Thanks for commenting, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, certainly it could happen to you. There are many opportunities around Vancouver Island to rent a kayak on the ocean. The rest is up to chance. Please note there are some new whale wise guidelines in place. You must remain 200 meters (approx. 600') from them at all times, minimum. However in a kayak if they choose to come to you, there is not much you can do.

+Slav BK To be honest, they may even help someone who might be swimming out that far, back to shore. There have been times where Orcas have helped drowning people from sea to shore. I saw a video of an Orca nudging a dog back on the shore.
Sgt. Keyboard Warrior There has never been a documented attack in the wild. They are dolphins and unimaginably intelligent. I wouldnt doubt that they would help someone in distress if they understood (underswam?) the situation. Plenty of dolphins have been documented helping humans in various ways in the wild.

There are many whale watching tour groups on Vancouver Island but check the best time of year for optimum chance of sightings for orca and humpback whales. If you are a nature lover you will not be disappointed to visit our majestic wilderness. By the way, you are safer, by far, to be kayaking with orca close by than driving in your car.
They're so breathtaking, you are truly fortunate for that experience! I can only hope something even remotely close happens to me! Just gorgeous animals...
Wow!! I live on the island and I know how lucky you were to see them up so close like that. Right under the boat! Holy crap, even though I know they won't harm you it's still unerving to have something that big headed for you and swimming under your kayak!! Perhaps one day I'll be lucky too...
The DFO seriously thought you guys pursued the pod? In those kayaks? That seems a bit ridiculous. I get that they don't want them harrassed but how could anyone possibly pursue them in a craft like that.
They didn't pursue the pod. They were heading out to an island when they heard the Orcas were heading towards them, so they decided to stick around and see if they could spot any
Sooke has a lot of sports fishing boats and local pods often circle boats in hopes of catching a salmon on the line or else going after seals and sea lions lured away from shore to do the same thing. Whales could have mistaken their paddle boat for a sea lion until they got closer. Transient whales often use ships as a screen... allowing them to approach sea lion and seal rocks without their fins being seen.
Guidelines are set--guidelines to help the Orcas so they don't become too acclimated to humans. Though the experience was wonderful for you, your video will attract others to do the same, and has the possibility of driving humans into the waters. Humans who have little knowledge of the territorial and feeding habits of wildlife need to educate themselves/ourselves. B.C. is a beautiful, wild place. Respect its waters and know that we share it with many animals--not only those of the human variety. kn
I so agree with you. When I saw this just now I couldn't believe they were even proud of themselves to get so close to those animals. Though it is only a video, it looks like he is even paddling towards them as soon as he spots one of them nearby.
He wasn't to close to the orcas and a good amount of the time it looked like the orcas were in his space. Not only that, but he never interacted with the orcas. What's the problem?
It's obvious that the orca came towards them, they are no match for their speed. They just sit and paddle the boat to turn it to watch. The bull is indeed checking him out and he's just in awe. I'd rather have 50 of these waterbikes (that's what we call them in the Netherlands) in the water than 10 whale watching boats! Wild and Free, as they all should be!
Nature is so beautiful! Your experience was amazing! And you guys have some serious guts not panicking in that situation. Thanks for sharing this experience, made my day watching this!
WOW! Great shot, that must have been quite the experience. I've been on a whale watching tour in that area and even recently posted some content about it and it was amazing. A pod swam right underneath us as well.
Hooooooo! Watching a whale swim beneath me, in a sliver of a boat would be frightening. I practically started hyperventilating for you. Glad none of them were curious enough to bump the boat! I admit, once seeing them under me I'd paddle as fast as my little feet could get me back to shore. Very cool though! Awesome you got that on tape! I'd love to go some day... maybe just in a bigger boat. :)
This is where these wild animals should be enjoyed, in the wild! Please be mindful during any adventure to keep it safe, respect your surroundings and leave as little a footprint as possible so it will be there to enjoy always :)

There is not any evidence that orca's attacked humans in the wild.
@@Herman6507 There's no evidence they haven't, either.
I think some commenters are confusing orca with mermaids.
@@sunnyvalejedi I think you're fear mongering, until there is a case.
No one will care about your fear mongering
WOW! Guys that was amazing, scary, exciting, and gusty all wrapped into one! Prob my favorite Orca video I've seen yet. Thank God they didn't breach while under you. Amazing thanks!
I would of shit myself at 6:09
vShoTzZ25 omg same
i think my face was just as crazily excited as yours there towards the end of the vid...so cool!
Dam there so smart I would have shit myself I ain't goin lol
i'm from Victoria BC and you see these whales all the time and i have never been so amazed and happy to see them come so close to humans they dont feel threatned and it should be that way with every animal it shouldnt have to be afraid of us killing it I just love sooke and im glad you had an amazing experience you could share with us.
AMAZING & STUNNING !!
WoW! I would be too scared to do this myself! I'm buzzing from just watching this so can only just begin to imagine what an adrenaline rush it must have been! Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely amazing video. Such a dream experience. Perfect. Such beautiful and majestic animals. Love Orca's so much.
how did you not know there was a staple in your face before you filmed this.
That was amazing!!!! I felt like I was right there having that experience with you. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing!!!! 😍
They're so breathtaking, you are truly fortunate for that experience! I can only hope something even remotely close happens to me! Just gorgeous animals...
cool! I would have shat myself!
I get that they don't want them harrassed but how could anyone possibly pursue them in a craft like that.
hi uhuhjj jhuhjmijkii
Where did you see that?
They didn't pursue the pod. They were heading out to an island when they heard the Orcas were heading towards them, so they decided to stick around and see if they could spot any
Sooke has a lot of sports fishing boats and local pods often circle boats in hopes of catching a salmon on the line or else going after seals and sea lions lured away from shore to do the same thing. Whales could have mistaken their paddle boat for a sea lion until they got closer.
Transient whales often use ships as a screen... allowing them to approach sea lion and seal rocks without their fins being seen.
Go watch Black fish on netflix!
Orcas are simply beautiful. I love seeing them enjoy the freedom. This is wonderful.
This looks like an amazing experience that I hope one day I gather the courage to try. Great video guys not something you will ever forget
WOW! Great shot, that must have been quite the experience. I've been on a whale watching tour in that area and even recently posted some content about it and it was amazing. A pod swam right underneath us as well.
Glad you got to experience the Orca and had a wonderful time. Thanks for commenting.
This is amazing! I would kill to experience that!
This is where these wild animals should be enjoyed, in the wild!
Please be mindful during any adventure to keep it safe, respect your surroundings and leave as little a footprint as possible so it will be there to enjoy always :)
hahahaha when the whale watching boat zoomed by I LOLed. lived in Vancouver my whole life, been to Tofino, boating trips out on vancouver island several times, and never seen wild orcas. Something on the top of my list
Hahaha, "Holy grapes". I'm gonna say that from now on. Anyway, I would love to go do that sometime. Orcas are my favorite :))
thanks to your video, now kayaking is on my bucket list!
This was the most amazing video of wild orcas that I've seen so far! I would have been shaking just as bad or worse! I worked at Sea World for a while and seeing trained orcas compared to wild ones are a HUGE difference!...Especially when there's not a large peice of 11 inch glass between you!
My heart skipped a beat when you said it was underneath you. I'm right there with you, man. lol
When the fin was right in front of you guys my jaw dropped. You were that close to something so big! I wanna try this, it looks like a real rush!
Awesome Video! I plan on kayaking around the San Juan Islands next spring! Hope to have a memorable trip like yours!
Incredible. You were the subject of a people-watching expedition by the Orca pod.
Cripes is right! I'd be amazed and crapping my pants at once! Awesome!!
hey man, you know how you go film the awesome events that happen in your life, then share it, that must feel damn good huh? that theyre on a tape, gonna be kept as a memory forever
I wish, I only wish I could have done this. I kayaked with dolphins in SC but Orcas, you are very lucky and have huge balls..your language on the clip makes the clip, so good to see someone who is able to express themselves without a four letter word.
How cool!! Very exciting to say the least!! I got the chills. Thanks for an awesome video!!
Absolutely amazing. My husband and daughter kayak these waters all the time and have had many amazing experiences but never anything like this. This was exceptional...a little terrifying but exceptional all the same. Great video, thanks so much for sharing, WOW!!
Mate it looks like you were smack bang in the middle of a massive pod. There were calves, juveniles and some REALLY big males. What a privilege to have been there - I'm very jealous!
Luckiest s.o.bs... I'm not trying to be disrespectful. Just a exciting expression. I'd give anything to be in their place. Really lucky. I love Orcas!!!
