- The first time I heard this song it spoke to me like no song I have ever heard. It is called Chi Mi Na Morbheanna, and is sung here by Tania Opland. My introduction to this song was a live performance at a small bar in Fairbanks, Alaska. She was performing in the area for the first time in 7 years; as she was from just outside of Fairbanks and had been away traveling. It is sung in Scottish Gaelic. Even before I read the translation for the first time, I knew what she was singing about. The photos in the slide show are from Iceland. Hope you enjoy it.
My parents and friends sang this at every gathering with or without fiddle and piano. They would slap one knee or sometimes bang one foot down and *rock from side to side if sitting in a row. It was sung at a faster tempo with more rousing energy and I find that the strength of the voice counter-acted the melancholy. The feeling was more like pride than sadness or maybe a bit of both. Thanks for posting this. A gorgeous song.
O chi, chi mi na morbheanna
O chi, chi mi na corrbheanna
O chi, chi mi na coireachan
Chi mi na sgoran fo cheo.
Chi mi gun dail an t-aite 's an d'rugadh mi
Cuirear orm failt' 's a' chanain a thuigeas mi
Gheibh mi ann aoidh abus gradh 'n uair ruigeam
Nach reicinn air thunnaichean oir.
Chorus
Chi mi ann coilltean, chi mi ann doireachan
Chi mi ann maghan bana is toraiche
Chi mi na feidh air lar nan coireachan
Falaicht' an trusgan de cheo.
Chorus
Beanntaichean arda is aillidh leacainnean
Sluagh ann an comhnuidh is coire cleachdainnean
'S aotrom mo cheum a' leum g'am faicinn
Is fanaidh mi tacan le deoin.

wonderful song and vid my friend!! th-up!!
Very great video.
Sorry if I'm late to the party on this video, but I've been looking for a traditional Gaelic song to sing for a male vocal solo at a competition. Would anyone know where to find an arrangement of this song with piano accompaniment and vocals (preferably in the same key as this one)?
No idea, I have never seen that movie. Though I think I recall hearing something about part of it being filmed in Iceland.
I really need you to add the lyrics in Gaelic so I can learn it easier. :)
Some of the accenting is off (she's probably not native to the Gadhlig) but it is otherwise superbly done. The name in English is "I Shall See the Big Mountains" ordinarily dystranslated to "Mist Covered Mountains".
Robert Burns As I mentioned in the description, she is from Alaska. Thanks for the translation.
