow keeps the creativity flowing
I agree and I do that all the time.
Another great feature of using controller mode is there is NO wait time when switching between Fabric sounds!
LOL facts. I'm FL Gang. I'm new to standalone MPC but I'm focused on learning my MPC right now but my ultimate goal is to hybrid it with FL. 🎉
@@Trioptic3D cool. That’s a good mix.
This was the exact video I was looking for!
Excellent Video Bro. This needed to be said and it is true
Thanks
Great video bro. I would love to see a part 2 where you continue the differences. I like your perspective on leave the computer screen off while harnessing the power on the computer inside the MPC. Unless I’m using headphones, I do use my RME audio interface to monitor with my speakers from my MPC output through USB. I’ve been subscribed bro. Let’s goooooo!
I think there are just a lot of myths about using the computer. Standalone is good but most of the reasons people say they want to use standalone are false narratives.
Great video and great points of reference to these facts of modes. Thank you for sharing it!
Very welcome 🙏🏾
Great video and you definitely addressed some of the misnomres in production.
Thanks
✨️Thank you for sharing this GS. It's very insightful, and you covered a lot of topics I was curious about... Have a wonderful day.. blessingsAlways 🙏🏾💙🔥
Welcome!
Thanks for the insight GS!! I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos.
Much love
You're absolutely right
I got my live 2 when it came out in 2020.
Didn’t have a compatible computer at the time.
Discovered controller mode in 2022. I was sleeping on it hard.
A lot of people do honestly.
It’s like Steroids for your MPC.
I use both the MPC screen and the computer software together in controller mode. So much more power.
I do too. This is basically to clear up confusion for people who never use controller mode.
@@GhettoStyles Thanks for the video. It was great. I also notice that I get a lot more audio tracks and can get larger project file sizes in controller mode
@@s.gharavi1614 definitely. Standalone has a track limit
@@GhettoStyles do you know why the file sizes can be so much bigger in controller mode. But I have many projects that are 3GB+ that with in controller mode, but can't load in stand alone. It's like the resources are just way better in controller mode.
@@s.gharavi1614 the resources in controller mode are not dependent on the MPC hardware unit. Most computers (even cheap ones) usually have a better processor and RAM than what the MPC has in standalone (only two MPCs have 4GB of RAM and all the rest have 2GB of ram.
Most computers come with 8 to 16GB of RAM.
My computer has a 10 core processor and 64GB of RAM so I can create projects that are immensely too big for standalone to open very easily.
When you use controller Mode the MPC runs off of what ever RAM and processor the computer has and NOT what is built into the hardware unit. The hardware unit RAM and Processor is bypassed.
Lastly, in controller mode I loose a few of my expansion packs… but, all that said, you made a great video!!!❤
You can still access ALL of your expansion packs with direct browsing even if they don’t show up in the expansion list. Just go to PLACES then your MPC DRIVE then you EXPANSIONS folder. All of your expansions will be there including the ones that don’t show up.
your channel is fire .
Just stopping by to show some love .
Much respect.
Don.
Thanks 🙏🏾
Thank you for all your help Ghetto! Did you read the whole manual for the MPC? You are very knowledgeable and it helps a lot thank you.
This video motivated me to start using the software. It just take more time getting the hang of the the work flow but now I see it’s worth using it because you dont always have to work off the computer screen. Good info.
I have not read the entire manual. Some of it is confusing actually. Just been using these a long time.
@@GhettoStyles true… I was just reading up on non-destructive slice vs pad parameters and it was confusing until I seen a video. I guess I’m a visual learner. Thanks again boss!
@@GhettoStyles your good with this UA-cam stuff, have you ever thought about organizing a beat battle for the MPC community that will be dope?
@@Magnetic1908 I have thought about it. I’m still trying figure out a good fair way to do it.
@@GhettoStyles that will be dope for the MPC community, you will be a good host for something like that. And then may do MPC vs Ableton or FL or even Machine producers. Bring in another dimension of fun and competition to the game. So many people make beat nowaday it with motivate people to be original and try different things.
Maaaaaan I saw this video at the perfect time. My problem with controller mode is that with me being a Logic Pro guy, I would use the MPC software as a plugin in and I HATE that. I don’t think the plugin mode is a good workflow option for me, and I was ready to stick to standalone. Your video makes sense tho, just use the MPC software by itself. You just saved me a big headache bruh, I just hit that subscribe button. Great video!
Yea man. It works as a plugin but in limited capacity. Using the software by itself gives it full run. You can still sync it with Logic and run them both but you could see difficulty if your computer isn’t strong enough to run both at the same time.
Like #61, great title and I was interested in what you have to share. I always appreciate you articulation and breakdown 👏🏽💪🏽 I think that standalone are oranges and software are apples. When I want orange juice I squeezed oranges, when I want Apple juice I squeeze apples. I am fortunate to have many computer screens and devices with screens and do not have a problem with screen time due to me having an actual managed self and managed life. I do not allow screens to manage me 🧐💪🏽✊🏽
I appreciate that
Great stuff, thanks...
Very good video - intelligent and articulate.
Thank you
Salute Grate video very informative and also intuitive addon also unlimited audio and midi tracks 👍🏾🙏🏾🔥
Most definitely. 👍🏾
i guess thats why i like DAWS i love computer and got a MPC mini
Good point well made! Worth noting that newer Macs, like last 2-3 OS releases, aren't great with SOME soundcards. They dropped support for things like the Native Instruments Audio 8, which is annoying. BUT - you can use any PC still. It's just Sonoma and the previous few.
I prefer hardware tho. I use my S3000XL for its 10 outputs - and drive it from the One. Voila. 12 outs - all fired from the MPC via MIDI :)
Great vid man - all of them in fact. You've plugged the knowledge gap for me between Akai samplers and Akai sequencers in no time at all :) Big up!
🙏🏽 thanks
I have both,i start beat on mpc live 2 and finish on mpc daw with mpc studio 🍻
The only reason I'm semi-against controller mode is the fact that I've been a PC nerd for 30+ years and have been producing music
for over 20 years and all 20 of those years have been done sitting at a computer. I honestly had no experience whatsoever when it
came to creating music using hardware. Then I purchased my MPC X 4 years ago and ever since then I've been trying to lean more
into relying on hardware and trying to do away with using the computer. Now of course I'll still use my PC when it comes to things
like final mix downs. Or lately I'll produce a slap on the X and then when it's ready for a piano, or a violin, or some kind of instrument
that I know I don't have or cannot really replicate on my X, I'll bounce out the stems and finish up the project within FL Studio.
However, if it was 100% up to me, I would like to do away with using the computer and use my MPC X as the brain of my entire OP
without the need to even mess with the computer anymore. And I'm a certified computer nerd that's stared at a computer screen
for no less than 70% of every moment of every waking day since I was born in the early 80s! I personally would like to be able to
get the sounds out of Kontakt, Nexus etc. from FL Studio and get them to work on my MPC X in standalone. So far I'm able to get
sounds from FL into my MPC, and can even record patterns and all that. But as soon as I close FL Studio the instrument/sound is
gone. I'm trying to find out how the hell we can record them into the MPC X project permanently? If someone could help me out I'd
greatly appreciate you!
There are a few things you can do. You can bounce those sounds to audio and import them into the MPC as samples or you can use the autosampler to turn those sounds in question into MPC keygroups. Lastly you can run the MPC software (not in standalone) and use Kontakt directly in the MPC as a VST instrument.
Kontakt will not run in standalone. It doesn’t even run in the maschine+ in standalone and they are both made by Native Instruments.
Me too brother
Man it’s funny you dropped this video. I just started back using my Maschine over the last couple days. I always loved using it but wanted a change of pace so I bought the X a few months ago. I only use it in standalone because I have Maschine for the software style workflow. I honestly don’t like the browsing aspect of the X compared to the Maschine.
I agree. I think the MPC still needs a better tagging system.
I have my X hooked up up to my Audio Mixer I like how I can bounce from standalone to Controller mode.
If you have your X hooked up through a mixer it is actually better to record it to the DAW rather than bounce it. If you recut to the DAW you take advantage of the MPC analog signal path.
Good stuff GS, salute
Preach big dog.

@@GhettoStyles why on controller mode I can’t hear the sounds when I use an interface audio? (Focusrite)
@@Talk_Quiet1 you might not have it set correctly. How do you have your audio routed? I use to use mine with focusrite on a 18i8 and an 18i20 gen 2 and 3.
@@GhettoStyles i use a 18i8 4mic, but thx I set it correctly now the problem I have is idk how to do a song with my mpc x like you see when u used FL studio it’s easy cause u can used the pattern I guest for mpc x it’s sequences, but plz can u can 2 video about drums trap how to do it correctly and not already set up, but show when u click on all the pads like kick, 808, snares etc? Also melody and when u finished how u can make and song like an instrumental type beat? I kno that’s a lot, but plz bro I put a lot of money to buy the mpc x 🙏🏿
@@Talk_Quiet1 I kind of do that in most of my beat making videos. All of them aren’t necessarily trap but the process is the same. Sequences are the best way to format beats in the MPC. I use each sequence as a different section of the song. I make the main beat then duplicate it to sequence 2. Then I go back and edit sequence 1 for the intro and keep doing that until it’s finished.
this video helped me a lot thanks my dude!
Glad it helped!
Yo GS. I´m gonna be linking my One to Ableton soon. Hopefully. I hope :D Great video sir!
The integration with ableton is there. I still think it needs a little improvement though.
Ex-so-lent content!
Thank you!
I did notice that wit the Big time producers 😂... but my issue is finding how to get around sound conversion
@@SMEL better audio interfaces. RME Fireface UFX III or Apollo X series or even dedicated converters like the Dangerous Convert AD+. There are many ways to get top notch conversion. They are not usually cheap.
@@GhettoStyles Peace and Love thanks for the response. Yeah, I have an Appollo X, however my issue is when I bounce a plugin instrument from third-party plugiin in controller mode and save the audio in my project on the hardware SD card so I can use in stand alone, I lose alot of quality in that bounce down. Should I bounce out on the computer instead? My ultimate goal is take the MPC Project and record back in live to Pro Tools through the MPC hardware outs (love dat sound) through my apollo interface (sometimes some other sauce before hitting the appollo).
@@SMEL if you have an Apollo I would definitely go through that. You can connect the Apollo directly to the MPC and use the Apollo as the MPC interface or you can put the MPC in controller mode and select the Apollo as the interface. You could also be losing quality depending on your bounce settings. Use a higher sample rate and bit rate where possible.
@@GhettoStyles Oh my! thanks!

Facts!!!!
This jawn was very VERY informative! Can you use Serato Sample as a 3rd party plug in with the MPC software?🙏🏾✊🏾💚
100% I made a video doing that but never put it out.
Not in standalone mode tho... Only controller mode you can use third party VSTs
Facts !

I’m true stand alone cause I’m mostly portable, but since Serato sample update I’ve been on controller mode more.
That Serato is hard!
Same that serato sample update is flames
Please do a video on how you use your MPC hooked up to an Apollo. I never even thought of using my Apollo with my MPC Live 2

Computer using MPC software all day for me 👍🏽
Same here!
Dope Video !!
Thanks!
Great video. So far I have mostly use standalone, but your arguments are all sound and I feel like a dummy 🙂
Just a question: If I have a project created in controller mode, it lives on the PC, right?
So what's the best way to manage my project so I can still use a project originally created in controller mode, in the standalone mode?
Is it even compatible in the first place, when using e.g. some of the advanced sound processing options from controller mode? Will projects break altogether or not sound the same when used in standalone mode?
Thanks for the tips!
There are some nuances there. I will use myself as an example.
I use controller mode most of the time. I also have 2TB SSD storage installed inside of my MPCs.
Whether I am in controller mode or standalone I save all of my projects on the SSDs installed inside my MPCs. This means the projects “lives” inside the MPC at all times.
Even is you use the higher quality in controller mode if you happen to switch to standalone it will automatically switch to the maximum that standalone can handle but it is still going to be compatible.
The possible issues you could run into are the following: 1.) it is possible to create a project in standalone that exceeds the RAM and processor capabilities of standalone so that particular project won’t open in standalone.
2.) if you use 3rd party plugins in controller mode like FabFilter ProQ 3 or any plugin that does not come built in the MPC those plugins will be unavailable in standalone. The project will still open but you will see an error for missing plugins.
3.) in standalone the MPC is running the same software in standalone ad the desktop version except it is limited in standalone. Outside of those limitations it is and works 100% the same when using a hardware MPC unit with it.
It’s much more difficult to use with a standard MIDI controller.
As far as sounding the same if you use the MPC as the sound card when using the software it sounds exactly the same to me. Now if you run the MPC through some other hardware or a different Interface depending on the quality of the gear you will notice a difference in sound quality specially if you are using a higher quality interface like an Apollo or a RME.
If you’re using a Scarlett 2i2 or some other low grade interface it could sound close to the same or possibly worse.
It's gonna be controller mode until akai hurries the hell up and gives us stems in standalone. I paid the 9.99...but can still only use the function when in controller mode
It could be sometime soon but there definitely isn’t a timeline. They might be still working out bugs.
2:59 mostly its because i use standalone for easier jams and lives! Its faster and easier to make giga.
Thank you for info. How about Q links? MIDI assignment from a 3rd party MIDI controller?
@@DorinJacota I talk about that in this video. It is for the MPK Mini Play but it’s the same to assign and MIDI controller. Also many MIDI controllers already have default mapping you can select from the built in list.
ua-cam.com/video/VzR0z9zPmEU/v-deo.html
I really appreciate what you shared today. I will give controller mode more use. However(I hope I’m wrong)when you use controller mode you are using the Akai sample packs from your computer. You don’t have access to the sample packs(if they are different)from Akai Live 2. When you disconnect from the computer the music you created resides in the computer and not on the Live 2. I welcome being wrong so I can use all my Akai sample packs. Also it has been a while since I used controller mode. 😒
You absolutely have access to ALL OF YOUR SAMPLE PACKS as long as they are not stored on the built in internal storage. Otherwise when you are in the browser you go to places and select your storage location and everything will be there. Akai sample packs and any other sample packs you might have.
Yeah some of them are on my computer alone and not mpc packs. On another positive I like how the q links are available to manipulate the software.
DOPE. Thanx. How can I start from there and smoothly bounce back and forth to my daw
If your computer can handle it you could have the DAW and the MPC open at the same time. You can also run the MPC as a VST.
😲3:24🤛🏽
Hey...is it possible you can do a video on the mpc Renaissance because it seems to me we don't really need to spend money on expensive hardware for people on a budget...please reply...
I don’t have a REN to do a demo but it works very similar to the X in controller mode outside of the screen.
I think that was what I wanted to hear....🤔
If I had an MPC X I would use controller mode way more
💥Booom this a banger! Liked #63
Thanks
Hey... Thanks I wasn't aware the MPC gains additional features by connecting controller mode. Question: when I save my project does it save to my MPC disk or to the computer disk?
I genuinely find the software unintuitive, slow, buggy and sometimes demotivating. I often regret upgrading from the 2nd generation MPC's to this new generation, as they 2nd gen's got straight to the point. Now I have to navigate multiple menus to do something I used to do in less. So I only use controller mode to transfer files nothing more... Gonna research what other features are enabled when connected. Thanks.
The software experience does vary depending on your computer. Almost any computer off the shelf today is faster than every current MPC.
Using the software by itself can be counterintuitive as you said but if you use the software with a current generation MPC, the MPC works exactly the same without you ever having to look at the computer.
As far as saving files/projects/beats it works the same as Standalone. You select the location you want and save. As an example I have a 2TB SSD installed inside my MPC. I can save to the MPC SSD or to the computer SSD in controller mode or an SD Card if I want. It’s the same just with more options.
@@GhettoStyles Thanks for the reply... So I can save an ongoing project etc. (except with 3rd party plugins) to my MPC storage, then disconnect and continue away from the computer? .... Let me go try this now.
@@okbrown Yes but if you do use third party plugins or instruments they will be unavailable in standalone unless you bounce that sound to a sample or process the effect into the audio.
@@okbrown on the same note you can open any standalone project in controller mode in full.
Did some testing and the workflow would be to use always use the storage on the MPC (providing you have an SSD a SD storage said device) in both controller and standalone so your not disjointed between various forms of creativity.
This was a good video to stumble on as I would continued believing this was a shit product, because Akai seem to always get it wrong for my generation of Akai users.
Thanks again!
Alesis vi25 and the mpc 2 software is what I use . 16 mpc style pads and the keys 😊
What I still don’t under stand is with the Renaissance plugged midi into the 61 in stand alone the parts nor q links are mapped. And with 61 in controller mode and the ren hooked up in software you can’t use both at the same time. You have to use the keys on the 61 save shut off the 61 reload project with the ren on to do the drum. I WILL BE THE FIRST to admit the pads on the 61 are lacking, there not the same. And I’ve used my 61 once until today and have had it over a year I made 4 sequences and saved it. Today couldn’t find it a year later. Still not fully familiar with it as I was disappointed with the lack of compatibility with there own brands and kind of push it to the said, I couldn’t find it on computer itself, what is it set to save too on a factory preset. I do have external but it’s not on there either lol
Actually I have that same complaint. I was hoping the key 61 and the X could work together but they only allow one unit at a time. You can still actually use it like that but whichever device says looking for computer will only have partial functionality. I don’t like that aspect at all.
It seems like when u in controller mode it’s a lil buggy at times and I experienced crashes but in standalone it’s smooth sail just my opinion or maybe the new update fixed all that but I kinda stayed away cause of them issues and one time I was playing a beat and the sound cut off but in standalone it was Gucci
I have experienced crashes in standalone and controller mode but it has gotten much better with updates. I have a video on here where I was making a beat in standalone and it crashed right before I saved it.
ua-cam.com/video/Jt19iftqNnE/v-deo.html
Yeah Akai needs to fix the software because it would randomly crash on me whenever I use a lot of VSTs
St8 facts with my mpc key 61 i gots to be in controller mode I will lose my mind just in standalone lbvs!!!!!
Same.
Why do we care how other people use their MPCs though?
They can use them however they want just trying to answer a bunch of questions I get almost continually.
ghetto be talking stupid shit! @@GhettoStyles
I’m not able to preview or load my Splice samples in controller mode. Slice is setup on my SSD drive.
I will look at mine when I get a chance and I will get back to you. You can also use the desktop splice app by the way but will get back with you later.
I might need a bit more info. I'm not seeing an issue with Splice but I might be doing something different than you. I know in STANDALONE when you hit BROWSE and tap CONTENT you see the Splice icon at the bottom right. In CONTROLLER MODE you see a icon that says DEMOS in that same place. However that does not mean you cannot preview or load Splice samples. In CONTROLLER MODE in BROWSE you go to PLACES then to your internal SSD then to the folder named SPLICE. All of your samples can be previewed and loaded there. In addition to that as I said before there is also a free desktop splice app that you can use and also set to your MPC SSD like I have.
Does Fabric XL work in controller mode or only in standalone mode?
It works in both. You can activate it on up to three devices. The computer will act as a second device.
Yo.
Could you say something about latency in controller mode? Can you hear the difference in sound delay when Im playing pads between standalone and controller mode?
Personally I cannot hear a difference at all. In controller mode you can actually go in and set your latency as high or as low as you want it to be. Performance will vary depending on how good your computer is but most computers will still outperform the MPC in standalone. I have had latency as low as 8ms which is basically nothing. I have also been able to run at around 56ms that was doable for me. If your computer starts struggling with an extremely low latency it will snap crackle and pop. On big projects I sometimes make the beat or session in low latency then raise the latency for mixing. Low latency is really only necessary for performance and recording.
That’s on you bro. I never had latency on controller mode
Standalone mode sounds better… the quality
That is absolutely false. The truth is you can raise the quality far beyond standalone in controller mode.
Everytime I try to use controller mode I run into issues
What issues is it?
@@GhettoStyles when I go to arrange the song in song mode and I mute an instrument for one track it mute it for all the other sequences I don’t have this problem in standalone mode
@@yayyhy sorry I'm just seeing the reply. Now if you are in controller mode and you mute per track it definitely works the same in controller mode unless you are clicking it in on the software. If you are using the actual MPC to do it then it is 100% the same. If you are doing it through the software it behaves as you said unless you change the mutes in the track list view. When I am doing that process I am using the hardware unit to set my track mutes per sequence. I do it all the time.
@@GhettoStyles ok thank u

It's usually very easy. Some windows users have settings activated that block the MPC Driver. Also check your graphics card update.
Gonna end up in the computer anyway
Right.
I use mpc 2 on my computer but bought a used mpc one. The mpc one came with a lot of akai sample pack. Is there a way to load them to my mpc 2?
if it is saved on a SD card you can load it into the software. If it is in the built in storage of the MPC One you can still get it but it is a bit more difficult because the computer doesn't recognize the built in storage when it is connected. Any connected storage like SD cards, flash drives, or external hard drives will be recognized by the computer though.
