Quite a few people seem to have strong feelings about my comment regarding the focus lever on this camera, so I 've created a quick video explaining it in further depth. Please watch before joining the trench warfare below. ua-cam.com/video/ZyEcwnJr1ao/v-deo.html
You do such a good job with this type of video. A real world, practical review, this truly gives people an idea of what the user experience will be like, not just a list of specs.
I have an XT5 and its factory default is as you describe for the XT-4. I can move the focus point around with the joystick and tap it to re-center. If you push and hold the joystick, it will pull a menu up to define what pushing the joystick does. Hit Reset to Center and you are good to go.
No need to be the quickest to reviews, Dylan, this is really good stuff! ...which we often don't get from the quicker ones to it. And yes, please, to in-camera 65:24 ratio. By my quick and dirty algebra, it still gives 22MP!
This is the best XT5 review on UA-cam and I have watched all of them. As a XT5 user I can confirm all your mentioned points. Especially AF accuracy and resolution. I use several systems and the 40MP is the main reason why I use other brands more often. Give us a pixel binning feature like in the Leica Q3. No crop. Just a 24MP option. Better low light performance, smaller file size. Thank you again for this excellent review.
Indeed! This is actually the reason I now use X-H2S bodies. I really don't like them, but the resolution makes them better for my work. Pixel binning seems to be a feature that every other brand is able to offer in their high megapixel bodies, but Fujifilm seems to flat out refuse. Originally, I thought it might have been some limitation because of the X-Trans system, but they don't offer it in their Bayer array GFX system either, so maybe the engineers just don't see the need. A shame indeed.
Hi Dylan, Thanks for yet another awesome review. The slideshow proves once again that you are, to me at least, one of the best content creators on YT. I just bought my XT5 and so far I’m very happy with it. I haven’t dwelled enough yet in the menus and the customization, but your suggestions to Fujifilm seem very reasonable (who indeed needs a dedicated algorithm to make the focus on trains?) especially the one regarding the implementation of the 65:24 ratio in the X series which would be a must! At some point I even fathomed the idea of investing in the GFX system for it, but being a simple hobbyist, it would be ludicrous… I know you’re really not into post processing tutorials, but you are obviously so good at it that it would be awesome to see more content on this topic from you. Best regards from France !
Really insightful review that adds great points to the broader discussion. Indeed, it disappoints me that some of these points are not made in other reviews. Many thanks! And I hope Fuji were listening.
Very enjoyable video Dylan! I just got an X-T4 at a great price and watching your review made me feel better about my decision. I’m spending time practicing focusing (and working as a full time photo editor) and I agree: focus accuracy is more important than speed. I hope Fuji listens and brings improvements to as many X-T models as possible.
Your reviews deserve praise. It’s different from other youtubers, and it gets to those details only true photographers give weight to. Thanks for that dear. From Tunisia with love.
Great video and as a long term 1 X-T5 owner myself I agree with all you observations. Yes please to 65:24. Yes please to returning to the old focus stick behaviour. And one further thing - why do the custom modes now affect both film sims and autofocus behaviours? If you only shoot raws it may not be an issue but a huge number of Fuji shooters love film recipes. This is a unique differentiator of Fujifilm and something a rich community has mobilised around. In earlier cameras you could set a visual style without it affecting the behaviour of the camera. With the X-T5 if I now use a custom mode to set a film recipe it changes not only the look of the image but also the behaviour of things like autofocus. Why? I should be able to change recipe without affecting camera operation. A big misstep for no obvious benefit
Interesting! I've seen these recipe communities around with all sorts of interesting sets of adjustments to jpeg files. As a raw shooter, I would love to see the whole camera's operation be able to be saved in a custom setting, but that might really affect a lot of people, as you say! Perhaps there's a way to create a separation for just jpeg recipies, but allow customisation of the rest of the camera in another mode. Hopefully, Fujifilm will pay attention to this!
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer I’m a raw+jpeg guy myself - fundamentally I process all my taws but one of the things I love about Fuji is that I can share instantly from the camera in so many ways, with a look which is 80-90% of what I want. This seems to be a growing trend and an area where Fuji has a real advantage over other camera manufacturers. I’d love them to lean in to that even more. Think about all the YT influencers who sell Lightroom present packs - what if they could sell their looks as film simulations for Fuji cameras? That sort of thing would be a win for consumers but would also be a smart marketing ploy by Fuji to get influencers selling a positive message about Fuji cameras rather than always banging on about the APS-C sensor size. Part of the current viral interest in Fuji comes from the ability to achieve interesting looks in camera. Anything which limits that bustling community is a serious mistake
I agree, the on/off switch on the X-T5 is not nearly as nice as the X-T3. I also prefer the X-T3 dials, the exposure compensation dial especially felt so nice on the X-T3. That said...I'm still glad the X-T5 has dials at all AND the sweet tri-axial screen, unlike the X-H2. (also glad it still has the focus switch on the front)
Great video. Thank you very much. Thinking about buying this X-T5 I watch a lot of videos and yours is the one that has its advantages and small points of improvement most rigorously. I have one last question: the support that interferes with the opening of the battery access door, is it a Peak Design?
thank you, my X-T5 is still on its way to me, so i cant talk about it yet. but all you said sounds very logical. i hope Fuji is following your channel.
Dylan, tks again for an excellent review. The main reason I continue to follow you (and few others) is your honest appraisals delivered without fear or favour (how refreshing!). The main reason I've avoided upgrading from my X-T1 is hearing about the X-T5's auto focus tracking issues, so I'm glad to hear there's been some improvement via firmware updates. Is this an Fujifilm weakness, because my XH-1 was always disappointing when shooting birds in flight or equestrian events?
Thanks for a lot of great details about the Fujifilm XT5. Did not know that the resolution of still images could not be changed. It's new to me. Of course, it can be changed in a photo program, but it is always best if the recording is from the camera for the resolution you have chosen. My next camera will probably not be a Fujifilm XT5. Keeping my Fujifilm XT20 for now.
What a great review! Thank you for this. Great stuff in compact and non nonsense form🙌 Being a XH2 and XH2s user I can relate to 99% of your wishes and issues, so my sentiments exactly! FUJIFILM… listen to this wonderfully honest photographer!
Great and concise video, as always. I updated my PC hardware from a 12 to the high end 16 core Ryzen 9 with an high speed M2 ssd and +16 GB RAM + 16 TB HDDs to compensate the bigger file sizes (XH2, cf express only, Capture One). No performance issues anymore. A still annoying issue: eye AF / tracking doesn't work, if there are many faces around. Had no AF accuracy issues (XH2, XH2s)(XT5 is no option for me, too slow and complicated setup changes, much worse ergonomics and worse performance).
The XT5 is my main work stills camera. My made in Japan XT3 is my edc camera. The quality of the XT3 is better, but the XT5 is fine compared to other brands. If only Fuji would get the mix of the features right for the XPro series, and increase production of everything that's constantly out of stock these days, they would be cruising. As it is they grew 2% worldwide market share last year and that's huge considering most of the hot cameras were our of stock and they don't even make a FF. The top left tile on the Q menu is where you access 7 custom modes which make the camera super quick to change settings on. And you get 7 custom modes in video mode too for a total of 14 separate shooting presets, 7 more than the XH2or S offer. If you don't use the preset modes, you're missing out on a very powerful feature of the XT5.
Thanks for this video. I much prefer waiting for a review from a real working photographer rather than the usual “we used it for 2 hours” first looks than most camera channels do. Out of curiosity, are there any other Fuji channels you recommend?
Only if you set it to that function specifically. On all other bodies, a single tap would enter "focus point editing" mode and allow you to either reset it or change the size. The X-T5 now separates those functions. Sorry for the unclear explanation!
Concise and straight to the point as always, Dylan. I've found out about you through your Tattoos of Asia photos, some of which are taken in my country, Myanmar. And I have to say, you've become one of my favorite photographers and reviewers since then. I do hope you had a fantastic time in Myanmar, and I'm sending you all the love and support.
Thank you so much! Myanmar is one of my favourite places on earth and I'm saddened for the situation right now. I really love the perseverance of the Myanmar peoples and hope to see a return to civilised governance and a return of the land to the peoples.
I'm 95% sure I can double tap the joystick to recentre the focus point. I don't have my camera on me, but I can see page 87 of the manual shows you how to press the joystick to "select centre focus point". Mine is fitted with a Small Rig L Bracket that would solve two of your issues at once - giving you a bigger grip and a tripod slide that doesn't block the battery hatch.
Thanks for the heads up on the bad points about the X-T5 Dylan. I'm just deciding what to go for X-T4 or 5. I think the X-T4 will be for me and serve me better. Still not sure about the flippy screen, but I'll probably put up with that rather than have all the other bits you mention on the X-T5 that don't sound too ideal to me.
Hi Dylan, excellent review, thank you! You really touched on a lot of valid points I am also excited about or slightly annoyed 🙂. Overall I really love the X-T5 though, coming from the T-2 and the T3. I am more of an enthusiastic hobbyist not using the camera for day-to-day pro-work. As I skipped the T-4, the Ibis (plus battery life) is a huge improvement I really like. The Ibis is great for landscape shots while hiking for me as it makes often a tripod use obsolete. I have a ‚small rig’ L-bracket all the time attached to the X-T5, which gives me a better grip while having the battery port accessible all the time. I’d say that I also do not really need the high resolution, but it’s nice to have and great for cropping e.g. into 16:9 in landscape . Let‘s hope we get some Kaizen on some of the points you mentioned.
When a hybrid photographer is taking pictures in a wedding they might be thinking do I have enough space for capture a video clip. So having a video capacity displayed while taking pictures was one of the most requested and kudos to Fujifilm for implementing that. Quick menu left tile was the same as well. Some of the features and decisions that Fuji made to keep this camera small are commendable like taking out the option for battery grip, full size hdmi port etc as they make the camera size larger with additional components. It is a portable photography first camera. If someone is seeking full options camera , then X-H2 is the one to go with.
You'll find that it has been updated that the joystick does re-enter mine does so not sure about that. I've had my XT5 for a year. It is now my secondary camera to my GFX camera, but I really love it. I don't think I can really fault it too much what I love about it is quality and at the end of the day that is the most important thing about a camera is the image quality.
Thanks for the detailed Fuji videos and the great content concerning lenses and cameras from and for the Fuji platform. I love the exact summaries you give. I'm a big Fuji fan despite using Nikon most of my time. I used to have a Fuji GF50SII and X-Pro2 until they were stolen including the various XF and GF lenses and I have been able to replace the X-Pro2 with an X-Pro3 and I am still contemplating a GF body for my landscape photography because the resolution is just compelling. I also want to replace the X-Pro3 with either an X-T5 or X.H2 - could I ask you for your opinion here. I gather the lenses for the X-H2 need to be selected based on their fit for the X-H2. Would appreciate your opinion here. I just can't get rid of extensive Nikon gear which runs from F100 and several F lens to D800, D810 and now the Z7II.....
Thanks for watching and sharing all the details about your wants. The 40MP sensor of the T5 or H2 don't NEED any specific lenses. What Fujifilm means with that list is that you will see IMPOROVED resolution by using those lenses. Other lenses will resolve as they always have, but things like chromatic aberration may be a little more prominent with the increased resolution. I'd say don't overthink it. Get the body you want and pair it with any lens that fits the way you shoot. Unless you're zooming in to 100% or printing 80 inch prints to examine under a loupe, it won't matter! Enjoy whatever you end up deciding on!
Press the focus stick and it centers:) Double tap works as well. (Focus lever settings->press->center. As for formatting it avoids mistakes. My Q meunu shows custom setting in the first tile always regardless which focus mode I am in!
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Oh for sure. I can’t wait to get my X-T5 and your review was extremely fair and uplifting about the strong points. I just love seeing a fellow stickler point out the same kinds of thing that will drive me nuts lol
Thank you for the very nice and very lived video. You are among the few who have made a video "in the field" and who have seen the (many) strengths and flaws (few) of this camera. A personal negative judgment of mine is the 40mp sensor and the noise that is created over 1000 iso. It would be really great if you could reduce the sensibility to 24 or 26 mp! The XS10 has less !!! In fact, sometimes I choose to shoot again with the XS10 in low light. I agree with your comments on the video sector, I took the XT5 for its qualities in photography. Good job! Thank you.
Love the review only question that I have is this a great first camera to get back into photography after being out for decades to use for travel and possible Aurora and Milky Way shots please and thank you
Any camera will do well. I'd be more concerned with the lenses that are available for a particular system than the body itself. Start there and work backwards. You'll find what you're looking for.
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer yep I pretty much decided on the XT5 and I'm looking at some primes and one zoom lens for now. Thanks for the input appreciate you
Every issue you've raised, for me, was address when I moved from Fuji to the Lumix S1 series. Sure, the weight sucks but I love it's 64:24 crop mode and being able to turn ibis (and anything else really) on or off from it's Q menu. I do miss the size and weight of Fuji's though.
The amount of times I've considered jumping ship is ridiculous. In the end, the only reason I'm still a Fujifilm user is because of the colours. I really love looking through the viewfinder and working with those colours after the fact. Literally every other blade of grass seems to be greener on the other side. ;)
Haha I alllmost bought a Panasonic S1/S1R because it was DSLR sized, had the tri-axial screen.......and had 65:24 lol. I really wish Fujifilm would just let me have that in the X-T line. 😅
YES. I have two XT5 bodies and the XT4. There is NO reason to kill the double tap to center the AF point, AND the 65:24 XPAN crop would be a wonderful firmware update. I had an XPAN and loved this feature in the GFX50R.
How annoying is it that the bodies operate in a different way for no real reason? 65:24 is a gem. I love it. I use it all the time and would absolutely love to have it in the X series, too! Thanks for watching!
All aspect ratios of the gfx should be available for the x serie (i'm quite partial to 7x6 personally), and I agree with you : having to use the raw+jpeg setting to actually reflect the chosen aspect ratio in the evf/back screen is really irritating. All in all, I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice when opting for fujifilm...design and price let aside, I don't think their hybrid cameras are up to their reputation...
I agree in some respects. I think Fujifilm has lost a lot of its focus on just making great cameras in this recent bid to pull people in from other systems and keep up with thr industry. They do have a business to run, though, and I'm sure they've made these decisions in a calculated way.
Dylan the joystick sounds the same as the one on the X-S10. When I double click it it opens the focus screen so you have to press display button / ok to centre it again……unless it can be changed…
Yuck! So they started it from the X-S bodies as well? I don't use the lower end bodies, so I hadn't seen this creep in yet. Hopefully, it'll get a fix. It's a real pain.
Excellent points! Tired or reviews only glorifying this camera (which I own). Options and full customization are never bad :) this way you can satisfy more customers Thank you for your input!
Thanks, Daniel! It's a great camera but there are still a few things that could be improved from my perspective. Is there anything about it that irks you?
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer The X-T5 features great, modern hardware, while the software is left behind, "in legacy mode". An overhaul is due :) The issue might be that the person in charge of the software is in that position for a long long time, as japanese people usually stick to a single position for life, and he won't give up his philosophy of how should a camera menu and underlying software be.
Very practical and informative review. I have the XH2s and I am getting an XT5. Actually I waited before getting an XT5 just to hear some reviews. And your review answered a lot of my questions. Have you used it as a video camera? How does it compare to a stacked sensor?
Don’t know if it’s just on my camera but half-pressing the shutter is very difficult to accomplish without accidentally tripping the shutter. On my X-T3, there is a much more controllable step between half and full press. I agree with everything else in this review and wish they would address your suggestions. Sadly, I doubt they will.
Thanks for watching. Options are what I'd like to see. It's a grat camera that's just frustrating at times for how I work. Would love to be able to change a few things to suit my workflow better.
I love my X-T5. I've walked 100s of miles with it around London's streets. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd love it to have the same low-light capability as medium format, but I think that's all I'd change to make a big difference. And there's no medium format I'd want to lug around for that.
Great review as always! I can finally use my 56 1.2 again. 🤙 As far as resetting the focus point, I saw a video that shows how to do that instantaneously like the old XT4. I just can’t remember how it was done, but it’s out there. I don’t use the eye/face focus at all, as I prefer shooting without it. Especially when doing street photography. And yes, as a photographer, who doesn’t ever use video, why did they put video selections into the stills selector ? 🙈
I also lament the changing of the photometry/metering switch to the stills/movie switch. I never use video and that took away a control from me. I miss having the extra "record" button as well....because it was the first custom button I always changed to something else lol.
Small correction.. (edit: single) pressing my XT5 joystick DOES reset it to center (as does the method you speak of, as well). This wasn't the case when I purchased the camera, however, so this oversight has either been corrected by a firmware update -- or -- by a menu option I may have stumbled across or selected at some point over the last 10 months. Point being, for reasons I can't specify, this behavior in my XT5 now perfectly matches my XT3. (another edit: EXCEPT when bringing up the focus grid to begin with.. it's now a sideways motion rather than a press, so that motion isn't the same as my XT3.)
Yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. I love being able to bring the focus grid up with a single tap and then reset to centre with another tap. That means I can resize the focus points when I need to as well as reset to centre quickly and easily. Unfortunately, as you say here, it's one or the other on the X-T5.
Thank you for such a rational review. Yes (duh!) to 65:24. That is such a no-brainer for any of the Fuji 40 MP APS-C cameras. And because their native aspect ratio is wider than the GFX series, APS-C users would "lose" a smaller percentage of the original pixels compared to the GFX series. (I really need to do the actual math for this...) As for the X-T5's grip "topography", I also found it to be a little on the small size. I decided to get the Fujifilm base/grips and while that does increase the overall size and weight of the camera, when using lenses like the 8-16mm and 16-55mm things are just a little more secure and comfortable. Comparing the increased size to my former Nikon D500 (my favorite Nikon DSLR), the X-T5 still "wins". Buttons, menus, AF emphasis and all that other stuff you mentioned: Yes. Having had both, I think the X-T4 and the X-E4 both represent a period when Fujifilm was doing too much navel gazing and trying to please too many constituencies -- ending up disappointing more than they needed to. It was no sacrifice to trade away the X-T4 when I got a pair of X-T5s, and my X-E4 (an exercise in dumbing-down a camera) was replaced by an X-E3.
Hi Dylan, I have owned my XT5 for nearly a year now. I find the autofocus is good when it works and terrible when it misses. When out on the street, some days it misses more than focusing accurately. I wonder if others have had similar experiences. Cheers
Excellent review, Dylan as always! I have stayed with the X-T3 as it's an excellent stills camera for landscape and portrait. I have no need for 40MP or all of the fancy Ai stuff being pushed by the camera companies and I much prefer how the X-T3 feels in my hands than the smaller/lighter X-T5. Like you, what I would DEFINITELY appreciate is Fuji adding a simple ratio rule around the RAW image to indicate what the photographer saw when the content was created! I have no idea why this was not included on all of their "photography cameras." Having to shoot a JPG plus a RAW image wastes the photographer's processing time and unnecessarily fills up the hard drive space. Warmest regards from Raleigh, North Carolina USA!
Great, eye opening review. I had hoped to be able to replace my GFX with this camera. I really love the 56mm and yet something about the 110mm GF… is just more compelling. I for one am a rank amateur and am too busy with consulting practice to use gear enough to truly master its ins and outs. Having 64-25 aspect ratio is a no brainer. Yes want to see it. Having ability to shoot raw only and see desired aspect ratio. An equal no brainer. More separation of video and still. Another no brainer. Now on another subject: my main reason for having the GFX is to shoot architecture. I got the Cambo Actus but found it slower than an Arca Swiss film 69 camera. It also seemed to lack rigidity. So gave it up for canon TSE and Laowa shift lenses. Is it too niche, but why can’t we have a nice set of tse lenses for XT5??? I had tilt shift lens for Olympus OM-1 in 1978. I’d like to see the following tilt shift for XT5: 10mm 16mm 23mm 35mm 55mm I simply do not understand why we cannot have the capabilities we had in cameras built in the 1860s. You don’t know the power of Shifting the image and tilting the focus plane… with apologies to Darth Vader for using his line… Anyway, not perfect, but as you say: A great camera.
Shift lenses are indeed a niche thing. There are a couple coming for the GFX system and if they sell well, you'll probably see more. Fujifilm may show a little love to the X system in that regard now that they have pretty much every other lens available, but I think you'd be more likely to see shift lenses on the X system from the likes of Laowa or another third-party manufacturer. Time will tell!
Hi Dylan, nice video as always. I have a question, I am a vintage lens user and I always use focus peaking, in the older generation, when I half press the shutter the focus peaking will turn off so I have a clean image to final check the composition before I take the photo. I found this really helpful, but in the newer bodies, this is gone and I can't seems to find it in the setting... do you know is there a way to set the camera to get this back or its gone gone... and yes the video setting displaying on the photo mode really make me think for multiple times that I was in the wrong mode, it's a bit silly now... i hope they change it back
Now that the new 16-55 F2.8 is released, as a casual shooter, I’m contemplating if I should just go for the XT50+16-50 kit, or splurge on this XT5+16-55 F2.8 V2? I find it a waste if I get the XT5 with the kit lens and I enjoy shooting F2 primes and light setup, and I already have a few batteries as well. If only the XT50 is a bit more reasonable.
Seems like you've answered your own question! Personally, the X-T5 is a camera that is far better suited to the way I work, so I pick it up everytime I need to do something serious. The X-T50 sits in my waistpack when I'm cycling and every gram is just one more you have to carry up hill. If you like those f/2 primes, either body will be fine. But, if you're going for a slightly bigger zoom, the T5 will be a more comfortable carry on long days
I've had the X-T5 a pair for 6 months, I shoot events and concerts and tbh I've gone back to a pair of X-T3s. File size and buffer became an issue and to an extent the lack of battery grip also became a bug bare. It's a great camera, but just not the tool for me.
I'm actually in the same boat and will be sharing a little more in an upcoming video as well. Are you happier with the X-T3s? Personally, that's been my favourite overall camera in the X-T lineup.
X Pro3 user here and I was debating the switch. There is nothing that I really miss with my x pro3. Bigger battery, ibis, nostalgic Negative film simulation and new sensor would be cool, but I don't need these features. I will wait for the x pro4 and see :)
The T5 is a very different feeling from the X-Pro series. If you like working with the rangefinder-style body, definitely wait it out! Fujifilm has done a great job of making all the components smaller over the years, so you might just see IBIS, and the new battery in the next X-Pro.
Great review. I left Fuji for Nikon when I got frustrated by their direction. I really miss certain things though, especially weight/size advantage. I don’t personally think I need the 40mp so I had been considering the XH2S to get the improved focus and the lower res. Do you find the low light performance compromised by the significant bump in mp or does that clean up in post well enough? What is the highest ISO you would find good enough for the paid work you do? I would have been thrilled with the xh2s sensor in an xt5 or XPro body.
About 25% of my yearly shooting is corporate events in rooms that could easily be described as catacombs. I honestly haven't been bothered by the slight difference in noise. I'm sure more critical users who zoom in and look around might find fault with it, but my clients still only use web resolution images for the most part. Anyone who is using high resolution images on my end isn't having their session in poorly lit situations. In short, no, I haven't noticed a difference.
I always enjoy watching your reviews, thank you Dylan! You praised the X-T5's ability to couple the autofocus point with the face detection mode to focus on one specific face in the frame. As an X-T5 user myself I frequently find the camera still detecting irrelevant faces in the background instead of the clearly dominant subject in the frame even if I put the focus box right on that specific face. In my experience, the camera overwrites the focus mode completely when face detection is enabled. If anybody knows a workaround, let me know!
Thanks for watching! Sorry to hear you're still having those issues. Have you upgraded to the latest firmware? I found it was much better after that, hence my praise. Maybe it's still not working for everyone? Hopefully someone here can help!
Dylan, thanks for your impression and review. Have you considered using the Smallrig Lplate slash tripod plate? It's comfortable, enhances grip, and matches well color-wise while allowing easy access to the battery. Also, you can change the characteristic of the joystick, so it quickly centers. One nitpick I do have with the XT5 is that it scratched way too fast. I have the silver version, and it has plenty of scratches without heavy use.
Maybe... ha! It really seems odd that after so many years of getting it right and making solid improvements to the camera that they decided to break so many little things in the fifth generation. Communication issues could be it!
Good overview, Dylan I wonder though, as a professional working massively in several style of photography, what were your particular reasons of choosing X-T5 bodies over X-H2 ? Is that because of willing to retain a classical/vintage controls ? Was it weight/size? Or probably some sort of technical preference advantageous to your professional work ? Because the pricing gap isn’t really that large between these two.. Will appreciate response
Hi! Nothing quite so considered, to be honest. The functionality I require is very simple so nothing to do with the feature sets. I mostly work with the camera in T mode and change the shutter speed with the rear dial these days, so not the controls. It boils down to two things. Firstly, I absolutely cannot get along with the screens on the X-H2 bodies. Secondly, it took two seconds of holding the body to be repulsed by the grip. I hold these cameras in my hands for dozens of hours a week, so I need them to be comfortable to use. It's as simple as that.
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Thanks Dylan So do I get your point that you found the T5 body is more comfortable in your hand than the H2 ? Asking because most users I had the chance to hear their opinions in this regard claim that even though larger and heavier, the H2 offers more secure and convenient grip…
On both of my X-T5s pressing the joystick once re-centers the focus point. On my X-T30 II I have to press the “Back” button to re-center the focus point. All three cameras were purchased within the last two months. Not that that should matter.
As mentioned here by Peter, you can change the behaviour of the stick, but not back to the way ot was on the other X-T, X-Pro, or other bodies up until now. Frustrating to say the least.
Great Video. Question-When in continuous mode, is there a way to also have the exposure adjusting? Basically I'm taking football (soccer) pics of my son and as he is moving from bright areas on pitch to shaded areas, the exposure is locked from when I press shutter till I release it. Thanks
Hi! Yes, you can. According the manual, you'll need to go into Button and Dial Settings (very intuitive...) and turn the Shutter AE setting to OFF. That should fix your issue.
I hope one thing: that Fujifilm reads this review and acts upon it. With the possible software updates this can be an almost perfect camera. And let's hope that the next hardware iteration gets the autofocus on Canon/Sony level, together with larger buffer. Small raw files are key for a 40MB sensor. And why not explore the route of the Leica Q3, that makes use of a user friendly digital zoom to extend the possibilities of our primes. With 40 MB Fuji could explore this. And yes: Fujifilm and other camera manufacturers really should start to make work the possibilities of all forms of computational photography to stay ahead of smartphones on all fronts, in stead of lagging behind. Personally - being a Canon shooter - I started not so long ago to work with an XT-1 to get fully acquainted with the Fuji ecosystem, working with vintage lenses, a cheap TT artisan 25 f2 manual focus lens and a Fringer pro III to work with my Canon lenses. I really adore the XT- concept and will wait to get my hands on the XT-6. Subscribed to your channel. The way you articulate your video is very useful and inspiring.
Hi Dylan, thanks for this long term review. I'm still struggling with getting one, since I'm afraid of getting the same worse painting of the body like in my X-T4, which is far beyond of the quality of e. g. the X-H1. I already have some abrasion on the edges although I have paid extreme attention in putting and removing it to and from a cage. How would you rate the quality of the painting of the X-T5?
Hi! YES. This is a Fujifilm thing... I've never had a Fujifilm body that hasn't had paint wear within about 6 months of use. I don't even use a cage and my cameras all still have scuffs from simply being taken out of the bag. Personally, I don't mind the battle scars, but I can definitely see it annoying others! Wish I had better news for you.
Thanks Dylan, really helpful as an XT5 user myself to cross reference against my personal experience. In summary I agree with you on all points and I hope that the non-hardware related issues will be resolved soon by firmware. As you said, it’s a great camera but not perfect
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Well I think the biggest firmware fixable one is the sizeable Raw files and then possibly the video/photo menu separation. I for one wish it was heavier and felt more like a tank, the shell feels thin, and fragile but so far it’s been fine durability wise.
I am a non-prof photographer just do it as a passion but also sometimes have little jobs (family or maternity shoots lately). One thing which me bothers since the first Fuji camera from the X series is the fact that the on/off button is so easy going. I mean that it happens all the time that when I put my camera in my bag (on my way to a shoot or also while doing streetphotography walks), accidentally the button switches to on, so that when I arrive at my shoot location, the battery has drown. Is anyone else here (whatever version of the X series you own) is having similar problems? And is it improved on the XT5? It's only that I sometimes think: Maybe for my jobs I should get a more reliable model of another brand. Thanks for your comments. And also of course for the profound video.
As a hobbyist I'm still frustrated with my XT5 menu. Some of the AF settings are so intuitive. It's fantastic being able to prep every setting before turning the camera on with the dials, only to fumble with the AF trying to get it into the right mode. I guess I need to spend more time just going in and out of face detection, zones, etc. It all feels unnecessarily complicated. The Fuji colors are incredible, Viltrox is putting out the best glass and AF from a third party I've ever seen, but like you said Fuji needs to keep working on the UI and UX, and don't get me started on their new Fuji X app that requires location permissions just to open the app...
I have used an XT-3 for over 4 years and am ready to invest in a replacement, either an X-T5 or the X-H2. I have seen most of the on-line reviews of the X-T5, and yours is certainly the most informative. I am inclined to order the camera. But the X-H2 is very tempting, too. Among other things I like that I could switch set-ups in an instant, also that I could check settings in the dark (thanks to the mini-screen). Could you explain in a nutshell why you chose the X-T5 over the X-H2?
For me, it's all about the size and the body design. I don't like the grip on the X-H cameras and I love being able to work with the physical dials. For me, it's really that simple. If I liked the X-H body design, I'd buy a Nikon.
Never touched a GFX in my life, never heard of the 65:24 until now...... but yes, that's something I would like to have as an option on my X-T5 for sure!
They gave us a few random options for autofocus blur to keep us on our toes, but not for raw file res :)😂 I still shoot my X-T2 because I didn’t get quite the camera I wanted yet. For me, slightly larger body and deeper handgrip, same X-T5 back tilt screen, X-H2 higher resolution UVF, X-T5/X-H2 current battery, sensor and processor, same X-T5 dual card slots… plus all the things you mention! :) Definitely the compactness of the X-T5 puts me off. Perhaps X-T6 is a sweet spot… maybe also a Nikon Rf style PASM switch too! Then I’ll jump
Dylan, thanks for such a detailed and clear review that can be understood by an amateur/enthusiast. Question: I see you used the XC35 f2 with the X-T3. The images look great. The wide format image with the boat really is cool. Did you expect that lens to work well with the new sensor give all the hype about lenses that are/are not optimized for it? Thanks again and have a great weekend.
I want the metering-mode dial back from the X-T3 and before! That is for me much more important than the film/photo switch for "photography first". Movie mode can still be done via the drive mode dial, right? About the 1st tile in the Q menu, that makes sense on their cameras with PASM dial when you're in a custom mode on the dial, like "C1", "C2", etc. Then you cannot see if that is "M", "A", etc and you need a way to change it. On the X-T series cameras, no that doesn't make sense!
Best review I have seen on the XT5.
Upgrading from XT3 so it’s good to have all this information.
Awesome and detailed review with very useful critiques and suggestions. Well done!
Hi Dylan,
Thanks for yet another awesome review.
At some point I even fathomed the idea of investing in the GFX system for it, but being a simple hobbyist, it would be ludicrous…
I know you’re really not into post processing tutorials, but you are obviously so good at it that it would be awesome to see more content on this topic from you.
Best regards from France !
Really insightful review that adds great points to the broader discussion. Indeed, it disappoints me that some of these points are not made in other reviews. Many thanks!
And I hope Fuji were listening.
Great review. Well done. And fantastic images! Probably best I have seen from a reviewer!
Thank you! The reviews are always secondary for me. You need to make images to understand the gear.
The best review I've seen of the XT-5. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Do you own an X-T5? Enjoying using it so far?
On the joystick, if you press and hold you can customize the response back to the way it was originally done on prior cameras.
Danke!
Oooooohh... 65x24 would be delicious!
Spot-on for most of your critiques, too!
Glad you enjoyed it and some points resonate with you! Enjoy your new camera!
100% spot on! I remember the good old days when Fuji listened and gave the people the firmware updates they needed!
Let's hope those days aren't gone! After all, people only spend on the things they want!
3:58 100%. Today I picked up my XT3 and wow it feels noticeably better. The worst part is the on off switch on the XT5.
Yes to the. 65x24 aspect ratio. I love that in my GFX and you're quite right, there is no reason it could not be implemented in the X cameras.
Great video. Thank you very much. Thinking about buying this X-T5 I watch a lot of videos and yours is the one that has its advantages and small points of improvement most rigorously. I have one last question: the support that interferes with the opening of the battery access door, is it a Peak Design?
Anything larger than a square will get in the way of the door opening. If you've got one of those little square plates, you should be fine!
thank you, my X-T5 is still on its way to me, so i cant talk about it yet. but all you said sounds very logical. i hope Fuji is following your channel.
Im really appreciate your long term review, it different from other Reviewer on youtube, alot info i haven't get from others.
Glad it was helpful!
The resolution can only be altered in JPEG. I only work in raw, so that's the issue. If you're not using raw, no issues!
What a great review! Thank you for this. Great stuff in compact and non nonsense form🙌
Being a XH2 and XH2s user I can relate to 99% of your wishes and issues, so my sentiments exactly!
FUJIFILM… listen to this wonderfully honest photographer!
Great video! I’m so happy with my XT4 and kit. No desire to upgrade.
Excellent review. Still using XT 2 so well behind now.
My XT5 re-centres on the double push, now have I changed something in menu, I can't remember.
YES bring the 65x24 !! And thanks for the video, spot on with your comments. Love my XT5
Thanks for this video. I much prefer waiting for a review from a real working photographer rather than the usual “we used it for 2 hours” first looks than most camera channels do.
Out of curiosity, are there any other Fuji channels you recommend?
Pushing in the joystick resets the focus point to the center on my X-T5. Maybe a setting got changed?
Sorry, my focus-point is jumping back when I just press it in the middle🙂... maybe because of new firmware...?
These are just my thoughts. They may or may not be significant for you, but I do hope they're food for thought!
Thorough, extensive, practical. Excellent video!
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Dylan, many thanks. I bought the X-H2 last week and love it. Look forward to your next videos. Stay safe. Marc
Press the focus stick and it centers:) Double tap works as well. (Focus lever settings->press->center. As for formatting it avoids mistakes. My Q meunu shows custom setting in the first tile always regardless which focus mode I am in!
Thanks for the review, good honest information, and your work is very lovely
Thanks for watching and for the kind words! I hope there was something of use in there for you.
Well done & thought through. Really enjoyed this video.
Excellent review. Now that it’s 6 months since the video, have some of your suggestions been implemented via firmware?
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, no changes through firmware. :(
What a shame. The no small raw file is particularly odd.
Awesome review! Truly fresh complaints I hadn’t heard in all the others. 🙏🏻
Overall, it's a great camera. Just some infuriating changes that seem to have become the norm for Fujifilm.
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer Oh for sure. I can’t wait to get my X-T5 and your review was extremely fair and uplifting about the strong points.
I just love seeing a fellow stickler point out the same kinds of thing that will drive me nuts lol
Extensive and detailed review! Very enjoyable. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the input appreciate you
Yes to 65:24 please. Great video, Fuji really should listen to you!
Thank you, sounds like you are a very capable professional photographer. Question - what kind of monitor you use for editing?
Thanks for stopping by. I've been using Eizo monitors for several years now. Recently switched out to a 4K model as they were having s sale.
Dylan - My X-T5 re centers the focus point with just one tap of the joystick. Not sure why yours do not!
I would love to see these updates!
Great content sir. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Oh man! I loved hearing your frustrations 🤣 I totally sympathise and understand!
Haha! Glad it was at least entertaining!
Options and full customization are never bad :) this way you can satisfy more customers
Thank you for your input!
Thanks, Daniel! It's a great camera but there are still a few things that could be improved from my perspective. Is there anything about it that irks you?
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer The X-T5 features great, modern hardware, while the software is left behind, "in legacy mode". An overhaul is due :)
The issue might be that the person in charge of the software is in that position for a long long time, as japanese people usually stick to a single position for life, and he won't give up his philosophy of how should a camera menu and underlying software be.
Very practical and informative review. I have the XH2s and I am getting an XT5. Actually I waited before getting an XT5 just to hear some reviews. And your review answered a lot of my questions. Have you used it as a video camera? How does it compare to a stacked sensor?
Glad it was helpful! The only video I do is for this channel, so I really can't offer much in terms of useful information, unfortunately!
Thanks for that review. Yes to every FW change requested. The XT-5 should be more than it currently is.
Same for me. Great review as always btw.
@@thenosyhungarian yes, really nice review!
Double tapping the joystick DOES recenter the focuspoint
Thank you for such a rational review.
Yes (duh!) to 65:24. That is such a no-brainer for any of the Fuji 40 MP APS-C cameras. And because their native aspect ratio is wider than the GFX series, APS-C users would "lose" a smaller percentage of the original pixels compared to the GFX series. (I really need to do the actual math for this...)
As for the X-T5's grip "topography", I also found it to be a little on the small size.
Please tell us if the last firmware update has solve the problems you have mentioned
By the way, you can set up the joy stick to push for center. Forgive me if it is already said by someone else.
See the pinned comment.
I’d like to see the following tilt shift for XT5:
10mm
16mm
23mm
35mm
55mm
I simply do not understand why we cannot have the capabilities we had in cameras built in the 1860s.
You don’t know the power of Shifting the image and tilting the focus plane… with apologies to Darth Vader for using his line…
Anyway, not perfect, but as you say: A great camera.
Does the newbeye autofocus work when lots of people in video?
Excellent valid comments. There had to be serious communication issues between the camera designer and programmer. They speak difficult languages?
Maybe... ha! It really seems odd that after so many years of getting it right and making solid improvements to the camera that they decided to break so many little things in the fifth generation. Communication issues could be it!
Probably too late to the comments but I think they fixed the double tap joystick to recenter.
Focus point. Working on mine.
Good overview, Dylan
I wonder though, as a professional working massively in several style of photography, what were your particular reasons of choosing X-T5 bodies over X-H2 ?
@@DylanGoldbyPhotographer
Thanks Dylan
So do I get your point that you found the T5 body is more comfortable in your hand than the H2 ?
Hi Dylan,
thanks for this long term review.
Wish I had better news for you.
what do you think about the H2 bodies?
Thanks Dylan, really helpful as an XT5 user myself to cross reference against my personal experience. In summary I agree with you on all points and I hope that the non-hardware related issues will be resolved soon by firmware. As you said, it’s a great camera but not perfect
Thanks for watching. Is there anything specific you'd like to see changed?
I would love the 65:24 ratio on my XH2. Come on Fujifilm!!!!!
What a great review!
